Dishonored 2’s latest gameplay trailer focuses on Corvo’s killing abilities

0

Today Bethesda Softworks has released a new gameplay trailer for Dishonored 2 that focuses on Corvo Attano.

The narrative-driven trailer allows us to watch as Corvo Attano enacts his vengeance on Delilah, the usurper who has seized the throne from his daughter, Empress Emily Kaldwin. We’ve seen many gameplay trailers which starred Emily, but this is one of the few times we’ve seen Corvo in action, reminding us that players will be able to choose from the two.

As you’d expect from a royal protector, Corvo can be downright brutal in his tactics, abilities, and attacks.

The gameplay trailer features a lot of combat, killing, and the use of several abilities that we’ll become more familiar with when Dishonored 2 releases in November.

Preview: Early Hands on with WWE2K17

0

2K UK kindly invited us along to the O2 on a grey Wednesday morning to have a cheeky early hands on with the gameplay of WWE2K17. This would be my first chance to try out the new refinements and gameplay for the next release in the WWE2K series.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuPXfP7kD_o&authuser=0

I do have to stress that the demo we were trying out was extremely limited to purely the gameplay side of WWE2K17. None of the actual modes were available and only a handful of WWE superstars were playable. But what was showcased really has me excited for this game more than ever with clever refinements made based on community feedback as well as 2K’s continued desire to make the best possible pro-wrestling video game there is.

The available players to try out were Alberto Del Rio, Dean Ambrose, Kevin Owens, Finn Balor, Seth Rollins and new to the roster current NxT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura and AJ Styles. The demo had three match types available, one vs one, Triple Threat and Fatal Four-way but the One Vs One included the new Backstage Brawl fight, a return from WWE games of the past and the Fatal Four-way was a ladder match but I will come to that a bit later.

So as I sat down at the PS4 demo pod, I opted for the simple One Vs One and created a personal dream match of AJ Styles vs Kevin Owens and sat back to take in their entrances which look even more impressive in WWE2K17 than ever before. There is a new lighting system which really enhances everything now about the entrances and action in and outside of the ring. Visually you can see that tweaks have been made from last year’s game engine with the wrestlers looking as close to life-like as you can in a video game. The detailing from their wrestling attire to body tattoo’s really was impressive.

Straight it was clear to me that extra work has been put into getting the animation of the superstars even more fine-tuned for this game as the grappling feels far more fluid and natural in how moves are triggered and executed. Trying to grapple your opponent definitely felt less cumbersome now as the control system has been improved so limb targeting is now on the right bumper and to activate the grabbing of an opponent to move them into a desired position such as a downed opponent is simply on the right trigger now. I really felt as though the feedback from last years control system has been taken on board for WWE2K17 and having a real level of extra control in and out of the ring allowed for better positioning for desired set piece move executions.

Countering has been vastly improved now, with the on-screen prompts now featuring a colour code to show how much time you have to counter a move and the animations of counters are a lot slicker this year. It still uses the stamina bar introduced in WWE2K16 which again can be turned off if the player prefers, but it still works well to help change the flow of a match and felt far less button mashing to try to trigger the counter each time R2 popped on-screen which again gave me the feeling of having more control over the action in the match.

The rather marmite submission mini game system introduced in WWE2K16 has returned but we were told by 2K staff that this can be turned off in the full released game which will no doubt please many fans myself included. Targeting the appropriate limb area that a submission hold would punish actually felt that it helped when the mini game began, so when I focused my attacks on the legs of Kevin Owen in order to use AJ Style’s Calf Crusher signature move but the AI was able to beat the mini game, but I am pleased to know this can be turned off in the final game.

Signature moves and Finishers can now special ringside versions of them helping to highlight the action which can so often move away from the ring itself and the animations were spot on for me. The ringside OMG moments are back and can be triggering by using a stored finisher at the right position. In WWE2k17 when you use the ringside OMG to break through the audience panels, you can now continue the fight amongst the fans instead of how in WWE2K16 once the OMG moment was done the wrestlers involved would simply be at ringside. Now that you can fight in the crowds, countout time limit permitting of course, it increases the size and feel of the action to not just being in the ring or doing some limited moves at ringside.

