Review: Dirt Rally

Some of my favourite racing games of all time were the old Colin McRae Rally titles of yesteryear. With Codemasters recent ‘Americanised’ changes to the revamped franchise, the hardcore rally fans have had little to sink their tyres into. Admittedly the Dirt series has had some great, and well deserved, reception over the years, but it’s finally time to revisit what made Codemasters a very real threat to any racing game on the market.

Originally released in early access via Steam in 2015, Dirt Rally slides its way to consoles after some fan feedback, inevitable tweaking and multiple extra additions. Such as the focus is, you’ll be largely alone on your blistering travels across the worldly stages. The co-driver and their meticulous instructions being the only help you’ll get during each event. Being a much more authentic interpretation of motorsport predictably comes with a certain degree of difficulty to the player too. The handling and physics models have been completely revamped from the ground up to ensure a level of realism that the game prides itself upon, even to the point where it states so after the games’ initial splash screens.

2000s_FordFocusRS2007_Germany_04_A [1100]
Focus on the corner
The result, aside from the lack of a ‘rewind’ feature, is that you’ll initially, and for quite some time, struggle. You’ll detest the first hairpin you encounter, resent the next chicane and be justly terrified of any long straight. The early stages are just as punishing as the last due to the games relatively steep learning curve. Tweaking the in-game assists, such as the level of traction control and stability, can go some distance in aiding you. However to truly appreciate the nuances of the handling system, you’ll have to delve into the ever intimidating car setup menus. Brake biases, suspension settings and all the tinkering you can imagine can be performed here. If you wish your 60’s Cooper to be a little more ‘flicky’ through the bends, then this is where (somewhat ironically) you’ll spend a chunk of your time, in an attempt to save time.

It’s not all clinical menu fiddling however, Dirt Rally houses an almost RPG nature within its team building side during the games’ career. On top of purchasing cars, paying potentially hefty repair bills and even upgrading aspects of your car, you can hire and fire specialists that ultimately compliment your racing style. Due to the time it takes between acquiring new vehicles, it won’t be uncommon to form a certain bond of attachment with your current car, and team, as you all learn the subtle ins and outs.

Rallycross_TopTier_Lydden_01_A [1098]
There’s even an option for manual wipers, should you insist on such a thing
The credit currency system adds an extra risk/reward structure that further increases the tension during the multi-stage events. A few small bumps and bangs near the start of the stage might not seem too important at the time, but due to the cumulative damage, it soon starts adding up. The seemingly insignificant visual details in the game can teach you harsh lessons too. A small crack in the windscreen can end up staying with you for tens of minutes across multiple different legs, and not seeing that rocky outcrop at the final few turns of a stage because of it, can be a stark realisation to your earlier consequences.

Needless to say, this isn’t exactly an arcade experience; if you’re after some leeway in the difficulty, sadly that’s down to just practice. It does however pay off when it all comes together. Once you get to grips with the handling and learn when to start pushing and pacing yourself, there’s nothing quite like the thrill of accomplishment. Knowing it’s all down to your own skill, as opposed to the threats of bullying AI rivals, just makes shaving off those precious seconds all the sweeter.

Whilst the excellent campaign mode will likely be your main time sink, there’s also the official FIA World Rallycross events to tempt you in too. Acting as the online portion of the game, it lets you take part in daily, weekly and monthly challenges against the community for some extra income (if you’re good enough that is…) Or, if you fancy a change of pace, there are also the multiplayer rallycross events for that bumper to bumper action. If somehow you’re still stuck for content, why not attempt the fabled hillclimb stages and join or create an online league whilst you’re at it?

RX_Peugeot_Hell_03_A [1099]
Is rallycross a non-contact sport?
It might not have the same initial visual wow as DriveClub, but it certainly holds its own. The cars and their damage modelling are undeniably the highlights, but the tracks are well detailed and possess more than enough draw distance to let you look ahead during a ‘calm’ moment. Most importantly however, is the framerate, it runs at a joyfully steady 60fps, which is more than you can say for a lot of recent games. It’s not only the visual smoothness that stands out either, engine noises are both prominent and thrilling, whilst different surfaces reacting to the contact of the tyres sounds realistic too. The audio balance is also great, crunching smashes and ambient weather effects never seem to drown out the (somehow) calming voice of your co-driver.

