Mountain Climber to Open Locks, Operate Z-Wave Devices From Top of Himalayan Mountain; Kwikset Named as Lead Sponsor of Event

MILPITAS, CA – Shout it from the mountain top: home automation is reaching new heights — 26,906 feet, to be exact.

That’s the height of Cho Oyu, the sixth-highest mountain in the world. And that’s where an amateur mountain climber will demonstrate the home automation capabilities of Z-Wave using a variety of devices powered by Z-Wave technology. By virtue of the remote location, rugged environmental condition, and lack of technical support capabilities, it is being dubbed the “most remote home automation demonstration ever recorded.”

The climb Cho Oyu and the subsequent demonstration — officially titled the “Z-Wave Himalayan Expedition by Kwikset®” — will be performed by named Mariusz Malkowski, a 40-year-old technical services manager at Sigma Designs, a member of the 200-member Z-Wave Alliance. Malkowski has climbed world-class mountains on four continents, many of them by himself. Using no supplemental oxygen, Malkowski is scheduled to begin his ascent on September 10 and will conclude his descent on or around October 6.

Using only his smartphone, Malkowski will control various home automation scenes set up in the Z-Wave booth at the CEDIA Expo in Denver (CEDIA is the leading tradeshow in the residential electronic systems industry). Scenes will include locking and unlocking a Kwikset SmartCode™ Deadbolt Lock with Home Connect™ Technology and adjusting temperature on his Remotec Thermostat, as well as controlling other Z-Wave Devices. The purpose is to show end-users the dependability of Z-Wave technology, as well as highlighting the overall benefits of home automation.

The CEDIA Expo is being held in Denver, CO from September 28-30, 2013. The exact date and time of the demonstration are to be determined, depending on the pace of Malkowski’s ascent. Weather permitting, Malkowski plans to broadcast a live video remote from the mountain summit to the show location so that Expo attendees can watch the demonstration.

Kwikset, the leader in residential security, was named as the lead (Diamond) sponsor of the event. According to Keith Brandon, Kwikset’s Director of Residential Access Solutions, the expedition helps spread the message and benefits of home automation in a visually captivating way that is difficult to duplicate.

Part Two of my QTS 4.0 upgrade article shows the installation of Plex media server on the NAS and gives my overall impressions of QTS 4.0. Plex is a great media streaming service that includes a great interface, easy streaming and really nice meta data. The ARM-based TS-419P+ is not officially supported, but Plex works just fine as long as you can live without transcoding. Here is a brief summary of Plex:

Overview

The Plex Media Server is smart software that makes playing Movies, TV Shows and other media on your computer simple. It’s been designed from the ground up to work automatically in your home network with a variety of devices – like an LG 2011 Netcast TV, Plex Client for Mac OS X, or numerous Mobile Devices like your iPhone, iPad or Android device.

What Does the Plex Media Server do?

It’s easy to watch movie files on a computer monitor. But, what happens when your collection starts to get large? How do you find the show you want to watch easily? How do you know you’ve watched an episode, or where you stopped it last night? How do you share the media files over several screens? What about content from the Internet?

The Plex Media Server solves these problems by gathering information about your media and storing it on a single Mac or Windows PC Server. Connect one or more of the many Plex clients available and your media is instantly available on any of them. The Plex Media Server learns what each movie file actually is and then visits Movie and TV Show websites. It gathers information like plot summaries, posters – even TV Show theme music. This metadata is displayed in the Plex Client so choosing the show to watch a rich and exciting experience. The Plex Media Server also supports plug-ins that let you watch content from the Internet as easily as other media.

Streaming Support

Central to the Plex Media Server is a powerful and cleverly designed transcoding engine. This supports a rich variety of mobile devices, low cost platforms and other possibilities.

What is Transcoding?

Transcoding is the process of converting a media file from one resolution or compression format to another. For example, you might transcode a full 1080p to 720p, or from VC-1 encoding to H.264. The original file is read, then re-saved in the new resolution and codec, possibly in a different file container.

Why is transcoding useful in Plex?

Plex Media Server can ‘stream’ media files to various Plex clients. Some run on powerful computers like Plex for Mac OS X whilst others run on low powered mobile handsets. Some support full 1080p resolutions while others have smaller low resolution screens. Most of the mobile platforms connect over Wifi or 3G networks where streaming full resolution media would choke the network. All in all, it’s extremely difficult to play full resolution media on mobile platforms.

The solution is to transcode the media to a version optimized specifically for the device playing it. Plex Media Server transcodes media on-the-fly and streams the optimized version to the device. This way, a low resolution device is able to play high resolution media smoothly and over it’s wireless network constraints.

