Review: VelocityOne Flightstick

The VelocityOne Flightstick from Turtle Beach is a versatile and interesting gaming peripheral. Moreover, this simulation tool can be hard-wired for both Xbox and PC. Consequently, it reduces the need for multiple accessories and helps to keep your workspace streamlined. What’s more, it has an array of custom options as well as the ability to link it via USB-C to other peripherals. Accordingly, you have everything you need in one place.

Alongside this, the flightstick is designed predominantly for space simulation or combat flight games. However, I enjoyed using it with Microsoft Flight simulation as well. However, there are better accessories that will improve your MFS experience. For example, look at the VelocityOne Flight for a more complete setup. Yet, this doesn’t detract from what is otherwise an impressive and affordable gaming accessory.

What’s in the box of the VelocityOne Flightstick?

  • The packaging is vibrant, recyclable, and easy to the eye. Furthermore, a helpful fabric loop allows you to carry it easily. What’s more, the robust packaging ensures the contents remain safe during transit.
  • The VelicityOne Flighstick comes preassembled. Alongside the 32 buttons and 8 axes, you’ll discover 3xM5 slots to secure this controller. This was essential as the unit would move unless secured to a surface.
  • A braided USB-C cable powers the controller.
  • Learn the fundamentals with the overview guide.

Technical aspects.

I was blown away by the number of buttons and the incredible flight management display. Accordingly, it takes some time to get used to every aspect of this controller. However, what impressed me, was its versatility across each platform. As such, if you enjoy VR gaming, you needn’t worry about a separate mouse or using a keyboard. Consequently, you can focus on your game and little else.

Turtle Beach focuses on usability thanks to the 27 programmable buttons and the awesome OLED flight management screen. The VelocityOne Flightstick uses an interesting FMD configurator wheel that is located at the base of the stick. This twistable wheel allows you to adjust a plethora of settings without playing with in-game menus. As such, you can alter audio, input, buttons, and much more. Additionally, you can test the device and change your profile with ease.

This incredible “at your fingertip” approach ensures that the controller is aligned with your gameplay style. Furthermore, you can adjust sensitivity and rudder lock, and you can choose stick orientation. Subsequently, it matters not if you are right or left-handed as this stick works perfectly either way.

In-game use.

The VelocityOne Flightstick was incredible no matter what game I played. Thanks to the adjustable settings, I could flit from fantasy sci-fi space games and ultra-realistic combat simulators without concern. Additionally, the ability to customise buttons and alter audio was a game-changer. Yet, the latter may be somewhat cumbersome for PC users. Accordingly, this element may be defunct.

I was impressed by the accuracy of both the digital and analogue POV buttons. Moreover, the placement at the top of the stick allows them to be used without undermining the rest of the controls. What’s more, the ability to flit between precision and fast modes changes this controller completely. As such, it takes some trial and error to get the right set-up. However, once you get things right, you’ll adore what you experience.

Build quality.

The VelocityOne Flightstick is unbelievably well-built. This compact sim controller moves on 8 axes and is perfect no matter what flight game you play. Additionally, the sturdy stick movement is reassuring and smooth thanks to the non-contact hall effect sensor in the yoke shaft. Alongside this, the throttle and flap control levers require minimal movement to make an impact. Subsequently, this requires some patience to master. However, the lower-placed detent buttons make a pleasant and decisive click that is easy to acknowledge. As such, it is perfect when playing in VR or if you are in a hefty and hectic battle.

On top of this, the ability to use the aux connection ports was a stroke of genius. I love that you can power multiple accessories from this controller and that streamlines your setup further. The well-positioned wrist support can be altered if you wish and this is essential if you are playing marathon gaming sessions. Furthermore, another key element was the m5 bolts. If you wish to have the best experience, I suggest you secure the stick to a workstation.

Is the VelocityOne Flightstick worth it?

There are some incredible flight sim accessories. However, most are expensive and lack versatility. Thankfully, the  VelocityOne Flightstick is incredibly easy to set up, wonderful to use, and can be enjoyed whether you use VR, PC, or an Xbox. What’s more, the customisable buttons, RGB backlighting, 3.5mm audio port, and robust build quality make this stand out from the crowd. Additionally, it feels incredible to use and I loved how responsive every input was. As such, I recommend that you buy it here!

Preview: Nearly Dead – Live and Let Die

Nearly Dead – Live and Let Die is a fun and often cruel zombie experience. Moreover, it is great to play casually and can be enjoyed solo or cooperatively with another. Additionally, there is a range of characters to pick from, a smattering of guns to buy and find, and plenty of brain-chewing zombies to annihilate. As such, it is good mindless fun that can eat up hours of your day.

