Review: Godzilla X Kong: Giant Kong Figure

The Godzilla X Kong: Giant Kong Figure is a great action figure for boys and girls. This 11″ tall toy is the perfect option for fans of the giant ape or lovers of beasty action toys. Moreover, if you know about the latest film, you’ll adore the eye for detail. This large toy has intricate marks that reflect the protagonist’s staring role. What’s more, he has an aggressive look that is filled with energy and drama.

This dramatic look is bound to make kids giddy with excitement. His large fangs and menacing stance are something to behold. Additionally, if you have any of the other Godzilla X Kong figures you’ll be able to replicate key scenes from the movie. These figures are sold separately and there are 4 to collect.

Is the Godzilla X Kong: Giant Kong Figure a collectable or a toy?

If you are a collector, you’ll hate the idea of playing with this incredible item. Thankfully, my kids couldn’t care less and they ripped it out of the box as soon as they saw it. As soon as the Godzilla X Kong: Giant Kong Figure was out of the box, you could move the arms, legs, and head. This was fantastic as you can make Kong stand in some terrifying and amusing stances. Furthermore, if you have other random toys, you can make them battle and scrap to your heart’s content.

Though the movements were limited, they were suitable for this hulking beast. What’s more, if you love to display your toys, you can make the Kong figure stand out from your other collectables. Subsequently, this is a striking option whether you wish to own a display item or an incredible toy.

Build quality.

Modern toys have a tendency to be poorly made. Cheap paint, weak materials, and awful details taint many products. Luckily, the Godzilla X Kong: Giant Kong Figure suffers from none of these shortcomings. Instead, it is a substantial toy with strong moving parts and an incredibly detailed design. The scars and costume match the protagonist in the film. Furthermore, it has a terrifying nature that highlights Kong’s beastly side.

If collecting figures is your thing, you won’t be disappointed. This large and imposing figure will look great on your shelf. The balanced stance was delightful and the hardened material will last the test of time. Additionally, the rich colour palette and impressive power glove accessory will catch your eye.

Is the Godzilla X Kong: Giant Kong Figure worth it?

This toy/collectable isn’t entirely essential. However, it is incredibly well-built and I love the menacing stance. On top of this, there are 3 other characters to buy and this makes imaginative play a genuinely exciting prospect. Collectors will adore the 4 unique models because of their quality and interesting style. Children will love this toy because it is large, robust, and wonderfully mean. Consequently, it ticks many boxes and I recommend buying it here!

The Godzilla X Kong: Giant Kong Figure has been awarded the Movies Games and Tech Gold Award.

Review: 63 Days

63 Days takes you on a grim tour of war-torn Poland. History doesn’t lie, and this harrowing title puts Poland’s resistance fighters in the spotlight. It was a fantastic idea that should have been fascinating and enthralling. However, issues with core mechanics and overly complicated controls prevent it from shining. Yet, underneath the shortcomings, there is plenty of potential trying to break through.

This stealth tactical game was developed and published by Destructive Creations. Moreover, it is a single-player or cooperative experience. I didn’t try the latter mode, and I spent my entire time fighting the nazis as a solo resistance leader. Accordingly, my review will focus on this gameplay. I will start by saying that I love the unique WWII viewpoint. Rarely do people focus on Poland’s war efforts, and I appreciated the fresh take. Yet, the issues will prevent people from losing themselves in the story.

63 Days: A Brutal Tale.

2 brothers have had enough! Their country is being attacked and Hitler and his troops outnumber them. But this matters not. They know that brain power will beat brawn every time. Consequently, they will plan every encounter to the finest of margins. This meticulous approach will give them a slender advantage and turn the tide in their favour.

In theory, this is a great plan, but it rarely works. The combination of stealth and run-and-gun combat doesn’t quite work. Additionally, wonky AI and unfortunate controls force you into a test of memory recall and uncomfortable dexterity. This was extremely frustrating as your bullets are as powerful as a potato shooter and distracting the enemy only exposes your position. You may say there is a skill gap, and maybe you are right. However, I’ve played plenty of tactical games, and 63 Days just didn’t feel right.

A decent campaign.

The gameplay flows across 6 campaigns. Each of these stages becomes increasingly convoluted and the maps are huge. Each one beautifully represents Poland’s broken cities. With bombed buildings, dead bodies, and other unfortunate signs of war, it is tough to take in. However, it is this cruel backdrop that keeps you going. Alongside this, the interesting cinematic and well-narrated plot was captivating. It’s just a shame that the core mechanics drive you to distraction.

During each mission, there are 5 characters to utilise. You are normally asked to take 2-3 heroes into each mission and each has strengths and weaknesses. One is a master of stealth combat, and another champions the use of daggers. Alternatively, maybe healing is your go-to skill. Either way, you must understand each skill if you are to succeed.

The aim of the game is to remain in the shadows. This isn’t always possible as the janky mechanics occasionally throw a spanner in the works. If the shit hits the fan and you are spotted, you are free to unleash hell with your arsenal of weapons. Unfortunately, the enemy is far stronger and their weapons are more powerful, so an all-out gunfight isn’t advised. Disappointingly, the only tactic that worked was dragging my enemies into a funnel of doom. Though this worked 9 times out of 10, it felt a bit lame and it didn’t match the tactical theme.