Even better, transcoding means that a mobile device can handle a huge range of media file formats, codecs and resolutions. The transcoding process means that the client only ever receives a single format or codec. This is important as many mobile devices have hardware decoders that only handle a single codec. For you, it means that as long as the Plex Media Server supports the codec, so will your mobile device, thanks to transcoding.

Direct Stream and Direct Play

Transcoding media is important for smaller devices like a mobile phone or tablet. There is another class of device that are low-cost but extremely capable players – like the AppleTV. These devices can generally play higher resolution files, but work best with particular codecs. So, if you have a high resolution media fie encoded with the wrong codec, the file will need to be transcoded with the correct codec. The Plex Media Server handles these situations with smart transcoding, Direct Play and Direct Stream.

Direct Play

During the media analysis phase, the Plex Media Server looks at certain attributes of your media (resolution, bitrate, etc.). When a client requests a piece of media, the server looks at the client’s capabilities, compares them to the media parameters, and makes a determination as to whether or not the file can be directly played on the device. For example, if you have a properly prepared MP4 file, it’ll play without any transcoding on an iOS device. Tiny CPU usage, and no loss in quality. If you had a movie in MKV format and also encoded it for mobile devices (and both versions scanned into your library), the media server is smart enough to mark the specific version of the file as playable by the device.

Direct Streaming

Most of these devices support hardware decoding of the H.264 codec, but may not support a particular file format. When a client connects to the Plex Media Server, it describes its capabilities, and if the file falls within the acceptable range, the video is simply copied over to a compatible format (a process known as re-muxing). This again means that there is very little CPU used on the server side, and no loss in quality in the video. Streams start up nearly instantly, and seek quickly.

Smart Transcoding

Transcoding is handled smartly. If you have a media file that is partly compatible with the Client – maybe the video portion is correct but the audio is not – the process is smart enough to only transcode what’s necessary and stream that to the client.

I recently updated my QNAP TS-419P+ to the new QTS 4.0 release, with excellent results. I wanted to see what new goodies QNAP was delivering with 4.0 for myself, so I downloaded the latest version and went to town. Here is the process.

Installation

I tried to execute a live update from the unit, and it failed. No big surprise as I was having stability issues…so I decided to download the file from QNAP’s site and install it manually. Here is the link.

Download the file and then extract the image.

Tell TurboNAS where the QTS file is that you extracted and click UPDATE SYSTEM.

Samsung KNOX and Find My Mobile

Furthermore, the Galaxy Note 3 is equipped with an improved Find My Mobile feature that allows users to disable the phone when it is stolen or lost. With new Scrapbook capabilities, users can easily indicate any interesting content with the S Pen and organise it into individualised scrapbooks, creating a log of discussion points for a future work conversation, a wish list for new clothes or a home redesign project, or a personal favourites list.

S Note has been upgraded with a more intuitive, easy-to-use interface. Users will have access to both note files and notepads, with the ability to use the S Pen to take handwritten notes. With Easy Chart, hand-drawn visualisations of data can be instantly transformed into more formal charts and graphs.

Offering content for enhanced entertainment and creativity

The new Galaxy Note 10.1 will also offer a host of exciting partner content that complements the device’s entertainment, productivity and creativity properties. With premium partner applications and free memberships and services, the new Galaxy Note 10.1 provides everything a user might need in one place. Samsung KNOX, comprehensive mobile security for consumers and enterprise

The new Galaxy Note 10.1 comes with enhanced privacy and security protection provided by Samsung KNOX. Users can activate Samsung KNOX with ease which allows them to run and store security-sensitive applications and data inside a protected execution environment called Container. The security inside the Container is strengthened by system-level protection of Samsung KNOX against malware and phishing attacks as well as hacking attempts on physical devices when devices are stolen or lost. For instance, important personal pictures or video can be stored in the Container with no worries for data leakage due to hacking. In addition, users may choose to store enterprise applications and data such as corporate email, contacts and calendar and allow the IT department to manage the container through EAS (Exchange ActiveSync Server). These features make the Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) an ideal device for BYOD (Bring-Your-Own-Device to work).

Tonight at IFA in Berlin, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Gear, a perfect companion device that further integrates the Samsung Galaxy experience into everyday life. Samsung Galaxy Gear combines smart device connectivity, tailored technological features and stylish design as a single premium accessory.

Samsung Galaxy Gear lets users live in the moment while staying connected to their Samsung Galaxy devices. It notifies users of incoming messages, such as calls, texts, emails and alerts, delivers a preview of those messages and creates the opportunity for users to accept or discreetly ignore those messages. When an incoming message requires more than a quick glance, users can simply pick up their Samsung Galaxy devices and the Smart Relay feature will instantly reveal the full content on the screen.