This Early Access rouge-like title was developed and published by Mono Software, Inc. What’s more, it incorporates some survival elements and monstrous waves of zombies to destroy. On top of this, you must explore a range of strange locations and defeat gargantuan and often cruel bosses if you wish to progress. As such, this isn’t a game for the faint of heart.

Work as a team to tackle the monstrous zombies.
Work together to take it down.

Nearly Dead – Live and Let Die has no story.

I was somewhat disappointed to discover a lack of a story. Though this isn’t essential in this genre, it is always pleasant to have something that underpins everything you see and do. Furthermore, when an array of characters is on offer, a backstory is quite a pleasant distraction. Yet, this wasn’t to be, and you plod along and kill everything in sight, regardless.

Though there isn’t a plot, there is plenty of depth nevertheless. Thanks to an impressive weapon upgrade system, perks, and character strengths and weaknesses, there are plenty of opportunities to customise this into your play style. On top of this, you can be as aggressive or defensive as you wish. Thanks to the varied weaponry, you can go toe to toe with each zombie or take potshots from a distance. Either way, you must destroy everything you see and survive for as long as possible.

Choose your path as you explore the world.
Where will you go?

A simple gameplay loop.

Nearly Dead – Live and Let Die uses a 3 stage gameplay loop to create familiarity. This simple approach was appreciated. However, it may be too basic for veterans of this genre. Accordingly, I’d like to see this expand as the game evolves to add more depth and further gameplay options. Yet, in its current build, you must survive a nighttime attack on your base, followed by a period of peace. Finally, you must explore a random location to hunt for loot and kill more zombies.

This gameplay loop continues until you wish to progress. When this happens, you will enter a boss stage that will test your equipment, perks, skills, and resolve. In a typical rogue-like fashion, if you die, and you likely will, your progress is wiped, and you must return to the home screen. Here, you can invest your hard-earned points in upgrading equipment. This is essential as the better the gear you have, the more likely you will survive. What’s more, you can adjust your character’s base perks to alter your approach as you try new and whacky ways to succeed.

Nearly Dead – Live and Let Die is wonderfully pixelated.

The top-down perspective and the pixelated graphics work incredibly well together. Furthermore, the use of earthy colours and varied environments keep you on your toes. My only complaint is a lack of base-building elements to enhance the gameplay further. However, don’t let this put you off an otherwise polished title.

The audio is uncomfortable, loud, and in your face. Moreover, the soundtrack is wonderfully oppressive and the moan of every zombie will make your skin crawl. Whether it was the slash of a blade, the thump of a pipe, or the shot of a pistol, things never got boring.

Grab a flamethrower and toast those zombies.
Toast those zombies.

Simple controls.

The developers have created a well-mapped layout that is easy to navigate and simple to understand. Moreover, the blend of skills and abilities is incorporated well into the main body of the action. As such, no matter what approach you take, you will not struggle to pick this up.

Though this is unfortunately short, there is plenty of replay value and longevity. Thanks to the number of characters on offer and the massive arsenal of weapons, no playthrough is ever the same. Yes, I’d like more content added, but there is plenty to see and do, especially if you tackle this with another player.

Nearly Dead – Live and Let Die is a great indie title.

Zombie survival games are nothing new. Accordingly, developers must do a lot to stand out from the crowd. Though this is early days, I think Nearly Dead – Live and Let Die has done just that. With its fun gameplay and easy-to-follow mechanics, this is a great casual experience. Additionally, the ability to play it with your friends is a nice bonus. Therefore, I loved it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you annihilate every zombie and survive to see another day? Pick a character, choose a weapon, and hope that luck is on your side.

Preview: Below the Stone

Below the Stone is a dank and dangerous adventure title that rewards risky behaviour. Moreover, its pixelated aesthetic and easy-to-understand gameplay makes for a pleasant experience. However, its short playtime and lack of content hold it back. As such, some work is required for this Early Access game to reach its potential.

This rogue-like title was developed by Strollart and published by Apogee Entertainment. What’s more, it comprises plenty of combat and resource gathering and has a sense of grind. Accordingly, though it utilises procedurally generated maps, the action is somewhat repetitive. Now, this may seem like a complaint, but it isn’t. Instead, this familiarity works well with the theme and core mechanics.

The caves are full of danger and treasure.
Grab that treasure.

Below the Stone has no plot.