In short, Dirt Rally is difficult. It’s a simulator, not an arcade-style game, and it’s all the better for it. You likely won’t complete your first few races without a few crashes, and you almost certainly won’t even win your first rally stage, no matter what manner of assists you have on. The initial struggle is worth it however if you persevere and learn how to handle the cars properly. Constant risk/reward features in games are rarely as well implemented, tense and gratifying as they are here. There is simply no better authentic rally game than this right now.

New details on Star Fox Zero and Star Fox Guard for the Wii U

0

Nintendo reveals new details today about the next two games in its fan favourite Star Fox series: action shooter Star Fox Zero and companion strategy title Star Fox Guard, both launching in Europe on 22nd April exclusively for Wii U.

StarFoxZero

In the action-packed universe of Star Fox Zero, the TV displays a cinematic view from behind the Arwing while the Wii U GamePad puts players straight into the gunner’s seat, complete with immersive audio and intuitive motion controls for pinpoint aiming. A range of training missions help new recruits to master the game’s unique two-screen gameplay, and as their skills improve, players can return to these training missions to rack up better scores, then take what they’ve learned into the main game to discover new areas and beat their previous best performances.

As players progress through the game they’ll be able to return to earlier missions to find hidden collectibles and alternative routes that offer brand new challenges. For instance, the standard route through the bioweapon-filled planet Fortuna ends with a climactic battle against the imposing Monarch Dodora, but after clearing a certain story mission, confident pilots can return to Fortuna and choose to branch off in pursuit of Star Wolf instead. With multiple paths through the game bringing new challenges and surprises, there’s one to suit every skill level and play style.

Pilots up for an even fiercer challenge can tap in their Falco amiibo to unlock the Black Arwing, which has more powerful weapons but weaker defences, making it a potent but fragile weapon. Tapping the Fox amiibo unlocks a retro Arwing styled after the original Super NES Star Fox game, complete with retro music, to be used in the first Corneria stage.

Launching alongside Star Fox Zero is the companion game, which puts players in the ultimate security guard job – defending mining sites against waves of robot invaders. The TV screen displays a bank of 12 surveillance camera feeds, each monitoring a different part of the mining site, and it’s up to players to switch between cameras to spot enemies and blast them before they reach the central tower It’ll take supreme awareness and multi-tasking skills to fend off the relentless robot approach, so it helps to have friends on-hand to call out camera numbers that show approaching enemies. Help is also on hand via the Fox and Falco amiibo, which can each be tapped once per day to call in team Star Fox for a powerful air strike that destroys attacking robots.

WiiU_StarFoxGuard

Successfully clearing missions bestows rare metals, which count towards unlocking additional missions and cameras with special abilities, like slowing enemies down or freezing them in place, adding another layer of strategy to the action. My Squad mode also lets keen tacticians create and upload their own enemy attack patterns to challenge others around the world, or take on other players’ best efforts. Meanwhile, the Star Strategists feature is updated every day to offer a popular challenge from across the globe.

Star Fox Zero can get a taste of Star Fox Guard’s strategic action with an exclusive downloadable demo, only accessible though the main menu of Star Fox Zero. Save data can be carried over to the full version, so tacticians can pick up where they left off.

From 22nd April, Wii U owners can pick up Star Fox Zero, Star Fox Guard in a limited First Print edition including both games on separate Game Discs, and an exclusive SteelBook case. This package is the only way to get a physical copy of Star Fox Guard, so collectors won’t want to miss out. Star Fox Guard will also be available as a download code at retail. Meanwhile, those who purchase one title from Nintendo eShop can get a discount of £3.00 / €5.00 off the other, bringing the total price of both games to £49.98 / €59.98. Anyone who wants to get into training can pick up the Nintendo 64 game Star Fox 64, available now in Nintendo eShop for £4.49 / €4.99 (regular price £8.99 / €9.99) until 23:59 (local time) on 21st April.

Final Thoughts

If you have either an Apple Watch you will probably want a charging solution that is more than just plugging the cable into the side of your laptop and leaving it to charge.

This is where Just Mobile step in and have a number of solutions to help. This particular one is called the Lounge Dock.

The Lounge Dock doesn’t come with a charging cable, so you will need your original cable as well as the dock itself.

It comes in two pieces – a stand plate and the arm that you put the watch on. Putting it together was very simple, and fitting the cable into the arm was very easy too.

