Watch the March preview update video below showing off the screenshot option.

Screenshots

New in preview is a highly requested feature by our community from the Xbox feedback site. While playing a game, you can now take screenshots on your Xbox One console by simply double-tapping the Xbox button on your controller to capture a screenshot and pressing Y to save the screenshot. You can also say “Xbox Take a Screenshot” to take and save a screenshot.

The Upload app is being updated so that you can manage your screenshots in addition to your game clips. You can use a screenshot as your background, by viewing the screenshot in full-screen mode from the Upload app, then, press the Menu button and select Set as background. In coming preview builds, you will be able to use Upload to share screenshots to your activity feed, attach to messages, add screenshots to your showcase, and eventually share to Twitter. Also, your screenshots will be visible in your profile alongside your game clips. In the initial preview build, the sharing functions are not yet enabled, but you can start capturing screenshots and using them for your backgrounds.

Suggested friends

With the suggested friends feature, the Friends area in home and your friends list will help you find and add friends. Suggested friends will include people you might know, so you add more friends to game with, and top community broadcasters and clip creators, so you can get more great content in your activity feed. We’re also adding a new suggested friends page to the Friends area.

Sharing your name

This month in preview, we’re rolling out two new ways to share your real name; with all of your friends or to everyone in the Xbox Live community. You can also continue to share your real name with select friends, or with no one, if that’s what you prefer. Gamertags are still the primary method of identifying yourself on Xbox Live, but sharing your real name helps people recognize you who might not know you by your gamertag. The new name sharing options can be found under Friends > My profile > Name sharing settings.

Tile transparency

We continue to listen to your feedback and are adding a setting to enable you to vary the level of transparency for your background images, go to Settings > My Xbox > Tile transparency.

Privacy and online safety settings

We added a new setting for sharing voice search data to create an option for you to allow collection and analysis of voice data when using Xbox – Bing to search. You can go to Settings > Privacy and online safety > Share voice search data to change the setting.

Report spam

The Messages app has an added option to allow you to notify Xbox when you receive spam. You can now select a specific message, press the A button and then select Report > Spam to report a specific message as spam.

Tom Hanks and more in ‘Inferno’ movie

Director/producer Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer have cast some of the world’s most talented and interesting rising international stars to join Tom Hanks in Inferno, the new film in Columbia Pictures’ Robert Langdon series, which has taken in more than $1.2 billion worldwide to date.

Tom Hanks

The Imagine Entertainment production, which has a screenplay by David Koepp based on the book by Dan Brown, is slated for release on 14th October, 2016 and will begin principal photography at the end of April.  The project’s executive producers are Dan Brown, Anna Culp, Bill Connor, and David Householter.

Inferno continues the Harvard symbologist’s adventures on screen: when Robert Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he teams up with Sienna Brooks, a doctor he hopes will help him recover his memories and prevent a madman from releasing a global plague connected to Dante’s “Inferno.”

Felicity Jones, an Oscar nominee this year for her performance in The Theory of Everything, will star opposite Hanks as Dr. Sienna Brooks.  Irrfan Khan, one of India’s biggest stars, best known for his roles in Slumdog Millionaire, Life of Pi, and The Lunchbox, takes the role of Harry Sims, also known as The Provost.  French actor Omar Sy, best known for his work in the French mega-hit The Intouchables, as well as X-Men: Days of Future Past, the upcoming Jurassic World, and John Wells’ upcoming untitled project, will play Christoph Bruder.  Sidse Babett Knudsen, star of the Danish television series “Borgen,” will portray Dr. Elizabeth Sinskey, the head of the World Health Organization.  The filmmakers are also in talks with several other internationally recognized actors for major roles.

Commenting on the announcement, Howard said, “For this film, I wanted Tom Hanks to be surrounded by an international cast of actors whose energy will underscore Robert Langdon’s life-or-death peril, the high-stakes action he takes, and the global threat that he’s trying to prevent.  Felicity, Irrfan, Omar, and Sidse have all broken through with recognition here in America as well as their home countries – they are phenomenal talents and we can’t wait to get started.”