63 Days looks fantastic.

Though the core elements were janky, 63 Days looks fantastic. The bird’s eye perspective lets you plan and in theory gives you an unfair advantage. Alongside this, the UI is clean and easy to understand. The world is grim and uncomfortable on the eye. The broken buildings, dead bodies, and lack of colour are a sombre reminder of Poland’s relationship with WWII.

The audio creates a chilling atmosphere as well. The melancholy music and cruel story highlight the plight of the resistance. Explosions, gunfire, and shouting fill the air of every mission. There is a sense of vulnerability and danger at each stage and this was brilliant to experience.

Challenging controls.

63 Days is suited to a mouse and keyboard. Subsequently, whenever you play this with a gamepad, things get complicated. Selecting multiple units is easy, but executing their special skills requires a lot of effort. This was frustrating especially when you are trying to complete an array of tactical elements at once. However, after a few hours, you get used to the complicated approach and things do get easier.

Replay value and longevity focus on the 3 difficulty settings. The easy mode doesn’t test you too much and this was a good place to start. Unfortunately, the hard mode is brutal and this will punish you. Consequently, if you like to push yourself, then there is scope to test your tactical mindset.

63 Days is good but it could be better.

63 Days was good but infuriating at the same time. I loved the level design and the grim aesthetic. Moreover, the story was fantastic and the narration worked well. However, the core elements weren’t great and this holds it back. If you have patience and love tactical games, then you’ll get plenty out of this. Accordingly, despite its shortcomings, I recommend buying it here! Can you stand up to the Nazis? Master your skills, hide in the shadows, and plan every move.

Review: Tahoe glasses

GUNNAR delivers exceptional eyewear to improve your health, productivity, and comfort. However, occasionally, they surprise me with their sublime products. The Tahoe glasses sit in the Mythic pro-level category. Accordingly, they offer the best materials and every GUNNAR health benefit. I was blown away by the craftsmanship and the clean look.

These incredible glasses have a choice of two lenses. First, you may select the 65% blue light protection amber tint. These are perfect if you want softer contrasts and less glare. However, if you are an artist or designer, you’ll want to pick a clear lens. The clear material blocks 20% blue light without altering the surrounding colours. This makes this the ideal choice for high-end graphic designers. Though the protection levels are reduced, you’ll feel the health benefits of the latter choice.

What’s in the box of the Tahoe glasses?

  • The outer packaging is simple and understated. However, the main product is alluring and attractive.
  • The Tahoe glasses are phenomenal. The frame combines high-quality Italian acetate and lightweight aluminium alloy. The result is a stunning rectangular frame that is eye-catching.
  • Protect the glasses with the hard or soft case.
  • Keep the lenses clean with the microfibre cloth.

Technical aspects.

GUNNAR offers market-leading protection and jaw-dropping beauty. Yet, the Tahoe glasses have moved things up a gear. The mineral glass lens is next-level! This professional-grade material offers amazing clarity whilst delivering GUNNAR’s vast health benefits. This is the same material that is used in telescopes and high-end cameras, so you know it is a premium product. On top of this, the scratch resistance is unrivalled and the glasses are shatter-resistant as well.

If this isn’t enough, you enjoy 100% UV protection when you are away from your desk. Accordingly, though you cannot select a sunglasses variant, your eyes are protected from harsh UV light. On top of this, the 65% or 20% blue light protection is a game-changer. Staring at a screen all day is not good for your health. Your eyes dry out and you suffer from headaches and eye strain. Moreover, itchy eyes are never fun. Thankfully, the Tahoe glasses reduce these symptoms. The result? Higher productivity and longer gaming sessions. Consequently, it is a win-win as you feel healthy and look great at the same time.

Build quality.

The Tahoe glasses feel amazing on your face and are great to hold as well. The high-quality frame looks amazing and I liked the classic rectangular design. The slate finish was alluring and I loved the attention to detail. However, if you want something more vibrant, you may have to look at one of GUNNAR’s Marvel collaborations.

If you are a little heavy-handed, the flexible spring-loaded hinges are great. They adjust the frame to the width of your face and reduce pressure on your temples. Subsequently, they are ridiculously comfortable to wear whilst being hard-wearing.

The scratch and shatter-resistant lenses are incredible. The mineral glass is simply divine and they make these glasses stand out from their peers. Alongside this, the GUNNAR patented lens technology is breathtaking. You enjoy smudge-resistant lenses that are easy to clean. Additionally, there is anti-glare technology to reduce distractions if you stream or video call.

Are the Tahoe glasses worth it?

Unlike other GUNNAR products, the Tahoe glasses cannot be purchased as a prescription product. Though this will disappoint, it cannot be helped. The specialist lens material prevents this from being an option currently, but things may change in the future. This issue to one side, these glasses are awe-inspiringly good! The frame looks amazing and I love the eye for detail. What’s more, they are comfortable to wear and the lenses offer next-level fidelity and colour rendition. Accordingly, if you require professional quality glasses that are stylish and comfortable to wear, I recommend buying these here!

