Review: Life is Strange – Before the Storm Ep 1

Life is Strange was a very special game for many reasons for many people, myself included. The story was powerful and captivating with a new refreshing take on player choice in gaming which Telltale Games has dominated for so long. From the soundtrack to the characters and emotive story moments, Life is Strange landed with a huge impact and huge praise on its release. But when the follow up was announced and revealed to be a prequel story focusing on Chloe, months before Max returns in Life is Strange, I had my concerns and doubts going into it and will say it was quite a mixed experience for me.

So let me start by talking about the elephant in the room when it comes to Before the Storm, this prequel was not made by the original developers of Life is Strange DONTNOD Entertainment. Instead Deck Nine were tasked with creating this prequel and further more the original voice actor for Chloe Price, Ashley Burch, was unable to return for this sequel due to the SAG-AFTRA strike so replaced by Rhianna DeVires who originally did the motion capture for the character. Great efforts where made before release to explain to fans that Ashley was heavily involved as the writing consultant. So even before pressing the start button, I was a little nervous about these aspects alone.

Before the Storm is set three years before the events of the first game and focuses on Chloe Price as she is dealing with life following the death of her father and the departure of Max who has left Acardia Bay. As we know how Chloe will be by the time Max returns in the first game, Before the Storm is a story that focuses on Chloe who is dealing with a lot of personal torment which will shape her as the character we will meet later. The story will explore Chloe’s past whilst player choice will help shape her character and story and will have multiple endings based on the choices players make throughout this three episode mini series.

Much like the first game, Episode 1 gives us a good insight into where Chloe is right now in her life by showing us her home and school life as the rebellious character will know she will become, begins to take shape. We begin by joining Chloe as she attempts to gain entry to the Old Mill to watch a live performance by FireWalk This opening gives us a really good look into Chloe as she is right now, a 16 year old teenage girl struggling to find her identity and place in a world where she has already suffered tremendous loss. We also get our first real taste of how feisty Chloe can be, often acting first without thinking about the possible consequences which is shown by her interactions with the bouncer who dismisses her and her fake ID. Chloe will not take no for an answer and here we are introduced to the biggest difference between both Life is Strange games.

One of the core aspects of the first game was Max’s supernatural ability to rewind time, a game mechanic that enabled the player to change events and to change decisions at key moments if they were unsure about the resulting outcome. But Chloe does not have this ability and instead is giving the superpower of “Teenage backtalk”. Yup, Chloe has the ability to backtalk people in dialogue scenes just to show how teenager this teenage Chloe can be. This probably sounds rather lame and in all honesty, for me it really was. The idea is that Chloe can pick out key words in dialogue spoken to her and then use that key word to reply with a suitable backchat response, normally a weighted insult. Make the right choice and Chloe will successfully turn the momentum in her favour which often means forcing the other person to back down. Should the player have explored the area around before the dialogue starts, it may offer additional responses such as here in this tutorial exchange, which if the Player has looked at the bike parked next to the Old Mill entrance to see it has been decorated in flowers, it will give Chloe the option of mocking the bouncer for having “flowers on his bicycle” to help score final backtalk victory. Backtalk is often triggered when Chloe is talking to people she generally doesn’t like. It does work but for me the dialogue at times can be really cheesy and just lacks the same punch that Max’s time manipulation power had.

Familiar faces from the first game also play role in this prequel story such as Chloe’s Mum who is in the early stages of dating David, the soon to be stepfather to Chloe who right now is just beginning to make his presence felt in the house. We can see how she is noticing things such as her mum removing old family photographs that featured her father, building the animosity held for David whilst at the same time showing that Chloe is still very much grieving over the loss of her Dad. Seeing characters such as Nathan Prescott, Frank the drug dealer and friends from school Eliot, Mikey and Steph are great nods for those who played the first game and is actually a nice element to this prequel. But there is one character that players will no doubt be excited to finally meet, Rachel Amber.

