Parrot has announced a new, high-density battery for the AR Drone 2.0 quadricopter, which can increase time spent aloft per flight. Read on for details.
Parrot has announced a new, high-density battery for the AR Drone 2.0 quadricopter, which can increase time spent aloft per flight. The current battery is good for about 12 minutes of flight time; the new higher density battery will be 50% more powerful but will fit in the same space, meaning that flight times can increase or flights can include more acrobatic moves in the same time frame. Check out this video that explains the improvement:
Here is a product shot of the new battery:
As soon as this one is available, I’ll let you know as I intend to buy this for my AR Drone 2.0.
Parrot announced the availability of Director Mode in the main piloting app for the AR Drone 2.0, bringing the ability to automatically execute panoramas, crane movements, travelling mode and others, as well as adjust camera features such as white balance and saturation. Read on for details.
Parrot announced the availability of Director Mode in the main piloting app for the AR Drone 2.0, bringing the ability to automatically execute panoramas, crane movements, travelling mode and others, as well as adjust camera features such as white balance and saturation. This greatly improves the professionalism of the videos that you can shoot with the AR Drone 2.0, and with the extra post-production features also added, such as image stabilization, the quality of the videos that you shoot can be taken to the next level. Check out this video introduction to Director Mode:
Here is some more information from Parrot’s Director Mode website.
DIRECTOR MODE
The Director mode lets you program automatic movements for your AR.Drone 2.0 so that you can shoot great 720p HD videos just like a movie director.
As a new feature within the main piloting application (AR.FreeFlight) the Director Mode grants pilots with both an easier and more thorough new way to create amazing videos.
Make your choice among a variety of pre-programmed moves, set the movement speed, adjust optical settings and you are all set. Your AR.Drone 2.0 will move by itself just as you commanded in the cleanest and smoothest fashion.
Finish with the new post-processing options to correct and stabilize even further video shots that will make your movies unforgettable!
Tune camera settings such as white balance, exposure and saturation.
Depending on your environment, on the weather conditions or on the time of the day photographers and video makers often fel the need to adjust their camera optical settings.
This is now possible on the AR.Drone 2.0 thanks to the Director Mode. The flying camera settings menu lets you fine tune exposure, color saturation and white balance or choose from an array of preset to quickly find the setting that will fit your needs.
Choose your move.
As sure as all movie directors need skilled camera operators it is often easier to imagine the shots you’d like to record than actually making them happen. With the Director Mode you will have the best AR.Drone 2.0 camera operator at your service.
The new AR.Drone 2.0 firmware will eliminate all the hick-ups due to wind conditions or sudden stop to deliver the smoothest video you’ll ever shot with an AR.Drone 2.0.
Compose video sequences in real time.
You can stop or take back the control at any time during the automatic moves.
You can also choose to compose a more complex sequence by switching from one move to another or adjusting the speed in real time.
Stabilization system and video post-processing.
Once you’ll have finished recording and can access the video shots through the post processing section to improve even further the final result.
This new section lets you access options to correct and stabilize your videos.
Reprojection will correct the round border effects created by wide angle lens. Your videos will then perfectly blend with videos from other camera using different lenses.
The stability chart lets you see how stable your original video is to suggest either a low, medium, high or very high stabilization correction.
By cropping into the original video and eliminating all the hiccups and glitches you’ll get a perfect smooth and stable shot.
This is welcome news to me; there are many videos that I have shot that could benefit from video stabilization, and automating the shooting of a panorama would be useful. I intend to install this as soon as it is released, so watch this space for my assessment.
Parrot announced a new GPS-enabled USB stick accessory, allowing the AR Drone 2.0 to execute autonomous waypoint-driven flights and to record those flights to an onboard USB stick. Read on for details.
Parrot announced a new GPS-enabled USB stick accessory, allowing the AR Drone 2.0 to execute autonomous waypoint-driven flights and to record those flights to an onboard USB stick. The new Flight Recorder accessory is compatible with MAVLink, an open-sourced communication protocol that allows you to utilize PC/Mac software like QGroundControl to set flight waypoints and download them to your AR Drone 2.0. Plan a flight path in QGroundControl, save it to the Flight Recorder, plug Flight Recorder into your AR Drone 2.0 and watch it fly the waypoints on its own, recording the whole time. The GPS data is added to the in-flight telemetrics already being captured and will be loaded to the Flight Academy once you land and upload your flights. Here is a quick video to explain it:
4GB built-in flash memory to store more than 2 hours of HD video and flight data
Plug and play USB connection
USB RECORD
• 4GB BUILT-IN FLASH MEMORY
The Flight Recorder comes with 4Gb built-in flash memory so that you can store more than 2 hours of HD video in it.
