The second map, Kharkov is based around the second largest city in the Ukraine which was the site of several major battles in World War II. In this urban multiplayer map up to four players can battle over the ruined city.

Both Rostov and Kharkov will be available for free download on September 24th.

Here is a trailer showing the Rostov map:

Lightning Returns Final Fantasy XIII The Savior Arrives Opening CGI Movie

This epic CGI production by the legendary Visual Works studio of SQUARE ENIX, shows the opening introduction sequence to the forthcoming game LIGHTNING RETURNS: FINAL FANTASY XIII.

lightning_thumb2

The world of Nova Chrysalia has only 13 days until total annihilation, with the citizens of four distinct regions each experiencing the end of the world in unique ways. In Yusnaan, the setting for this sequence, the inhabitants have a hedonistic frame of mind: if the world is going to be destroyed soon then why not go out in style?

Against this background strides Lightning, a legendary warrior on a god-given mission to save the souls of mankind…

The sequence purposefully poses several questions and hooks for players – that will be answered during the rest of the game:

– Why is Lightning called the Savior, but seems to be taking souls?

– Why are those two characters fighting one another?

– How is Lumina linked to the other characters and the situation?

– And more…

So what do you think of Lightning Returns Final Fantasy XIII? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Blackberry Signs LOI to be Acquired

0

Blackberry has signed a letter of intent, agreeing to acquisition terms from Canada’s Fairfax Financial.  Read on for details.

z30

Blackberry has signed a letter of intent, agreeing to acquisition terms from Canada’s Fairfax Financial.  Fairfax is run by V. Prem Watsa, who had also been on the Blackberry board until recently.  Terms are $4.7 billion, or $9 per share, a slight premium over the closing price from Friday.  Cash net of long term debt on Blackberry’s balance sheet is about $2.9 billion, so Fairfax essentially gets Blackberry for $1.8 billion.  Blackberry announced their exit from the consumer smartphone space late last week, along with a write-down related to the Z10 approaching $1 billion.  Fairfax is a Canadian insurance holding company with investments in insurance and re-insurance; turnover is about $8 billion annually.  This is an odd investment for an insurance company to make; clearly, it provides Blackberry with an exit strategy and a place to reassess their future course of action and Fairfax can buy it for next to nothing.  With the failure of the consumer device business and the announcement that they are retrenching towards enterprise customers, it is hard to see how the company can remain independent, and I expect that Fairfax will sell off Blackberry in pieces over the coming quarters in order to recoup their investment and earn a profit.  We’ll keep you posted on developments.  Here is the press release:

BlackBerry Enters into Letter of Intent with Consortium led by Fairfax Financial

  • BlackBerry shareholders would receive U.S. $9 per share in cash
  • Transaction valued at approximately U.S. $4.7 billion
  • Consortium permitted 6 weeks to conduct due diligence
  • BlackBerry entitled to go-shop during due diligence period, subject to payment of a termination fee in the event alternative offer accepted

Waterloo, ON – BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ:BBRY; TSX:BB) today announced it has signed a letter of intent agreement (“LOI”) under which a consortium to be led by Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited (“Fairfax”) has offered to acquire the company subject to due diligence.

The letter of intent contemplates a transaction in which BlackBerry shareholders would receive U.S. $9 in cash for each share of BlackBerry share they hold, in a transaction valued at approximately U.S. $4.7 billion. The consortium would acquire for cash all of the outstanding shares of BlackBerry not held by Fairfax. Fairfax, which owns approximately 10 percent of BlackBerry’s common shares, intends to contribute the shares of BlackBerry it currently holds into the transaction.
The BlackBerry Board of Directors, acting on the recommendation of a special committee of the board of directors (the “Special Committee”), approved the terms of the LOI under which the consortium, which is seeking financing from BofA Merrill Lynch and BMO Capital Markets, would acquire BlackBerry and take the company private subject to a number of conditions, including due diligence, negotiation and execution of a definitive agreement (the “Definitive Agreement”) and customary regulatory approvals.

The Special Committee, chaired by Director Tim Dattels, was formed in August 2013 to review strategic alternatives for the company. J.P. Morgan and Perella Weinberg are acting as financial advisors and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Torys LLP are acting as legal advisors.

