Some of our readers have been in touch to say that they are no longer able to get the HP MediaSmart Server 3.0 update disks.
Back in February we had information on the update, but it seems that HP have now stopped selling it.
Our first hint came from Kyle who emailed saying “I called up HP and they don’t sell the 3.0 upgrade anymore.”
We Got Served is also reporting the same thing.
Have you ordered recently or are you able to still get yours?

Why would they stop? Was it set up originally as a limited time offer?
thats a good question – no word from HP other than to say that they are not selling it anymore when you try to buy it!
And no, it was not a limited time offer that I am aware of!
Probably stopped because there were to many problems. Even though HP recommended you upgrade the memory in the EX47x/8x, running Video Collection brought the machines to there knees. The best is to upgrade the CPU which is not for the novice and then HP would have those issues to deal with also. Even so, the Media Collection software is buggy and will fail after a few times. Then there's the whole TwonkyMedia issues, see patch 1/2/3 and still not resolved. Shipping this product to Canada comes out to $60 cdn that's a chunk of money for buggy but nice looking software. Phew, I said it all. 🙂
Version 3.0 worked well with my single core EX485 and pretty much the same with the dual core CPU you and I installed a few months ago. No real performance difference during non-Twonky times.
Too bad they are stopping it. I will make sure I keep my disks.
I went through this yesterday with HP. Apparantly there are no more CD to ship. I find it sad that HP is not being loyal to the early supporters of the Media Smart servers.
After about 8 hours of searching and complaining to HP, I finally spoke to someone who is trying to convince me that the 3.0 upgrade won't give me any benefit anyways outside of cooler interface.
Is that true? I went and upgraded the RAM and was about to look into the processor upgrade.
It's disturbing to me that I spent all this money on the EX470 and I have a glorified file server in return.
Hi Domenic
There isnt even a MediaSmart team at HP anymore – they have all moved over to the WebOS team.
Personally I would go with the 3.0 update, just because it was the latest one, however considering you cant get it anymore there really isnt any choice but to stay on what you have, and if it is working fine for you then it should continue to do so.