Though a strong plot isn’t always necessary, it disappoints me when there is no story whatsoever. Sadly, this is the case in Below the Stone. Once the initial lore and foundations are set, you are on your own. Consequently, it feels like there is a piece of the jigsaw missing. Furthermore, it would have been nice to explore relationships with the main NPCs.

The action revolves around a rookie Dwarven miner. This would-be hero rescues a key member of the mining community. Subsequently, you are given free rein to explore as you wish and to mine for treasures. En route, you’ll encounter monsters, ore, fossils, and other strange items. However, you are free to explore as much as you wish. Yet, if you die, you lose everything. As such, how far are you willing to go before you lose it all?

A simple gameplay loop.

Below the Stone asks you to undertake up to 3 missions per adventure. To escape, you must complete 1 of them. However, if you complete all 3, you are rewarded with resources and gold. The small Dwarven village allows you to trade goods, forge equipment, and brew potions. Furthermore, you can store items at the bank for safekeeping.

As you enter the mine, you must wield a pickaxe, sword, axe, crossbow, or gun. Additionally, you’ll need to battle waves of monsters and dig through walls to find ore. Moreover, there are secret bases, hidden pathways, and a second level of the mine to discover. As you delve deeper, the difficulty increases, but resources become rarer. Accordingly, you must be well-prepared if you wish to succeed.

Once you’ve completed your mission, you must return home. This sounds easy, but your ride home summons monsters. Consequently, you’ll need to fight until the drill is ready to take you. This frustrating element was amusing and annoying. However, once you understood what was required, you rarely failed.

Below the Stone has a decent crafting system.
What will you craft?

What could be better?

I understand that Below the Stone is an Early Access title. Consequently, I expected shortcomings. Thankfully, though, most of the issues revolve around content and the gameplay balancing. Once the developers add more depth, the game will be incredible.

Alongside this, I’d love to see more challenging missions. At the moment, you dive into the mine, get what you want, and get out ASAP. It would be interesting to see multilayered objectives that require several visits. Furthermore, the incorporation of clans and other villages would create branching stories and some fun rivalries.

Below the Stone looks great.

Though pixelated games are two a penny, I loved Below the Stone’s approach. The grim lighting and claustrophobic arenas were uncomfortable to explore. Moreover, each sprite looked great and the animation was smooth. Alongside this, the procedurally generated maps were fascinating to explore.

The audio was just as good. The daunting soundtrack was atmospheric and creepy. Additionally, the sound effects were loud and aggressive and suited the fantasy theme. Yet, there is no spoken narrative, and that was a shame. It would have been nice to hear each NPC come to life with some booming sound bites.

Mushrooms light the cave.
Allow the mushrooms to light the way.

Straightforward controls.

Below the Stone was surprisingly easy to play. Thanks to the straightforward UI and well-considered layout, you’ll master it quickly. Furthermore, the responsive inputs allow you the ability to tackle every foe you face.

With only 6 to 8 hours of game time, this is relatively short. However, I believe that the developers will add more content to pad this out. Moreover, no playthrough is the same, enhancing both replay value and longevity.

Below the Stone is great fun.

Rogue-like games are often tough, unforgiving, and frustrating. However, Below the Stone bucks this trend. Mostly, it is a fun and captivating experience. Yes, it has shortcomings, but I believe these will be ironed out. Accordingly, I enjoyed it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you become a famous Dwarven miner? Grab your gear, complete your mission, and survive every expedition.

Review: Techtonica

0

Techtonica is a game that puts players in charge of building and operating their own factory on a rogue planet. After being left on an alien planet, players will branch out and explore the world around them from a first person perspective and while this sounds like a blast for some, this is simply a chore for those who are not interested in this genre of game. Since this game is still in Early Access, there is a lot that may change over the course of time that may make some points of this review obsolete.

Techtonica doesn’t focus heavily on a story and really sets players free to design their factory in any manner that they see fitting for the underground world. Since there are no monsters wandering about, players are able to focus solely on setting up their factory without fear of interruption by the local wildlife. This was a nice breath of fresh air from other “Base” building games since I was able to proceed in peace. Since the game has a lot of self-explanatory systems and tools, it was nice to go at my own pace without being bombarded with an overwhelming amount of information from the start. This is a flaw that a lot of simulation games tend to have and often leaves me ready to put the game down due to an overload of information as opposed to continuing my journey.

One thing that I did enjoy over the course of my time with the game is the fact that there was always something new to learn and do thanks to the ever growing tech tree. This did give me a sense of progression as I continued through the game. While the story was underwhelming for me, the sense of progression made the time spent here memorable. Thankfully the game also offers a multiplayer mode for you to build your dream factory with friends so I was able to squeeze a little more playtime out of what would have been a short experience for myself. Whether playing solo or with some friends, there is definitely some fun to be found here.

