Review: The Golf Club

Due to the mysterious absence of a flagship golf title for the PS4, HB Studios could well accomplish what many smaller studios cannot; breaking into the heavily defended sports game market. Teeing off against the big hitters directly could potentially spell disaster, yet with the fortunate break in the market, can ‘The Golf Club’ fill the void?

As far as simulations go, the competition has never really fulfilled its promise. Being able to alter the ball’s trajectory mid-flight has always seemed like an unnecessary aid; the changing of clothes giving stat increases has bewildered too. That sort of thing is nowhere to be seen here, and with it, comes both benefits and drawbacks.

The gameplay itself is one of the crowning factors; despite it using the tried and tested formula of swinging the right thumbstick, it can be punishing yet rewarding. With a general lack of tutorial, you’ll find the first few games potentially frustrating; however sticking with it will yield better results eventually. Much like the real life version, practice makes perfect and you’ll (mostly) stop fluffing each and every shot. Accuracy with the right thumbstick is paramount and even a slight skew will alter your stroke. If you think that’s a little rough however, you’re in for a world of pain when it comes to putting.

Even though the generic elevation overlay is present to give you an idea of which way to angle your putt, there are no other indications of how your shot will pan out. You must manually gauge the power and finesse; yet without any feedback (other than the onscreen results) you’ll often not know exactly what you did wrong. Whilst this may put some people off, I believe it works in its favour; striving for the pursuit of perfection in golf is surely the initial draw anyway.

Aside from the gameplay, there are also several other greatly notable features present too, namely the highly touted course creation tools. Due to the lack of any official pre-made courses, when you’ve had your fill of the excellent selection on offer, you can try your hand at creating your own. The versatility of the creator can be quite staggering, it can let you procedurally create an all new course in just a few steps. Choosing the general backdrops, tree densities and adding exotic background paraphernalia is simple and works well for what many people will desire. But it also caters for those seeking true customisation too. Individual tiles can be altered, even if it is a little fiddly, yet it does mean that you can create whatever you fancy and share it online for others to play.

Much akin to the Autolog system in the Need for Speed games, Golf Club also incorporates similar social aspects. Updating you with small objectives and tasks helps give you something to strive for if you’re so inclined. And that’s a good job too considering the general lack of content and progression on offer.

Whereas other games in the genre might have some light RPG elements to give a sense of development, The Golf Club sacrifices these in the hope that the feeling of genuinely getting better at the game will be reward enough. Similarly, as other games often incorporate a career mode of sorts, once again, Golf Club feels sorely lacking. With only three game modes on offer, you’ll generally have to make do with creating your own objectives to keep the sense of longevity alive.

In terms of presentation, The Golf Club won’t be the most jaw dropping game on your PS4, but it’s by no means a bad looking game; the Alpine backdrop in particular looks predominantly eye catching. The tiled menu system feels modern and crisp and the load times are often impressive too, a slight downer being the commentator’s occasionally uninterested demeanour.

For a digital only title, Golf Club can often be impressive, the simple yet rewardingly difficult gameplay demands mastery. The course creator and its combined social features recompense creativity, even if, great user created courses can easily be lost in the ether due to the lack of a trending system. The lack of a career mode stings almost as much as the occlusion of tutorials for the many sections that demand them too. However, for those craving a next gen golfing experience, you could worse than take a tour of The Golf Club.

Review: Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel Super Heroes

This year Disney’s is back with a super hero powered triple blow, after last year’s model it did have a few flaws in the game design. But with other games from the so called toys to life, but those games can’t match Disney Infinity’s Toy Box mode, which gave players scope to sculpt their own worlds, then turn them into playable adventures to share or just use them for yourself.

This year with the second version of Disney Infinity has been revised and stronger gameplay but its killer blow comes with the content. No longer reliant just on Disney and Pixar properties, it now features The Avengers, Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy, giving Disney Infinity not just some of the biggest names in comic-books and movies, but the nearest thing to the licensed game of this year’s biggest family-friendly blockbuster movie.