wwe2k17-bsb-1

The return of the backstage brawl is a welcome one to long-term fans of the WWE games series even before 2K took over from THQ in 2013. You can now fight in the back stage areas, brawling in the corridors or taking the action to the locker rooms or even the office of Triple H}{H or Stephanie MacMahon, which back in the day would have been Vince’s office. Objects can be used to beat down your opponent and a nice split screen will appear should you and your opponent become separated. I created a match up between Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins where I left Ambrose in a heap in the locker room after hitting him with a big screen TV, left him there as I made my way to the office of H}{H and with the split screen I could see Ambrose getting back to his feet and following me to the office where the action began again. This all gives WWE2K17’s matches the same TV broadcast feel of a show like RAW, the transition between the split screen to normal is seamless and keeps the action right on-screen where it needs to be. It is definitely a welcome return to have Backstage Brawling back this year.

wwe2k17-lm-1

The largest change I found to WWE2K17 was trying out the new overhauled Ladder match that was showcased in the Fatal Fourway match demo. As one of the most popular matches types in WWE, when it came to recreating it in past WWE games it often suffered as a result of the AI and control systems which could leave the match a little flat to play. But it was immediate to see just how much the feedback has inspired the updated version that will be in WWE2K17. It was a little chaotic having 3 AI controlled superstars to battle in this new look match, but I was glad to see that now whenever you are facing multiple superstars and are close together, the name of the closet opponent that you are targeting will now appear above your head, so when I as Kevin Owens was next to Ambrose and Rollins, the game told me be it was Ambrose I was targeting with any strikes and grapples allowing a much easier understanding of where my attacks were being aimed.

The effort into trying to recreate how a real WWE Ladder match feels has gone into the addition of new animations for when superstars are hit with a big move. If say you are on top of the ladder about to grab the briefcase for example, and you are grappled off the ladder and you land hard, you will have an animation showing the impact before your wrestler rolls out the ring to land on the floor where you will need to button mash in order to get back to your feet and rejoin the match. It is that little extra detail that fans will instantly recognize from the Ladder matches they see on WWE programming that enhances the recreation of such a match.

The main change however is the new mini game that has been added to when you reach for the prize at the top of the ladder now. In previous game versions all you had to do was to reach up, grab the prize and then pulled down on the right stick until you pulled the prize down, something that could allow the AI superstars to steal it from you in a very frustrating way. The new mini game now has a segmented wheel and as you pull at the prize, you will need to time it just right in order to hit each segment with a red ball between a gap in the segments. Ok now I know that sounds very complicated without being able to actually show it in action, but as a mini game it does add that extra challenge to get the case or belt from the top of the ladder. Sadly with the match being a Fatal four-way, there was simply too much going in the ring to really get to grips with this new mechanic in the short time we had with the demo. However the new feel to and approach to recreating this iconic WWE match feels more solid and a more faithful representation as to what fans would see for a ladder match in a WWE show.

This preview was a superb first look at the gameplay itself which to many fans of the WWE2K series is the main reason why they buy it every year. With the largest roster of Superstars, NxT talent and WWE Legends, WWE2K17 is looking just great ahead of its launch. The refinements to the grappling, move animations and countering systems all feel like natural improvements and in the little touches you can see around the return of the backstage brawling and in the new look Ladder match just how much effort has been put in to give fans a genuine WWE experience when playing WWE2K17 this year. From the amazing entrances to the action in and around the ring, I could really feel the improvements made from the subtle ones in the control systems to the visuals in the animation and character models of each wrestler.

2KSMKT_WWE2K17_Logo

With the promise that the refinements and improvements continue through the modes in the final game such as the creation suite and WWE Universe mode, WWE2K17 is on track to give a WWE fan experience with every single match.

A big thank you goes to 2K UK for the opportunity to try out WWE2K17 early. It releases for the first time globally on October 11th for Playstation 4 and Xbox One as well as legacy consoles Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

Review: Strike Vector EX PS4

When I first caught the trailer for Strike Vector EX for Playstation 4, I was immediately grabbed by its fast paced action set to a pounding hard rock soundtrack. It showcased fast aerial dog fighting in futuristic ships with battles in space to large constructs in the air. It was demonstrating all the aspects of classic arcade shooter action that I cherished in old school games such as Space Harrier and Ace Combat and it got my attention.

Originally released for PC back in 2014, Strike Vector EX has been brought across to the Playstation 4 with some new features and refinements including a brand new single player story campaign. Developed by the superbly named Ragequit Corporation, Strike Vector EX not only looks like a fun arcade title but it is also surprisingly low priced for a new release at pocket change level compared to other recent arcade title releases.

