Review: Mario vs. Donkey Kong

Mario vs. Donkey Kong Nintendo Switch 2024

When you think of your favorite Super Mario Bros. or Donkey Kong games . . . the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series probably doesn’t come to mind. But, if you were a Gameboy Advanced kid, you have likely played the first installment: a light-hearted crossover between two beloved Shigeru Miyamoto franchises, with an atmospheric semblance of old-school Jumpman, staring everyone’s favorite Italian plumber knocking down a necktie-d ape a peg or two.

Twenty years since 2004, the original Mario vs. Donkey Kong gets a highly polished remake with quality-of-life improvements and stellar visuals for the Nintendo Switch. If you have never played the original, or have puzzle-loving children or younger siblings, the 2024 version is worth a shot.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong came out in January of 2024 and is available on the Nintendo Switch.

Oooh, shiny!

Nintendo titles are not always known for their plotlines: Mario vs. Donkey Kong opens with a cutscene of Donkey Kong just chilling and watching television. He sifts through Shy Guy news broadcasts, an “mmm, banana!” channel, and ultimately a commercial about this new and shiny Mario windup toy. This ignites the childlike, oooh shiny appeal in DK’s eyes. So, he attempts to purchase one of the toys but it’s all sold out. In a bit of a fury, DK breaks into the toy factory itself and robs the place clean of all the windups, scaring a handful of toads. While running away, Mario makes an appearance and chases after him.

Donkey Kong watching the Mario windup toy commercial

There are several aspects of the remake that are different from the original. For one, a lot of little things are strangely removed, mostly voice lines. DK’s notably hilarious scream from 2004 is absent, as well as most of Mario’s dialogue. Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2024 used some of the pre-recorded vocal lines, as the game came out following Charles Martinet’s transition to being the “Mario Ambassador.” It is unclear as to why these changes exist.

While the overall story and ending(s) remain the same, there are slight changes in Mario’s and the toads’ demeanor. The protagonists are more friendly and sympathetic towards the selfish Donkey Kong, whereas in the original there are short scenes of the gang poking fun at him. These modern changes give off a more lighthearted tone, but again, the differences are rather pointless.

As light as a dumbbell

Is Mario vs. Donkey Kong remarkable in the gameplay department? No – it edges between a simple platformer and an easy puzzle game, and the mechanics are somewhat stiff. However, there are neat ideas incorporated into the 2024 version, such as the addition of a co-op mode where the second player is a toad. I found this co-op mode to be most appealing since it allowed me to play with my little sister, who had a blast. Players can also toggle between “casual” and “classic” difficulties, with the latter being supposedly harder, but there are not any radical differences. Mario vs. Donkey Kong is almost too simple, yet enjoyably goofy and family-friendly.

Mario doing a handstand in puzzle platformer Mario vs. Donkey Kong

The game appears to be light and bouncy like your typical Super Mario, but it is absolutely not. The controls are fine, yet rigid and heavy-feeling. Mario moves too slow in my opinion, and his jumps feel like I am trying to leap off of Jupiter. Occasionally, the control scheme feels imprecise, with questionable hitboxes and undeterminable gaps. On the other hand, there are a fair amount of cool character mechanics. Mario can jump, perform handstands to block falling objects (kind of impractical), equip hammers, do a backflip, throw objects, and more.

Most levels, at least in the main game, are unsurprisingly easy. For a puzzle platformer, it takes very little time to jump through stages. However, there are occasional difficulty spikes that come out of nowhere. Honestly, the first boss fight against Donkey Kong was kind of difficult due to his semi-erratic movements and the onslaught of falling debris.

In it for the long haul

There are over 130 levels to play, so while the stages themselves are short and straightforward, players will still get a solid 8-10 hours of main game playtime. There are 8 worlds with 8 levels per world, ranging from the classic DK Jungle to Merry Mini-Land to the Twilight City.

The Nintendo Switch version also includes extra “plus” levels and “expert” levels, which will certainly double your playtime. The plus stages add 8 new refreshing challenges per world, and then there are 16 expert stages, which players can only unlock by collecting at least 128 gold stars.

Finally, there is also a time attack mode. Players must get through stages under a specified time limit, of course. So . . . yes, the game offers loads of extra content. If you thought the main game was too easy, then the new and improved Mario vs. Donkey Kong made sure to throw in optional challenges!

Cartoon come to life

The remake looks super polished and absolutely amazing. It felt as if I were in Nintendo World just looking at it, with all the fine details and bright colors that pop. Donkey Kong has never looked so good!

