My friend and fellow WHS MVP Alexander Kent has made the hard decision to stop developing his Grid Junction 2.0 add-in.

This is what Alexander said:

After careful consideration we have made the decision to suspend development of Grid Junction 2.0 for the foreseeable future. We have decided not to release the source code or any unfinished versions of Grid Junction 2.0. If you currently have Grid Junction 2.0 beta installed, please uninstall it at your earliest convenience.

This is sad news, however I completely understand where Alexander is coming from. Windows Home Server 2011 has been out now for nearly a year and quite frankly to call it a disappointment is an understatement.

The only hardware that has been released has been from small companies such as Tranquil (ok, the their kit is great, but its not enough) and there hasn’t been any amazing add-ins (worth making you upgrade from V1 which works perfectly well) or any support at all from Microsoft.

In my opinion it is just a matter of time until WHS fades into the sunset, especially now that Windows 8 server has Storage Spaces!

Now obviously I hope I am wrong, but I just cant see a sudden turn around after nearly a year.

What do you think?

  1. “In my opinion it is just a matter of time until WHS fades into the sunset”…. Sadly, it really looks like you’re right on that

  2. I am still working on a new version of AdminiMe as lots of people are still asking for this.
However; one of the things that set me back greatly is that they changed the whole API/SDK. This made me have to rewrite it from the bottom up; and 2y of work for v1 down the drains (well not all, but a lot). That also made them lose a lot of developers/addins!
The same for AutoExit; and as this is in my spare time… the speed of developing isn’t very fast.
I am now in the phase of nearly having a workable prototype!

    Cheers,
    Nick