Review: Red Dead Redemption

I don’t think I’d survive long in the Wild West, to be honest with you. At least, not in Red Dead Redemption‘s version of it. If you’ve ever seen me try and extract my phone from my pocket, you’ll know it takes a couple of minutes and the occasional swear word. So if I ever got into a duel, I’d have to ask the opponent to assemble their gun from scratch before firing, just to make it fair. That’s not to mention my general aversion to being eaten by mountain lions. Thank goodness we’re controlling John Marston.

Speaking of which, rejoice! Red Dead Redemption has finally come to PC after fourteen long years. Just long enough for everyone to give up hope. Maybe the sequel made Rockstar realise that people don’t care what they play the game on, they just want to play the bloody game. That aside, it was quite the treat to relive the past. Red Dead Redemption remains a wonderfully written game, that understands how to build up its characters, with a great atmosphere. Though the gameplay is showing its age somewhat.

Red Dead Redemption

The Good, The Bad, And The Marston

Before we delve into Red Dead Redemption itself, lets look at the port in general. Rockstar were on slightly shaky ground after the sequel’s rough start on PC, but they handed it over to Double Eleven for this one. I’m pleased to report that Red Dead Redemption runs perfectly on PC. I didn’t notice any framerate drops*, nor any glitches or crashes to speak of. This is a straight port, though, so don’t expect updated graphics or new content. It bundles in Undead Nightmare, but that’s about it. Does make the £40 price point rather eye-watering, but if you can stomach it then it’s a wonderfully smooth transition to PC.

As for the game itself, chances are you already know a fair bit about it. It was (rightfully) acclaimed on first release. Still, let’s go through this like you’ve never heard of it. Red Dead Redemption follows the story of John Marston, a former outlaw that’s desperately trying to go straight. Unfortunately, he’s plucked off his farm by a couple of government suits and told that he has to hunt down his former gang members to get his family back. That’d be the ‘Redemption’ part of the title. A lot of people die, too, so that checks off that part. I guess blood fills in for the ‘Red’?

Either way, the driving force behind John Marston is the desire to turn over a new leaf. It’s an interesting – if not unique – character motivation and the writing on display is excellent. John Marston is sympathetic, even while he himself insists that he’s not. He’s a man that doesn’t shy from his past, but keeps his cards close to his chest – only showing them to people that understand. Listening to him wax philosophy about how much justice there really is in the law is fascinating. Red Dead Redemption also understands an old theatre rule: dialogue is more engaging when characters are doing something. Cutscenes are not static, people are always moving. It’s quite gripping.

Red Dead Redemption

The Howling Prarie

The other thing that gripped me about Red Dead Redemption was the world itself. Not in terms of graphics, mind you. Fourteen years have not been kind in the regard, though it’s not so ugly as to be off-putting. It’s more in terms of how the world feels. It’s a huge open space – you can ride through it and barely see another living thing – but it also feels quite alive. There’s just enough wildlife and just enough people shooting at each other to make it feel atmospheric. Traversing it at night is a nice feeling. This is a time before open world games felt the need to cram gameplay into every square inch.

Though that’s perhaps a bad example, as Red Dead Redemption‘s gameplay is a bit limited. Being that we’re in the Wild West, it’s mainly built around shooting. The gunplay itself is fine enough. The weapons all sound great and there are a ton to pick up. I found myself either sniping with a rifle, or switching to my pistol if I wanted to get a little personal. That said, the controller auto-aim is far too much – allowing you to snipe distant enemies without any difficulty. There’s also the Dead Eye system, which slows down time and allows you to mark targets for John to kill. This destroys whatever challenge the gunplay had left.

I also have a bone to pick with the story missions. There are a ton of them, split between a range of different characters. Problem is, once you remove these characters from the equation, they all follow similar templates. We’re either riding somewhere and shooting people, assaulting somewhere to shoot people or, worst of all, racing. If it weren’t for the interesting people tagging along, it’d be monotonous. Though to hop back to praising the writing, I do like that John canonically plays – and is played by – both sides of the conflicts he wades into. Man only cares about his family, which I respect.

Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption – Nice Writing, Dull Gameplay

Admittedly, there are a lot of other minigames. There’s poker, liar’s dice – you can even play knife your finger. I never really found much cause to do that though, as money isn’t hard to come by. Still, I did enjoy the bounty hunting – if only because it takes the leash off a bit. There are also a ton of ‘stranger’ quests, which are little side-missions – though they too suffer from a little repetition. Lastly, I’d like to point a finger at the Euphoria engine, which I always have issues with. John doesn’t feel quite as awkward to control as I remember, but tapping A to sprint is still a dumb idea fourteen years later.

Still, I never found myself wanting to put it down. I think it’s proof that if you have a likeable, interesting protagonist to play as then you’re going to naturally want to see how things conclude. Red Dead Redemption‘s ending is heart-breaking, and has long been held up as example of how gameplay and narrative can work together. It’s worth it for that alone. There might be some clunkiness in the engine and gameplay, but the beautiful writing and characterisation mean it more than holds up after a decade and a half.

Custom Keychains Canada offers highly personalized customization services. Whether it’s replicating John Marston’s iconic cowboy hat, his revolver, or the distinctive gang emblems from the game, everything can be accurately reproduced on the keychain. Custom keychains have undoubtedly become a popular choice for fans to express their love. The quick customization feature allows fans to design their desired keychain style in a short time.