Donkey Kong stealing Mario wind-up toys

In the Gameboy Advanced original, the cutscenes operated more like a slideshow; in 2024, players get to see incredibly crisp and fluid animations. I personally still feel the charm with all the updates. Again, the only downside is while the visuals have improved, most of the audio design has been removed. Still, the game’s soundtrack as per Nintendo is always whimsically charming.

Final thoughts

Ultimately, Mario vs. Donkey Kong is exactly what you would expect. Worth the full price? Maybe not, but still worth a try if you have never played the original, are incredibly fond of the series, or have little kids or siblings you want to play co-op with. Luckily, there are a lot of extra levels to explore – otherwise, if it were only an 8-hour game, a $50 price point is not worth it.

puzzle platformer level Mario vs. Donkey Kong

Mario vs. Donkey Kong is gorgeous, silly, and simple with some scattered challenges, and I suppose a remake never hurt anybody regarding a title that came out decades ago . . .

Review: Jackbox Survey Scramble

Christmas is a time of giving. Furthermore, it is a time to meet friends and family and spend quality time together. Whether it is a film, a board game, or a video game, it matters not. The important thing is the time you spend together. If time is limited, you’ll want something addictive and easy to master. Moreover, it needs to be quick to complete—step forward Jackbox Survey Scramble.

This family-friendly quiz game was developed and published by Jackbox Games, Inc. What’s more, it is a 2-10-player experience that can be enjoyed with a TV and any mobile device. This flexibility was impressive and I enjoyed its straightforward nature. Additionally, you can drop in and out of games if something comes up.

Jackbox Survey Scramble has a classic quiz show approach.

Usually, no story = no depth. However, this isn’t the case when you play Jackbox Survey Scramble. Instead, it is the simple action that makes it incredibly moreish. Furthermore, anyone can pick this up and give it a go. I loved this inclusive design as my kids felt like they were involved. Though some of the categories were beyond them, they laughed regardless.

The action revolves around 4 game modes. The developer has promised additional categories in the future. My understanding is this will be free to download, so this small title will evolve with time. Each of the modes uses the same survey-based concept. Moreover, there are popular and unpopular answers to find. Consequently, you’ll have to scratch your head and activate that grey matter.

Good old-fashioned gameplay.

The 4 modes are Hilo, Speed, Squares, and Bounce. The first 2 are practically identical. However, the Speed mode tests your pace and knowledge against every other player. This is hilarious and it caused no end of arguments. Squares was an enjoyable tactical game of noughts and crosses. Effectively you must pick your category and prevent your opponent from completing a 3 grid line. This sounds easy but every minor mistake is crucial. If you cannot pick the highest value number, you’ll lose the round and any advantage.

The split between finding the most popular and the least popular answers was slightly skewed. Most people are wired to think of the positives and thinking of something that may or may not exist was challenging. Yet, I liked the twist on the gameplay and the layers of depth that it added. Additionally, my kids were surprisingly good at thinking outside of the box, so they enjoyed this unusual element.

Can you guess the answers in Jackbox Survey Scramble?

Jackbox Survey Scramble looks pleasant.

The developer hasn’t gone over the top aesthetically. Instead, everything is clean and vibrant, and pleasant to look at. Furthermore, the room code is always visible, so players can drop in as and when they like. The screen is easy to read and I liked the contrasting colours and the clear text.

The audio has an exciting edge that adds drama and pressure to each round. There are obnoxious sound effects and OTT announcements. Moreover, you’ll hear a ticking clock and high-energy music. Though it didn’t monopolise the experience, it worked perfectly with the core mechanics and the short rounds.

Excellent controls.

The ability to play this using mobile devices was key. Simply scanning the QR code or entering the password was a cinch. What’s more, every element was responsive. The only issue you may encounter is a poor phone signal. This could delay things so just be mindful of this minor downside.

4 game modes may seem too little. Yet, it is the variety of questions and the ever-evolving answers that keep this alive. The promise of new content and versatility make this appealing as well. As such, there is plenty of replay value and longevity if you have a good group of friends.

Jackbox Survey Scramble is great fun.

I’m a sucker for quiz games. The competitive action and easy-to-master gameplay keep me coming back for more. Additionally, I love gaming with my family and friends. Though Jackbox Survey Scramble is refined, it has plenty of depth and loads of questions. Accordingly, I love it and I recommend buying it here! Can you top every leaderboard? Guess the answers, pick your tactics, and win every game.