Design

Up to a point, this approach works incredibly well, and the Marvel Super Heroes starter pack makes for an impressive bundle. Inside you’ll find the new USB Power Base, new figures of Iron Man, Black Widow and Thor, plus a clear Avengers playset piece based on Tony Stark’s Manhattan HQ. You’ll also find two Power Discs, which replace the playset piece and unlock additional mini games (more on these later in the review).

Owners of the first Disney Infinity product might spot something immediately. In Disney Infinity only characters tied in to a specific franchise could play in that franchise’s campaign, which meant that – with only one character from each franchise in the box you needed to buy additional figures for co-op play. Now, however, we get three Avengers in the pack, so co-op play now comes, as they say, in the box.

Gameplay

There are many things that Disney Infinity 2.0 nails in the Avengers campaign, and that includes the spirit and style of the three bundled heroes. Partly it’s a question of good character design and voice work, Each cartoon Avenger looks and feels spot-on, and while only Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury has the original actor’s voice, the stand in cast on the Avengers play set does a great job of filling in.

More importantly, each character has the moves and the abilities you’d expect. Iron Man fights with a combination of fists and repulsor rays, while Thor batters his way through enemies with his mighty hammer. Mjolnir returns when thrown, just as it should, and even smashes any foes hapless enough to be standing in the way. Black Widow, meanwhile, has the acrobatic and martial arts skills to deserve her deadly name.

Despite first appearances, flying is included. It might seem that Iron Man and Thor can only hover, but squeeze the left trigger and they’ll fly off into the screen, speeding through the streets of Manhattan until they slam into anything big – usually the ground. At least in Disney Infinity 2.0 obeys the first and most important law of any superhero game; your protagonists feel like proper superheroes.

What’s more, their powers get stronger as the game goes on. Villains smashed and missions completed mean experience. Experience equals levels, and levels give you skill points to distribute. With these you can buy spectacular and devastating special attacks or upgrade the attacks you have already, making each of Earth’s mightiest heroes that little bit mightier. The combat has a nice flow from the start, but the introduction of the special attack gauge and special attacks adds just a hint of strategy, and it can be incredibly satisfying to fire off a volley of rockets or a lightning strike on a bunch of Ice Giants on their way to do you harm.

Marvel’s fantasy Manhattan makes a bigger and more exciting open world than any of the playsets in the original Infinity, and the plot, which sees Loki causing chaos with fiendish TV-headed villain Modok and a bunch of ice giants, is more engaging too. The core gameplay is stronger and more polished, and all that upgrading gives you a little extra payback as you play.

It’s a bigger open world, but not really any more convincing. We get traffic and pedestrians, but no real interactions with them, and the area is bound by artificial limits, so that you don’t have to fly too far before the screen fades and you’re returned to a central point.

More seriously, there’s just not enough imagination on display. Nearly everything you do involves fighting ice giants, with just the odd drone thrown in for good measure. The ice giants come in several different flavours, but master a few tactics and you’ll thrash them all. The most challenging missions are (sigh) the escort missions, where the difficulty comes in making sure that whomever or whatever you’re protecting doesn’t get smashed up while you’re battling on. Those exuberant superpowers ensure the action never gets boring, but a little more invention and variety would have made for a vastly superior game.

That’s a problem in a game which unlike its predecessor doesn’t have two more playset campaigns to entertain you. Instead, we get two smaller-scale mini-games; one a Guardians of the Galaxy-themed Diablo clone set in the notorious Kyln prison, and the other an Agardian-take on Tower Defence, where you set up turrets and traps to halt a steady stream of ice giants while tackling any stragglers yourself. Both are fun for a while, while proving how versatile Infinity 2.0’s creative tools can be. Neither, however, is a serious replacement for a lengthy, well-paced and interesting campaign.