The USB connection ensures that there is no loss of video while you are flying even if out of WiFi range of your smartphone/tablet.
In addition a secondary USB plug lets your extend this flash memory with another USB flash storage device whenever more storage space is required.
• PLUG & PLAY USB CONNECTION
No configuration required. Place the Flight Recorder on top of the battery and secure it with the strap. Then simply connect it to the USB plug of the AR.Drone 2.0 and you’re all set!
CREATE FLIGHT PLANS FOR YOUR AR.DRONE 2.0
The Flight Recorder is compliant with the MAVLink open source communication protocol making it compatible with applications such as QGroundControl. You can either create your flight plans ahead or set them in real time from your PC ground station. You can also take back control at any time by connecting to your AR.Drone 2.0 using AR.FreeFlight like you would normally do. QGroundControl is a free open source Windows, Linux and Mac OS X application that lets you create flight plans. Simply place waypoints in 3 dimensions on a map to create a route that your AR.Drone 2.0 will follow autonomously.
Here are some product shots of the Flight Recorder:
This is a great addition to the Parrot AR Drone 2.0, which I really love to fly. Adding this dimension of autonomous flight, and adding GPS data to the telemetrics already tracked in the Academy, is a very welcome development. As soon as this is available, I’ll let you know (right after I place my order!) and I’ll let you know how well it works.
Buffalo Technology has announced a new cloud access service called Buffalo Link, designed to give you simple, secure access to your data via the cloud. Read on for details.
Buffalo Technology has announced a new cloud access service called Buffalo Link, designed to give you simple, secure access to your data via the cloud. One drawback to remote access and cloud access solutions in the NAS space today is complexity of setup. Many users find the setup process too hard, and want an easy, secure method of accessing data while on the go. Buffalo Tech is rolling out their answer to this problem across all of their new networking devices, starting with the LinkStation 400 series (we told you about those NAS units here). Setup is simple, the connection is secure and your data never leaves your NAS and network until you access it over the internet. Here is how Buffalo describes the service:
BuffaloLink is the easy, secure way to bridge the content in your digital world.
BuffaloLink is a cutting-edge service that consolidates your networked Buffalo devices for easy management and securely connects you to your content even while away from home. Easily access your files remotely – all over the Internet! BuffaloLink is free with supported products and easy to use.
Access to Your Files, Anywhere
Remotely access your files wherever you are over the Internet. BuffaloLink securely connects you to your content without advanced configurations or membership fees. Stream movies and music from your LinkStation NAS at home while vacationing in Honolulu, access that important business presentation from the boardroom and access new family photos to view with friends while traveling across the country.
Simple to Set Up
Setting up BuffaloLink is easy. There are no advanced configurations required, no specialty software to install and no subscription fees to pay. Your connection is secure and your files are safely stored on your Buffalo device on your own network.
Use with Your Mobile Devices
While on the go, access your content and share files from your mobile devices. Support for Apple® and Android smartphones and tablets expands accessibility, making it even easier and more convenient to connect to your content when you need it.
Here are some screen shots of the UI that Buffalo also provided:
The UI looks clean and simple, and it rendered well on the Android and iOS devices that Buffalo demoed for me in the booth. Of course, I can’t comment on how it works in a real-world setting, but it looks like this is a very good start at remote access. Buffalo also indicated that the following enhancements are already in development:
Easy sharing with friends and family
Windows and Mac based integration apps
Whether at home or on the road, have drive letter access
Full device configuration access
One-click access to BitTorrent downloader
This service will ship with the LinkStation 400 units sometime in early 2013; I’ll keep you posted on the availability of those units as soon as I have something to share.
Buffalo Technology announced a new new 1TB/2TB/3TB external hard drive built for speed, integrating a 1GB DDR3 cache to enhance performance. Buffalo claims speed improvements of 350%. Read on for details.
