Another Good Reason to Install Windows Home Server Power Pack 3 Beta Now

-

I am currently working away on a new book about netbooks and Windows 7.

I got a new netbook today, the Toshiba NB200 and it comes pre-installed with Windows 7 Starter Edition, which as it would seem, will be the case for about 70% of netbooks.

I decided that I should backup the new netbook to my Windows Home Server before playing around on it, and imagine my surprise when I tried to install the Windows Home Server connector software only to receive the following message:

“You cannot install Windows Home Server Connector on a Windows Starter Edition”

Have no fear, I installed the Windows Home Server Power Pack 3 beta on my production Windows Home Server, and voila, it installs and works perfectly.

So, if you have a desperate need today to backup a Windows 7 Starter Edition netbook or PC, get the Power Pack 3 beta and run it!

Power Pack 3 should be out soon – so watch this space for more news.

  1. I have an early version of an HP. i never see updates in the update screen. Is this not available on all models or do you have to force it somehow.

    • Rick, Power Pack 3 is not vendor specific, and as mentioned in the article, and the three linked posts its only in beta and hasnt been officially released yet.

When it is you will see it via your console, if you have automatic updates enabled, otherwise you will have to download and install it manually.

  2. Nice find Andrew! I seen a post in the forums about someone having this very problem. Since I had upgraded my new little Samsung N130 to 7 Home before I tried to back it up. I didn't give it much thought figuring it was the upgrade to 7 Home was why I got my netbook to connect and back up to my home WHS. Now I know it is because my WHS has PP3 beta installed. Who knew?

  3. Thanks Andrew! I had just posted this exact issue in the forums section of your site the day before you posted this article. Fortunately, I had downloaded PP3 beta a couple of weeks ago, but haven't had the time to install it. I guess I'll be making the time in the near future. Thanks for all the info you post on your site. It's been extremely helpful since I gut my Windows Home server.

  4. Has anyone had any problems with it waking their Windows 7 starter netbook from hibernate or sleep to do automatic backups? I can do manual backups and automatic backups when the netbook is up and running, but if I put it into sleep or hibernate, it doesn't wake the netbook to do the automatic backup.

    Thanks,

    Bryan

  5. How would I install the WHS Connector software on a Windows 2000 Server? Is that possible? I've tried it and no luck thus far. Thanks!
