Review: Doctor Who Series 11 Episode 1 – The Woman Who Fell to Earth

The wait is finally over and Doctor Who will never been the same again and not just because The Doctor has changed gender. The anticipation for a new Doctor series is always heightened when a new Doctor is about to take centre stage but when we also hav a new show runner in Chris Chibnall who takes over from Steven Moffat there is even more nervous excitement for the start of a new series. Honestly I do have some concerns going into this series but not about the fact that The Doctor is now a woman or that she is being played by Jodie Whittaker. But now Series 11 Episode One is here, and as The Woman Who Fell to Earth has finally been shown…it is time to “Get a shift on”!

*Quick note that this is a spoiler free review so I will be refraining from going into too much detail about the story other then what has been shown in trailers.*

The first thing that I immediately felt from the opening ten minutes alone was a completely different tone from previous series, which is really just what I wanted to feel with a new show runner at the helm though it was a rather brave way to open the first episode for a new Doctor by not actually starting off with …The Doctor. Instead we are introduced to the new and soon to be companions. By making the audience wait for the entrance of the Doctor gave it far more weight than simply going straight to seeing what happened after she had fallen from the TARDIS. It also did a second brand new thing by not actually having any title sequence, instead the audience is put right into the story and not taken out of it until the end credits to the episode. It was different but ultimately I found that it actually worked really well, in just fifteen minutes of this episode it had already done something refreshing and new and very unlike any previous series since the show was rebooted back in 2005.

I did enjoy getting to see the new companions in their own day to day lives and the subtle set up for just how much their eyes will be opened to the whole universe and world of The Doctor. Out of the three I did like the character of Ryan Sinclair the most, played by Tosin Cole, he is the first face we see and more time is spent with him compared to the others which for me works really well. Ryan is 19 and suffers from Dyspraxia which affects his physical coordination, as seen by him still trying to learn to ride a bike at 19 which leads to the moment that changes everything for everyone. My main fear with this season was and still remains after this episode that three companions is a little too much for a new Doctor to stand out properly but each will being their own unique personality to the mix I am sure. Ryan is dealing with a lot when the Doctor finds him, Yasmin played by Mandip Gill is a school friend of Ryan and as a probationary Police Officer is wanting to have more responsibility and bigger challenges in life. Graham played by Bradley Walsh is the only problem I can see with Graham being cancer survivor and currently in remission and also step dad to Ryan, is played very sombre by Walsh and is someone who believes his time has already been and gone and is feeling guilty about being a survivor. Each has something that the Doctor can help them work on to find their true courage but it just feels like overkill having so many people around her as she just starts off, I felt the same way about Matt Smith’s Doctor when Rory joined him and Amy back in the day.

The story itself was quite by the numbers in terms of how the first episode for a new Doctor goes with the standard Doctor not remembering everything and still needing time to allow the regeneration to complete. It did feel strange to have some of the characters still dismissing aliens as not real considering how many times the Earth has been attacked by Daleks and Cybermen for example but the Doctor wins them over as she always does. It was fun to get a glimpse into the world of new monsters that Chris Chibnall has confirmed he is bringing to this series and that the old faithful will not be making an appearance this season. New is good and for a new show runner it is not a bad idea to make your mark by bringing something new to the world of Doctor Who but what I really appreciated was the little touches that felt so familiar but will come to that a bit later. The pacing was solid and the story flowed nicely from start to finish which is key in an opening episode.

As for Jodie Whittaker’s take on the Doctor, well it is too early to say just yet but from what was shown in this episode there is certainly tremendous potential to revitalise the character as each new Doctor should. After Capaldi’s “older Doctor”, the 13th Doctor is full of positive energy and finds everything interesting but Jodie does a very clever thing in that the old Doctor’s attitude to protecting humanity and life itself still shines through at key moments of the story and still above all else uses brains over brawn. I really liked Jodie as the Doctor and she literally hit the ground running if you pardon the pun considering the episode title. If you watch the episode again make sure you listen very closely to the music as the Doctor first takes charge it will give you goosebumps. I have zero trouble seeing Jodie running with this role for years to come and will be intriguing to see how her Doctor develops as the episodes go on. The elephant in the room of the Doctor now being a woman was sensibly only commented on twice, which made it less of a big deal for the audience as well as the Doctor.

