Amazon has launched its virtual currency Amazon Coins in the US. The company has given all registered Kindle Fire users 500 free coins – worth $5 – to buy games, apps and in-app purchases.
Amazon said it has added “tens of millions of dollars” in Amazon Coins to the accounts of eligible Kindle Fire customers, who will be sent an email notification.
Customers will receive a discount if they buy the currency – which was teased by Amazon back in February – in bulk.
The retailer hopes Coins will attract app developers to its platform and increase revenues in that area.
“We will continue to add more ways to earn and spend Coins on a wider range of content and activities – today is Day One for Coins,” Mike George, VP of games and apps at Amazon, said in a statement.