Placing the watch on the arm was a little more fiddly than I anticipated, it took me a few attempts to get the watch sitting correctly and not slipping down. This isn’t a fault with the Lounge Dock, but more to do with the type and size of strap on the Apple Watch. Once I figured out the right place to put the strap for my particular watch it worked great.

If you have a need for a charging dock, then take a look at the Lounge Dock from Just Mobile, you won’t be disappointed. They also have a HoverDock too.

DiRT Rally is out now for PS4,Xbox One and PC

0

Codemasters & Koch Media has today announced that DiRT Rally is now available to buy on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC(DVD).

From today, console players are welcomed into the vibrant DiRT Rally community and invited to join the hundreds of thousands of players on PC who road tested the game over 80 million miles during the game’s Steam Early Access programme. DiRT Rally is the most authentic and thrilling rally game ever made. It perfectly captures that white knuckle feeling of racing on the edge as you hurtle along dangerous roads at breakneck speed, knowing that one crash could irreparably harm your stage time.

DiRT RALLY® logo DK

Every stage tests you differently, as you race on the edge of control across snow, ice, tarmac and dirt and tackle a variety of weather types. As the car suffers attrition and stages string together, your dedicated rally team tries to keep you competitive and each rally becomes a marathon-like test of concentration and skill.

DiRT Rally includes officially licensed FIA World Rallycross content, allowing you to experience the breathless, high-speed thrills of some of the world’s fastest off-road cars as you trade paint with other drivers at some of the series’ best-loved circuits, in both singleplayer and high-intensity multiplayer races.

DiRT Rally also features online league support and daily, weekly and monthly challenges that allow players to test themselves against the best drivers in the world and claim bragging rights as well as in-game currency. From today, console and PC players will be able to enjoy substantial new additions to the game.

New Classic Mini and Super 1600 series will introduce the thrills of rallycross racing from the start of the game and 21 advanced rally driving video guides will help gamers maximise their rallying performance. Players will be able to drive the vintage full gravel surface at Pikes Peak for the first time in the game and three of Colin McRae’s most iconic liveries will enable them to relive the exploits of a legendary rally champion.

The DiRT team have also added seven extra cars to the game:

·        Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak
·        Renault 5 Turbo
·        Renault Alpine A110
·        Opel Corsa Super 1600
·        Peugeot  207 S1600
·        Renault Clio S1600
·        Mini Classic Rallycross

“We’re delighted to be able to welcome PS4 and Xbox One players to the DiRT Rally community” said Paul Coleman, Chief Games Designer “We’ve been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm for the game our fans have shown us ever since we first revealed it and today marks the realisation of our vision to bring the game to as many players as possible. Welcome on board and we hope you enjoy playing as much as we’ve enjoyed making it!” DiRT Rally is now available on Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC(DVD).

Available to buy now is the limited run DiRT Rally Legend Edition, which includes the full length feature documentary Colin McRae: Rally Legend. The film tells the full story of the rally icon that inspired the DiRT series from the man himself and charts his career from the earliest days, through to his domination of the rallying world and his involvement with the famous Codemasters games.

Also included in the console versions of the Legend Edition is the Fully Loaded MINI Pack, which unlocks and fully upgrades the MINI Cooper S from the start of the game, gives an exclusive livery for the car and provides a unique team mechanic with perks. In the UK, the Legend Edition also includes the Fully Loaded Ford Pack, featuring the Ford Escort Mk II, exclusively at GAME while a limited edition SteelBook complete with Driver’s Guide is available for gamers buying DiRT Rally at Sainsbury’s.

CDW Review One for All Wireless HDMI Sender - 7This is how One for All describes it:

CDW Review One for All Wireless HDMI Sender - 8

Final Thoughts

I was eager to test this set up having previously reviewed HDMI over Powerlines and been impressed. I have also seen other wireless senders that frankly don’t work very well and just aren’t worth bothering with, so with One for All offered me the chance to review this one I figured I would give it a go but I didn’t have very high expectations. And I was wrong!

Both the transmitter and the sender are very small and light, and even have their own stands to make sure they are safe and secure wherever you fit them.

Set up was simple – you just plug in the power and connect the devices via HDMI to the source and the TV you want to watch one. One thing to note, that you will need two HDMI cables as you don’t get any in the box. Not a huge issue but it would have been nice to have had everything you needed in one package rather than having to buy two extra cables.