There is a fresh feel to this series already and it came across as though it is bring treated more like a BBC Drama series then that of a kids show, something that Steven Moffat failed to do in his final series for Capaldi. The special effects are very much improved with real effort in the CGI work showing that the BBC have clearly provided a bigger budget for this new series for Chris Chibnall which is a relief because I had a real fear that the BBC were about to give up on this series as it has done in the past. Now this could all be a massive last gasp effort to get the show popular again with it suffering from low ratings in recent years and the move to a Sunday evening sounded strange but honestly it is a genius move that will make this a must see programme for fans which will be most effective as the lead in to the Strictly results show.

The Woman who fell to Earth was a brilliant start to the new series and the reaction to it across social media including reviews have all been highly positive with much praise for Jodie and the new cast which I fully agree they deserve along with the writing and new tone set by Chris Chibnall. The next episode ‘The Ghost Monument’ looks to be the standard “take the humans into space” for an adventure type episode and then I do hope we get to see them actually travel in time for the third episode. But everything is looking good and I have far more confidence looking forward than I had before watching this episode.

We have a new Doctor, we have a new show runner and we have a new series and so far it is all working fantastically and I do hope this quality is maintained going forward. As a lifelong Whovian who has seen every Doctor and series, this is the first time since the rebooted series in 2005 that I am excited to see what happens next with the Doctor with the promise of new aliens, monsters, planets and events in time to look at just opening my eyes to just how much potential is there for the show.

As always following spending time with the Doctor, I am left feeling very optimistic about the journey ahead for Jodie’s era of Doctor Who.

First DLC for Shadow of the Tomb Raider called “The Forge”

Square Enix, Eidos-Montréal, and Crystal Dynamics are proud to announce the first of seven new DLC adventures for Shadow of the Tomb Raider called “The Forge.”

Available as a free download to all Season Pass holders, and sold separately, “The Forge” will launch worldwide on November 13th for the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4 and Windows PC/Steam.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey out now for PS4/Xbox One and PC

Ubisoft announced that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is now available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC.

In addition, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has been enhanced with additional features for both PS4 Pro and Xbox One X platforms.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is set in Ancient Greece during the Golden Age of Athens amidst one of the deadliest conflicts in history, the Peloponnesian War. Playing as either Alexios or Kassandra, an outcast Spartan mercenary, players will embark on an epic journey into a living, systemic open world, where they will uncover the truth about their mysterious pasts and become legendary Greek heroes.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise into an open-world RPG where players’ choices and decisions allow them to live their own unique experience. An all-new interactive dialogue system offers more freedom for players to choose from an array of role-play options that impact each adventure differently while unfolding an intense story full of unique characters and meaningful objectives. Players will loot, level up and upgrade their weapons, gear and abilities as they charge into massive battles between Sparta and Athens. The return of open world naval combat allows players to explore the open seas, discover uncharted locations, customise their battleships and recruit their own crew members with unique perks. Review: Venom

I write this as someone who actually quite enjoyed Sony Picture’s Amazing Spider-Man films with Andy Garfield, so much that I was genuinely surprised and disappointed by the backlash it received that led to Sony ending their plan for the Spiderverse and doing a deal with Disney/MARVEL to loan Spider-Man to the MCU. One of the reasons for my disappointment was that Sony had planned the Amazing Spider-Man to be an actual trilogy with a spin off Sinister Six film to set up the final and ending chapter Spidey film. Rumours of a Venom standalone film were also running around at the time, but my concerns were raised when indeed this film was confirmed for after Spider-Man joined the MCU making it a real standalone Venom film which would not feature anything Spider-Man related at all. Still at least Sony cast Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock so there was some hope at least.

I am going to start by saying I really liked Venom whilst it is not a great superhero film, it is certainly a fun film to watch and very surprising at what it does well but not so surprising at the parts that are not so well done. The biggest and best aspect to Venom is Tom Hardy and his performance as both Eddie Brock and Venom, he simply gives so much of himself into these roles in every scene that it holds the rest of the film together so brilliantly. As someone who knows the Spider-Verse well from comic books and animation, I was intrigued to see what kind of Eddie Brock we would get in Venom but pleased to say that this version, which is very different from the one fans may visualize in their heads, works on so many levels that stop Venom from being the terrible film many may have already judged it to be.