“We’re thrilled to be making a third Robert Langdon film with Ron, Tom and Brian,” said Doug Belgrad, president, Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group.  “Inferno will deliver all of the excitement, intrigue and international adventure that audiences expect from a film based on Dan Brown’s huge selling Langdon book series. We can’t wait to see this character back on the big screen.”

Michael De Luca and Andrea Giannetti will oversee the project for Columbia Pictures.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Today it was announced that the production has commenced on location in Australia on Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ epic comedy adventure “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” directed by Espen Sandberg & Joachim Rønning (“Kon-Tiki”), the fifth entry in the blockbuster franchise inspired by the classic Disney Theme Parks attraction, which has reaped $3.7 billion in worldwide box office. “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” will film entirely at Village Roadshow Studios and on locations within Queensland, Australia.

Johnny Depp returns to his iconic, Academy Award-nominated role of Captain Jack Sparrow, one of the most beloved characters in motion picture history, newly joined by Oscar® winner Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men,” “Skyfall”), rising young stars Kaya Scodelario (“The Maze Runner,” British television’s “Skins”) and Brenton Thwaites (“Maleficent,” “The Giver”) and Golshifteh Farahani (“The Patience Stone,” “Exodus: Gods and Kings”). Rejoining the action are Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, Kevin R. McNally as Joshamee Gibbs and Stephen Graham as Scrum.

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him.  Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas

“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and written by Jeff Nathanson (“Catch Me If You Can,” “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”). The executive producers are Chad Oman, Joe Caracciolo, Jr. and Brigham Taylor.

Joining Bruckheimer, Sandberg & Rønning for the swashbuckling new voyage is a first-tier group of award-winning behind-the-scenes artists—many of them new to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” family—including director of photography Paul Cameron (“Gone in Sixty Seconds,” “Déjà Vu,” “Collateral”), production designer Nigel Phelps (“Pearl Harbor,” “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” “World War Z”), costume designer Penny Rose (all four “Pirates of the Caribbean” films), visual effects supervisor Gary Brozenich (“The Lone Ranger,” “Edge of Tomorrow”), Oscar®-winning special effects production consultant John Frazier (nine Jerry Bruckheimer films and dozens of others) and special effects supervisor Dan Oliver (“Mad Max: Fury Road,” “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”), supervising stunt coordinator R.A. Rondell (“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1”) and stunt coordinators Thomas Robinson Harper (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”) and Kyle Gardiner (“San Andreas,” “Kingsman: The Secret Service”), Academy Award®-winning makeup and hair designer Peter Swords King (“The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies, “Into the Woods”) and film editors Joel Cox ( “Unforgiven,” “Million Dollar Baby,” “American Sniper”) and Gary D. Roach (“American Sniper”).

The filmmaking team of Sandberg & Rønning directed “Kon-Tiki,” the critically acclaimed story of famed explorer Thor Heyerdahl, which was nominated for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film from their native Norway. Following their work as award-winning commercial and music video directors, Rønning and Sandberg directed the World War II action drama “Max Manus: Man of War” before taking on “Kon-Tiki.” Most recently Rønning and Sandberg served as executive producers and directed the first two episodes of Netflix’s big-scale mini-series “Marco Polo,” which they filmed on exotic locations in Malaysia, Kazakhstan and Venice. A second season was recently announced for “Marco Polo,” with Rønning and Sandberg continuing on as executive producers.

First in partnership with Don Simpson, and then as the chief of Jerry Bruckheimer Films, Bruckheimer has produced an unprecedented string of worldwide smashes, impacting not only the motion picture and television industries, but mass culture as well. His film and television productions have been honored with numerous awards and nominations, including six Academy Awards®. In addition to his prolific television credits, Bruckheimer’s films include “Top Gun,” “Beverly Hills Cop,” “American Gigolo,” “Flashdance,” “Bad Boys,” “The Rock,” “Armageddon,” “Remember the Titans,” “Pearl Harbor,” “Black Hawk Down,” “National Treasure,” “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,” “The Lone Ranger” and “Deliver Us From Evil.” He is the producer of all four previous “Pirates of the Caribbean” films.