This mysterious girl who played such a vital part of the original game leading to Max and Chloe investigating her disappearance is now a big part of the prequel as the relationship between Chloe and Rachel begins and begins fast. From suddenly going from a place where they are aware of each other at school to suddenly forming a very quick bond at the Firewalk concert does feel a little rushed but that is teenage love in a nutshell. Rachel is someone new for Chloe and someone who seems to genuinely have an interest in her whilst bringing smiles in an otherwise tortured existence for Chloe is very evident even before the main section of this episode kicks in which sees Rachel ask Chloe to ditch school which Chloe needs little persuasion in doing as school is not really a priority for her right now.

To learn more about Rachel as a person and to fully appreciate how the relationship we came to understand her and Chloe had in the events of the first game allows the player to better understand both and especially Chloe. Both have their issues right now and both are angry at the world and looking to escape their misery and being together helps them do this to a degree from what we see in this opening episode. Player choice can shape how this relationship starts by letting the player have Chloe be more flirty with Rachel or simply friendly to her in dialogue responses and players will get the sense that Chloe is certainly more herself when around Rachel then just by herself. The start of a very complicated but special relationship has started and that alone is enough for me to invest more time into this prequel.

But this game does have some issues for me and ones that prevent me having the same level of immersion which I enjoyed in the first game. There is a real overuse of lingering moments, where the game holds on to a moment, pans the camera around and plays an indy music track hoping to generate an emotional response in the player. Sometimes it works, but other times it really just feels like filler to pad out the run time of this episode. It is obvious that Deck Nine are trying to use mechanics that allowed the first game to connect with the player again, but it often fails. I have said that dialogue can be really cheesy and it can also just go on for far too long which made me just mash the skip button to get the conversation over and done with. Then there are the collectible moments which in the first game were photograph opportunities for Max has now become a game of finding a spot for Chloe to whip out a Sharpee pen and do some graffiti. It just lays on the whole element of Chloe rebelling and lashing out a tad too thick to have her just putting graffiti in random places. At two and a half hours, three if you go to find all the graffiti spots, this opening episode to Before the Storm does pack in a lot for players to do but the filler aspect made some parts drag a little too much for me.

So far there is more to like then to dislike with Before the Storm though I was less buzzed about opening episode then I was with the original Life is Strange game’s opening. In discovering more about Chloe as a person I found myself thinking of her character differently after the events of the first game. I enjoyed how her journal is more about Chloe talking to Max in diary form, almost as though at the end of each day Chloe is emailing Max to tell her about her day despite Max never replying to symbolize the abandonment issues Chloe is feeling towards Max. I am finding the growing relationship between her and Rachel to be compelling and on a personal level I can connect with Chloe as a character as she continues to deal with the loss of her father. There is certainly enough here for fans of the original to sink their teeth into but I do hope the dialogue does improve and the need to rehash gameplay mechanics from the original to illicit an emotional response becomes less forced going forward.

I had my concerns going into this prequel and some sadly were justified. But having played this opening episode I am intrigued enough to want to see it play out and to shape that story around the choices I make. One episode down and two more to go and by already knowing where the road will take this characters in the long run thanks to Life is Strange, I am more than happy to join Chloe on her journey Before The Storm lands.

Review: Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

It’s almost ironic that Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle only exists because of time travelling misadventures, since anyone living in the past would laugh in Nintendo’s face if a company representative travelled back in time, to let people know it was letting Ubisoft run wild with its sacred Mario franchise. Not only that, but the very thought of a team up between the Mushroom Kingdom crowd and Rabbids just seems like a recipe for trouble. But is that the case or was it wise of Nintendo to throw Mario and co in the deep end with a group of deranged beings?

JUST DANCE 2018 Reveals the new kids mode and a new Disney Song

0

Ubisoft has today reveals details on the new Kids’ Mode for Just Dance 2018, the latest installment of the music game franchise. With this brand new mode, Just Dance 2018 offers parents an opportunity to let their young children play in a kid-friendly environment. Thanks to a tailored interface, scoring, choreographies and special characters, kids will be able to enjoy the game in complete autonomy, with positive and supportive feedback.

Just Dance has always been a family favourite. With Just Dance 2018, Ubisoft have created a dedicated mode for the youngest to play in collaboration with the help of two child development experts: Martine Curtat-Cadet, childrens’ choreography expert, and Cristina Do Carmo De Sousa Gomes, childrens’ concept artist. Kids’ Mode has been developed to be beneficial for kids’ motor development, with a design completely adapted to this specific audience.