Custom keychains provide a tangible way to keep the spirit of the Wild West alive in reality. Order your adorable keychains quickly at GSJJ.ca.

*For comparison, I’m on Windows 10 with an RTX 2070 Super and an Intel i7-13700K.

Review: Too Far

Too Far by Sidemen does exactly what it says on the tin. This is a naughty card game that breaks the ice for any get-together. Moreover, it tests your ability to lie and challenges you to read the room and find the liars. Though this sounds very confrontational, it is extremely funny! Needless to say, this isn’t a game for a younger audience. Accordingly, it is ideal for drinking with friends or going away on holiday.

This compact card game is unbelievably easy to understand. Furthermore, it can be played with just 2 people or up to 8. The games last between 20 minutes and an hour and there is plenty of shouting, arguing, and lies. Consequently, you’ll probably have a headache as each round plays out. If you love the Internet sensation the Sidemen, you’ll adore every second of this zany and often cutting experience.

What’s in the box of Too Far?

  • The compact packaging is ideal for your hand luggage. Moreover, it is robust and won’t get damaged easily.
  • Too Far comprises 92 confessions and 8 judgment cards. You’ll be kept busy as you work through every scenario.
  • A scorecard helps you present a winner.
  • Learn the basics with the quick start guide.

How do you play Too Far?

Unlike other card games, Too Far is extremely easy to play. First, you must place equal judgment cards for players in the middle of the table. Next, 1 person must read out a confession. Word of warning, some of them are quite cutting, so be prepared to be shocked. After the confession is told, you must pick up a judgment card. 1 person will be told to lie about their opinion and everyone else must tell the truth.

The aim of the game is to understand who is lying, and who is whiter than white. If you guess right, you get a point, if the liar doesn’t get detected, they get extra points. The winner is the person with the most points at the end of the game. As you can see, it is simple to understand. However, the complexities and the layers of tactics were wonderful. Throw shade on your opponents as you try to keep your lies to yourself. Alternatively, you must learn about your mate’s telltale signs and call them out for lying.

Addictive gameplay.

Too Far shouldn’t have been as fun as it was. The ridiculous arguments about the crazy subject matter were hilarious. My friends were shouting at one another as things well and truly got out of hand. Yet, it is all lighthearted, even when the confessions are uncomfortable. After a few games, we had to set some ground rules. Though I loved the raucous nature of each playthrough, my neighbours weren’t happy. Subsequently, you may wish to keep on top of things by keeping your mates a little quiet.

Though we’ve played through 40% of the subject matter, we can’t wait to keep playing. The confessions always lead to interesting conversations and it was fun watching people try to dig themselves out of a hole. My only worry with this game is its longevity. Though I am addicted to it, I can’t see how the same confessions will have a meaningful impact. Accordingly, I expect some additional game packs to be released to keep things fresh.

Build quality.

My confession and judgment cards have taken a battering. My drunken friends aren’t renowned for their feather-light touch, and Too Far is bearing the brunt of their fist storm. However, though there are some creases, and the scorecard is stained with beer, the box and the cards live to fight another day. Consequently, it is a well-built game that can take a beating from middle-aged men who should know better.

On top of this, I like the clear text and the vibrant colours. The game has been created to a high standard and you will not be disappointed with the finish. Moreover, the compact box is light and easy to carry around. Therefore, it is ideal if you love to camp or you want to take it down to the pub.

Is Too Far worth it?

If you’ve never heard of the Sidemen, you must have been living under a rock. Yet, if this is the case, you may not understand the hype around this game. However, if you are a fan, you’ll adore the silly action, the cutting confessions, and the short gameplay. Additionally, it is a great icebreaker for parties or on a night out. As such, I love it and I recommend buying Too Far here!

Too Far has been awarded the Movies Games and Tech Gold Award.

Review: Hidden in My Paradise

Hidden in My Paradise title

As the year comes to a close . . .

T’is the season of holiday hassle, big exams, and working life crunch time. Post-October may be the most stressful time of year for most of us. Plus, the days grow dimmer and colder. Why not kick back, cuddle up on the sofa with lots of blankets and a warm beverage, and play a cozy video game?

Indie developer Ogre Pixel released Hidden in My Paradise in early October: a cute, comfy, puzzle-based hidden objects game designed to give players a short and sweet romp of mental stimulation.

Play Hidden in My Paradise on Steam, the PC, the Nintendo Switch, or mobile app stores.

Fae, fauna, and flora, oh my!

Tour around various landscapes with blue-haired amateur photographer Laly and her little fairy friend, Coronya. Explore magnificently detailed scenes and find hidden flowers, camp items, and critters galore, snap an assortment of adorable pictures, and immerse yourself in a cozy, little world.

Find hidden objects and take photos in Hidden in My Paradise

There are 25 levels (or “paradises”) in total. Players will journey through forests, beaches, cityscapes, farms, and even recently added Halloween stages. Players must find a set amount of hidden objects, find secret fairies by dragging around items (usually behind bushes and flowers), and recreate provided photogenic scenes. While the game is not difficult, if players have trouble finding an object, click on Coronya the fairy as she will provide helpful hints and tips.