Diligence is expected to be complete by November 4, 2013 (“Diligence Period”).  The parties’ intention is to negotiate and execute a definitive transaction agreement by such date.   During such period, BlackBerry is permitted to actively solicit, receive, evaluate and potentially enter into negotiations with parties that offer alternative proposals (“Alternative Transactions”).

If (A) during the Diligence Period (i) BlackBerry enters into any letter of intent or definitive agreement providing for an Alternative Transaction, (ii) BlackBerry ceases to negotiate with the consortium in good faith with a view to entering into the Definitive Agreement by the end of the Diligence Period,  or (iii) an Alternative Transaction is publicly proposed or publicly announced and is consummated within 6 months following the end of the Diligence Period, or (B) during the 3 month period following the end of the Diligence Period, BlackBerry enters into any agreement providing for an Alternative Transaction with a person with whom discussions were held before or during the Diligence Period, then BlackBerry shall pay Fairfax a fee of U.S. $0.30 per BlackBerry share, provided, however, that no such fee shall be payable if the consortium shall have reduced the price offered below U.S. $9.00 per share without the approval of the board of directors of  BlackBerry.  In the event that a definitive agreement is signed with Fairfax the termination fee will increase to U.S. $ 0.50 per share.

Barbara Stymiest, Chair of BlackBerry’s Board of Directors, said: “The Special Committee is seeking the best available outcome for the Company’s constituents, including for shareholders. Importantly, the go-shop process provides an opportunity to determine if there are alternatives superior to the present proposal from the Fairfax consortium.”

Prem Watsa, Chairman and CEO of Fairfax, said: “We believe this transaction will open an exciting new private chapter for BlackBerry, its customers, carriers and employees. We can deliver immediate value to shareholders, while we continue the execution of a long-term strategy in a private company with a focus on delivering superior and secure enterprise solutions to BlackBerry customers around the world.”

In addition to the consortium and its lenders being satisfied with all aspects of the due diligence to be carried out by them during the Diligence Period and the negotiation and execution of a binding definitive agreement approved by the board of BlackBerry, completion of the transaction will be subject to other customary conditions, including receipt of required regulatory approvals.  There can be no assurance that due diligence will be satisfactory, that financing will be obtained, that a definitive agreement will be entered into or that the transaction will be consummated.

BDT & Company, LLC, BofA Merrill Lynch and BMO Capital Markets are acting as financial advisors, and Shearman & Sterling LLP and McCarthy Tétrault LLP are acting as legal advisors to Fairfax in connection with the transaction.

Review of Grand Theft Auto V From Rockstar Games

It’s been over five years since the release of GTA IV, critically acclaimed to be one of the greatest games of all time. Now, on the same generation of consoles, rises it’s successor, promising a larger map, more customizability and more shenanigans. Can Rockstar pull off the improbable and surpass it’s predecessor as the greatest open world game of our time?

Gone is the simple, one protagonist approach to open world games, Rockstar have instead opted for three unique characters, each able to be switched up on the fly. First up is Franklin, a street hood with grand aspirations of making a change in the world. Stifled by living with his Auntie; his ambition choked due to no real opportunities, Franklin is constantly looking for a way out. Perhaps Michael can help? A retired criminal living the presumed highlife, a large house, expensive cars and lounging by his swimming pool does little to cloud his inner turmoil. Looking peachy on the outside, it’s quickly realised that this is a place where Michael does not belong, his unravelling family and mysterious past also point clues towards his pent up, stressed demeanour. Enter Trevor, the obligatory nut job whom has had past dealings with Michael; met later on, you’ll discover the conflicting feelings of which contribute to his all encompassing dark side.

Characterisation is paramount in a GTA game, it’s the narrative and throwaway personalities Rockstar creates that make for such an engaging time. Meeting the characters for the first time will create a surround of ambivalence for the player. Not instantly dislikeable, but somewhere between anti-hero’s and criminals probably sums it up. The endearing, forever gangster archetype of Franklin is the most relatable in terms of previous games in the series. Whereas Trevor comes across, rightfully so, as a deranged psychotic madman with strong ideals in loyalty and a careless attitude to the wellbeing of himself, and more importantly, the others around him. Along the way, you will indubitably come across many other, larger than life characters serving as main mission carries or just random encounters on the streets.