While this is a game that is easy to pick up and hard to put down for fans of the genre, there is very little for outsiders to enjoy here. Each sit down really felt like a chore and after a couple of hours, I found myself just pushing on in order to expand on my tech tree. Building the Factory was definitely a fun part of the journey but I would find myself losing interest since there was no danger or anything to keep me engaged besides the constant flow of performing research in order to continue developing my factory. I would have liked to see a mode where there was at least a little bit of a threat that would have kept me engaged since I often found myself lost in a monotonous routine here. The ability to toggle enemies on and off would have made for a wonderful addition for those who want the sense of danger that comes with having to stay aware of your surroundings for more than just resources. Unfortunately this lack of danger made it hard for me to really get invested in the world around me. While the story might have been trying to encourage me to push forward, I didn’t find it compelling enough to want to see it through to the end.

The visuals here were phenomenal and were a stronger point in my playthrough thanks to the combination of the vibrant colors from the game and the OLED screen on the updated steam deck. I was captivated by the landscape that I spent hours exploring and the music that accompanied it wasn’t too out of place either. It really made for a real serene experience and is one that I wish I could have enjoyed just a little more. A lot of my screenshots are from the early hours of the game simply because I would find myself lost in the moment in regards to building up the factory.

For those who are major fans of games such as Satisfactory, there is definitely some fun to be found here. You are given a story to work alongside and the idea of building a factory on an alien planet is a very intriguing one at best. Unfortunately for those who are jumping into this with no experience with factory building games or got roped into it due to their friend circle, this might be another game that misses the mark entirely. I could see myself picking this up on a slow weekend with some friends to pass the time but there was nothing here noteworthy that would have me diving back in as a solo player.  At the time of writing this, Techtonica is available on Steam as well as Xbox series S and Series X. For those looking to get a small taste of the game, it is available via Game pass so you can find out if it is more suited for your tastes. As stated beforehand, this title is in early access so it is important to go in with that in mind. While I did not come across any major issues during my playthrough, It is important to know the state of the game since that can also be a deal breaker for some.

Review: Make Way

Make Way epitomises every fine element of a competitive racer. Moreover, its action seamlessly blends the madness of Fall Guys with the moreish nature of Micro Machines. As such, once you start playing this, it is tough to put down.

This top-down racer was developed by Ice BEAM and published by Secret MODE. What’s more, it can be enjoyed alone or competitively with 3 others. Accordingly, this hellish game will have you screaming, laughing, and falling out with your friends.

It is time to build the track.
Build that track!

Make Way tests you.

Though Make Way is simple to understand, the action was surprisingly taxing. Every playthrough is different, and every race evolves at lightning speed. Accordingly, you must be alert, pay attention, and bring your A-game if you wish to succeed.

The aim of this title is straightforward. You either compete with 3 friends or 3 NPC racers. During each event, you must score 3000 points to win. If you pass through every checkpoint, destroy your foes or complete stunts, you’ll earn points. However, you must be aware that death will impact your score, and everyone and everything is out to destroy you.

Time to win that race.
And the race begins.

A simple gameplay loop.

At the start of each race, a handful of track pieces, obstacles, and traps are available. Players must pick the one they want and construct the course ahead. Consequently, you’ll endure a helter-skelter track of madness. Whether there are loop de loops, chasms, sharp corners, or U-turns, you must deal with it. Additionally, traps, boost pads, and obstacles make things harder still.

Alongside this, there are an array of vehicles to unlock, weapons to wield, and track pieces to earn. As such, the game is constantly evolving and this adds to the excitement. Each race can be over in a flash or last forever. Subsequently, this is where the tactics and fun begin. You can team up and try to destroy the best player. Alternatively, you can go it alone and hope that luck is on your side.

Make Way looks great.

The top-down perspective was fantastic. Furthermore, your field of view is restricted, so this tests your memory and reactions. This was a brilliant choice that enhanced the drama. Additionally, I loved the vibrant colours and the variety of track pieces. Moreover, the cars looked great and every explosion and shot fired was impressive.

The audio followed suit. The upbeat soundtrack was complemented by the insane sound effects. Accordingly, the engines were loud, and every weapon was crass. As such, even when you die, you can’t escape the madness.

Can you loop de loop?
Can you loop de loop?

Exceptional controls.