A little slice of paradise

Mechanically, the game is quite simple. All players need to do is point and click objects to find them. You can also drag things around and rotate them, which is particularly useful for finding fairies and recreating photos. The game itself is short, but each level may take some time–perhaps 15 to 30 minutes–at your leisure. It is not too hard at all to 100% all of the tasks, but it might take a keen eye.

Cool boost filter in a paradise in Hidden in My Paradise

Each and every paradise can be overlayed with a filter, like sepia, cool color boost, inverted, or you can even make the scene all green. Levels will be automatically set in the morning, evening, or at night, but players are able to freely adjust this setting for better visibility, or just for aesthetic purposes.

Another neat feature of Hidden in My Paradise is the Mario Maker-esque sandbox tools. Create your very own levels or play other players’ creations online! To unlock more items for designing these levels, accrue coins by playing the main game and by finding hidden treasure chests. Players can also play the gacha machine with in-game tickets to receive more unique items. The sandbox feature is loads of fun and easy to use. I personally enjoy spamming the animal who surely looks like a nod to Eevee . . .

Through the looking glass

The game has a cute, childlike chibi style with pops of color, like a more charming and soft Toca Boca game. Even if scenes are hard to see, players can easily change the filter settings as aforementioned. The paradises are not overwhelming or chaotic at all; all the visuals blend together to make a complete, crisp, picturesque landscape.

Buy items and play gacha in Hidden in My Paradise

The only gripe is the sound design, or lack thereof. The squishy sound effect when clicking objects is nice, but pretty much the same background track plays on a constant loop. This gets annoying after a while, so it may be best to play on mute and make your own cozy soundtrack.

Final thoughts

Hidden in My Paradise is full of charm and can easily be played in short bursts, or as a long-term investment to wind down after a tough day at work or school. The game itself is relatively short, but there is lots to it: the sandbox mode, bonus Halloween levels, and the enjoyable struggle of a portrait setup.

Green filter on a Hidden in My Paradise level

The innovative assortment of tasks makes each level even more interesting, making this hidden objects title stand out from the rest. Hidden in My Paradise is definitely worth a try, and might be a great option to chill out and escape from the world even for just a sliver of a second . . .

Review: Function 2 keyboard

The Function 2 keyboard from NZXT aims to combine convenience with blazing-fast inputs. Furthermore, it has a glorious RGB finish that complements its striking white or black finish. This full-size keyboard is ISO UK and requires no advanced computing know-how. Accordingly, it is a brilliant plug-and-play device that is perfect for newbie gamers or elite eSports enthusiasts. Either way, you will not be disappointed with this incredible gaming peripheral.

I’ve tested plenty of gaming keyboards and I’ve enjoyed them all. Akko, ROCCAT, SteelSeries, Epomaker, and more have blown me away for one reason or another. This stunning device sits up there with the best peripherals around. Not only does it look great, but it is easy to use and it has lightning-fast inputs for a game-changing experience. Consequently, if you want an all-rounder that won’t overwhelm you, this product should be on your horizon.

What’s in the box of the Function 2 keyboard?

  • The packaging is large and colourful. It has plenty of key selling points to capture your attention. Moreover, it can be easily recycled.
  • The Function 2 keyboard is a great-looking device. Additionally, it has a media knob, customisable RGB, and a detachable wired connection.
  • A wrist support is provided for comfort.
  • Power the keyboard with the USB-C cable.
  • Remove the keycaps and switches with the provided tools.
  • Learn the basics with the user manual.

Technical aspects.

Though I love to game, I use my PC to edit videos and write my never-ending list of articles and reviews. Accordingly, my requirements may differ from other people. However, I prioritise rapid inputs, long-lasting keycaps, and hot-swappable switches as a priority. The Function 2 keyboard offers each of these elements and much more. The NZXT Swift Optical Switches are remarkably responsive while delivering a deft touch. The 0.2 ms response time complements the 8,000 Hz polling rate for instantaneous results. What’s more, 2-point actuation creates an unusual but impressive custom feel that improves your gaming experience.

Though I like the pre-installed switches, you can swap these out with the keycap puller and switch removal tool. Consequently, you can create the keyboard of your dreams without the need to solder and with limited expertise. This was great for newbie gamers who wish to experiment. The switches come with an impressive 100-million key press guarantee, so NZXT is providing a reliable and hard-wearing device.

I love wireless peripherals because I hate cable management. I’m not alone in this statement, but I’m always open to wired alternatives. The benefits usually outweigh the downsides and I like the low-latency connection and the lack of battery concern. Furthermore, some minor planning removes the cable management issues.

Usability.

I love RGB, but I’m happy to go without it if necessary. Fortunately, the Function 2 keyboard is loaded with RGB madness. If you so wish, you may allow the preloaded software to rule the roost. Yet, if you are feeling brave or creative, you can use the free-to-download software and customise your RGB or profile. This was great as it gives you as much or as little freedom as you wish.

If you’ve read my reviews, you know I’m pretty lazy. Subsequently, I normally punt for an easy life. Fortunately, the NZXT CAM software is straightforward to use and it requires little technical knowledge. What’s more, adjusting each profile and other key elements was a cinch. If you were to make an error, you can simply undo your work and start again. Therefore, the Function 2 keyboard is the ideal device for those who want an easy life or those who wish to be creative.