Review: Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix

Walt Disney and Final Fantasy are, to some, a fairly intriguing culmination, yet to others, it’s a series of games that has amassed a large cult following. After my personal disappointment with the previous PS3 entry, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix, (mainly due to its archaic combat system and unresponsive camera) I entered the world of the sequels hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

For those who’ve played the HD 1.5 Remix, things will feel instantly familiar. Much like the previous PS3 outing, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix includes two re-mastered entries in the series: Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, previously on PS2, and Birth by Sleep Final Mix from the PSP. To round it all off, there’s also a cinematic version of the Nintendo DS’ Kingdom Hearts Re: Coded too.

In battle, effects and characters can look quite good

Kingdom Hearts II is the obvious draw here for both those who’ve already played the original and those new to the spiralling plot saga of the series. Following in the same vein as the original Kingdom Hearts, the sequel (and the accompanied spinoffs) all combine to produce the bewilderingly convoluted plot arch. Fixating, for the most part on Sora, you’ll experience the usual trek across a multitude of Disney films, along with a healthy dose of classic Square Enix characters on the way.

Much like other games of the era, progression can be slow at the start, particularly so for an action RPG; combat suffering the most. With moves unlocked via advancement, the starting couple of hours can feel a little cumbersome. Without a dedicated block or dodge ability, the first dozen or so battles can resemble a scene out of Benny Hill, with monsters chasing you in circles whilst you futilely attempt to avoid their attacks. As the game opens up however, more and more abilities become unlocked making it a much more viable and enjoyable experience. Much like the combat woes at the beginning, the story starts a little slowly too, mainly due to the jarring sections where you control Roxas for the first few hours. As if the plot were not ripped to shreds enough via being explained not only over three games, but sent further afar by also being on three different platforms. Keeping up interest in the relationship between Roxas and Sora still feels a little too much like a chore even after the somewhat disappointing conclusion.

At least in this way; the other portions of the overall package seem to make a little more sense, mainly in terms of both backstory and character progression. Whilst Kingdom Hearts II’s main story does do a decent enough job of fleshing out the main characters, there are still questions left unanswered; thankfully the other two games do a solid job of filling in the gaps.

Is black and white in HD oxymoronic?

Birth by Sleep (Final Mix) is another HD remake in a similar fashion from that of the HD 1.5 Remix. Having been originally developed for the PSP, there will inevitably be the immediate graphical downgrade that unfortunately is immediately noticeable. Despite this however, it’s clear to see that this entry has garnered a lot of love from the developers. The entire game has been fully re-mastered in HD and has received a bit of spit and polish in other areas too. A noticeable inclusion being the addition of a right thumbstick to control the camera with, something that will please many of those who came from the PSP version. Aside from the extra available buttons making the game entirely more playable, other changes are also present from the Japanese version. Extra bosses, new Keyblades and bonus scenes are all present in the ‘Final Mix’ version meaning more content all round.

Re: Coded is another additional extra following in the same vein as 358/2 Days from the previous collection. Much like its doppelganger, the tale unfolds in one long series of cutscenes with zero player interaction whatsoever. Whilst it may well have had a good old visual tweaking alongside its extra scenes, it’s certainly still the weakest portion of the group; despite its intentions of being a narratively focused expositional piece. The unfortunate truth is that the Kingdom Hearts saga is already so utterly convoluted with unnecessary filler and twists that the small revelations you do witness near the end of this three hour long ‘movie’, are simply not worth it and are likely only of interest to the most hardcore of fans.

1400c336e462a166af7cd38dfce760dc
Guess which one we’ll be playing as?

As far as the gameplay holds up, it’ll all feel familiar to those who’ve delved into the series before. The extra thumbstick support on Birth by Sleep will be reason enough for many to jump straight in, but ultimately, it’s the graphical upgrades that are the selling point here. Inevitably, the newer the title and the more advanced the hardware it was developed on is, the better the game tends to look. Yet despite there being no true wow moments, each game does follow a distinct art style that holds up rather well. The environments can be a little lacking in Birth by Sleep, along with Terra’s rather disinterested voice acting, but aside from that, the visual upgrades will appeal to fans and newcomers alike.