Review: Uncle Chop’s Rocket Shop

Uncle Chop’s Rocket Shop is a unique indie roguelike set in a whimsical yet challenging universe. Developed by Beard Envy, this game puts players in the shoes of Wilbur, a mechanic stuck in a time loop, who repairs spaceships to pay his rent—or risk being obliterated by his tyrannical boss. This concept blends humour, creativity, and intense decision-making, making for a highly engaging yet polarizing experience.

At its core, the game revolves around repairing increasingly complex ships while navigating an ever-present pressure to meet financial quotas. It offers two modes of play: the methodical Focused Fixing and the chaotic Frantic Fixing. The former allows players to tackle three jobs per day without the constraint of time limits, ideal for learning the mechanics. The latter ramps up the intensity by introducing timers, rewarding efficiency but punishing mistakes harshly. This dual approach to gameplay caters to varying playstyles and ensures replay-ability for both casual and hardcore audiences.

The art and humour are a treat

The most striking aspect of the game is its immersive repair mechanics. Using a manual called the Grimoire, players diagnose and resolve issues ranging from cleaning spaceship toilets to repairing VR headsets and recalibrating reactors. The manual itself is a delightful piece of design, blending humour with detailed, intuitive instructions. However, as the tasks grow more intricate, the challenge escalates sharply. Mastering the manual becomes crucial, as any mistake—like missing a screw or misinterpreting instructions—can derail progress and lead to significant penalties.

Visually, Uncle Chop’s Rocket Shop is a treat. Its art style has drawn comparisons to Adventure Time and Rick & Morty, with its quirky, colourful aesthetic complemented by dry humour and amusing character designs. The supporting cast of alien clients adds personality, with each presenting unique challenges and interactions. These elements make the gameplay loop feel less like grinding and more like a comedic space sitcom.

Definitely worth the steep learning curve

The game is not without its flaws. The steep difficulty curve, particularly on the third day of each cycle, has been a common point of critique. Players must often purchase expensive workshop upgrades or machinery early on to prepare for these mandatory challenges—actions that are not always intuitive. Without prior knowledge or a stroke of luck, it’s easy to fall into a trap of financial ruin or failed runs, which some players find frustrating rather than motivating. Furthermore, timed objectives in Frantic Mode add an extra layer of stress that may not appeal to everyone, especially those looking for a more relaxed experience.

I have also noted issues with balancing and progression. For instance, certain upgrades feel underwhelming, offering minimal impact despite their high costs. Beyond its core gameplay, the game weaves in narrative layers with its time loop mechanic and intriguing side characters. Choices made during the day can lead to different outcomes at night, introducing branching storylines and the opportunity to join factions that alter the flow of the game. This depth, combined with procedurally generated challenges, ensures no two playthroughs feel the same.

The verdict

In summary, Uncle Chop’s Rocket Shop is a brilliantly imaginative game with a solid foundation of engaging gameplay, eccentric humour, and stylish presentation. However, its unforgiving difficulty and steep learning curve may alienate players seeking a more accessible experience. For those willing to invest time in mastering its mechanics, it offers a rewarding and memorable journey. It’s a must-play for fans of roguelikes and offbeat indie titles but may require some patience to fully appreciate its depth and quirks.

If you’re in the market for a game that combines spaceship repair with existential crises and absurd humour, Uncle Chop’s Rocket Shop is well worth checking out

News: Funko Fusion DLC

0

Funko Fusion was a game I covered in September (Here is my review). I looked forward to playing it and had mixed feelings about my experience. I scored it a 7/10 and concluded my thoughts accordingly. “Unfortunately, I feel that Funko Fusion was a little rushed. Moreover, the volume of bugs and the lack of cooperative action support this claim. However, this will be a great adventure title once the issues are ironed out. Yes, it is repetitive, but I’m not sure that matters. It will be the perfect family game that can be enjoyed casually.”

It has now had plenty of time for the bugs to be ironed out and more content to be added. In fact, that’s why we are here today! 10:10 Games proudly announces its latest DLC for Funko Fusion. The Office Cameo Pack and The Mega Man DLC. These are the latest and greatest additions to a game full of potential.

What’s included in the Funko Fusion The Office Cameo Pack?

The Office Cameo Pack DLC adds four new playable characters. Consequently, you can play as Michael, Dwight, Jim and Pam, each complete with their own unique weapons and skills—to the multiplatform franchise crossover game.

In addition, this DLC features a unique mini bonus Cameo level that lets fans explore a recreation of Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton Branch in-game. The level features beloved elements of the celebrated TV series and has plenty of easter eggs for longtime fans to discover.

What characters will I see in the Mega Man DLC?