Starting off we have the new single player story campaign which is set over fifteen story missions and puts the player in the role of Marv who has dreams of becoming a Vector pilot to fight in the war between the Consortium and the Syndicate. When he comes of age he immediately signs up to for the consortium and begins his training as a pilot. All seems pretty straight forward when you start but very quickly the story starts to become an incoherent mess with some really terrible voice acting to the character of Marv and the side characters you fly with and do battle with. The last time I played such a rambling nonsensical story campaign was in Vanquish, but like Vanquish, the action and gameplay make up for the flaws in the storytelling and lines of dialogue. Without spoiling too much of the story, the number of times Marv switches allegiances is just staggering to follow his exploits that soon you will find yourself skipping the brief dialogue cut-scenes just to get to the action itself.

The Vector ships have two modes of flight, Standing and Fast. Fast will see the Vector in pure thrust mode using afterburners to speed around the battle area giving less maneuverability but greater speeds. Standing mode is the default mode for the Vector and enables it to hover in place allowing for more precise combat. Switching between the two is a matter of simply holding the left trigger on the controller and it can be exhilarating in Fast mode when zipping in and out of the different playing locations such as giant oil rigs in the sky. They are so cleverly designed that you can fight between structures or use them as cover when the action gets too hot. Health and attack cool down power ups can be collected simply by flying into them and they are healthily stocked on each mission.

The missions mainly come down to simply destroying all the enemy ships that are thrown at you, and different Vector ships and load-outs become available as the player progresses more and more in the story. You can choose your primary weapon and its perk, a special action which serves as a secondary weapon such as mines or defensive modes such an instant shield or Nanobots for self repairing. At first you are restricted to the standard generic load outs but soon you can begin to tailor your Vector load out to your own fighting style. Each mission is scored by how long it takes to complete it, with your overall time going on the global leaderboard as well as a nice comparison with anyone on your friends list who is also playing the game with some missions being longer than others but ultimately none of the story missions were longer than six minutes for me so the story campaign itself is rather short but it is still great fun and I did find the dialogue to be enjoyable despite its terrible delivery and throw away storytelling use.

strike-vector-ex-2

Outside the main story campaign the game has a Skirmish mode which is really just an offline training mode using the various battle arenas in the game to try out weapon load outs and flying skills. In this mode however the player can not earn any of the in game currency or gain XP from playing it and is purely single player, but with the main story offering pretty much the same experience but with the ability to earn Keb credits and XP, I fail to really see the point of this mode for the game.

It does have an online multiplayer as well, and this is where the customisation of your own Vector comes into play. The Multiplayer features six game modes ranging from your traditional deathmatch to capture the flag. Playing through these modes will allow the player to unlock new cosmetic items and weapons which can be purchased with the Kebs currency. The Vector can be tailored to have different cockpits, engine and wings which can change the look of the ship itself, you can even purchase decals to personalise the wings as an extra bonus. Weapon load outs can be customised as well to your preferred fighting style.

I did struggle to find matches with other human players, but the game will place AI Bot players if human players cannot be found, and though some can be ridiculously easy to defeat, some can prove to be a challenge but it was frustrating to play against bots the majority of the times I did take this game online. Which is a shame because Strike Vector EX has the potential to be an amazing fun experience online, I do wish that it had been included as part of September’s PS Plus free games because it could have launched with a large player base to suit the online potential of its multiplayer.

strike-vector-ex-3

It does have some issues however outside of the story campaign’s flaws. At times the background music can fail to start leaving an awkward silence after enjoying a power rock tune in the last mission. Sound effects can also fail to play correctly which can be annoying as the audible to let you know when to dodge an incoming missile is crucial when fighting multiple enemies so when it fails to activate you simply get blasted out of the sky.

I really enjoyed Strike Vector EX as an arcade title, the gameplay is fast and fluid and flying a Vector at full speed between the structures of a giant sky platform is amazing. The story campaign is weak on story and dialogue but for an arcade level title it provides enough action to make the investment in playing through it worthwhile and working to improve your own time is always a must for competitive players and I did enjoy comparing my time to those of my friends also playing it. For the price Strike Vector EX really is old school arcade action, it is just a real shame that the online element currently has such a low player base so fighting bots is less of a challenge although you can still unlock new items, gain rank XP and currency as well as Trophies for those who like to collect them.

This would have made a superb PS Plus title for September, just as Rocket League benefited from being included in it. There is enough solo content to make it a viable purchase but it can be so much more fun an experience if the player base was large enough to make the online multiplayer more credible.