As Curtat-Cadet explains: “Children aged between three and six quite often have difficulties reproducing fast and complex movements. The steps we have developed in these choreographies are associated with intentions that correspond to action verbs like running, climbing, flying, catching. Inevitably the child will learn and will integrate the choreographies naturally and not by imitation. Additionally, dancing really helps children to acquire scholarly skills like writing, reading and art as well.”

As a result, eight songs have been choreographed for kids to encourage healthy movement. The choreographies are much easier than the traditional Just Dance songs and children can really identify with characters and universes, such as embodying a fearless pirate on the deck of a ship; a supergirl off to save the world; a funky robot; a magical Halloween experience, and lots more.

The game’s interface, in this mode, has also been simplified with less text and a continuous and random play mode that parents can decide to activate. The scoring system was adapted too, in order to make it more generous and positive, for children to feel encouraged as they dance.

Finally, for young and old alike, Just Dance 2018’s main mode will include “How Far I’ll Go” from Disney’s hit animated fantasy-adventure feature Moana , produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Just Dance 2018 will be available on all motion-control gaming platforms, including Nintendo Switch, Wii U, Wii, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3 on October 26th, 2017.

Review: Absolver

Throughout my gaming life I have always been drawn to the fighting genre by default, a result of spending way too much of my schooldays and pocket money on the nearest Street Fighter II and Wrestlefest arcade machines. From Mortal Kombat to Tekken, Final Fight to Streets of Rage, fighting games have a permanent place in my heart. So when something new arrives with the potential to freshen up the genre it will have my attention. Absolver grabbed my attention from its first trailer, and happily the game itself is something very special indeed.

Absolver is certainly something very new and takes a genre I love and know well and gives it a twist many players will not see coming at first. The game is an online shared experience title where the player creates their ‘Prospect’ and is sent into the world in order to survive and learn new fighting styles on their journey to become the coveted Absolver. The character creation suite is very basic with only the options to pick a gender, hair style and hair colour. The reason for this is that all prospects have a mask that covers their face and upon being selected to be the next Prospect, it is seemingly infused with a fighting spirit that will enable the player to start learning new moves and interact with the various fighting schools located around the world.

Each Prospect enters the world with only the basic of fighting moves. As you move around the world, you will meet other prospects, both AI controlled bots and other human players but will come to that side a bit further on. By fighting the player has the opportunity to learn new moves by both guarding and blocking attacks or by dodging or using their fighting style ability. When enemies use attack moves that the player does not know, they will begin to learn these moves the more they are attacked with them. By either keeping that fight going or by repeated encounters with others using those moves against you, the player will fully learn that move and have the ability to add that move to their combat deck. If you should fall in the encounter, anything learned about that move or others will be lost, winning the fight will lock any progression on that move.

The combat deck is the real core strength to Absolver. The real goal to the game is to build and develop the combat deck of your fighter, which is where the learning of new moves comes into play. By entering meditation, players can start to edit their combat deck and change the moves to form new a new combat sequence. There are four stances in top left, top right, bottom left and bottom right. Each move starts in one stance and ends in another allowing for the next move to start and so on. From basic punches and kicks to sweeps and roundhouses to heavy hitting flamboyant attacks, how you build your deck to take not only the increasing difficulty in AI fighters as you explore and rise in level and skill, but also against other players also doing the same as you, creating a powerful deck of moves.

Why this system works so well for me, is that players can really tailor their decks to have a variety of combat styles to what they want. By understanding how moves start and end in different stances allows for a deceptively deep but rich character development. Players are encouraged to go out into the world and battle each and everyone they meet to help build their decks and make a stronger fighter. Tackling higher skilled enemies will help discover and learn new and stronger moves. But players need that understanding of how to build a strong deck, to learn what moves compliment others and how to put them together to enable a strong fighting deck capable of competing against both AI and human players. That will take time as learning new moves and particularly those moves that can pave the way to success.