  • Dr. Wily – The infamous mastermind and rival of Mega Man, bringing his larger-than-life persona and unique flair to the game.
  • Proto ManMega Man’s enigmatic ally, offering players a chance to dive into his storied legacy while exploring his unique in-game abilities.

The Mega Man Pack DLC celebrates the franchise’s nostalgic charm while adding fresh and exciting gameplay elements to Funko Fusion. Whether you’re a diehard Mega Man fan or new to the universe, this crossover brings the best of both worlds.

Both DLCs are available for $9.99 on Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Nintendo Switch owners can get their copy in early 2025.

Hands Off My Pecker – The fast-paced, quick-thinking game of stealth and speed. Have you got what it takes to spot the animal, and claim it before your opponents do? Let nothing come between you and victory with this laugh-out-loud card game for adults. Movies Games and Tech Christmas Guide 2024

If you want a short and amusing card game for 3 to 6 people, this is the game for you. The inappropriate and borderline childish humour tickled me throughout. Additionally, the imagery is silly and I loved the build quality. Though this isn’t a game for kids, adults will cherish every immature moment. (More information can be found here!)

The card games keep coming!

Don’t Be a Dik Dik – A hilarious card game for grown-ups who love nature and a little naughtiness! Titter at the tufted titmouse, chuckle at the large cockchafer, snigger at the sticky willy, but whatever you do, don’t get left holding the Dik Dik!

People think that making others laugh is easy. However, there is more to it than simply writing smutty words and schoolyard stupidity. Delivering the perfect one-liner that matches the theme of each card is easier said than done. Thankfully, Don’t Be a Dik Dik gets the balance just right. Furthermore, there is a pleasant blend of guttural humour and intelligent jokes that will increase its appeal. (More information can be found here!)

Review: Parcel Corps

Parcel Corps is a bit of a slow burner. Ironically, this game is fast-paced and fun once you get past the opening arena. However, until then, you must put up with the slow gameplay and easy-to-complete stages. If you have played Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio, you will have a feel for the concept and core mechanics. Yet, if you have somehow missed both of these epic games, you need not fear. Thankfully, Parcel Corps does a great job explaining its central ideas and you are up and running in no time.

This sports-based adventure title was developed by Billy Goat Entertainment and published by Secret Mode. Moreover, it is a single-player and online competitive game. Accordingly, you can show your skills to a global audience once you’ve mastered the basics. Though I didn’t explore the online mode, I can see how much fun it could be. The ability to pull off rad tricks and race across tight areas is thrilling and enjoyable. Furthermore, if you have a great group of friends, you will have a fantastic time together.

Parcel Corps is a story of profit and rivalry.

Though Parcel Corps story is a little weak, it is fun to listen to regardless. Effectively, the game wants you to put your ethics to one side as you work your butt off for a huge profit. You pick from 3 delivery companies and 3 generic characters. Once you have made your mind up, the game begins and you are thrown into the mixer.

I was disappointed that there is no character creator and each of the prebuilt characters has the same skillset and abilities. Consequently, it doesn’t matter who you pick and this reduces the opportunity to play the game differently. These issues rear their ugly head in the latter moments as well. Unfortunately, the money you earn can only be invested in cosmetic gear and this was annoying. I’d have loved to improve my bike to increase my speed, traction, braking, or jumping height/distance. None of these options came to light and every parkour element relies on great timing and little else.

Enjoyable missions.

Though the lack of customisation was frustrating, the missions were enjoyable. The game asks you to explore new areas and sign up fresh companies to your app. As you work with each new endeavour, you must complete delivery jobs in a delivery rush event. Effectively, you must dash from location to location delivering as many parcels as you can within the timescale. If you are successful and you increase your area score enough, you open new areas and the game rolls on.

Parcel Corps demands that you master plenty of basic moves to traverse each stage! There are rails to grind, walls to ride, and plenty of gaps and boxes to leap over. On top of this, as the game progresses, you must plan your approach if you are to complete the toughest of challenges. Goals are located in some weird and wonderful places and reaching them takes plenty of patience and skill. Though this may infuriate less able gamers, I loved the challenge and the sense of reward when I completed each job.

Parcel Corps has a striking art style.

The vivid world is a glorious picture of loud colours and clean lines. What’s more, you must pay attention throughout if you wish to explore every nook and cranny. The interesting stage design forces players to think outside of the box. Moreover, you’ll have great fun diving down narrow alleyways and testing out every trick in your arsenal. Though the action is fast-paced, the game rarely faltered. Parcel Corps performs admirably and I rarely had an issue with bugs or frame rate drops.