The humour is back; not in the slightly subtle way of GTA IV either, simple pedestrians will often hurl you a comment should you upset them, radio shows are full of gleefully unnecessary topics and pretty much the name of any company is a satirical pun upon it’s real life counterpart. Of course the crowning jewel in Grand Theft Auto games are the characters, the situations and the circumstantial occurrences of what only an open world game can provide. Trevor the Canadian nutter is always a source of raw entertainment due to the switching player mechanic. At any point in free-roam you may swap to a different character and depending on the time passed, you’ll often get an insight into what that character got up to in the mean time. With Michael, it could be dropping his daughter off shopping, whilst Franklin may be stuffing his face. It’s never that simple with Trevor however. At one point after switching to him, I caught him on a beach, in a dress, starting a fight with five bodybuilders. A fight I had to finish I might add.

Getting back to a revitalised San Andreas and exploring it in glorious HD is one of the main draws here. Promising to be the largest open world Rockstar have ever built is also a tasty prospect. The map is probably the star of the show yet, if anything is a little underutilised. There are numerous well detailed and visually arresting areas of the map that missions never require you to go anywhere near. A prison with an instant wanted level, a hydro dam, military base and many others are all largely ignored for some reason. Streets are well populated with varied character models, voices and personalities. Workers will perform tasks related to their job roles and the usual activities such as hitchhiking or hanging out are performed with visual accuracy. New animations like weightlifting, relaxing on balconies and dog walking all add to the already substantiated look and feel of the world.

Missions often involve the standardised formula of driving to a place, performing the requisite task followed by driving home again. It’s not quite so black and white this time around however with the new heists lending variation in spades. Preparation is where most of the fun is at, selecting which approach you should go for, be it loud and dangerous or quiet and stealthy can change the preceding missions rather a lot. Some will involve stealing specific vehicles and modifying them, whilst others may incorporate scoping the place out. Being by far the most engaging and rewarding missions on the game, it’s a little bit of a shame to note that there isn’t a large amount of them to play. Sure you can replay them like most missions on the game, but it’s not quite the same the second time through.

Much like the Ballad of Gay Tony, GTA V has a ranking system after each mission with different criteria to match to get the top medal. You can’t see the often cryptic checkboxes until you’ve completed the mission at least once, making it not ruin your first playthrough by doing something you wouldn’t normally attempt, which is nice. Leaderboards track your progress against your friends, giving you a little extra to strive for when in your ‘completionist mode’.

Police and the wanted system have been altered up for this one too, cops operate on a line of sight mechanic now instead of the ‘big blue circle’ approach meaning you can lose them in alleyways and under bridges. The downside being that there is some occasional spider-sense going on at times and they will miraculously know who and where you are instantaneously. Unfortunately, there is also little use in all five stars as, if you do fancy going on a little rampage, you’ll be dead long before you can evade them.

RPG-lite mechanics are also integrated, but to a lesser extent than in San Andreas. Stamina can be increased to a literally infinitesimal amount, whilst driving, flying and using special powers can also be improved via doing the associated tasks. The only issue being that your health, increased via levelling up the strength stat, even in post game, never amounts to anything near what you had in previous games. Even after completing all quests, you can still be killed in two shots, leading to some occasionally flummoxing insta-deaths.

The radio stations are back with hilarious dialogue and obscenely famous tracks to drive too fast to. An odd design choice being the lack of a true metal radio station such as every other GTA title has had. Classic rock and punk is catered for amply, but no metal? Voice work is exemplary as usual; characters sound believable in both their accents and actual script-work. Combined with some of the best graphics of this generation creates a truly immersive experience.

Money can be a tight experience at times, very little money is earned throughout, save for the few heists that pay big. Money is best earned from the stock markets, yet without clear guidance upon investments, combined with the inability to replay missions for monetary gains could potentially lead to a duff save file.

Some small oversights and a frustratingly low amount of health at post game casts a slight shadow upon the countless, enormously impressive details that all make up for one of the greatest games you’ll ever play. Again.

