Reach for the SkyDrive – UWHS’s Day in the Clouds

On Friday I was lucky enough to be invited into London for a special adventure. An adventure hosted by Microsoft and based around their SkyDrive product. Oh, and there were prizes!

IMG_1439

Earlier in the week I received this email:

What?

A fun filled day in the cloud exploring Microsoft SkyDrive by competing with fellow tech Gurus to win some fantastic prizes.

Why?

To discover latest version of SkyDrive and the celebrate the release of SkyDrive apps for Windows Phone and iPhone we’ll be offering a fantastic day out and tech treasures up for grabs including a brand new Windows 7 laptop and Nokia Lumia 800 with Windows Phone.

So off I went on Friday morning to the Marriot Hotel (the site of the old County Hall) in Westminster armed with my iPhone and my MacBook Air (yes, it was a Microsoft event, but that was the kit I had, and after all, the SkyDrive app has just been released for the iPhone.

The Challenges

Upon arriving at the hotel, I was greeted by my fellow tech bloggers who were all eager to find out what this was all about.

Ian from Microsoft then told us about SkyDrive and gave us a little demo while we all ate breakfast (well ok, everyone else had ate breakfast, I had barely made it to the hotel in time).

He then laid out the challenges for the day.

The day was all about SkyDrive and how easy it is to use. So this is what we were told:

Today is all about exploring the cloud physically and virtually. Armed with your SkyDrive apps you’ll be taking to the clouds aboard a capsule on The London Eye where you’ll be tasked to capture and share images of iconic London landmarks.

Challenge 1

We had to find and take pictures on our phones, using the SkyDrive app and then uploading the pictures to our SkyDrive account of four landmarks :

  • Battersea Power Station
  • St Paul’s Cathedral
  • The Shard
  • BT Tower

Once we had uploaded each picture, we had to then use our laptops to log into SkyDrive and share out the picture for all to see. We then had to tweet the link to the picture to all our twitter followers and ask them the question “What is the landmark in the photo and where was it taken from?” The first person to get three out of four correct responses would win two Nokia Lumia 800 Windows phones. Oh, and they had to include the hashtag #SkyDriveLondon for it to count.

Mobile broadband would be provided in the private capsule via several 3 MiFi devices.

What could possibly go wrong? Well we will come back to that in a minute.

Challenge 2

If that wasn’t enough, our second challenge would take place as soon as we returned from the Eye. We had to create a PowerPoint presentation, using Office Web Apps detailing what we had just done.

The winner of this challenge would win a brand new Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook.

Beginning the 1st Challenge

So we all trekked the short distance to the London Eye and waited for our private capsule were we would have 30 minutes to complete the task. Oh, and there would be plenty of champagne provided as well!

Nokia Forum Post About Lumia 800 Battery Life, Camera and Audio

There have been lots of comments and discussion around the battery issues on the Nokia Lumia 800, not least of which have taken place on Nokia’s support forums. Now one of their Community Managers has responded.

Nokia-800feature2_thumb_thumb_thumb

This is what was posted on the discussion forum by a Nokia Community Manager:

We have today received this information from the Lumia 800 team regarding this discussion:

“We’ve seen your comments on the latest update for the Lumia 800 and wanted to take the opportunity to quickly address some points.

First of all, the primary target of the latest Lumia 800 update(1600.2483.8106.11500) was to enhance standby time as well as to bring an improvement to the issue reported by some customers in December, that their phone wasn’t able to access the full battery charge capacity correctly. We can confirm that we have successfully tested that those improvements are working. Additionally, we’ve noted your concerns regarding audio and camera settings and are going to address those in a series of future updates, ie. these will not be included in this specific update. It is also important to understand that only the Nokia Update for Lumia 1600.2483.8106.11500 will introduce the mentioned improvements. If you want to see what update you have installed or what software version you currently have on your Lumia 800, please check Settings>System>About and then tap the box for “More information”. The “Firmware revision number” shows 1600.2483.8106.11500 if you have installed the latest Nokia update for Lumia successfully. To make sure that your Lumia 800 is up to date and always gets the latest features, go to Settings > Phone Update and select “Notify me when updates are found”. Then, as soon as a new update is available for your Lumia 800, your phone will automatically display a notification.