I know the whole mouse and keyboard vs controller debate is fiery. However, Make Way focuses on the latter input. As such, the layout was intuitive, and it was easy to pick up and play. Furthermore, the controls were exceptional and this made it an enjoyable experience.

Every race is unique! What’s more, there are several game modes to unlock as well. Subsequently, you can increase the difficulty, remove the barriers, and change plenty more settings. This was an excellent choice by the developers as it enhances both longevity and replay value.

Make Way is the new Micro Machines

For years, Micro Machines has been considered an exceptional indie racer. Yet, I believe Make Way has taken that mantle! This amazing indie title blew my mind thanks to its zany action and simple approach. Furthermore, its gameplay will enrage you so much that you’ll laugh, cry, and scream at your friends. Consequently, it is wonderfully brutal, unbelievably enjoyable, and a must-play title. I loved this game and I recommend that you buy it here! It is the winning, not the taking part that counts. Bash, shoot, and destroy your opponents in this insane racing game.

Review: A Perfect Day

A Perfect Day is a bittersweet title that delivers deja vu gameplay. This beautifully melancholy experience is slow-paced, interesting, and full of colourful characters. What’s more, it sticks to its genre tropes and is the perfect title to relax and unwind with. However, it is this laid-back approach that will only appeal to a niche audience. Accordingly, I don’t believe this will get the credit that it deserves.

This visual novel was developed and published by Perfect Day Studio. Moreover, this gentle-paced game has some fun tasks and mini-games to enjoy throughout. As such, it breaks up the mountains of text and the pressure to make the right decision.

Can you have a perfect day?
Will you have the perfect day?

A Perfect Day is repetition personified.

The phrase repetitive gameplay is usually frowned upon. This negative term highlights tedium and a lack of creative prowess. However, in this case, A Perfect Day utilises this idea exceptionally well. The gameplay loop focuses on 1 fateful day in the lives of a group of schoolchildren. Consequently, the plot is full of magic, immature mindsets, and a sense of bewilderment and unknown.

You play the part of an elementary school boy who lacks courage. His nerves restrict him from truly excelling, and only by pushing himself, will he truly be happy. It is the last day of 1999 and your class has been dismissed for their holidays early. However, only one thing is on the mind of the protagonist. He wishes to give a card to his favourite classmate, but he feels he cannot. Subsequently, he must learn to do what’s right to create the perfect and final day of the millennia.

A beautiful letter with cute imagery.
A beautiful message.

Plenty of secrets to the perfect day.

Though the thought of replaying one day repetitively should have filled me with dread, I loved the mini-games and the secrets that unfolded. Alongside this, the wonderful setting and interesting characters were captivating. Utilising classic genre tropes, you are free to drive the narrative however you choose. Accordingly, you could hang out with different friends or waste time in the park. Alternatively, you may wish to build cars or enjoy some retro gaming.

Whatever you pick, the story will plod on regardless. However, some restrictions force you down certain paths. It was fantastic as it ensured that you’d explore different relationships. Furthermore, it pushes you to other areas of the map that you may have otherwise ignored. I love this mechanic as other VNs are too open and choosing a story path can be confusing. Yet, A Perfect Day allows you to develop the protagonist whilst discovering secrets and hidden Easter Eggs of their surroundings.

A Perfect Day is amazing to look at.

The art style is incredible. The hand-drawn aesthetic combined with the unique character models didn’t disappoint. Alongside this, each varied location offers an interesting insight into unfamiliar Asian culture. Accordingly, the wonderful imagery and striking character models bring this slow-paced title to life.

A Perfect Day is a calming and relaxing endeavour. The blend of soft and slow-paced songs will not disappoint you. Furthermore, in typical VN style, the sound effects are occasionally overbearing and OTT. As such, some cringeworthy moments didn’t match the laidback elements.

Pick your car and win the race.
Will you win the race?

Simple controls.

Though there are some mini-games and events to be aware of, A Perfect Day is easy to play. The simple control system is mastered immediately and this allows you to focus on the action. However, though it was straightforward, I believe a mouse and keyboard would make this more enjoyable to play.

If you enjoy reading and you don’t mind reliving the same experience repeatedly, this has both replay value and longevity. What was particularly good was when minor changes had a big impact on the plot. Alternatively, maybe you enjoy uncovering secrets. Either way, this interesting story has it all.

A Perfect Day is a beautifully melancholy title.

This slow-paced and repetitive game shouldn’t have been a success. However, every element of it combines to create a beautifully melancholy experience. Furthermore, the interesting characters and stunning settings add depth to an interesting and captivating story. Accordingly, I loved it and I recommend that you buy it here! If you had the chance to change your past, would you do it? Explore your surroundings, make new friends, and create A Perfect Day.

