After what was really a rather dull start to The Game Awards 2019, Xbox went and blew the roof off the event by surprising everyone by revealing their next generation console, codenamed Scarlett, will be known as ‘Xbox Series X’:
With a design that looks more like a PC Tower then the conventional consoles, the Xbox Series X looks amazing especially when the first game announced was Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice 2!
I do not think anyone outside Xbox expected Microsoft to reveal their next gen console at these awards, but Phil Spencer himself took to the stage and oh boy…will this be getting people talking heading into holiday 2020 when the console is set to release.
In a post by Phil Spencer on Xbox Wire, Head of all things Xbox said:
“For eighteen years and three console generations, the Xbox community has shown us the power both games and fun can have on all of us. As we enter a new generation of gaming, we see a future where you’re instantly absorbed in your games – where worlds are even more lifelike, immersive, responsive and surprising – and where you are at the center of your gaming experience. With the new Xbox Series X, we will realize that vision.
Xbox Series X will be our fastest, most powerful console ever and set a new bar for performance, speed and compatibility, allowing you to bring your gaming legacy, thousands of games from three generations and more forward with you. Its industrial design enables us to deliver four times the processing power of Xbox One X in the most quiet and efficient way, something that is critically important in delivering truly immersive gameplay. We also designed Xbox Series X to support both vertical and horizontal orientation. It’s bold and unique, very much like our fans around the world and the team of collaborators and innovators who built it.
The name Xbox is an expression of our deep history in gaming, our team’s unrelenting passion, and our commitment to both our fans and the future of gaming at Microsoft. It also signifies our belief that a gaming console should be for just that – gaming.
Alongside Xbox Series X, we also unveiled the new Xbox Wireless Controller. Its size and shape have been refined to accommodate an even wider range of people, and it also features a new Share button to make capturing screenshots and game clips simple and an advanced d-pad derived from the Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller. The new Xbox Wireless Controller will be compatible with Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs, and will be included with every Xbox Series X.
The possibilities of what Xbox Series X enables developers to achieve was also brought to life this evening with the unveiling of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II. A sequel to the award-winning Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice from world-renowned developers Ninja Theory, the game is being built to leverage the full power of Xbox Series X. The footage shared tonight was captured in-engine and reflects the power of Xbox Series X available to developers to deliver new universes, experiences and games in ways you have never imagined.
From a technical standpoint, this will manifest as world-class visuals in 4K at 60FPS, with possibility of up to 120FPS, including support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and 8K capability. Powered by our custom-designed processor leveraging the latest Zen 2 and next generation RDNA architecture from our partners at AMD, Xbox Series X will deliver hardware accelerated ray tracing and a new level of performance never before seen in a console. Additionally, our patented Variable Rate Shading (VRS) technology will allow developers to get even more out of the Xbox Series X GPU and our next-generation SSD will virtually eliminate load times and bring players into their gaming worlds faster than ever before.
We are minimizing latency by leveraging technology such as Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and giving developers new functionality like Dynamic Latency Input (DLI) to make Xbox Series X the most responsive console ever. Xbox Series X is also designed for a future in the cloud, with unique capabilities built into the hardware and software to make it as easy as possible to bring great games to both console and elsewhere. Xbox Series X will deliver a level of fidelity and immersion unlike anything that’s been achieved in previous console generations.”
Over to you PlayStation!

With PlayStation withdrawing from gaming events like E3 and especially not holding their usual end of the year PlayStation Experience, the only real “news” to come direct from PlayStation this year has really just come from their take on the Nintendo Direct style date drops. Today Tuesday December 10th, we have another one and with only a couple of days until the annual Game Awards, this is a bit of a surprise to be having. But, below you will find the news and trailers from this pre-recorded briefing:

Spellbreak is then announced, this online MMORPG coming to PS4 in 2020, no doubt a response to titles landing on Xbox One first such as Black Desert.

PlayStation 25th Anniversary is celebrated next as Ken Kutargari has a special message for fans.
State of Play comes to close with something PlayStation fans have been crying out for all year, an update and new look at PlayStation exclusive ‘Ghosts of Tsushima’, but alas…no release date just a to be continued…but more will be shown at the Game Awards on Thursday.
Well that was actually quite good I thought, the focus on release dates for titles fans have been waiting for this year, a couple of reveals which were interesting but ‘Ghosts of Tsushima’, perhaps the biggest game fans have been waiting to hear more about has been at least teased as having its release date announced at The Game Awards on Thursday. Overall, just safe and nothing hugely big news really but some release dates for titles announced in 2018 and finally landing in 2020.
Now eyes turn to The Game Awards to see if PlayStation has anything else to reveal!

2K has announced the founding of Cloud Chamber, the newest, wholly owned game development studio under the Company’s publishing label. A collective of storytellers eager to push the frontlines of interactive entertainment by making unique, entertaining and thoughtful experiences that engage the world, Cloud Chamber will build its team at two locations: 2K’s San Francisco Bay Area headquarters in Novato, Calif, as well as in Montréal, Québec, which marks the first-ever Canadian office for a 2K studio. In addition, 2K announced that Cloud Chamber has started to work on the next iteration of the globally acclaimed BioShock franchise, which will be in development for the next several years. “As we continue growing our product portfolio, we remain inspired by opportunities to invest further in our valuable IP, great people and their collective, long-term potential,” said David Ismailer, President of 2K. “BioShock is one of the most beloved, critically praised and highest-rated franchises of the last console generation. We can’t wait to see where its powerful narrative and iconic, first-person shooter gameplay head in the future with our new studio team at Cloud Chamber leading the charge.”
A 22-year industry veteran with more than 40 games shipped to date, Kelley Gilmore will serve as Cloud Chamber’s Global Studio Head and be the first woman in 2K history to launch and lead a development studio. Her wealth of experience transcends executive production, marketing direction and public relations management, including nearly two decades of service to another of 2K’s wholly owned studios, Firaxis Games, on franchises such as Sid Meier’s Civilization and XCOM. Her role is based in Novato.

We are a deeply experienced group of game makers, including many responsible for BioShock’s principal creation, advancement and longstanding notoriety, and honored to be part of the 2K family as stewards of this iconic franchise.”
Gilmore has tapped Ken Schachter to be Cloud Chamber’s Studio Manager in Montréal. An executive with extensive experience in development, production, technology and creative roles, Schachter will also be an ambassador for both the studio and 2K in establishing a significant Company presence in Montréal. Cloud Chamber’s decision to open a new office in Montréal was supported by the Gouvernement du Québec and Montréal International.
Cloud Chamber will join the Company’s family of wholly owned development teams, including Visual Concepts, Firaxis Games, Hangar 13, Cat Daddy Games and 2K Silicon Valley.