Buffalo Technology announced a new new external hard drive built for speed, integrating a 1GB DDR3 cache to enhance performance. Buffalo claims speed improvements of 350%. The product is called the DriveStation DDR (although they tell me that the name is not finalized and could change) and is expected on shelves in early 2013. Pricing is expected to be HD-GD1.0TU3 – $119 / HD-GD2.0TU3 – $149 / HD-GD3.0TU3 – $189. Here is the DriveStation DDR portion of their announcement:
DriveStation DDR, available in early 2013, is a high performance external USB 3.0 hard drive with a large 1 GB cache for accelerated file transfer speeds:
Utilizes 1 GB DDR3 RAM cache for significant performance enhancements to outperform standard USB 3.0 hard drives by up to 350%
Features attractive, high-gloss chassis that can be placed vertically or horizontally
Available in early 2013 at an estimated street price of $119 for 1 TB (HD-GD1.0U3), $149 for 2 TB (HD-GD2.0U3) and $189 for 3 TB (HD-GD3.0U3)
The performance gain is obtained by adding 1GB of DDR3 to the drive controller PCB board and then caching write and read activity through the DDR3. This has the benefit of providing a buffer and can also allow for fewer, more sustained reads and writes, which should translate into better performance. Anyone who is using an external drive to perform video editing would appreciate the fastest speeds on the market. While in their booth, Buffalo showed me the product performing drive speed testing and I consistently saw reads and writes being significantly better than standard drives. To illustrate, here is a comparison of the DriveStation DDR speeds (on the right side) to a standard external drive without the DDR3 (on the left side). You can see that sequential speeds are roughly doubled, with significant improvement also seen in 512K or smaller file transfers. Of course, once you get into larger file sizes, the speed advantage is smaller.
I’ll keep you posted on availability as this product comes to market.

Blue Microphones announced Nessie, their new adaptive USB microphone for audio recording newbies like me! Read on for details.
Blue Microphones announced Nessie, their new adaptive USB microphone for audio recording newbies like me! Blue Microphones wanted to develop a product aimed at people who are just starting to explore USB based ausio recording, and have introduced Nessie. Nessie automates many of the tasks that newbies find daunting, ensuring that even someone like me with no audio recording experience can obtain good results. Here is the press release:
Blue Microphones Announces Effortless Recording with Nessie, Adaptive USB Microphone
Nessie takes the guesswork out of great recording by applying fundamental recording techniques in real time for instantly polished results
(CES 2013, Las Vegas, NV – January 7, 2013) – Blue Microphones, a leading innovator in microphone technology and design, announces Nessie (www.bluemic.com/Nessie), the solution for fearless recording that instantly delivers studio-enhanced sound for desktop recording of vocals, instruments, voiceovers and more. Nessie adapts in real time, applying professional studio processing, combined with a built-in pop filter and internal shockmount to produce expertly finished sound, without the need for additional mixing or editing.
Nessie’s key features and internal processing are specifically designed to combat the most common pitfalls of recording. The built-in, studio-grade pop filter and shockmount reduce harsh plosives and disruptive rumbling and vibrations, while the adaptive processing, including EQ, de-esser and level control, automatically smoothes and refines your audio in real time. Nessie takes the audio guesswork out of great recording.
“With Nessie, we are excited to introduce fearless recording with a brand new category of digital microphones. In professional recording, there are common practices and fundamental processing used to edit and improve sound quality, but we understand that not everyone has the tools, time or engineering know-how to get the best results. So we built adaptive studio processing into Nessie,” said John Maier, CEO of Blue Microphones. “Nessie was designed to expertly apply the most common techniques instantly, allowing you to concentrate on your performance, not how to record it.”
Nessie employs a single custom-tuned condenser capsule with a cardioid pattern. Nessie’s three flexible recording modes are optimized for richer vocals, more detailed instruments or an option for raw audio for manual post-production editing. Nessie features a zero-latency headphone output for direct monitoring, which is critical for eliminating distracting delay, while headphone volume and instant mute are located directly on the microphone. For optimal positioning, Nessie’s head adjusts with serpentine flexibility. Nessie is plug-and-play compatible via USB with both PC and Mac with driverless installation. For mobile recording, connect to iPad using Apple’s camera adapters (30-pin to USB or Lighting to USB), sold separately.
The idea of building some of the more commonly needed adaptive processing capabilities into a high-quality microphone is an intriguing idea, and hitting the $100 price point means that Nessie will be accessible to a whole new pool of people who are interested in recording. Here is a sound sample that shows how Nessie will work better than other USB microphones.
The Nessie is equipped with a non-mechanical mute button; the mechanical style of mute button sometimes creates audible sounds on the recording. This design does not. In addition, Nessie is equipped with a light that notifies you when your levels are off; the visual cue tells you how to moderate volume and such. A volume control and mode selector (music or vocal) round out the on-mic controls. And with a pop filter and shockmount built right in, Nessie ticks all of the boxes.