This version of Eddie Brock still has him as a journalist but now he is a rebellious does what ever it takes to get the truth rather than the Eddie Brock would do whatever it took just to get the story. Having his own internet news report show keeps the character fresh and current but there are some lovely little story details as well to set up Eddie in this film which I really appreciated. We learn that he was a reporter based in New York for the Daily Globe newspaper but events lead to him leaving that city and coming to San Francisco where he meets and becomes engaged to Anne Weying, played by Michelle Williams, who is an attorney at a high profile law firm The first third of the film is essentially setting up Eddie’s rather happy life in with everything going so well until he is given the job of interviewing self-made billionaire Carlton Drake about his LIFE Foundation which he is forced to do by his boss. A bad judgement call ultimately leads to Eddie going to far in his questioning which costs him his job and his happy life and him spiralling to rock bottom.

Exposition is a real issue in Venom and whilst it does not quite kill the pace, it is rather used far too clumsily when offering a convenient plot explanation for events to keep the audience in the know of what is happening. For example, Anne just happens to work for a law firm which represents the LIFE Foundation and Drake and she just casually leaves her laptop switched on at home to receive a very confidential email which Eddie then stupidly reads which prompts him to ask the questions which lead to him losing his job as well as having Anne leave him. The way in which Drake is set up as the big bad is also very clumsy as his unlimited wealth has him launching his own private NASA operations in space which leads to the discovery of a comet which has a bunch of Symbiotes which he then brings to earth in order to conduct scientific research. His whole aim is to create a way for humanity to live in space as he believes that resources on Earth will be used up in the next generation so aims to be the first to establish mankind moving to the stars to survive. The worst instance however is easily midway through the film just as Eddie has come into contact with the Venom Symbiote and is desperate to expose what Drake is really doing and seeks out Anne who after six months has started a new relationship with Dan who just happens to be a Doctor and Surgeon who can perform tests on Eddie leading to them discovering the symbiote.

Perhaps it was more glaringly painful to see such exposition as a fan of the Spider-Verse but there is so much hand holding in getting the audience to see and know exactly what is happening without leaving any room for happenstance in the story just grated on me a little too much such as seeing during testing just how many failed attempts at finding successful hosts for the remaining symbiotes yet the key Symbiotes in the story manage to find ones almost without issue which again is just convenient for the story to progress. It also did not help that the supporting cast were not as great on screen as Tom Hardy’s performance. Michelle Williams came across quite dead pan which helped in some of the humour, and this is actually quite a funny film, but in scenes where Anne was supposed to be emotional with Eddie it really only worked because Hardy was so good. Riz Ahmed as Drake simply delivered the stand rich douchebag cliché big bad performance but never felt threatening or imposing a character but someone who simply relied on having as much money as Tony Stark but just happened to be more of a dick about it.

Speaking of other MARVEL characters, what was interesting was that this film made no references to anything else in the MARVEL universe and instead completely stuck to the Symbiote section of the spider-Verse. Even in the use of Venom’s powers it was clear that a deliberate decision was made not to have him suddenly start web-slinging or wall crawling but instead just using tendrils and brute strength in combat and action sequences. In fact, the only real comic book reference comes when Venom is explaining to Eddie what his weakness are such as loud sound vibrations and fire, and Anne makes the reference of “so sound is like your Kryptonite”, which at first was funny but also a little on the nose, something which came around yet again in a post credit scene but will come to that later. This is truly a standalone film and story, not set in or trying to be part of the large MCU which is interesting considering the Spider-Man deal between MARVEL and Sony, but even its own previous Amazing Spider-Man films. It does work though, there is more than enough content and story here that it really does not rely on other films to justify it.

The action sequences are fine but most of which have already been shown in trailers such as the motorcycle chase but the physical side just blend in well with the heavy CGI moments when Venom is on screen doing his thing. I would say there is little point in seeing this in either IMAX or 3D as the big set pieces were not all that special and also happen at night making it very dark which would only be darker when wearing the 3D shades in most cinemas. The special effects were good, I did like the almost Hulk like size when Venom fully takes over Eddie and unlike others, the fact he doesn’t have the traditional white Spider logo on his chest was never an issue for me because Spider-Man is not part of this origin story. But the use of real-world stunts and those of CGI fight scenes for me was nice to see and were executed really well.