Within a few moments the transmitter and the receiver will pair and that’s it – simple! I had perfect picture from both an SD and an HD source, and I was very happy!

One thing to note is that One for All say that transmitter and receiver need to be either within 30m line of site or with only one wall between them. When this is the case they work perfectly. The further away you have them though the more the picture will break up, so if you are not within those limits you might want to hold off from buying them. That’s not to say they won’t work, but you won’t get as good an experience. I tried two floors up and still got a fairly good picture but it was a little broken up (but like I said, its not designed to work in that situation).

Also, like any wireless signal, the environment can make a difference.

Overall, if you want to watch TV in another room of your home without the need for cables, and that room is within the parameters mentioned above, then you should really check this one out.

The One for All Wireless HDMI Sender is available now priced at £199.

Review: Atari Vault

Anybody ever heard of Atari games? Oh yes you have. Some of the very earliest legacy video games originated from this great company. Well Atari have released the Atari Vault, a massive collection of 100 classics from the 70’s and 80’s. It’s considerably easier to enjoy these retro classics from the comfort of your Steam library. Lets be honest that’s likely to be simpler and cheaper than getting an original Atari machine these days. And the resolution is definitely higher.

Cracking open the vault you will be met with a surprisingly modern interface with some fancy retro style graphics. You can flick through the original arcade machines and see the old game covers plastered on the sides of the machines. The modern resolution and updated visuals don’t let the retro theme go forgotten however. Brash colours and overstated UI elements are everywhere on the cluttered screen. Authentic to the last. Oh how user interfaces have progressed in 20 years.

One of my favourite inclusions is the gallery which contains all the box art and the arcade machines for you to check out. Flicking through there’s a lot of games I don’t know if I’m honest but when you stumble across one you recognize it’s all worth it. It’s definitely an education for any content that isn’t a nostalgic trip back in time.

The amount of content in the Vault is stunning. Even for the seasoned retro gamer there’s nothing missing. If you know Atari and arcade games they’re all here. The modern interface makes them all easy to search, browse and play. Value is definitely not a problem with the Vault.

Getting stuck into what is arguably Atari’s signature title, Asteroids, controls are simple to grasp and for the first time in who knows how long I was floating around enjoying Asteroids despite the colossal list of AAA titles sitting alongside the Vault in my Steam Library. Admittedly some of the fun comes from the memory of times gone by but these games are still pretty fun. There’s a reason why they’re still known 40 years or so later.

There’s even support for gamepads which brings the experience closer still to an arcade stick although there is just a little more finesse to the thumbsticks on a Dual Shock or a 360 pad. There’s even a useful band displayed at the bottom of the screen to remind you of the controls and help you out. It’s particularly useful given the non-native platform and controls. Plus the fact that it’s highly unlikely you’ve played the game anytime recently.

The Atari vault is an excellent way to remind yourself of how old you are. It’s far and away the best retro pack of games I’ve ever come across and represents amazing value. True enough there’s nothing new but the retro design and inclusion of a gallery of the game’s original covers and box art is a nice touch. Even if you’re only vaguely interested in original Atari titles the Vault is well worth buying. If you’re an old school gamer that knows even some of the games all the better. If you want a retro collection in your Steam Library this is it.

Final Thoughts

If you have either an Apple Watch or an iPhone (or both) you will probably want a charging solution that is more than just plugging the cable into the side of your laptop and leaving it to charge.

This is where Just Mobile step in and have a number of solutions to help. There are two different variations of the HoverDock, one for the Watch and one for the iPhone.

Both are small and light and can be easily transported if you want to take them with you, although I would imagine that most people will just leave them in one place and just pop their device on the dock whenever they want to charge it.

The HockDock doesn’t come with a charging cable, so you will need your original cable as well as the dock itself.

Putting the dock together is fairly straightforward, part of the design includes smart cable storage which just means you can wind up the cable with no effort at all.

Once you have the docks set up just the way you want them you will probably not want to remove the cable, so if you are needing to take a cable away with you somewhere and you don’t want to take the HoverDock as well, you might want to invest in another set of cables.

The HoverDock for the Apple Watch also enables you to use the Watch in Night Stand mode which is an added benefit.

If you have a need for a charging dock, then look no further than the HoverDock from Just Mobile, you won’t be disappointed.