To get one of those, you’ll have to splash out some more money, and at £30 for the Spider-Man or Guardians of the Galaxy playsets (both including just two figures) they don’t come cheap. On the plus side, figures are no longer quite so segregated into discrete franchises. Collect tokens hidden in the city and you can introduce Rocket Racoon or Nova into your Avengers adventure.

Disney Infinity 2.0’s real staying power is in the same place as the first edition’s  the Toy Box mode. You can still lose hours building sandbox worlds to mess around in, placing buildings and objects where you like, putting roads together, dropping vehicles on the roads and driving around. You can scatter enemies into the world and beat them up, or construct your own landscapes, buildings and weird Marvel meets Monsters U theme parks. And if you’re patient and prepared to get your head around Infinity’s mechanisms and logic controllers, you can still turn a toybox into a game, which might be anything from a 2D platformer to a 3D space shoot-em-up.

Same as in the first edition of Disney Infinity, you’ll need to unlock many of the various elements in the playset then purchase them in Toy Box mode, using Infinity’s currency: blue sparks. This time, however, you’re choices aren’t randomised, so you can buy whatever unlocked content you want as soon as you can afford it.

In the Toy Box mode in the game, while you could produce something incredible, there was a steep learning curve between the basic building, sculpting and dropping-in stuff, and the more complex background logic stuff that had to be in place before it all worked. In a good way, you were learning how to program stuff, and while the game did its best to simplify, it didn’t do a great job of explaining how everything worked.

In Disney Infinity 2.0 has features to take some of the hard work off you, including little helpers who can generate cities, racing tracks or forests while you watch, or templates which give you some basic game mechanisms in one pop. All the same, there’s still a lot of trial and error and confusion involved in producing more sophisticated efforts, and it’s one area where there’s still room for improved tutorials and clear advice.

Yet for all that, Toy Box mode is brilliant, giving kids a place where they can create something cool, and bring in whatever figures they want to. It’s also now complemented by a Hall of Super Heroes, where you can admire your various heroes and their upgrades, and by a new INterior feature, where players can build and furnish a home and receive cute little visitors, some of whom might have tasks to complete.

Review: Arrow Season 2 Blu-Ray Box Set

Arrow shot his way into our lives back in Season 1 which aired in 2012 that took the comic fans by storm.

DC’s comic book hero The Green Arrow had a great successful run with its dark action adventure series filled with vengeance and explosions. Now that season 2 is over and available on Blu-Ray you can relive the events from the masked vigilante’s life that introduces new foes and strengthens previous friendships. Season 1 introduced us to the hooded Arrow and the important people surrounding him including his small team, controversial family, endangered loved ones and a list of foes out to corrupt the city.

Season 2 follows the previously spoiled billionaire playboy Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) who presumably died when his father’s boat was lost at sea and was trapped on an island which he returned from a changed man. The focus now after cleaning up the streets of Starling City is to continue stopping criminals without killing them, a promised he made to his dying best friend. Oliver must also contend with the outside forces attempting to take over Queen Consolidated all whilst dealing with characters returning who we all thought were dead. As the web of mystery deepens around the Arrow’s true identity Oliver finds himself revealing yet again his secret to protect others and take down criminals trying to destroy the city.

With the return of many actors from season 1 and introducing some more talent in season 2, Arrow features the great cast of Stephen Amell (The Flash, New Girl) as the lead vigilante; Katie Cassidy (Gossip Girl, Monte Carlo, A Nightmare on Elm Street) as Laurel Lance the attorney and former girlfriend of Oliver; David Ramsey (Blue Bloods, The Defenders, Outlaw) as John Diggle, Oliver’s partner, confidant and bodyguard; Willa Holland (Tiger Eyes, Straw Dogs, Chasing 3000) who plays Oliver’s younger sister; Paul Blackthorne (The River, CSI) playing the detective; Emily Bett Rickards (Dakota’s Summer, Romeo Killer, Bacon and Eggs) who brings Felicity Smoak to life as the IT technician at Queen Consolidated; Colton Hayes (Teen Wolf, Look, The Gates) who plays crook turned sidekick Roy Harper, and Colin Donnell (Pan Am), Oliver’s best friend.