Finally, if you love to control your settings, media, or RGB with the touch of a button, you can with the media knob and the tactile side buttons. These handy tools are conveniently located and simple to operate. What’s more, it stops you from jumping into your settings when you are in the middle of a game.

Build quality.

If you want a well-designed and robust keyboard, you need to look no further. Every aspect of this device is built with comfort and longevity in mind. The keycaps are double-shot PBT for long-lasting fonts and a richer colour. Moreover, they resist unsightly grease stains and scratching. On top of this, the pre-lubed switches and plate-mounted stabilisers are remarkably smooth and are enjoyable to use when typing. I experienced no dead zones and every input was smooth and responsive.

On top of this, the case utilises a dual layer of foam for an enhanced acoustic experience. I love the clacky sound of mechanical devices, but I hate unwanted background noise. Fortunately, you enjoy every old-school click without any other noise. Finally, aerospace-grade aluminium has been used to improve rigidity. This creates a spectacular long-lasting case that will take some abuse.

Is the Function 2 keyboard worth it?

There are plenty of great gaming keyboards to choose from. However, you normally have to compromise, and that isn’t fun. Thankfully, the Function 2 keyboard packs an almighty punch without letting you down. If you want a straightforward experience, it ticks that box. Alternatively, maybe you like to experiment and try new switches or profiles? Well, it ticks those boxes as well. On top of this, it is lightning-fast and perfect for typing and gaming. Accordingly, it is sublime and I recommend buying it here!

Review: Tales of Arise – Beyond the Dawn

Tales of Arise – Beyond the Dawn hits the market roughly 2 years after the original release. This was a game I played and enjoyed. However, since reviewing it, I haven’t given it a second thought. This isn’t to say that it was bland or poor. Instead, I’d say it was a suitable RPG with smooth combat, an interesting story, and a large world to explore. Yet, I find it somewhat strange that the developers chose such a large gap before suckling their audience back in again.

This open-world RPG was developed and published by Bandai Namco. Furthermore, it is a single-player experience that takes place approximately 1 year after the original story. Accordingly, it is recommended to play the base game before tackling the fun but short DLC.

Tales of Arise – Beyond the Dawn tells a story of a new world.

Though the two factions live in harmony on one new planet, you cannot change old habits. Sadly, not everyone is happy with the coexistence and this causes fighting and disputes. A young girl called Nazamil is on the run. This half-Renan and half-Dahnan hybrid is the daughter of a Renan lord. However, her fate is in the hands of the gods and the team from the original must work hard to steer her on the right path.

The world design and vibrant monsters are as loud and colourful as you’ll remember. Yet, if you are new to the franchise, you’ll enjoy classic JRPG imagery and wonderfully unusual monsters to kill. Alongside this, every battle is an eye-catching but over-the-top affair. Subsequently, the high-energy gameplay takes a little getting used to. Once you are comfortable with the combinations and special powers, you’ll adore every cruel encounter.

Familiar mechanics.

Tales of Arise – Beyond the Dawn follows many of the original mechanics and ideas. Consequently, I’m not going to cover them in great detail. Instead, feel free to read my review in the hyperlink in the opening paragraph. The party management, item selection, and exploration elements are not changed. I guess the adage of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is relevant.

Where this changes, though, is its reliance on side quests from the NPCs. Now, this mechanic isn’t anything new, but Bandai Namco uses it as their progression tool. If you are a gamer who loves a rich central storyline and a solid path to follow, you may become frustrated. However, if you enjoy flitting between objectives whilst you explore a large world, then this will tick many boxes.

The not-so-good.

In a new world filled with political intrigue and danger, I was expecting the quests to answer more questions. Disappointingly, this wasn’t the case. Tales of Arise – Beyond the Dawn skirts around every issue and rarely gives you any details. It felt like a politician avoiding the obvious answers. Though this doesn’t affect the gameplay, I’d have loved the game to fill in some voids whilst setting the political landscape.

The main quests involving Nazamil use well-trodden ideas from the Arise series and this was disappointing. The developer had scope to create a wholesome and unique perspective that aligns with the political horizon. Instead, it flits and flows between something that is all too familiar. This isn’t to say it is a poor experience, I was just hoping for more.

Tales of Arise – Beyond the Dawn looks great.

Though there are some shortcomings, I loved the overall presentation. The visuals are clean and vibrant and the world is fascinating to explore. Alongside this, animation is buttery smooth and each combat encounter benefits as a consequence. Though it is typical of a JRPG, I didn’t care. I adored the OTT imagery and the varied environments.

The audio is loud, energetic, and hard to ignore. The music is a brilliant blend of upbeat and melancholy songs. This excellent combination enhances the emotion without being clichéd. Though the sound effects were occasionally uncomfortable, they worked well with the fantasy edge.

Responsive controls.

This has a strange blend of hectic combat and slow-paced exploration elements. Subsequently, the controls needed to be well-considered and balanced. Fortunately, it is refined as you walk through each vast area, but wonderfully responsive as you slice up each monster. As such, the control system couldn’t be better.

This DLC comprises 40 missions and around 15 hours of fun. There are the normal skill progression elements and plenty of NPCs to talk to. As such, there is some replay value and longevity. However, don’t expect this to grab your attention the same way the base game did.

