Post Vail Windows Home Server Installation
The installation was easy and straight forward. There were no issues with my system and no driver related problems with my three year old Dell PowerEdge SC440.
The total time for installation was 38 minutes and I was extremely impressed with how easy the set up process was. Thank you Microsoft for making this installation a success.
Quick Fix Engineering (QFE)
Microsoft had a hotfix ready for the Vail Refresh release. Download it and run it prior to copying your test data.
Directly from Microsoft:
This QFE addresses an issue where saving files to a server shared folder may fail with a time-out or sharing violation error when a large amount of data, typically more than 1TB, is present on the server. After you install the server software, and before you copy any data to the server’s folders, download and install QFE KB2314472.
Remote Access
I copied over my test data and ran the connector software on a couple of the PCs in the garage. The Remote Web Access was up and running immediately. Check back with our site for the videos on the set up procedures for Vail after installation!
Windows Updates
I guess I am a little surprised that there were already 31 updates needed. I assume they are all security updates?
Conclusion
This Vail installation was SUPER EASY. The media interface works great and the new backup features rock! It is a beta so I look forward to the coming months to see the bugs fixed and the new features develop.
I hope you get a chance to do the clean installation and try out Windows Home Server code name Vail Beta Refresh!
See you next Friday night,
Timothy Daleo

Nice job, thanks for sharing.
Will it be possible to migrate backups from the current version of WHS to Vail when it is eventually released?
I have backups of laptops I no longer physically have and would like to be able to access the files from time to time.
Unfortunately, Vail backups are not compatible with v1 and vice versa.