Also always use the original Nokia Fast USB Charger AC-16 or the Nokia Charging and Data Cable CA-185CD that came with your Lumia 800, as they are specifically designed to charge the Lumia 800 as efficiently as possible. Only a charger with an output of 1000mA will fully charge your Lumia 800 battery. If you have several Nokia chargers at home, just check the respective labels or plastic parts as the product name is mentioned there.

Last but not least, the Diagnostic App was designed for internal testing purposes. In general, your battery is fine as long as the full charge capacity is more than 1000mAh. For the future, if you are checking your battery life, more useful information on the Battery status can be found by focusing on Settings>System>Battery saver. It will tell you both your remaining battery life in percent as well as the estimated time remaining, plus the time since you last charged your phone (as soon as you have disconnected your phone from your charger). If you have concerns about your battery capacity, please contact Nokia Care (phone numbers and locations can be found via www.nokia.com/support).

Do you have a Lumia 800? What do you think of it?

WHS Add-In Update : iHomeServer for iTunes v2

We first told you about iHomeServer for iTunes back in December, now it has been updated.

iHomeServer_128_thumb

iTunes is fast becoming the centre of many home entertainment systems. iTunes technologies such as Home Sharing and Air Play allow you to keep a centralised media library of music and video and share it with all your other household media devices. For example, you can digitize your music CDs and your DVDs into your iTunes library and then stream them to any your Apple TV, iPad or iPhone. You can even remote control your iTunes installation to push media to several sets of speakers in your house simultaneously using the Apple Remote App. However, all these great features rely on iTunes being up and running.

What is needed is an iTunes Server platform – Enter iHomeServer.

iHomeServer wraps iTunes so you can install and run it on a Windows Home Server, dedicated iTunes workstation or just a spare PC you have lying around. iHomeServer starts iTunes automatically when the computer starts, keeps it running and allows you to manage iTunes without having to physically access the computer, for example via the Windows Home Server Management Console. It also makes it really easy to add new media to your iTunes Media Server.

Version 2 Features

Automatically start iTunes on boot-up

iHomeServer runs an instance of iTunes within its own Windows Service that automatically starts when your computer/server does. Therefore iTunes is always available, even when nobody has logged into the computer.

Runs iTunes on systems with no sound cards

iTunes is meant to be run on a normal desktop. However, today’s microservers are ideal to run as a headless iTunes media server, but most do not come with sound cards. This would normally prevent you from automatically starting iTunes when the computer boots, because iTunes will present a message indicating there is a problem with your audio/video configuration. iHomeServer actively watches the iTunes process for these messages and dismisses them transparently in the background to ensure iTunes starts successfully. You can view any messages that iTunes has presented using the iHomeServer ‘Messages’ window

Manage iTunes from the Windows Home Server Console

iHomeServer supports starting and stopping iTunes from the WHS Dashboard / Console. You can also view and manage all your iTunes media libraries and playlists, directly from the WHS Dashboard – creating and managing iTunes playlists, adding, removing and playing tracks – most of your day to day tasks can be performed remotely from your laptop, but controlling your WHS server’s instance of iTunes.

Create multiple “Watch Folders” to synchronise your iTunes library with your existing media folder structure

One of the issues people face when running iTunes on servers is how to add new media to the server. The last thing you want to do is have to open iTunes manually on the server whenever you need to add a new CD or track downloaded from Amazon.

iHomeServer makes this easy. Create ‘Watch Folders’ that watch areas of your file system (such as the WHS Music and Video shares). Any content already in these folders will automatically be added to your iTunes library. iHomeServer actively monitors these folders so if new media is added, or existing media is modified (eg due to a modification of metadata), iHomeServer will update the track in iTunes transparently. You can even watch network locations or remote storage if your keep your media on another server or NAS.

Edit your iTunes server’s metadata and Cover Art remotely

iHomeServer allows you to view and edit the metadata of tracks stored within the iTunes library running on your server. This can also be done remotely via the Windows Home Server console.