Tales of Arise – Beyond the Dawn is a decent DLC.

DLC can be considered a bit of a cash cow. Occasionally, you get limited value and even less content. Thankfully, Tales of Arise – Beyond the Dawn offers plenty of missions and loads of interesting elements. However, I believe it missed a trick as the story could have covered the political landscape and many of the deep emotional connections. Though this is missing, it is still good and I recommend buying it here! Can you help Nazamil? Explore the world, help the locals, and keep the Lord’s daughter safe.

Review: Bangarang

Bangarang bucks my recent gaming trend. I’ve covered Don’t Be a Dik Dik and Hands Off My Pecker. Both of these card games are unashamedly aimed at adults. However, Bangarang is a family-friendly affair that is fun, loud, and pretty darn hectic. Accordingly, it is the ideal game for family get-togethers or Christmas day.

This short, sharp round-based experience is aimed at gamers aged 8+. Sadly, younger gamers will become confused and may not understand the finer elements of the rules. Yet, our 6-year-old enjoyed the silly actions and raucous behaviour. This funny game combines Pictionary and Charades. As such, plenty is going on as everyone helps the guesser solve the problem.

What’s in the box of Bangarang

  • The packaging is colourful and strong. Inside, the contents are snug and this prevents you from losing any bits.
  • Bangarang has 80 clue cards. Consequently, there are plenty of rounds to play before things get repetitive.
  • A whiteboard allows you to draw plenty of pictures.
  • A whiteboard marker is provided.
  • Learn the basics with the user guide.

How do you play Bangarang?

Bangarang is a straightforward game. Players will grab a card with five clues. Your clue leads to a different item and it is your responsibility to act, sound, draw out, or use body language to explain your clue. At the start of each round, you must select a card that highlights which method you may use. After this, you have a short time to get through your clues and score as many points as possible.

This simple gameplay approach lasts 12 rounds. At the end of the game, the team with the highest score wins. Sometimes this isn’t easy to keep on top of as the madness unfolds. However, I found that the action was fun whether you were winning or losing. Consequently, I wasn’t too worried about the result.

Usability.

Child-friendly games must be easy to play and even easier to master. Luckily, Bangarang ticks both of these boxes. Though it took me a couple of rounds to get into the swing of things, I found it easy to explain the fundamentals. Moreover, my kids picked it up easily and they loved the miming and the drawing element.

Some clues may be alien to an 8-year-old. Subsequently, we had to make adjustments to the game to help them feel included. Yet, these problems were few and far between and they thrived in the team environment.

The toughest part of the game is keeping the score going and understanding when people get the clues right. With so many people shouting, it was easy to lose track. However, I found this to be funny rather than annoying, so it created an energetic and amusing atmosphere.

Build quality.

Card and board games have to take some rough and tumble. People get drunk and the contents get damaged. Luckily, this game is hard-wearing and made to last. The clue cards are chunky and easy to hold. Additionally, the font is easy to read and the contrasting colours are pleasant to the eye.

The whiteboard marker is small, so don’t expect to draw a masterpiece. Yet, this matters not as you don’t have time to go crazy. Instead, you’ll draw basic pictures to get your point across. The weak point is the whiteboard pen. The nib could become damaged so a gentle touch is needed to ensure longevity.

Is Bangarang worth it?

Family games and Christmas go hand-in-hand. Therefore, you’ll want to stock up on games that are fun but inoffensive. Thankfully, Bangarang is hilarious to play and just the right side of competitive. Accordingly, it makes for a great Christmas gift and I recommend buying it here!

Review: Shogun Showdown

Developed by Roboatino and Published by Goblinz Publishing & Gamera Games, Shogun Showdown is a turn-based rogue-lite strategy RPG with a, never seen before, addictive gameplay loop.

Playing games for review has its ups and downs, mostly downs but every bad game with below-expectation gameplay and story is all worth it in the end for that one big fish, that one game that really makes you love gaming again. I can confidently say, with many hours on this turn-based addiction, Shogun Showdown is that game.

The little Shogun Showdown

Not a lot in terms of story, at least not worth harping on about. But there is a plot, I think.

You are a shogun who is trying to defeat these shadowy figures. Every time you get overwhelmed and die, you get reincarnated and must return to fight them all once more.

This continues till you reach the end and kill all the big baddies that the game has to offer. I would not know. I for the life of me could not get to the end.

Speaking of which, let’s talk about gameplay.

A brand new gameplay

Feel free to correct me on this but my experience with Shogun Showdown has been one of awe. The gameplay loop of this game is unique to me.

Before getting into the details. I would like to give the skimmer an idea of what I mean. It is the dark souls of turn-based combat.

The gameplay loop in itself is quite simple. You play on a 2d track where you can turn and walk left or right. The track starts at four platforms up to 8 depending on the round. Each movement, including turning, takes one turn.

You attack by using these cards provided to you, each requiring a certain amount of turns to recharge after use. Selecting a card and using them both count as different turns.

So that was the short of it but it gets complicated.

After each win, you get either a new card or an upgrade for your cards. The upgrades could be more damage or less cooldown but also fire damage, poison damage, etc.

This being a Rogue-lite, once you lose, you must start from the beginning. However, winning gives you special skull points which can be traded at the main menu for brand new upgrades.

