The NZXT Swift Optical Switches are remarkably responsive while delivering a deft touch. The 0.2 ms response time complements the 8,000 Hz polling rate for instantaneous results. What’s more, 2-point actuation creates an unusual but impressive custom feel that improves your gaming experience.
Though I like the pre-installed switches, you can swap these out with the keycap puller and switch removal tool. Consequently, you can create the keyboard of your dreams without the need to solder and with limited expertise. This was great for newbie gamers who wish to experiment. The switches come with an impressive 100-million key press guarantee, so NZXT is providing a reliable and hard-wearing device.
I love wireless peripherals because I hate cable management. I’m not alone in this statement, but I’m always open to wired alternatives. The benefits usually outweigh the downsides and I like the low-latency connection and the lack of battery concern. Furthermore, some minor planning removes the cable management issues.
Usability.
I love RGB, but I’m happy to go without it if necessary. Fortunately, the Function 2 keyboard is loaded with RGB madness. If you so wish, you may allow the preloaded software to rule the roost. Yet, if you are feeling brave or creative, you can use the free-to-download software and customise your RGB or profile. This was great as it gives you as much or as little freedom as you wish.
If you’ve read my reviews, you know I’m pretty lazy. Subsequently, I normally punt for an easy life. Fortunately, the NZXT CAM software is straightforward to use and it requires little technical knowledge. What’s more, adjusting each profile and other key elements was a cinch. If you were to make an error, you can simply undo your work and start again. Therefore, the Function 2 keyboard is the ideal device for those who want an easy life or those who wish to be creative.
Finally, if you love to control your settings, media, or RGB with the touch of a button, you can with the media knob and the tactile side buttons. These handy tools are conveniently located and simple to operate. What’s more, it stops you from jumping into your settings when you are in the middle of a game.
Build quality.
If you want a well-designed and robust keyboard, you need to look no further. Every aspect of this device is built with comfort and longevity in mind. The keycaps are double-shot PBT for long-lasting fonts and a richer colour. Moreover, they resist unsightly grease stains and scratching. On top of this, the pre-lubed switches and plate-mounted stabilisers are remarkably smooth and are enjoyable to use when typing. I experienced no dead zones and every input was smooth and responsive.
On top of this, the case utilises a dual layer of foam for an enhanced acoustic experience. I love the clacky sound of mechanical devices, but I hate unwanted background noise. Fortunately, you enjoy every old-school click without any other noise. Finally, aerospace-grade aluminium has been used to improve rigidity. This creates a spectacular long-lasting case that will take some abuse.
Is the Function 2 keyboard worth it?
There are plenty of great gaming keyboards to choose from. However, you normally have to compromise, and that isn’t fun. Thankfully, the Function 2 keyboard packs an almighty punch without letting you down. If you want a straightforward experience, it ticks that box. Alternatively, maybe you like to experiment and try new switches or profiles? Well, it ticks those boxes as well. On top of this, it is lightning-fast and perfect for typing and gaming.