You can even set track Cover Data within your Server iTunes library by copying and pasting from your local PC.

Perform batch metadata and cover art updates

Not only can you update the metadata of individual tracks, you can also use an existing track’s metadata as a template to set a collection of related tracks, just like the iTunes ‘Get Info’ interface, but via the WHS Console.

Automatically delete orphaned tracks

If you delete files directly on your file system, iTunes will keep the track in its library, but when you attempt to play the file, you will get an error indicating that the file no longer exists. iHomeServer can automatically remove deleted tracks from Watch Folder locations so that you have confidence that all your tracks in iTunes exist. You can also ask iHomeServer to perform a complete sweep of an iTunes library to look for orphaned tracks and automatically delete them. These functions are ideal if you reorganise your media folders in order to avoid duplicate files appearing.

iTunes Process Monitoring

In addition to handling iTunes for any pop up dialog boxes that might disrupt your iTunes streaming or prevent iTunes starting up successfully, iHomeServer also monitors the iTunes process and restarts iTunes automatically if it crashes.

Supports all iTunes native functionality – AirPlay, Remote, Wifi Sync, iCloud and Home Sharing

Take advantage of all the major functions within iTunes but benefit from them being ‘always there’ and not having to turn your desktop on first. Wifi Sync, AirPlay, iCloud sync and Home Sharing all work with iHomeServer.

Use the Apple Remote app (for iOS) to remote control your iHomeServer’s iTunes instance and AirPlay your media library to all your favourite devices!

The Apple Remote app for iOS devices is a fantastic partner with an iHomeServer/iTunes microstation allowing you to remote control your server’s iTunes instance and direct media streams to other devices such as Airport Expresses, Apple TV (1 and 2), iPhones, iPads and other AirPlay compatible hardware devices.

Supports WHS v1, WHS 2011, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7

iHomeServer is ideal for use on Windows Home Server v1 and Windows Home Server 2011, however, is compatible with most 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows. Remote access is still supported by running the iHomeServer console application from within a Remote Desktop Connection session.

Quick Thoughts

My initial thoughts when I took the SU8 out of the box was that it was slim, sleek and looked very cool (which is exactly what I said about the CP30). It is very heavy, but then you would expect that given the material it is made out of! Which is what I also said about the CP30, only this is MUCH heavier – but it also contains 4 hard drives as well!

Look out for the full hands-on review this weekend.

Grid Junction 2.0 for WHS 2011 and SBS Essentials 2011 Discontinued

My friend and fellow WHS MVP Alexander Kent has made the hard decision to stop developing his Grid Junction 2.0 add-in.

gj

This is what Alexander said:

After careful consideration we have made the decision to suspend development of Grid Junction 2.0 for the foreseeable future. We have decided not to release the source code or any unfinished versions of Grid Junction 2.0. If you currently have Grid Junction 2.0 beta installed, please uninstall it at your earliest convenience.

This is sad news, however I completely understand where Alexander is coming from. Windows Home Server 2011 has been out now for nearly a year and quite frankly to call it a disappointment is an understatement.

The only hardware that has been released has been from small companies such as Tranquil (ok, the their kit is great, but its not enough) and there hasn’t been any amazing add-ins (worth making you upgrade from V1 which works perfectly well) or any support at all from Microsoft.

In my opinion it is just a matter of time until WHS fades into the sunset, especially now that Windows 8 server has Storage Spaces!

Now obviously I hope I am wrong, but I just cant see a sudden turn around after nearly a year.

What do you think?

Aleratec Announces CFast to SATA Adapter for HDD Duplicators

Aleratec also announced this week the Aleratec CFast to SATA Adapter that makes three of its most popular hard disk drive duplicators compatible with CFast cards.

gI_76309_350120

CFast cards are small mass storage devices. Designed as the successor to Compact Flash memory cards, they offer faster data transfer. About the size of a matchbook, these solid state drives combine the Compact Flash form factor with SATA technology to provide reliable, removable mass storage for portable devices such as cameras and PDAs.