Review: Haunted House

Haunted House is the epitome of clichéd action. This fun, albeit annoying endeavour is excellent for newcomers to the rogue-like genre. Veterans, on the other hand, will be underwhelmed by straightforward action and entry-level simplicity.

This spooky rogue-like was developed by Orbit Studio and published by Atari. Moreover, there are plenty of stealth mechanics that add some depth to the action. However, the repetitive nature of the core gameplay loop ensures that this is best enjoyed casually.

The hero must sneak around the Haunted House.
Don’t disturb the creature.

Haunted House tells a creepy tale.

I love ridiculous and outrageous stories. Yet, if this is the approach you are going to take, I want everything to be OTT and unnecessarily silly. Thankfully, this is exactly what you get in this ghostly experience. However, the unbelievable nature of the plot doesn’t undermine the action. Instead, it complements the strange theme and never outstays its welcome.

You control Lyn Graves, the precarious niece of legendary treasure hunter, Zachary Graves. This adventure-seeking child is determined to follow in her uncle’s footsteps. Yet, the moment she enters his house, her world is turned upside down! Unfortunately, supernatural forces have captured her friends and family, and Lyn must piece together a broken urn to save them. Unsurprisingly, this is easier said than done.

A simple gameplay loop.

In classic rogue-like fashion, the gameplay loop is easy to understand. Effectively, you are tasked with exploring each area of a procedurally generated house. Within each room, you must complete tasks to unlock the doors. En route, you’ll encounter ghosts, traps, treasure, and collectables. Moreover, there are side quests to complete and death is all but assured.

If you die, and you will, your body is sent to the lobby of the mansion, and you must begin again. On top of this, your coins and items are destroyed and only your gems and collectables survive. Luckily, it is the gems that truly matter! This in-game currency is used to improve your health, lantern power, stamina, item slots, and stealth ability. Consequently, the more you explore and the more gems you discover, the better you become and the easier each run becomes.

The atmosphere is super creepy.
The house is creepy enough as it is!

Stealth is the name of the game.

Haunted House focuses primarily on a stealthy approach. Each ghostly apparition can be annihilated if they don’t spot you. However, if they are aware of your presence, they’ll chase you and cause damage. Unfortunately, if this happens, you are likely to die and this was frustrating.

On top of this, to make matters worse, there are traps and furniture that hurt you and make noise. Accordingly, you must stay in the shadows whilst planning your route across every room. Moreover, you are tasked with completing an array of tasks, and this makes matters worse. Subsequently, some tactical nuances must be considered throughout.

Haunted House looks pleasant.

Though I wasn’t blown away by the graphics, Haunted House was pleasant enough. The character models were attractive and the animation was smooth. Alongside this, the lighting added depth to a straightforward approach. Furthermore, each unlocked area was unique and this prevented boredom from kicking in.

The audio enhances the creepy nature of the game. The sombre soundtrack was complemented by the unusual sound effects. Additionally, I liked the weird and wonderful noises of your ghastly foes. Consequently, though it wasn’t original, it was fun and well-considered.

The hero runs from alerted ghosts.
Time to run away.

Excellent controls.

The simple-to-understand control system makes Haunted House a cinch to play. Thanks to the concise tutorial, newcomers will have this mastered immediately. Moreover, responsive inputs ensure that you stay one step ahead.

As the action is procedurally generated, no playthrough is the same. Yet the repetitive gameplay loop was a concern. Subsequently, this is best enjoyed in short bursts. What impressed me, though, was the volume of collectables and the mountain of side quests. As such, there is both replay value and longevity.

Haunted House is a good indie title.

Atari publish some great titles. However, Haunted House doesn’t quite hit those heights. Its simplistic approach and repetitive gameplay loop hold it back. Yet, it is still a good indie title and ideal for anyone wishing to test the genre. Accordingly, I liked it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you save the day? Find your friends and uncle, banish the ghosts, and become a hero.

Review: iClever BTH18 headphones

The iClever BTH18 headphones are striking, easy to use, and robust. Furthermore, they complement the colourful and fun iClever BTH19 headphones. Accordingly, if you have 2 children who love blue and pink, you can’t go wrong with these headphones. On top of this, they have in-built audio limiters, and a microphone for gaming and talking to friends, and they are foldable to stow in a bag.