The audio is as loud and annoying as you’d expect. Each song is upbeat and stereotypically associated with high-adrenaline sports. Additionally, the sound effects are basic but suitable. The noise of metal on metal was delightful and I loved the realistic crunch of your tyres as they glided over each surface.

Challenging controls.

Learning the fundamentals is challenging and mind-blowing. The left analogue stick is used to speed you up and steer the bike. Moreover, there are separate inputs for braking, drifting, and grinding. On top of this, you have to time your jumping to perfection if you wish to overcome the toughest obstacles. Luckily, there is a decent tutorial to help, but you’ll have to invest plenty of time and effort if you wish to master the controls.

If you want plenty of variety and tough missions, then Parcel Corps is for you. There is a pleasant mixture of missions to complete and big enough areas to test new tricks and ride freely. Alongside this, there is the online mode to try if that is your thing.

Parcel Corps is a good casual game.

Though there is plenty to see and do, I consider Parcel Corps a decent casual game. I wouldn’t play this for hours on end. Instead, I picked it up between other games when I wanted a rest. This approach ensured that I didn’t get bored with each delivery and I could explore every area to its max. It has its shortcomings, but I accepted them because the pros outweigh the cons. Accordingly, despite the issues, I like it and I recommend buying it here! Can you become a profitable courier? Choose your company, learn the basics, and deliver as many parcels as possible.

Nintendo Christmas

Tick tock…It is almost time for Christmas. Accordingly, there will be drinks, laughter, and plenty of gaming to be had. When I think about family-friendly experiences, I instantly turn to Nintendo and its large range of interesting and captivating games. Moreover, the accessories are vibrant, and there is something for everyone.

This Nintendo Christmas article will point out some of the best games to play this December. Some of these titles are old, but still worth getting your teeth into. What’s more, I’ll pick some of our favourite games that we’ve played and reviewed.

A closer look at Nintendo Christmas.

SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS – Shadow the Hedgehog is back. SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS, has an all-new collection featuring two unique experiences! Play as Shadow in a brand-new story campaign featuring never-before-seen abilities! Alternatively, speed through iconic stages from Shadow’s history.

“Sonic x Shadow generations is a must-have for Sonic fans. Sonic Generations remains one of the best Sonic games of all time, and the addition of Shadow Generations elevates this package to a whole new level. The new mechanics and collectables in Shadow’s adventure add depth and replay-ability, while the visual upgrades and refined hub world make it clear that SEGA has learned from its past mistakes, especially when compared to Sonic Frontiers.” Dawid Wisniewski, Oct 21st 24.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land – One day on Planet Popstar, a dark vortex appears over Dream Land. Kirby is among those sucked into the vortex and finds himself in an abandoned civilization informally called the “new world.” Here he discovers that the Waddle Dees from Dream Land are being kidnapped by the native wildlife, the Beast Pack.

This is one of those games that never loses my interest, even after completing it! So in comparison to the many others I’ve tried and loved, I would play this game over and over again. Especially when I can play around with the many new transformations that Kirby can possess after absorbing and copying the enemies’ abilities.” Natosha M, Mar 29th 22.

More games.

Mario Vs Donkey Kong – Mario is the owner of Mario’s Toy Company. It is a toy enterprise in which he sells a series of small wind-up toys called “Mini-Marios”. After seeing a television advertisement for the Mini-Marios, Donkey Kong immediately falls in love. Accordingly, he sets out to the toy store to get one, only to find that they are sold out. Furious, Donkey Kong breaks into Mario’s toy factory across the street and steals all of the Mini-Marios. Consequently, this prompts Mario to chase after Donkey Kong to get his toys back.

“Mario vs Donkey Kong shines as a must-have title for Nintendo Switch owners, delivering an enchanting blend of classic charm and modern gameplay. With its captivating visuals, engaging level design, and delightful multiplayer experience, it stands as a testament to the timeless appeal of the Mario and Donkey Kong franchises. Whether playing solo or with friends, players are sure to find themselves immersed in the captivating world of Mario vs Donkey Kong time and time again. And if you were a fan of the original, you will love the new additions!” Andrew Edney, Mar 3rd 24.

Ember Knights – You play as Ember Knights, the last spark of hope of a universe in turmoil. Praxis, the mad sorcerer, has syphoned the life out of the Ember Tree. Furthermore, he fled through the four Prime Worlds spreading corruption in his path. In solo or co-op (up to 4 players), use powerful weapons and skills to hack and slash deadly hordes, defeat epic bosses, free the decaying Prime Worlds and restore energy to the Ember Tree!