The Aleratec CFast to SATA Adapter makes it possible, using selected Aleratec hard drive duplicators, to duplicate CFast memory cards or to copy from a CFast card to a SATA hard disk or vice versa.

Aleratec hard drive duplicators are an essential tool for building and upgrading computer systems. The Aleratec CFast to SATA Adapter expands the functionality of these already vital tools.

The Aleratec CFast to SATA Adapter is compatible with the following Aleratec hard disk duplicators:

  • 1:5 HDD Copy Cruiser IDE/SATA (Part 350112)
  • 1:1 HDD PortaCruiser (Part 350108)
  • 1:1 HDD Copy Cruiser Mini USB 3.0 SATA Hard Disk Drive Duplicator (Part 350115)
  • 1:3 HDD Copy Dock Duplicator (Part 350117)

The Aleratec CFast to SATA Adapter 2-Pack is available for shipment now with an Estimated Retail Prices (ERP) of $49.99 and is available from Aleratec’s dedicated resellers and distribution partners.

I got to spend some time at CES with Aleratec, and they discussed this product, along with a number of others with me – more on those soon.

Nintendo Announce the Nintendo Network

0

This week, Nintendo have announced the Nintendo Network for the 3DS and the forthcoming Wii U.

40

This is what Nintendo said during the briefing:

As those of you who have enjoyed playing “Mario Kart 7” that we launched late last year should know, its online competition mode includes the system called “Communities.” Each player can create his or her own online “Community” and decide the rules and conditions of the races to be conducted there, and anyone who enters the designated “Community number,” can join to enjoy the matches there. With that system, the company is offering a new kind of network service, which is different from the network services Nintendo has been offering under the name of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

For “Mario Kart 7,” we have already started using as the name of this new network service…

…“Nintendo Network” Service

The Nintendo Network service is our network platform which will cover the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U.

Unlike Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which has been focused upon specific functionalities and concepts, we are aiming to establish a platform where various services available through the network for our consumers shall be connected via Nintendo Network service so that the company can make comprehensive proposals to consumers.

For example, competitions and communication among users, as well as the sales of digital content, will be covered within the Nintendo Network.

For the digital sales of the content, we are also considering the future possibility of digital distribution of packaged software, which is often referred to as “software download sales.” This concept was built into the design of the Nintendo 3DS, and we already have the necessary infrastructure. We will prepare the same infrastructure for the Wii U. However, we have not decided the concrete timing of when we will start it. The decision must be made by taking into consideration such factors as the relationship with the wholesalers and retailers, and the best way to be embraced by consumers, as well as the environment surrounding the market and consumers, such as the required memory capacity on consumers’ SD memory cards. However, as an option for the future, the significance of this business field will increase.

Also for the Wii U, we are planning to introduce a personal account system compatible with Nintendo Network. With this, for example, the ease of using a video game system when the hardware is shared by multiple family members, which has been a challenge we needed to tackle, shall be improved, and we will also be able to construct and offer the system by combining a variety of different services and content.

This looks like it could be rather interesting – more news when we get it.

WHS 2011 and SBS 2011 Essentials Add-in Update: Snoop-de-dupe Version 1.60

Version 1.60 of Snoop-de-dupe has been released for Windows Home Server 2011 and Small Business Server 2011 Essentials.

mainscreen_thumb1

What is Snoop-de-dupe?

Keep your server’s storage space optimized! Snoop-de-dupe will automatically scan your server storage and display duplicate files in an easy-to-view layout directly within the server’s user Console. Once snoop-de-dupe locates duplicate files then you can respond to them as you choose. You can delete the duplicate files, ignore/keep the duplicate files, or replace the duplicate files with a hard-link (available in WHS/SBS 2011 only). You will be in command of your server storage space like never before!

New Features:

• Added search criteria to the Batch Resolve dialog for easier management of large duplicate file sets (i.e. view all duplicate files, view duplicate files located within a select folder, view duplicate files by file name)

• Added a “Reset all duplicate history” feature (More Settings | Reset all duplicate history) to allow for better management of duplicate history

• Added a vertical split-container within the Batch Resolve dialog to allow easier viewing of larger duplicate file sets
