Indie collective Owl Cave and UK independent publisher Mastertronic have announced that the point-and-click adventure game Richard & Alice is now available on Steam!

capsule_lg

Richard & Alice tells the story of two inmates in a curious future prison, set in a world where years of heavy snowfall have caused chaos and disorder around the globe. Investigate the circumstances of their incarceration and discover the secrets hidden within as the complex narrative unravels and you become immersed in this dark and powerful tale. You are forced to question your own personal journey and perception of what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ in this haunting account, and ultimately, how well do you know yourself and what would you do to survive?

Richard-Alice-01

Richard & Alice, the debut game by games PR specialist Lewis Denby and Starbound lead writer Ashton Raze, is an absorbing story-driven tale about family, loneliness, desperation and the weather – set in a post-apocalyptic world. Previously on Steam Greenlight, the game has been upvoted by the community and is now making waves on Steam with new achievements, trading cards, badges and emoticons.

There are secrets, lies and lots of snow.

Lewis Denby from Owl Cave commented: “It’s a great thing to see Richard & Alice on Steam. This is a game we decided to make because we wanted to explore character stories in video games, and the original plan was for a small game we could make quickly and move on from. But now here we are writing quotes for the Steam release PR campaign. It’s quite something!”

Richard-Alice-06

Ashton Raze from Owl Cave added: “I am very excited to see Richard & Alice on Steam, because it meant I got to design trading cards and emotes. This was a lifelong dream of mine, and finally that dream became a reality. The game being on Steam in itself is exciting but TRADING CARDS! Seriously. The achievements were right fun too. You’ll not find things like this in a novel.”

Stuart Morton, Executive Producer at Mastertronic, said: “It has been an absolute pleasure to have helped Lewis and Ashton bring Richard & Alice to Steam. This is a superb story beautifully executed and we’re thrilled to get the game out to a much wider audience for all to enjoy.”

Richard & Alice is available now on Steam and Get Games for Windows PC and to celebrate we’re giving away a massive 50% off for one week!

OCS Inventory NG – Installation and the Basic Configuration of the Management Server for Windows

clip_image001

From time to time we all have these great IT Stories we like to share with our family, friends, and co-workers about our bosses. My own personal experience came almost 4 years ago when I started the job where I work now and my Operations Lead comes to me as says “When you get some time I need you to obtain an inventory of what software that is currently being run on our development Network”. So here I just started and I am now expected to pull an inventory from the preverbal black hole on 80 to 90 Windows and UNIX machines; needless to say I was not completely happy about this. At this point I knew I had only 2 options…

1. Go to every machine physically and look up all the software on each.

2. Consult my Google Crystal Ball and find something a little more automated.

In the end I choose Option 2. Initially I was search for some sort of script that could just pull the info off of all the workstations and dump them into a share folder in .csv format on a server to organize with excel. Upon further research I stumbled across OCS Inventory NG; not only did it do all the things I needed it to do it worked with both Windows and UNIX. Best of all the price tag was right on it as well for my beginning IT Budget at my new job, it was FREE. So to make a long story short I was able to get him a complete list of all software on our development Network at the time a week and half later and now have this Inventory solution deployed on 2 other of my private networks.

The Version of that original management server almost 4 years ago was version 1.3.2 which I had in production until a month ago when I retired that server and replaced it with the current version 2.1 (Now version 2.1.1 is out as of this article).

Over the years I had noted that documentation for OCS Inventory NG was somewhat limited if not downright sparse for Windows Servers and if you did find one it was either in Spanish or French (The developers are from France) or if it was more comprehensive it was on Linux. So after I got through upgrading my current Management Server at work I decided to share my pain with cyber space once again and make a video on my YouTube channel.

This Video goes into the installation and basic configuration of the management server for windows, while the version demonstrated is version 2.1.1 this will work on any management server installation from Version 2.x on up. A part of the basic configuration will involve the security for the management server website and the MySQL database.