Which brings me to the shared experience element of the game as Absolver is a fully online game. Though players can freely explore the world which has its own story side to it the more you get into the world, sharing this with other players is an interesting blend of both PvP (players vs player) and PvE (players vs environment) gameplay styles. In this world other human players are introduced into your world as you play and explore and what is interesting, is that it does not always end up in being a fight. Players can choose if they wish, to either engage in battle, to ignore each other or can request to form a partnership and explore the world in a co-op way. Up to three players can link to work together, which allows them to start learning moves from each other and of those they fight. When I first started the game on PS4, the majority of other players I met were friendly with plenty of them using the emote system to show respect by bowing or even just helping out if an encounter with AI bots proved overwhelming.

But soon I began to encounter some high lever players who would position themselves in areas where lower levelled players would naturally come to and simply attack them, overwhelming them with their stronger combat decks even if that other player had neither initiated the fight or showed a lack of interest by moving away or using the emotes to show they did not want to fight. This can really be annoying and though it is not strictly against the spirit of the game, it is a little cheap and can be very frustrating at times. But happily I can say that these instances are few and far between but highly noticeable when they do happen.

Other annoyances for me happen when the game detects that a new human player has joined the world as the world will visibly stutter for a few seconds if one or more new players venture into the area around you, but hopefully future updates can address that. My biggest issue with the game currently are AI bots. When you move around an area you will see certain spaces where AI bots will always be, handy if you want to farm new moves. AI bots can be on their own, with a friend or at worst you can encounter up to three or four AI bots at a time who will instantly fight you the moment you engage them. This can often lead to fun fights but on occasion and something I noticed quite often, they will often break away from the fight if you have moved it away from where they started. They will stop the fight and run back to that area, forgetting you unless you follow them and the fight can carry on. Also at times I noticed some AI will literally disappear during the fight only to respawn will full health and start the fight again, which is very frustrating and hopefully will be fixed in an update.

Absolver is a genuine fresh take on the fighting genre. It is visually stunning with its water paint art style and carefully detailed animation depending on which fighting style you choose to adopt of each move. The world is vibrate and the online servers are very stable and as yet I have not suffered from any disconnections from them. I would not say that Absolver is a pick up and play title unless you are familiar with fighting games and have the patience to work on building the combat deck and then to learn how that deck can be forged to create a good fighter which can take time. This game will require patience and time to really delve inside it but it is worth it. This is certainly one of those special titles that deserve attention and if like me, you are a fan of fighting games, Absolver takes it to a new level but it is a niche game.

This is a visually beautiful game and one with perhaps the deepest most immersive fighting systems this genre has seen that the developer SloClap is to be commended for its ambition. The niggles I mentioned can be worked out and with the option of having more than one fighter to work on and the fighting school system for high level players means there is always a reason to return to this world and always something new to learn and master.

Top chefs at Kanada-Ya HQ have created a limited-edition ramen dish in homage to the upcoming launch of anticipated videogame, Destiny 2. To celebrate this hotly anticipated release, Kanada-Ya will be exclusively serving the Destiny 2 Ramen from their Piccadilly restaurant from 4 – 17 September. The dish will be on the menu during these dates for £17.

In Destiny, fan-favourite, Cayde-6 has a penchant for Ramen and is often heard discussing his favourite food from the ‘Spicy Ramen’ store. As a result, Kanada-Ya created the bespoke Destiny 2 Ramen dish consisting of Niboshi dashi, hand pulled noodles, chashu pork belly, chilli prawn, red oil, bamboo shoots and shredded leek for gamers and Kanada-Ya fans alike to enjoy. What’s more, there’s also a custom-made ‘Spicy Ramen’ neon sign in store with plenty of selfie opportunities to be had.

Destiny 2 is the sequel to the internationally acclaimed Destiny, a first-person action game that takes the player on an epic journey to defend humanity from annihilation. In the story of Destiny 2, the last safe city on Earth has fallen and lay in ruins, occupied by a powerful new enemy Dominus Ghaul and his elite army, the Red Legion. Every player creates their own character called a ‘Guardian,’ humanity’s chosen protectors. As a Guardian in Destiny 2, players must master new abilities and weapons to reunite the city’s forces, stand together and fight back to reclaim their home. Destiny 2 will offer a fresh start to all players with no previous knowledge or background needed.

Gamer or not, this limited-edition Destiny 2 ramen meal is one not to be missed. Destiny 2 launches on September 6, 2017, where it will be available to buy on PlayStation®4, and Xbox One.  The PC version launch date is scheduled for October 24th.