This is only the tip of the iceberg. The more you play, the more things unlock. From new characters, weapons and even permanent skills. It is a genuine addictive hoot of a time!

My Addiction

I have not felt like this since I first got into Vampire Survivors. However, unlike Vampire Survivors, this game never reaches a point where you just have to quit. The systems at play make it so that you can keep on going because the games are quick and the upgrades are very heavily impactful to the gameplay.

I have been addicted to this since my first play through and even now as I write this review, I feel the urge to go back in and play my heart out.

Shogun Showdown is a rare gem. One of those games that hook you from the very first round and keep pulling you back for more. The addictive gameplay loop, the strategic depth, and the thrill of unlocking new cards, upgrades, and characters are all part of what makes it so compelling.

Shogun Showdown is the kind of game that reminds you why gaming is such an incredible experience. And trust me, once you start, you’ll be just as hooked as I am.

Now if you’ll excuse me, there’s a Shogun to reincarnate.

Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate has been available as a mobile game for a while. However, this is the first time I’ve dipped my toe into the murky mutant-filled waters. Consequently, I had no idea of what to expect and how challenging the “normal” mode would be. This title kicked my ass repeatedly, and I had to stop myself from swearing. Yet, once I got into the swing of things, I couldn’t put it down.

This action rogue-like was developed and published by Super Evil Megacorp. Moreover, it can be enjoyed alone or cooperatively. The latter option is where the game excels, but I spent most of my time as a lone warrior. This didn’t undermine my experience, but I’d have loved some backup during the more challenging stages.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate tells a tale of despair.

If you are familiar with the franchise, you’ll know how close the protagonists are. They are like a family and when one is hurt or in trouble, the team works together to help. Things take a turn for the worse when their father and Sensei Splinter is ratnapped. When he is taken to a mystical dimension by a strange being, the turtles begin to panic. However, they quickly pull themselves together and create a plan to save their master and the world.

The outlandish plot incorporates many of the moralistic cartoon elements. What’s more, the characters are full of sass and there are plenty of witty and sharp one-liners to endure. On top of this, the action is fast-paced and there is a sense of beat ’em up gameplay. Now, this may not feel like a traditional rogue-like, but 90% of the action sits firmly in this camp. Accordingly, if you are a fan of the genre, you’ll adore this Jr Hades experience.

Plenty of upgrades.

The action revolves around a repetitive gameplay loop. Though the rooms vary and no playthrough is the same, there are deja vu moments. 4 chapters and 4 bosses stand between you and Master Splinter. Yet, it wouldn’t be a rogue-like if there wasn’t a sting in the tail. As the action comes to its inevitable conclusion, your prize is stolen from you again. Subsequently, you must complete run after run in the hope of completing your quest.

You may select one of the turtles for each run. Each of the heroes has strengths and weaknesses and you must exploit these if you are to succeed. En route, you will upgrade your tools and unlock new skills. Water, ooze, fire, and more support you as you tackle waves of tough foes. Additionally, there are mini-boss battles to face, challenges to overcome, and a shop to buy new gear.

If this wasn’t enough, there are artefacts to give you buffs and the ability to improve an array of character skills permanently. Each of these elements was amazing as they let you create a hero to match your play style. Though there were layers of planning, luck played a massive part. Consequently, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate can be disgustingly cruel or spectacularly easy.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate looks amazing.

Each room was packed with hordes of manic enemies and obstacles to avoid. Moreover, the latter levels are hectic and this should have caused problems. Luckily, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate never stuttered or failed. I experienced no glitches and the frame rate was consistently high. On top of this, the contrasting colours help you to navigate each claustrophobic stage. Though things can get a little out of hand, the smooth animation and excellent camera angle help you to play this with ease.

The audio was harsh, loud, and in your face. It was exactly what I expected and I loved the aggressive soundtrack and the wonderful ambient sounds. Moreover, the sound effects have a fantasy edge that matches the superhero theme. My only complaint was the constant one-liners. The turtles never stop yapping and this was distracting. Yet, if you can ignore their talking, you’ll love the atypical superhero edge.

Exceptional controls.

Though I expected the action to be more refined, the developer has done a great job with the control layout. There is plenty of button-bashing because of the hack-and-slash style of combat. Yet, once you understand how each element supports your cause, you will slow down and let the magic get to work. Though this isn’t aimed towards a younger audience, I believe children aged 10+ will be able to master the complexities in no time.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate oozes replay value. Each run is unique and there are drip-fed mechanics and new ideas throughout. What’s more, there are many secrets to discover and plenty of mini-bosses to eliminate. If you then add in the multiplayer gameplay and the various character builds, there is plenty to keep you coming back for more.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate is an excellent rogue-like experience.

This genre has grown on me over the years. I find the loss of progress challenging but I adore the sense of risk vs reward. Consequently, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate gets its approach spot on. Aesthetically it hits the right notes. Furthermore, the combat is slick and I love the various character builds and different upgrades. Death is inevitable, but this simply makes you come back for more. Subsequently, though it is tough, I loved it and I recommend buying it here! Can you restore balance and rescue Splinter? Choose your hero, master your skills, and defeat Shredder.