Review: The Turing Test

Puzzles and sci-fi are two things surprisingly hard to get right in gaming in order to deliver a great and fun experience. Make the puzzles too hard and you risk preventing players progressing and leaving them frustrated or get the sci-fi story wrong and it can end up being a bland and lackluster experience that simply tries to copy what others have done before. Happily I can say that finally a game has managed to get both elements right and in a refreshingly new and impactful way that really impressed me with its delivery and gameplay.

The story puts the player in the role of Ava Turing, an engineer for ISA, the International Space Agency who is awoken from her cryo sleep aboard the a space station orbiting Jupiter by the station’s AI entity T.O.M. to investigate the loss of communication with the ground team based on Jupiter’s moon Europa. Upon reaching the base, T.O.M. explains that the base, built using modular construction, has been altered by the ground crew for an unknown reason. Moving through the base the Ava discovers that the sectors have been arranged into puzzle rooms that will require Ava to navigate and provide power to the only exit door to reach the next room.

Two things stand out immediately when you begin The Turing Test, the story and the puzzle rooms and manage to deliver an experience that provides high quality on both those elements. The puzzle rooms are intricately designed to provide a strong challenge in the later stages but never stray into the frustratingly impossible head scratches that would become off putting to carrying on. Ava is armed with an EMT, a tool capable of collecting energy orbs and transferring it to power nodes or devices required to solve the puzzle layout of each room. Whilst it does seem that the only goal of sourcing power to the exit door is a simple one, the complexity of the puzzle designs offer a rewarding challenge. What I found most satisfying was how the game both teaches the player and eases them into using new puzzle elements before testing how well the player is able to problem solve using the new techniques.

the-turing-test-3

Complimenting the actual gameplay is the story itself and how it is told via dialogue between Ava and T.O.M. as you explore each room. Through this dialogue exchange you begin to learn more about T.O.M. as an AI as he tries to explain his own actions and his inability to solve the puzzle rooms by himself as the designs were deliberate so only a human could solve them. Each of the seven chapters that make up the game features ten puzzle rooms and between each chapter the story unfolds more and more with interactive areas which through interactions add more pieces to the mystery of what happened to the ground crew. Each crew member’s story is expanded with each section as you learn their back-story from their personal effects and from audio logs which tell the events leading up to the moment Ava is woken to investigate.

The little details the player can discover by exploring the interactive areas add so much depth to an already strong sci-fi story and combines the gameplay to deliver a truly satisfying gaming experience. The musical score sits in the background and not only is it a beautiful piece of gaming music but it also serves to relax and helps focus the player even when the solution to a room can be agonizingly close. Having so many factors come together almost effortlessly makes The Turing Test one of the stand out games of this year for me. Completing each chapter left me eager to tackle the next and the further I progressed only opened up more intriguing secrets and layers to the story.

The only issues I found with the game were the constant loading screens between the rooms which broke up the flow a little too much after the a long loading bar at the start of each chapter, and that when using subtitles the audio logs themselves did not have any whilst the dialogue between Ava and T.O.M. did. For accessibility reasons this was a real shame as the audio logs add so much to the story so if you needed subtitles you sadly missed out on quite a bit of extra story telling.

the-turing-test-2

Overall The Turing Test is one of the most enjoyable games of 2016 for me; it delivers great gameplay in the puzzle rooms and has a tremendous story. The voice acting for Ava and T.O.M. bring so much life to both characters as their conversations expand the different themes that the actual Turing Test, developed by Alan Turing in 1950 to see if a computer can fool a human being into believing that it too was human, raise about the future of AI. As a Sci-fi nerd and a technology fan, The Turing Test successfully ticks so many boxes and does so whilst providing a truly great single player experience.

This is definitely worthy of being added to your collection if you are a fan of cleverly designed puzzle games and for a great story told in a refreshing style.

Review: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

It’s been 5 years since Square Enix brought the Deus Ex franchise back from the dead. The success of Deus Ex: Human Revolution made it possible for the publisher to release the sequel, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

A Tom Hanks Retrospective

With two Academy Awards, a filmography that has grossed over 8.5 billion dollars, and arguably one of the most loveable faces on the faces of the planet, Tom Hanks has certainly had a career that most actors would give arm for.  His latest film A Hologram For the King, is an inspirational story of a man struggling to turn his life around in a foreign land, based on Dave Eggers novel of the same name.  Available on digital platforms on 12th September and on Blu-ray and DVD from 19th September, 2016, A Hologram For The King features a Tom Hanks performance that audiences have come to treasure from his catalogue of classic films over the years. In order to truly appreciate the man himself, we’re taking a look back at some of his most iconic roles, and be assured that narrowing it down to this list was no easy task.