Coming back to Tom Hardy’s performance and again, it is his performance in bringing both Venom and Eddie to life that stands out the most. This is mainly because he actually is performing two separate characters and knowing that Tom recording his lines as Venom and then had an ear piece so he could react to those lines as Eddie really helped bring both to life. The power in seeing Eddie struggle with Venom for control and then to see an almost Gollum like dialogue exchange between Venom and Eddie as each come to accept that they both need each other to live as the consequence of having the Symbiote damaged Eddie’s internal organs to start with means he needs Venom to constantly heal him and Venom needs a host in order to survive on Earth and Eddie is the most compatible one for him. Seeing his performance as both is riveting and I do not think any other actor could have delivered as much sincerity or substance to the role. Hardy truly holds the whole film and story together and I really enjoyed watching as both Eddie and especially Venom, start to understand the partnership both must now put up with which started with Venom very much the dominate one but gradually becoming more accepting of Eddie’s needs and wants, such as not biting the heads of anyone he feels like just because he is hungry.

On paper there is a lot about Venom that doesn’t quite get it right but the strength of the parts that do including what Tom Hardy brings to the role of Eddie/Venom made this an enjoyable film to watch and the potential for more films is there if handled right, something that as I mentioned before, the rather heavy handed on the nose referencing in the mid post credit scene delivered certainly suggests there will be, oh and there is a post credits scene at the end you wont want to miss either. I went into my local cinema with concerns and the rumblings of the mixed reviews from early previews did have me worried. But I actually came out smiling after laughing with the film when it wanted me to but also at some other parts which I was not supposed to laugh at but then I did feel there is also some self-awareness which the film embraces.

I had a fun time watching Venom and enjoyed it more then I had expected to going in. It may not be the best superhero film out this year but it is certainly worth watching and though I do sense this could be a very marmite film for Spidey fans, Tom Hardy’s performance makes it well worth a look and I would really love to see a future where his Venom/Eddie Brock meets the Tom Holland Spider-Man if another Sony Disney/MARVEL deal can be done.

With the rumour of a new OnePlus phone coming this month, so I thought I would bring all the best rumours from the net for you to read in one place.

The first rumour is that the next phone from OnePlus will be coming to T-Mobile in the USA, if true this will become first US official partner carrier.

Second rumour is that a leaked OnePlus 6T box appears to confirm in-display fingerprint sensor. With a fingerprint icon at the bottom of the diagram suggests that, as speculated, the OnePlus 6T will be the first OnePlus to feature an in-displayer fingerprint scanner, also the OnePlus 6T to have a ‘water drop design’ notch if you look at the leaked box.

The Crystal Maze LIVE Experience has today announced that in Spring 2019 it will be launching the largest maze yet in the heart of London and home of British entertainment, the West End.

The all-new West End maze early bird tickets go on sale from today. The new site at the London Trocadero will cater for the unprecedented demand experienced by the Islington venue since 2016 with 32 all-new games, a new Maze Bar and, for the first time, all day opening hours and on-the-day ticket purchases. The Maze will also open up to a younger audience by offering games for 13 years old and up.

The move to Shaftesbury Avenue follows the success of the attraction since launching via Indiegogo back in 2015. The project’s popularity was initially proven by a sold-out run of eight months, with fans of the cult TV series eager to take part themselves. Since launch, the experience has gone on to create its own fanbase distinct from the show and has now outgrown its North London setting.

The Aztec, Industrial, Future and Medieval zones have proved popular with not just the UK public but also tourists looking to enjoy a piece of authentic British eccentricity. Since opening, amongst the more than 300,000 visitors to the maze have been public figures from the likes of Cara Delevingne, Skepta and the England Rugby team to Liam Gallagher, Jonathan Ross and Rio Ferdinand. Approximately 225,000 Crystals have been claimed to date and roughly 75,000 people have found themselves locked in.

As part of the Maze’s move to London’s theatre district, another British entertainment favourite, Dom Joly, was drafted in to clear out some existing crystal stock, by any means necessary.

Though the Maze is relocating the current games will not be going with them as all of the challenges in Shaftesbury Avenue will be brand new. Meaning this is the last opportunity for fans to enjoy all the original games in one place.