Review of FIFA 14 from EA Sports

Are you a fan of FIFA? Well it’s that time of year again so here is our review of FIFA 14 from EA Sports.

untitled

The generally recognised rule says ‘if it’s not broken don’t try to fix it.’ It’s a dilemma, then, when you have the greatest simulation of football ever created to best. Perhaps this is a challenge made all the more difficult when you consider FIFA 13 is widely accepted to be the most feature complete game in the history of the franchise. AFC Wimbledon V Chelsea, then.

You’ll be glad to hear that the challenge has been tackled head-on, and in almost every area, succeeds in redefining your expectations from a sports title, and delivers something exceptional.

FIFA 13 was brilliant. The culmination of three years development on the latest FIFA engine, featuring such advancements as the impact engine, greater variety in formations, split defences and the rise to prominence of quick inverse wingers. But therein lay the problem, and a source of absolute disdain for serious football thinkers, and those that dreamed of an online experience that rivalled the spectacle of Super Sunday. All you needed to win, was a quick winger on either side, and a striker capable of shooting from 20 yards. Thankfully, that’s a trait left behind in a game that feels like real football, where every player knows their limits, and only the true geniuses stand out from the crowd.

fifa14_ps3_protecting_the_ball_wm

In pure football terms, FIFA 14 is so much more the thinking man’s game, where formations make a difference, as do the smallest of changes to player commands. Substitutions can give you the edge in the dying minutes, and the ‘B’ button doesn’t spawn an instant yellow card from the pocket of the referee. It’s about rhythm and tempo.

Keeping the ball is easy in and around your penalty area, but with the addition of protecting the ball, and momentum in both players and the ball itself, controlling the middle third of the pitch is a key to success. When the modern game is played predominantly near the centre circle, EA Canada has replicated the importance of this zone with striking accuracy. Lose the ball because you didn’t receive it properly, and your opponent can counter attack with pace. The difference this year, over last, is that your defenders don’t feel like they’re on pre-determined trajectories, and moving forward and back to cover positions, compressing the lines to intercept, while out of position players move to decrease the angles of available passes. The result, is one of the only complaints about last years title is immediately resolved. That’s not to say you won’t be able to play as Bayern Munich and replicate their quick attacking style, but it’s a lot more difficult.

Of course, the most popular mode in FIFA, is ultimate team, essentially, a free-to-play title given away as part of the greater premium product. It’s a money machine for Electronic Arts, and it’s no wonder there’s a big emphasis on the addition of chemistry cards. Addictive doesn’t really do the mode justice, but applying chemistry cards to your central midfielder so he stays back and protects the back four, while you send your two remaining midfielders forward to support the attack is going to make online ultimate team matches a thing of beauty. Within reason, you could replicate Chelsea’s Champions League triumph, putting everyone behind the ball, protecting the goal, while sending only three players forward on counter attacks. It could be the biggest shake up to the auction house since the mode made its début. Instead of searching for the player with the right skills, you can now apply cards to make your players adjust to your gameplan. Chemistry cards are a brilliant addition, but beware – give yourself a budget for FIFA points, because we can see these cards doing serious numbers online.

The other major overhaul, comes in the shape of the Global Transfer Network in manager mode. As the mode I play more than any other, it’s a double edged sword. Firstly, it makes the time between transfer windows more enjoyable, as replicating the real world scenario of scouting and re-scouting players to find the one that fits your system is sublime. Working months in advance, and waiting for the window to open and pounce once again shows that real world systems work in-game, while missing out on targets means you always have a backup. It’s a revelation designed to keep you playing, and make the time between matches an integral part of the process.

The downside to this addition, is that in generates email after email from scouts saying “Four more players found in France,” or ‘now information on short-listed player’. However much it adds to the game play with systems, it takes begins to frustrate, especially when you search terms for scouts are quite broad.

That said, you don’t actually have to read your emails, but it checks with you to make sure you want to delete every email individually. A ‘delete all’ would be highly advised when the first game update rolls around.

I could sit here and name the new stadia included for the first time, or the fact that my team, the magnificent Liverpool are now a partner, and all its players are reproduced digitally to an exceptional standard. I could tell you about how each mode gives you so many more hours of game play than the average game, but the underlying question is all you need ask: is this the best football game available today? Yes. Without a doubt, FIFA 14 is incredible, and despite a spirited effort from this years PES, FIFA 14 overloads the midfield, breaks forward and blasts the ball into the roof of the net.