Kingdom Hearts II will, understandably, be the main reason for buying the collection, and rightly so too. It’s simply a better game than the others and due to its popularity; it will likely have been played by more people too. For the less devout, the opportunity to play the myriad of other games that were released on the multitude of various consoles for the first time can only be a bonus too. If you weren’t an enormous fan of the originals, there’s only so much a lick of paint can alter your disposition by, and you won’t find anything drastically new here to draw you in either. If on the other hand, you are one of the many people that enjoyed fond memories of them; this Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix is the definitive way to enjoy the coming together of these titanic licences.

Review: Samurai Warriors 4

0

The Warriors series has never really been something that catches my imagination. Even between Dynasty and Samurai flavours the ability to run around slaying a ridiculous amount of enemies has never been enough to excite me. Don’t get me wrong, taking on wave after wave of nameless foes has it’s appeal but I always feel like Samurai (and Dynasty) Warriors chucks everything else out the window to make room. There’s only so much button mashing I can take and that’s one thing you can guarantee a Samurai Warrior title will have enough of.

1

In fact on my very first outing I was presented with a good few hundred enemies that made no attempt at all to fight me or even a vague sense that they would evade my attacks. Sure they ran towards me but all I had to do was press the same button over and over as I watched the combo numbers climb. On occasion I moved the thumbstick to orient my character but literally no extra effort is required. The very second I realised the tides of slightly animated scarecrows posed no threat at all I was bored. But I pushed through to get onto bigger and greater things.

But it just never happens. There really isn’t anything just around the corner. Missions play out as a series of you pressing the same button until you win. On occasion you might find the need to press a different button to do a special attack but more often than not I just used them to break the tedium. Bosses play out as little more than slightly challenging versions of their straw counterparts, especially early game.

There are combos and abilities that make it worth while levelling and thinking about a character to an extent but without more complicated gameplay the only reason to do so is from self motivation. There is definitely a place for it but I constantly had the thought in the back of my head that it was all pointless. Truth be told there is a combo system and character variations for those who look for them but for me the combat is too simplistic to warrant any real investment.

2

On the face of it there seems to be plenty of missions in Samurai Warriors too. There is a campaign for each of the 50 or so characters which is impressive and does provide loads to do. At least in terms of time spent on the game. The problem is that they’re all largely the same. A ridiculous pop-up will appear for each character and explain what’s happening while characters talk mindlessly during your combat. There’s nothing even close to depth in the story and each campaign soon follows the path of the combat and becomes mindless.

It’s fine to have this amount of content, in fact it’s commendable, but it’s not enough to stretch gameplay out just for the sake of it. If there’s little there to start with dragging out the same repetitive gameplay really isn’t likely to add much to a game. The main problem I had was that despite the amount of content I was bored well before the gameplay had run out.

Chronicles mode allows you to make you’re own character with a modest set of customization tools. There is a more persistent upgrading system in chronicles and on your travels you will have the opportunity to equip yourself with better equipment. However I still wasn’t thrilled by the missions. It’s certainly more engaging knowing that you have your own character but ultimately the gameplay still failed to engage me. Soon I was back to playing the same mission repeatedly.

3

The visuals are nothing special although there’s nothing particularly awful either. Characters are well detailed and look respectable even though they don’t hold up too well on closer inspection. For me Samurai Warriors’ biggest sin are the environments. There’s a decent amount of colour splashed about but the quality of the textures is low, although HD, and often areas aren’t interesting enough to capture the imagination. Samurai Warriors 4 certainly doesn’t look bad but it’s a long way from looking good.

Samurai Warriors 4 has this absolute reliance on quantity over quality. Rather than a complicated combat system that allows for some skill or character investment there are thousands of enemies. Which would be cool if there was actually something to do other than pressing the same button over and over again. Chronicles mode adds some customization and makes missions a little more interesting until you realise you’re again just pointlessly wading through enemy after enemy.

As an incremental update there isn’t much on offer that improves over other Warriors games. Even the visual updates aren’t really significant enough to convince veterans to return and the multi-format release has done nothing to help. There isn’t enough to get new players or people who didn’t like previous titles involved. Ultimately I found Samurai Warriors looked poor and was just plain boring. For me that’s the worst thing a game can be.

The critcally acclaimed blockbuster has now passed Beauty and the Beast to take a super-sized $521m at the global box office.