Voice operation

The built-in speaker allows users to conduct hands-free calls directly from the Gear, maintaining connections to their mobile communications without disrupting their daily routines. For example, a user leaving the grocery store, whose hands are full with shopping bags, could still make a call by speaking into the Galaxy Gear without touching the screen. Users can also draft messages, create new calendar entries, set alarms, and check the weather on the Galaxy Gear with S Voice.

Capture daily life from your wrist

In addition to enabling smart device controls, Samsung Galaxy Gear introduces several features that help users easily capture life’s meaningful moments which otherwise might be missed. With the Memographer feature, a 1.9 Megapixel camera, users who are on the move or participating in physical activities can record both photos and video to create quick, visual records of important information or events from their daily lives, as well as share them on their social networks. Extending the quick-record concept, Voice Memo lets users capture important thoughts or conversations from their wrists and save those voice recordings into texts on their Samsung Galaxy devices.

A growing list of controls for favourite features

With the Galaxy Gear, users gain a wide range of favourite features that further increase the benefits of this new accessory. New security enhancement Auto Lock automatically secures the companion smartphone screen any time that Galaxy Gear is more than 1.5 meters away from the smartphone, and then unlocks the smartphone when the companion devices are near each other again. Find My Device helps users find the location of their smart devices when they have been misplaced by making them beep, illuminate and vibrate. With Samsung Galaxy Gear, users can also control the music played on their Samsung Galaxy devices. As with traditional music players, it helps users browse, play and pause songs even when their smart device is not within reach. Finally, the Galaxy Gear also works like a Pedometer to track physical activity via enhanced, built-in sensor technology. This feature systematically and automatically monitors users so they can track key personal data such as calories burned, steps taken and distance covered.

Standalone watch and iconic fashion accessory

Samsung Galaxy Gear embodies understated elegance. Its refined design, executed in high-quality finishes, conjures images of luxury jewellery while still being understated enough to go well with any outfit. A rounded and simple-flowing form wraps around the body, integrating with the user’s personal environment, and maintaining comfort at all times. The Galaxy Gear also serves as a wristwatch and includes several face options that create the opportunity for users to personalise their watch face. It will come preloaded with 10 different clock options and more choices will be downloadable via Samsung Apps. Call of Duty: Black Ops II Apocalypse marks Treyarch’s fourth and final DLC map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops II, capping-off the year with two all-new Multiplayer Maps, two re-imagined fan-favorite Multiplayer classics, and an alternate-reality Dieselpunk Zombies experience that transports players to the undead-infested trenches of a World War I battlefield.

MULTIPLAYER:

Pod: A failed utopian community from the 70’s has left stacks of dilapidated residential pods nestled into an abandoned cliff side. Its residents long gone, the modernist compound now hosts frenetic combat as players must run atop the pods and navigate their multi-tiered interiors for a strategic edge.

Frost: Fresh snow meets explosive gunpowder in this snow-capped European city, where the bridge over a frozen canal separates it into two sides, requiring players to employ multi-level traversal strategies to outsmart and ultimately outshoot their enemies.

Takeoff: Though marooned in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, this remote launch site is all about the close-quarters combat, combining tight corners with open spaces for combat encounters reminiscent of the multiplayer map “Stadium” from Call of Duty: Black Ops “First Strike.”

Dig: Two archeological dig sites in Afghanistan have unearthed the perfect playground for combatants eager for hectic, unceasing battle, as this re-imagining of the fan-favourite Call of Duty: World at War map “Courtyard” delivers two major chokepoints, a wide open layout, and raised platforms.

ZOMBIES:

With Call of Duty: Black Ops II Apocalypse, Treyarch reveals Origins, the most horrifying and imaginative Zombies experience yet. Players will be deployed to Dieselpunk-stylized World War I-era France where they will encounter the return of the four original heroes from the very first Zombies map, as well as hordes of zombies that have overrun trenches and fields, as well as the ruins of a mysterious and ancient location.

With support for DLNA, the WG-C20 is just like a mini home media server. In Watch Dogs, players will be immersed in a living, breathing and fully connected recreation of Chicago. Players will assume the role of Aiden Pearce, a new type of vigilante who, with the help of his smartphone, will use his ability to hack into Chicago’s central operating system (ctOS) and control almost every element of the city. Aiden will be able to tap into the city’s omnipresent security cameras, download personal information to locate a target, control systems such as traffic lights or public transportation to stop a chase, and more. The city of Chicago is now the ultimate weapon.

Watch Dogs will be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One at launch. The game will be available on November 19 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC.