“This is a genre that drives people insane. The thought of losing everything is harsh and picking up the pieces is harsher still. Yet, it is this approach that demands a sense of grit and determination. That “just one more go” attitude pushes you past that last death. This is what makes the genre great, and this is what makes Ember Knights so appealing.” Daniel Waite, Sept 4th 24.

Nintendo Christmas accessories.

Pokemon Blossom Nintendo Switch Controller “Though the Pokemon Blossom Nintendo Switch Controller doesn’t have every Nintendo feature built-in, I wasn’t too worried. I believe that the striking imagery and the comfortable ergonomic design make up for the missing features. What’s more, the mappable rear buttons and the easy-to-use Bluetooth connectivity are perfect for gamers who wish to add an elite edge while enjoying trouble-free gaming. These reasons alone are enough for me to recommend buying this wonderful controller.” Daniel Waite, Dec 10th 24.

Enhanced Nintendo Switch Wireless Controller Fortnite“Wireless gaming is convenient and easy to set up. Moreover, the inclusion of motion control ensures that your experience is immersive. If you run low on juice you can plug the controller in with the 10-metre cable. Yet, with a 30+ hour battery life, I can’t see this being an issue. Review: Dagon: Complete Edition

Three years since its original release, Dagon is back, with the complete edition serving up additional helpings of Lovecraftian horror. Is it worth checking out? Or should the tales have stayed on the pages?

Descent Into Madness

Lovecraft and his tales have captured the attention of millions, long before my time. Just uttering his name will garner interest from fans around the world, including myself. Lovecraftian inspired games like Call Of The Sea and to a lesser extent BloodBorne which are some of my personal favourites in this genre. So with that being said, Dagon: Complete Edition caught my eye upon its announcement. In 2021, Dagon was released as a love letter to HP Lovecraft and with this edition, developers Bit Golem have expanded upon this with three additional DLCs to bulk up the package. The concept for this interactive novel is simple: tales of Lovecraft are told through 3D environments and animations, coupled with full voice narration for each tale and it is just wonderful. Each tale is fully brought to life with such atmospheric beauty you can’t help but feel you are living the nightmare yourself.

Each of the four tales available tell different stories of nightmares, with the exception of The Little Glass Bottle DLC which has a lighter tone. Each story feels different and varied from the rest. The main story of Dagon tells the story of a morphine addicted officer during his time in World War 1. It’s a gripping tale as the unnamed officer deals with figuring out what is reality and what is fiction as he delves further and further into the madness. It’s a fantastic tale that had me hooked from start to finish, mainly due to the absolutely superb voice acting. Each tale is narrated so emotionally and wonderfully that it’s hard not to feel invested in these characters’ trials and tribulations. The other three tales depict some of Lovecraft’s early short stories that are equally as gripping. If you’re a fan of Lovecraft or fans of interactive novels, then you’ll feel right at home. It’s important to note though that this game, if you can call it that, is not long, at all. You can finish all four tales in around 90 minutes which made me yearn for a longer experience with these stories.

Understanding Expectations

It’s important to understand what type of experience you’ll receive with an interactive novel like Dagon. There is little gameplay on offer here, as the main goal of the game is for you to experience a novel in visual form. The majority of your inputs will be to click a single button to advance the dialogue or the scene. You cannot walk around or move at all but the game does attempt to add some elements of gameplay to hold the players’ attention. You can zoom in on environments and spin the camera around so you can fully immerse yourself in that specific scene. The zoom mechanic also allows you to find hidden collectibles in scenes which reveal trivia and information on Lovecraftian lore, along with collectibles that reveal trivia and facts about Lovecraft himself. This is a welcome addition to the interactive novel format as it allows the player to feel engaged and part of each scene. However, it can also have a negative effect, as at times I felt I was looking around the scene instead of fully concentrating on what was in front of me. It is these collectibles that offer the only real form of replay ability as you can replay the tale to collect them all.

This type of game is never going to be for everyone but for me it feels like one of the most interactive novels as having to find the specific object in the scene to advance the story really made me feel part of the adventure. Perhaps for further games from the developer in this space, the added ability to walk around the environment would help catapult this game into the eye of more players. The tales on offer in this game warrant the creation of fully fledged games to help bring Lovecraft to more people around the world.