Everything that was average from the first season is improved drastically in the second. The fact that Oliver’s training had made him come across as a character we couldn’t relate to and cold hearted through his killing is reigned in and given more heart this time round. He came across previously as a perfected killing machine leaving me speechless from the first episode and I longed for Oliver to show he was still human which came about towards the end of season one. Also the fact that the playboy carefree façade wasn’t Amell’s best work in the show, mostly due to these scenes contrasting dramatically with the Oliver we now know, I’m happy to say that both these points are vastly improved. With the Slade and Oliver flashback story from the island still continuing as the secondary parallel tale of Arrow, we get to see how this brothers in arms friendship takes a turn for the worst back in current day Starling City.

As friendships disintegrate over bloodshed Oliver makes new allegiances and expands his vigilante crew to take on new foes such a Blood’s team, a group of Slade’s subordinates that pose as the main villains for a majority of season 2. And lets not forget that Barry Allen is introduced midway through the season that’ll eventually play The Flash in his own series let alone crossovers with the Arrow show once again.

The special features from Arrow Season 2 includes; Deleted Scenes from various episodes which can be accessed separate to the episodes across the box set disks; From Vigilante to Hero which is a 25 minute documentary featuring various executive producers and cast members talking about Oliver Queen’s evolution in season one where he was a vigilante to season two where he came to embrace the idea of being a true hero for Starling City; How Did They Do That? which shows the visual effects made for the arrows; Wirework: The Impossible Moves of Arrow that show off the training and stunts within the show, and Arrow 2013 Comic-Con Panel where the cast and team talk to the audience about creating the show.

This box set is a must for any Arrow fans out there and is beautifully presented and is bursting with extra content. I have to say I’m a bigger fan of this season which has improved on many areas from the first season and I’m really excited to see where the next chapter takes us.

Assassins Creed Unity Season Pass Goes to the East

Today Ubisoft has announced what the Season pass detailed content for this years Assassin’s Creed Unity. With additional in-game missions & equipment items, discover an all new story campaign with Assassin’s Creed Unity Dead Kings.

Assassins Unity is out for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and PC on 14th November in the UK.

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, which is a brand new downloadable game for Season Pass holders. Apparently spawned from a single sketch of 16th century China, this soon became something bigger. You play as Shao Jun (from Assassins Creed Revelations/Embers), and traverse a 2.5D world inspired by traditional brush paintings.

The additional content also includes an extra DLC mission called Dead Kings and the promise of  “more missions, weapons and customisation options”.

  • Assassin’s Creed Unity Dead Kings – a new story campaign that takes place after the events of Assassin’s Creed Unity. Arno leaves Paris for Saint Denis, a troubled city with a mysterious and extensive underground that holds the crypts of deceased French kings. In this self-contained set of missions, players will explore the murky depths of the Basilica and fight merciless adversaries to uncover the darkest secrets of the city. Arno will equip the new Guillotine gun, a deadly explosive weapon for short and long range combat. In addition to the main missions, players will discover new open-world activities including treasure hunts, murder mysteries and contracts, as well as new co-op missions. Additional weapons, gear, skills and outfits can be unlocked and carried over to the main game.
  • Extend Arno’s journey in Paris with more missions, weapons and customisation options for players looking to further explore Assassin’s Creed Unity and the French Revolution. Players can upgrade their customised Master Assassin and take on three added missions. Additionally, players will get over 30 new weapons, equipment, and outfits, including the exclusive Fleur de Lys sword on launch day.
  • Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China – a new standalone Assassin’s Creed experience delivering a new story, setting, and gameplay type. In this 2.5D reimagining of the celebrated franchise, and  developed by Climax Studios, players will perform parkour on the Great Wall of China, kill from the shadows and take the leap of faith. For the first time ever, players will be transported to the Middle Kingdom in the 16th century, where the last remaining Assassin of the Chinese Brotherhood has returned to her homeland. Players will be immersed in a vibrant setting, inspired by traditional brush paintings and Chinese architecture from a pivotal, historic time period in one of the greatest civilizations in history. Hell-bent on revenge, Shao Jun will use the skills she learned under legendary Assassin Ezio Auditore to exact vengeance. Players will be able to rely on stealth to accomplish their mission, as well as Shao Jun’s martial arts training and all-new Assassin gear.

