A Closer Look

Final Thoughts
Out of the box, the Monarch Pro feels dense in a good way. It’s built from a 5-layer construction, a shock-resistant core, a polycarbonate shear plate, and an impact-resistant rubber surround, all wrapped around a Signature Armor Frame. Mine came in the carbon fiber finish, though there’s also a perforated vegan leather option if you want something softer to the touch. Either way, it doesn’t feel like a case that’s just going to look tired after a month of use.
Fitting the phone into it took about ten seconds. The cutouts line up exactly where they should for the buttons, ports, and cameras, and the buttons themselves are oversized and satisfyingly clicky, no more fumbling for the volume rocker through a mushy layer of rubber.
This is where the case actually earns its keep. UAG rates the Monarch Pro for drops up to 25 ft. (7.6 meters), tested to 5X MIL-SPEC 810G-516.6 standards, which is well beyond what most of us will ever put a phone through. The screen and camera bumps sit slightly raised above the glass, so if you set the phone face down on a rough surface, the screen isn’t what takes the hit. I tested a couple of drops onto concrete just to see, and the phone came away without a mark.
The edges have a contoured, anti-slip grip too, so the case doesn’t just protect against drops, it helps prevent them in the first place. That’s a small thing, but it makes a real difference when you’re holding the phone one-handed on a crowded train.
MagSafe works exactly as it should, chargers and accessories snap into place with no wobble, and Apple Pay taps through without any hesitation. That’s not always guaranteed with cases this heavily built, so it’s a relief that UAG got it right. There are also small anchor points along the frame for a lanyard, which isn’t included but is a nice option if you want to add one.
Living with it day to day, the case doesn’t feel like it’s fighting against you. Pockets are fine, wireless charging pads work, and it doesn’t add so much bulk that the phone stops feeling like a phone.
The UAG Monarch Pro isn’t the cheapest case out there at £64.00, and it isn’t the thinnest either. But if you want serious drop protection without giving up MagSafe, decent button feel, or a case you’re not embarrassed to be seen with, it’s one of the better rugged options for the iPhone 17 Pro Max right now. Mine’s staying on.