Gothic Horror Gorgeousness

Games that describe themselves as a visual interactive novel need to deliver when it comes to presentation and Dagon does that in spades. Every scene is dripping in a haunting gothic aesthetic to help propel the emotions of the story and truly made me feel part of these nightmares. With the exception of The Little Glass Bottle DLC, which deploys an equally gorgeous cell shaded look for its tale, each story is unequivocally Lovecraftian. The environments look haunting, whilst the monsters that appear look horrifying and daunting during the brief but significant moments when they appear. It’s a beautiful game, so much so that at times, when I was supposed to continue the story, I would stop and marvel at the environments around me. Colours pop and explode throughout each critical moment, making the cinematic highpoints of each tale feel even more impactful. A superb effort in visual presentation to help encapsulate Lovecraft’s visions and tales; you can really tell the developers are huge fans of his work.

Similarly, both sound design and musical score are top notch. As mentioned previously, the voice acting in each tale is phenomenal and really makes each narrator memorable, with the unnamed officer in the main story the particular standout. I really felt the terror and the dread of these characters as they descend further into their own nightmares. Sound design in general is excellent, in particular creaking doors opening in a suspenseful manner or trudging through mud and sludge sounding particularly unpleasant. The soundtrack is also a strong point for the game. Whilst the music is not continuously present, it appears during cinematic moments of the tale with a memorable unnerving soft tone that is designed to heighten your feeling of being uncomfortable. A great effort across the board with sound design and score.

Verdict

Dagon: Complete Edition is a love letter to some of HP Lovecraft’s earliest tales. It tells gripping narratives across four separate tales with superb visuals and sound design. This type of media is certainly not for everyone but for fans of Lovecraft there is enough to satisfy your hunger with the in game collectibles on offer to uncover. It’s just a shame the experience is extremely short; I long for games that can tell these tales but in a AAA format. But for now, this will certainly do. See you in the madness!

Review: Necro Story

Necro Story is a game of 2 halves. The first half should be captivating and interesting, but it lacks energy. However, if you can trudge through the flat elements, you’ll enjoy a humour-filled second half that will make you smile and laugh as you tackle monsters and other fantasy creatures.

I’ve not played any other games from the developer, but I’ve read the reviews. My peers state that Healer’s Quest has witty dialogue punching through every interaction. This doesn’t surprise me, and Necro Story replicates this approach. Yet, it doesn’t get the balance right, as the opening chapters feel flat and lacking in life (quite literally).

This auto-battling adventure game was developed and published by Rablo Games. Moreover, it is a single-player experience with a ghostly edge. There are some minor puzzles to solve and plenty of fighting to endure. On top of this, you have dungeons, castles, and a grim Underworld to explore. This blend of locations was phenomenal and the developer should be applauded for the interesting and varied arenas.

Necro Story tells a great, albeit ridiculous story.

Punchy, witty, and well-balanced stories make my heart sing! Necro Story delivers this and so much more. This hearty and often overpowering approach was fantastic. Once you get past the subdued opening, the dialogue will make you laugh out loud. Additionally, the excellent characters and wonderfully paced story keep you interested throughout.

You play the part of a necromancer who has been napping for years. During his slumber, humanity has all but been decimated. Accordingly, you must right the wrongs and save the world with the help of a ghostly friend. Capturing souls and building a team of fighters forms the story’s backbone. Furthermore, a trip to the Underworld is a must if you are to become a hero.

Got to catch them all… Not Pokemon

The adventure elements play a key role. You explore different locations whilst searching for treasure and a way to progress. This was great as sneaky little clues highlight which path you should take. Though this may reduce the difficulty for some, I liked the guidance. With so many combat encounters en route, I’d hate to aimlessly walk around.

The combat combines 2 core elements. First, you build a party of every monster you collect. If you capture their soul, they can join your team to help you fight. This was great as there was a Pokemon-like edge that would appeal to a greater audience. Additionally, you can adjust your playstyle for different enemies.

Alongside this, you unlock different spells. There are 20 in total and 5 schools of magic to pick from. This was impressive as each unique spell can be the difference between winning and losing. The spellcasting was the defined combat element that prevented Necro Story from being an exclusive auto battler.

Necro Story is great to look at.

The Necro Story world is easy to navigate. The simple arenas are compact but full of detail. The developer has chosen a slightly hazy art style that has a dreamy edge. Though this won’t appeal to everyone, I liked the cool colours and the easy to look at world. What’s more, the backdrops were fascinating. Each unique area was interesting to explore and there was a sense of creative freedom and fantasy in every location.

The audio is whimsy and amusing. The lighthearted dialogue is complemented by the upbeat songs. What’s more, the silly but loud sound effects were great to listen to. Though it should have become tiresome, it rarely bothered me.

Excellent controls.