Alongside this, you can set them up in seconds and they have 2 fantastic lighting options. Accordingly, they will impress anyone from the age of 3 years or more. Additionally, these over-ear headphones are extremely comfortable to wear, and the flexible headband can be adjusted with ease. What’s more, the tactile buttons ensure that you can use them with little fuss. Consequently, they are ideal for younger and older children alike.

What’s in the box of the iClever BTH18 headphones?

  • The compact packaging is understated. As such, they don’t jump off the shelf and attract your attention. However, this matters not as the headphones are vibrant and wonderful to look at.
  • The iClever BTH18 headphones will impress the toughest of critics. The RGB lighting and simple-to-use buttons make these headphones stand out from the crowd.
  • Connect the headphones to any compatible device with the 3.5mm audio cable.
  • Power the headphones with the USB-C cable.
  • Learn the fundamentals with the user manual.

Technical aspects.

The safe volume tech is impressive. With 3 restricted volume profiles, you know that your children’s hearing will be safe. Toddlers and young children can restrict the audio to a maximum of 74 dB. Alternatively, you may select 85 dB in louder areas or 94 dB if you are travelling on a train, aeroplane, or bus. These profiles were important as they ensured that every user was safe no matter the location.

Alongside this, the 5.3 Bluetooth delivers a low-power connection that is secure and easy to find. Moreover, the built-in microphone delivers pleasant voice pick-up for gaming or phone calls. What’s more, the battery life is impressive! One charge lasts a whopping 43 hours. As such, you are assured that the iClever BTH18 headphones will last long journeys. However, if you run out of juice, you can plug this device into a compatible source and keep the music playing.

Audio quality.

Though I didn’t expect the iClever BTH18 headphones to sound great, they impressed me nonetheless. The range of tones was pleasant and the bass was balanced. Accordingly, every song, game, and podcast was comfortable to listen to. Moreover, thanks to the safe volume tech, you rarely struggle. As such, the dialogue was clear and every song sounded as it should. Therefore, these inexpensive headphones were pleasantly impressive.

Build quality.

Weighing only 155 grams, the iClever BTH18 headphones are remarkably light. Furthermore, the robust hinges ensure the headphones can be folded without concern. Moreover, the headband can be expanded and retracted by pushing and pulling each earcup. As such, they can be adjusted to fit many different shaped heads.

On top of this, the plush earcup material is comfortable and pleasant for extended use. Additionally, the headphones do not push on your temples and this makes them extremely comfortable. If your child loves to stand out from the crowd, the RGB and vivid white lighting options will appease them. At the flick of a switch, the outer panel or each earcup is lit up like a beacon. Subsequently, not only are these headphones comfortable to wear, but they look great as well.

Are the iClever BTH18 headphones worth it?

There are plenty of affordable child-friendly headphones to pick from. However, getting a pair that looks and feels great isn’t so easy. Moreover, you want to protect your child’s hearing and ensure that they are aware of their surroundings. As such, you’ll want to invest in the iClever BTH18 headphones by buying them here!

The iClever BTH18 headphones have been awarded the Movies Games and Tech Gold Award.

Review: TEVI

TEVI pulled a very manipulative trick on me. I was having a casual stroll through a mutated, sickly looking forest when I suddenly realised I recognised the music. It was Venom by Dance With The Dead. A great song by my absolute favourite band. If TEVI had gone on to print out vouchers for Aspall cider and bars of white chocolate, it probably would’ve gotten a 10/10. I’m not that immune to bribery, after all.

Still, even discounting the Dance With The Dead tracks, TEVI puts in a good showing. Usually with Metroidvania games, I hit a wall about two-thirds in. The sprawling nature, and the constantly getting lost, wears me down. I didn’t get that with TEVI. I just wanted to keep poking around in the corners. It’s an excessively charming game, with a lot of variety, and has some interesting tricks up its sleeve. Though it does suffer from some slightly wonky gameplay balance.

TEVI - Tevi enjoys a nice drink on the beach.

Hop, Skip And Jump

Let me say right out of the gate that TEVI‘s world is a wonderful one. Partly that’s down to the visuals. Everything’s just so bright and happy. Each new area feels distinct, with its own colour palette. Even the giant, glowing balls of death are in pleasant, luminous shades. It’s an adorable pixel art style, with such fine art that you forget it’s pixel art all. No crunchy, blocky pixels here. Just wonderful backgrounds and adorable characters. Hell, the main character is a cute chibi girl with bunny ears. Though some designs are… interesting. No one can wear a belt correctly in this world. One lady wears one as a bra, which brings the words ‘nipple pinching’ to mind.