Below are some reference links that I mention in my Video…

Currently in co-development with Gearbox Software and 2K Australia, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is set in between the award-winning Borderlands and Borderlands 2,and brings low-gravity shoot ‘n’ loot mayhem to Pandora’s moon for the first time. Additionally, those who pre-order the game through participating retailers will receive the Shock Drop Slaughter Pit bonus content, which features intense zero-atmosphere combat against the fiercest enemies Pandora’s moon has to offer, and rewards players with unique in-game loot.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel offers gravity-bending gameplay with oxygen-propelled jetpacks, as well as new weapons, enemies, vehicles, and moon environments. Playing as four all-new character classes with unique skill trees, gamers will contribute to the rise of Handsome Jack and experience his origin story as he transforms into the megalomaniacal tyrant fans loved to hate in Borderlands 2.

“The teams at Gearbox and 2K Australia have combined the best talent from both studios to create a Borderlands experience that we know fans are going to love,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “For those that haven’t played the critically acclaimed franchise, there’s never been a better time to jump in than with Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.”

Review: Thomas Was Alone (iPad)

Not often enough does the opportunity to call a videogame ‘whimsical’ come about. Thankfully, Thomas Was Alone was released on the iPad giving me the perfect excuse to wax lyrical over its immense quantity of whimsy. For those tragically uneducated about Thomas and his loneliness, please allow me to summarise the game for you: Thomas Was Alone is a game that causes you to care about coloured quadrilaterals far more than you ever deemed previously possible, and then wraps them up in a nice package by throwing in some very satisfying puzzle platforming. Every single square or rectangle is a character you will grow to know… and in all likelihood love. It’s akin to eating a whole bag of Starburst where every new flavour you eat becomes your new favourite.

Meet Thomas.
Meet Thomas.
A vast majority of the plot revolves around Thomas, and his friends, coming to terms with their new surroundings, themselves, friendship, love, life, the universe, and everything. The entire game is narrated by Danny Wallace, who delivers both buttery warm feelings and comedic chuckles throughout. It’s an experience that remains unmatched in its execution. I can promise you after completing this game if I showed you a square piece of paper coloured orange that you will know their name, personal struggles, love interests, and favourite colour – that’s how beautifully crafted every character is in Thomas Was Alone.

The Pixel Cloud looms near.
The Pixel Cloud looms near.
You’ll smile, you’ll frown, you’ll smirk, you’ll gasp and cover your mouth, you may even literally laugh at loud – all to a wondrous and tranquil soundtrack. Your only true foe, aside from accidentally jumping into a pit of deadly toxic water or onto spikes, is The Pixel Cloud. Without wishing to spoil the main plot for you, I shall leave it at this: it is best avoided. It may seem as if I have focussed quite heavily on the story thus far, but don’t let that fool you into thinking the gameplay isn’t still worth talking about. It’s puzzle platforming in its purest form, but expertly tuned. You control several characters in each level, using a simple tap to swap between them, carefully placing each one in position so all of the friends can make it to their exit.

Every character has unique advantages within the level. John, for example, is long and tall with the ability to jump the highest. Whereas Claire, again for example, is a super hero and has the ability to float (unlike the others). These unique characteristics lead to the necessity of teamwork, with the band of friends having to help each other out if they’re all to make it out.

John bouncing on Laura while Claire watches. make your own context.
John bouncing on Laura while Claire watches. make your own context.
Thankfully the controls are simple and easy to use, as they should be. There’s really only four buttons: left, right, jump, and tap to switch character. Due to the basic nature of the platforming it means anything fiddly like a virtual d-pad is totally unnecessary. Which is absolutely welcome in my books, and makes Thomas Was Alone a brilliant port choice for the iPad.Do I need to say any more? What are you waiting for? Thomas is lonely. Go. Go now, free him from his life of loneliness. Free him and his friends to explore the world as only a two-dimensional rectangle can on your three-dimensional rectangular iPad.

Chris is my favourite. He's orange flavoured.
Chris is my favourite. He’s orange flavoured.
Oh! Also, if you’re into that whole Twitter thing, you should consider following the creator Mike Bithell over there. To say he’s rather active on there would be to do his timeline a disservice.