This isn’t a game that requires pinpoint accuracy. However, there are moments when responsive inputs are essential. This blend of calm and hectic action keeps you alert. Thankfully, the simple controls ensure it is easy to keep on top of.

Necro Story has a nice blend of longevity and replay value. With so many monsters to capture and plenty of unique team formations, you can test yourself repeatedly. Additionally, there are loads of secrets to discover as you make your way to the Underworld. Subsequently, you can return to this to discover new areas or try a different approach.

Necro Story is a good indie game.

I love a game that tries out new things. However, Necro Story doesn’t break the mould, but it delivers a pleasant range of mechanics and an interesting story. Moreover, the pacing is good and the combat is interesting and challenging. Accordingly, it is a good indie game and I recommend buying it here! Can you save humanity? Brush off your robe, learn new skills, and make every creature bow at your feet.

Review: Totally Spies! Cyber Mission

Totally Spies Cyber Mission is a family-friendly affair that will drive parents to distraction. The simple gameplay, underwhelming puzzles, and rudimentary stage design were enough to turn me off. However, this did not bother my children who adored every basic problem and colourful stage that they faced. What’s more, the ability to play this as a 3-player cooperative adventure got them very excited.

This puzzle adventure title was developed by Balio Studios and published by Microids. It plays out from a bird’s eye perspective and the goals are well laid out. A helpful light points younger children to their next objective to reduce confusion. However, this can be removed if older children wish to increase the difficulty. This was a great design choice as it keeps things balanced and reduces parental guidance and interaction.

Totally Spies Cyber Mission is a story of doom and gloom.

The 3 glamorous spies are settling into a new life in Singapore. These Beverly Hills girls don’t know what is about to hit them. However, their training and special tools help them to overcome every obstacle they face. Whether it is an icy spray, a ring to highlight mysterious action, or a bubble gun to blind your opponents, these heroines have them all.

The streets of Singapore have become a dangerous place. A mysterious menace skulks in the shadows as they plan to upset anyone in their wake. However, the three spies will not accept this and they undertake a dangerous mission to restore order. The girls must explore Aiya University, the bustling streets, and the dank underground if they wish to restore order.

Simple puzzles.

The action takes place across 5 unique missions. Each stage is slightly different, but the basic puzzles and enemy encounters rarely change. The girls must use stealth and interactive objects to avoid detection. Alternatively, they may sneak in the shadows or use their tools to distract each guard. Alongside this, there are basic puzzles to complete to open new areas.

The puzzles usually ask you to flip switches, move boxes or cars, or push buttons. Occasionally, you must use a specific agent to overcome each problem you face. This wasn’t a problem as it was easy to identify who was needed and what they had to do to proceed. At the end of each stage, there was a boss encounter. Like the rest of the gameplay, this is a simple endeavour that involves some minor problem-solving. Consequently, though it is basic, it is ideal for its intended audience.

Totally Spies Cyber Mission has a dated appeal.

Totally Spies Cyber Mission lacks a modern polish. Though the levels are interesting to explore, they lack depth and detail. Moreover, the assets are used repeatedly and this creates a sense of deja vu. I liked the simple-to-understand enemy field of view and the vibrant colour palette. Additionally, each world had a unique backdrop and this prevented things from becoming boring.

The audio made me cringe multiple times. The annoying one-liners drove me to distraction and the sound effects were suitable at best. Though the music adds some elements of drama and depth, this won’t make you say “Wow”. Instead, you are more likely to be driven mad by the constant sass of the protagonists.

Tidy controls.

Thankfully, Totally Spies Cyber Mission is a cinch to play. The tidy controls are easy to master and the tutorial is straightforward and quick to complete. Subsequently, younger gamers will not lose patience as they learn to master each input. Alongside this, the helpful guidance system prevents inexperienced players from wasting time. This was a godsend as parents will not have to get involved.

Each of the 10 stages has plenty of collectables to find. Though they have little impact on the core gameplay, they are worth searching for. As you find special chests hidden in each world, you will unlock blueprints. These blueprints can be used to improve your character or your gear. This was great, but you can only unlock the blueprints if you have collected the in-game currency. Consequently, you must search high and low if you wish to improve every spy to their full potential.

Totally Spies Cyber Mission is a great game for kids.

I cannot stress this enough, Totally Spies Cyber Mission is not a game for adults. You can play this with them and you will have a great time together. Yet, you are likely to be driven to distraction as the repetitive gameplay loop and rudimentary action will not test you. However, it is this approach that is appealing to younger gamers. Accordingly, though it drove me barmy, I recommend buying it here! Can the spies save the day? Master your tools, explore each area, and overcome the mysterious menace.
