Take a look at the short video below to see the DS411slim and also adding a hard drive.
Preparing the DS411slim
Once you connected the DS411slim to your network and to the power, and put at least one hard drive it, it’s time to install the software on your computer and prepare the DS411slim for use.
Take a look at the video below to show this in action.
Using the DS411slim
Now that the DS411slim is installed, you can use it for whatever purpose you like. All you need do is follow the steps in the DSM 3 software depending on what you want to install.
Take a look at the video below for some examples.
Final Thoughts
As usual Synology have done a really good job with the DS411slim. It is small, light weight, looks like it should be on your desk and is actually fairly quiet!
Because it comes with the DSM 3 software it is packed full of features and applications that should satisfy most people, and it is really simple to use and configure. You can even connect USB speakers to the DS411slim and play music using the Audio Station application. And I really liked the power-saving function so you don’t have to worry about wasting power!
If you want a small box working for you delivering everything you could want, I can’t recommend the DS411slim enough.
The DS411slim should be available around the middle of February and whilst the pricing has not yet been announced, I would guess it would be under the $400 mark.
You can learn more from the Synology website.
UPDATE: The DS411slim has a RRP of £187.46 + vat

Looks like a nifty little unit. The Synology DSM Software really impressed me and I do get the benefits of using 2.5" HDD — just that 2.5" disks are considerably more expensive when compared to the 3.5" variants.
im loving the DS411slim NAS Box but with only 4 x 1TB drives 4TB max, thats a bad thing, with drive size ever increasing and more demand for storage space, this unit has it's limits. and to me its over before it has begun,
Are you limited to the 9.5MM 2.5" drives or can you leverage the larger 12.5MM drives(current 1TB 2.5" drives are all 12.5MM high)?
Yes the larger drives do fit.
I currently have 4 WD Scorpio blue in it and they fit perfect.