Dark Souls 2 DLC Crown of the Ivory King delayed

Bandai Namco today announced today that Dark Souls 2 downloadable add-on Crown of the Ivory King has been delayed until the 30th September on Steam and the Xbox Live Marketplace and 1st October for the PlayStation Network. The DLC was due out on 24th September so only delayed for less than a week.

Taking place between the events of Halo 4 and Halo 5: Guardians, Halo: Nightfall follows the origin story of legendary manhunter Jameson Locke (Mike Colter) and his team as they are caught in a horrific terrorist attack while investigating terrorist activity on the distant colony world of Sedra.

The Halo Channel will be available on Xbox One and Windows 8.1 devices on Nov. 11, 2014, and a version for Windows Phone 8.1 will be made available shortly after. Project CARS Exclusive Interview with Oliver Webb at Brands Hatch

At a recent event for Project CARS held at the iconic Brands Hatch race track, I had the opportunity to talk with professional race car driver Oliver Webb.

Skylanders Trap Team – An exclusive interview with Alex Ness (The Chompy Mage) from Toys For Bob

Alex Ness is a writer at Toys for Bob working on Skylanders and I sat down with him at their studio in San Francisco to talk about the story and voices – he does a lot of them, including the Chompy Mage and Broccoli Guy!

The Chompy Mage is a well loved villain and for those of you who don’t know much about him, here is his bio:

Believe it or not, the Chompy Mage actually hatched from inside a Chompy Pod. At least that is how his Chompy hand puppet tells the story. Having been raised by Chompies, it is no surprise that the old magician is a little strange. He simply grew up embracing the Chompy way – believing that Skylands would be a better place if everyone was a Chompy – an illegal enchantment which he has actually tried to perform on several occasions. It was this kind of magic that led to him to be locked up inside Cloudcracker Prison, where he met the other Doom Raiders. Of course, they all thought he was completely crazy, but the Chompy Mage can see through the eyes of any Chompy in Skylands – and having a few billion little spies can come in handy when trying to enact revenge on the Skylanders. Plus, he could secure the Chompy vote for any sort of political elections that followed.

Skylanders is redefining the Toys-to-Life phenomenon with yet another ground-breaking innovation, Skylanders Trap Team. With Skylanders Trap Team, players can take characters out of the game and place them into physical “Traps” that kids can take with them, effectively bringing Life to Toys.

Skylanders Trap Team will be released October 10th for the Nintendo Wii, Wii U and 3DS, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and various tablets including the iPad, Android tablets and the Kindle Fire HDX.

Paul Reiche is the studio president at Toys for Bob working on Skylanders and I sat down with him at their studio in San Francisco.

Paul Reiche III is the President and Co-founder of Toys for Bob, an Activision studio and occasional Tiki bar in Novato, California.

Toys For Bob was formed in 1988 by Reiche Reiche and Fred Ford, best known for being the co-creators of the cult-classic Star Control series.  Before their partnership, both Reiche and Ford attended UC Berkeley while working on games; /Ford programming early Japanese computers and Reiche working with TSR Hobbies on D&D(R) and co-designing Archon 1 & 2 and Mail Order Monsters on the Atari-800 and Commodore 64 home computers.