A Hologram For The King (2016)

In many of the films of this list, Hanks serves as a leader and authoritarian, but in A Hologram For The King he plays a man struggling to find his purpose in the world, lost both figuratively and physically in the foreign land of Saudi Arabia. Alan Clay (Hanks) hopes to sell a state-of-the-art 3D holographic meeting system to the nation’s King. But once he begins work he quickly learns that he will have to adapt to a different culture and way of doing business in order to be successful. After suffering a panic attack in his hotel room, Alan meets a beautiful Saudi Doctor whose presence has a profound effect, leading him to question the path his life has taken. Hanks’ signature charm and depth guides us on an inspirational journey of self discovery, leading to the conclusion that there really is nothing this man can’t do.

Big (1988)

Before the days of the multiple prestigious awards coming out of his ears, Mr. Hanks was making hearts around the world melt as a child who was magically turned into a grown man overnight. Still living with 13-year-old’s mentality, Josh (Hanks) decides to hide out in New York City until he can figure out what to do next. He lucks into a job with a major toy company run by kid-at-heart McMillan (Robert Loggia) and falls in love with fellow employee Susan (Elizabeth Perkins). But still a kid, he becomes desperate to go back to being scruffy teenager. Hanks brought his trademark wit and playfulness to the film, and it’s hard to imagine anyone else being able to play a giant keyboard with his feet as well as he does.

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Steven Spielberg’s legendary WWII epic may be known primarily for its extremely intense and disturbing 24-minute long battle sequence on the beaches of Normandy, but at the films heart is a very grounded and relatable performance from Mr. Hanks. The film follows a group of soldiers led by Captain Miller (Hanks), who have been charged with the task of saving a young soldier fighting in France by the name of (you guessed it) Private Ryan, whose three brothers have been killed in battle, and bring him home to his family. The film won five  Oscars in total but what was most notable about the ceremony was that it missed out on ‘Best Picture’ to Shakespeare In Love, which is still remembered as one of the biggest Oscar upsets in history. The film has proven to stand the test of time though, with Hank’s performance being one of the best of his career.

Toy Story (1995), Toy Story 2 (1999) and Toy Story 3 (2010)

After all of Pixar’s success, awards and rave reviews for their many delightful films, the standard set by incredible moving and nostalgic Toy Story series still sets the bar. Hanks voices the charming cowboy doll Woody, who is seen as a leader of sorts for a group of toys who come to life when no one is looking. But when their owner Andy get’s a new action figure for his birthday in the shape of Buzz Lightyear, he starts to lose his place as the ‘favourite toy’. It’s hard to imagine that Toy Story was so innovative in its field when it was released in 1995, but with every summer holiday now coming with a flurry of animated films, Hanks and co. paved the way for many childhoods of the future. As much as we’re assured otherwise, we still can’t completely trust that Action Men and Barbies don’t come to life when we leave the room…

Forest Gump (1994)

They say a career is never complete without a role that encourages millions of people around the world to impersonate nearly every line from the film in a ridiculous voice. If that’s true then Hanks has managed to complete that task with the title role in Robert Zemeckis’s film Forest Gump. The films follows Gump, a special child not quite like everyone else, from a young age right through to becoming a father, as he finds himself in many troubling and often enlightening times through 1960’s America, with the film acting as a strong critique of US History. Hanks gives a heart breaking performance that ended up winning him an Oscar, showing the importance of some much needed innocence in the world during a time of so much chaos and darkness.

Captain Philips (2013)

With Paul Greengrass’s high-seas thriller Captain Phillips, the film needed a hero that instead of being muscle-bound and born with superpowers, was above all else brave and relatable, and Hanks fits that bill perfectly. Based on the true story of the 2009 hijacking of U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates, the film not only works as an gripping and tense modern day action-thriller, but also successfully attempts to dissect deeper themes of poverty and globalisation. The film is worth watching for the truly heartbreaking final scene that is enough to make even the most stubborn Somali pirate break down into floods of tears.

Cast Away (2000)

This intense drama about one man’s struggles to survive after being shipwrecked on a desert island can be summed up in one word: WILSON! Hanks manages to keep our full attention in a film that features only him for 90% of the film, along with a brilliantly understated performance from his volley ball friend. Of all the films Hanks has done in his career this is probably the most intense of them all, showing incredible determination to save himself from the island and get back home. In Cast Away, Hanks made us laugh, cry and learn how to appreciate the modern day dentist, a magnificently rounded performance.