This world is more than cute, though. It’s interesting too. In the world of TEVI, humanity has – rather unsurprisingly – managed to all but wipe itself out. This is down to a magitech – think magic powered robot – rebellion. Thirty years later and the non-rebellious magitech have formed into various factions, as have the beastkin and the presumably embarassed human survivors. Meanwhile, Tevi, a human wearing a fashionable set of bunny ears, is going about collecting ‘Astral Gears’, a potent source of mana. This is to help her father combat the decay that’s spreading around the world. There’s a lot going on in this world. Can be a little hard to keep up.

Perhaps that’s why Tevi’s motivations are kept rather simple. The first half of the game is essentially a scavenger hunt as we travel around the world, doing odd jobs for people and scooping up gears. At one point we decide to visit heaven and hell. Just ’cause. Tevi’s journey feels a tad disconnected from the rest of the world. Still, her support characters keep things grounded. Sable, a demon, and Celia, an angel, have some good banter with Tevi. I grew to like all three by the end. The dialogue has a lot of funny (and emotionally devastating) moments but does suffer from a tone issue. Snarky lines come in right when characters are baring their soul. It also has a strange fixation with Celia’s breasts, which did make the whole thing feel a little creepy at times.

TEVI - Tevi and Celia battle The Eidolon.

Drag Me To Bullet Hell

So how does TEVI play? Well, it’s a metroidvania so we can break it down into three parts: movement, exploration and combat. Let’s take movement first – this is TEVI‘s sweet spot. Running and jumping feels good, feeling neither floaty nor sticky. When TEVI begins bringing in giant swinging axes, avoiding them feels smooth and simple. The usual suite of movement upgrades come in, but it paces them well and the map opens organically. It makes the most of its movement too, putting light platforming challenges everywhere. Not so difficult as to overtake any of the rest of the game, but enough that you can’t just breeze through. That’s the first big tick.

Exploration is a bit more nuanced though. On the good side, exploring the map hands you lots of rewards. There are potions everywhere that buff your skills, new sigils to unlock (we’ll get to those in a mo) and cash in half the walls. Going off the beaten track is usually rewarded. The good movement makes it natural to do so as well. It does have a couple of black marks though. Enemies respawn when you leave a room, for one, making backtracking feel like a chore. The map is also rubbish. It doesn’t show you all the exits to a room, so you’ve no way of knowing which rooms branch off and which don’t. Surely that’s cartography 101. Let’s give exploration half a tick.

Combat is probably the weakest area. It’s got promise. There’s a mechanic where you can launch enemies and smack them into the wall, like a violent game of squash, and that’s good. Your side characters also shoot various ranged attacks, which do add some flair. There are also strong Bullet Hell elements, which I’m all about. It just feels both flat and, on Normal at least, poorly balanced. For one, the basic combo is just pressing X over and over. This wipes up most enemies, with little variation. Boss Fights do spice things up and are definitely TEVI‘s strong point. They bring in the Bullet Hell bits. Tevi’s hitbox just seems a little too small though. I found I could just stroll past most of the bullets. This is more akin to Bullet Limbo.

TEVI - Celia, Tevi and Sable speak to Memine.

TEVI: A Solid Package

The end result is that I died precisely once, from getting stunlocked by a swinging axe. Not to say that all games should be brutally difficult but the flat combat made it a little too easy. Even bosses get stunned by the basic melee combo, so I just ricocheted them off every hard surface until death. The sigil mechanic had the potential to fix this. These are equippable buffs that you collect by exploring that boost certain mechanics, like buffing ranged damage. Problem is, they don’t change enough. Most are just straight stat increases and the points you need to equip them are given so freely, I was practically plastered with them by the end.

Still, I finished the game feeling positive. Partly that’s down to the excellent final boss, which brings all of the good points home to roost. I also think a large part is down to TEVI‘s sense of style. The art and character designs put in good work, but I want to give props to the worldbuilding too. This feels like a world with history. Giving us that whole world to explore then, makes the most of the genre. As I said at the start, I never felt myself wearying of it.

It’s also got a great soundtrack and I’m not just praising Dance With The Dead again. The unique tracks are great too. I still find myself humming the song for Travoll Mines. Just strolling about the world feels nice. I wouldn’t say TEVI is a triumph of style over substance, as that would be a disservice to the nice movement and exploration, but it’s an attractive package. It’s just a shame the combat can’t keep up, but there is great potential here for further improvement. The biggest shame though is that neither ‘Get Out’ nor ‘That House’ by Dance With The Dead were used. That knocked off a couple of points. Turns out my susceptibility to bribery is balanced by excessive pettiness.

(TEVI’s Steam Page)
