Review: Aetheris

Aetheris is providing me with a solid New Year’s Resolution: get better at strategy games. Even discounting the haze of Christmas alcohol that’s hung over me the past week, I was pretty rubbish at Aetheris. Though to be fair, it didn’t pull any punches either. It’s one of those games where a wrong move can come back to bite you with a vengeance. Every time I maneuvered one of my little lizard friends into the wrong position, I did feel a wrench in the heart.

Then they’d get bonked on the head or savaged by a giant bird and my flimsy house of cards would start to fall down. For fans of strategic combat, this is one to keep an eye on. Presuming you have a keener eye than me, that is. Fans of roguelites, however, might have more pause for thought. Aetheris presents itself very well but it has a cluster of issues that suggest to me that its different parts aren’t all gelling together.

Aetheris - A lizard picks up an accessory

Lizard Wizards

The most striking thing about Aetheris is the artstyle. If I had to describe it in a word, I would put it down as ‘papercraft’. It has that style of movement where everything wiggles back and forth like you’ve stuck those little split pins in everything. Watching your lizard friends march along is like a bizarre puppet theatre, especially when combined with the fantastically colourful backgrounds. Everything’s bright and colourful, actually. Bright primary colours everywhere. It’s a delight to watch; like someone has just gone mad with a colouring book. I love it.

It’s a little at odds with the gloomy storyline though. It’s the usual affair. A world of happy, little lizards gets turned upside down when the world cracks open, spewing forth a black mass. To investigate the corruption, four adventurers sally forth to meet it. I’d love to tell you that they solve it all at the end, but I never got that far. Still, Aetheris is more about the journey. Each little event reveals a bit more about the different types of lizards that live there and what horrible ends they’ve met. Lots of suspicious, tribal lizards and black ooze pushing its way through scales. There’s more depth to the world than first meets the eye, which I appreciated.

Not everyone is cheery, of course. The corruption, named the ‘shade’, is constantly chasing you. After a set number of turns, it’ll catch you and combat begins. It’s a turn-based affair, with your lizard friends positioned on a hex grid. Combat mainly involves getting your folks into position to smack the enemy or to chain together skills. It’s also D’n’D-esque, as you need to balance movement, attack and ‘spiritual’ points while keeping up the pressure. Even with my poor skills, it’s good fun – there’s a unique joy when a strategy pays off and a group of enemies topple like dominoes. There’s a lot of frustration but once you break through the wall, it’s great. That side of Aetheris works really well.

Aetheris - An example of the combat

Scaly Rogues

The other main side of Aetheris is a roguelite. For each run, you pick four lizards to march forth. As they progress, they level up, picking from a set of personality traits, which dicate which cards you’ll draw for their skills, adding in some RNG spice. The stronger their personalities, the more choices open up in the overworld too. So if you have an empathetic lizard, you can be more generous towards people and are more likely to get healing abilities. As you travel, you meet different events as your lizard friends dictate your choices. You’ve got to balance that with the ever-encroaching shade. These events are generally the same each run, so you naturally start to learn the best way to deal with them.

That’s a double-edged sword, though. For one, while the events themselves can have different outcomes, the general course of things progresses the same each run. You choose a path at the beginning, have a couple of events, a battle, a camp, then repeat. It gets a little stale after a while, so subsequent runs tend to blur together. Even the battles are usually the same enemies each time. While the events themselves are nicely written, and some do have significant impacts, most are just flat stat changes – so I automatically went for the options that gave the best returns, regardless of any actual decision I wanted to make.

Alongside this are a cluster of smaller issues that make me think the roguelite element isn’t quite blending with the rest of Aetheris. For one, our lizardfolk don’t really have any defining elements. Visually, they’re hard to tell apart, which adds some frustration to the combat. The lack of classes or anything similar means that we only have minor stat differences and a level number to go by when we’re picking our initial team. We only get four chances before a game over too. It’s not a game you can grind through, which isn’t a bad thing. But it does mean once you’ve used up your higher level lads, you might as well chuck the save file in the bin.

Aetheris - Rozidios levels up

Aetheris: In It For The Strategy

Ultimately, the biggest disconnect is between the roguelite elements and the combat. Fighting through a gruelling combat, only to die and have to do it all over again with new lads – with completely different skills – is quite galling. Once your characters start to die, it’s a slow crawl to failure. Not to say the roguelite half doesn’t have its share of good ideas. I like the spirit system, where dead characters can help out living ones, essentially giving them a second life. My gut feeling though is that the roguelite elements subtract more than they add.

If there was more variety – more randomised battles or a greater choice of path to take – it might have made things gel a bit more. As it was, I was more interested in the combat than the roguelite elements. It was quite frustrating to be sent back to square one just to have another crack at a boss. Still, it wasn’t so painful that I found myself giving up. There’s a lot of fun to be had in Aetheris; in the world and combat it presents, even if it does feel a little muddled at times.

Review: Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a wonderfully moralistic title that captures the essence of James Cameron’s epic cinematic masterpiece. However, though it is set in the same period, it is rarely acknowledged. Now, this may seem strange, but I loved the freedom this created. Instead of following an already tried and tested formula, this game lets you become one with the locals and the Eco structure.

This open-world adventure title was developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft. Moreover, it has some wonderful FPS moments and stealth and all-out combat play a key role. Alongside this, you are free to explore, craft, forage, and survive as much or as long as you’d like. As such, it is easy to lose yourself in an immersive and vibrant alien world.

The Na'vi take to the air on winged beasts.
Take to the sky.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora: a roller-coaster of emotions.

Though the vast and often overwhelming world was tough to take in, I adored the exceptional storytelling and the incredible parodies of modern human history. Additionally, the interesting characters, varied tribes, and stunning environment take you on a memorable journey that is tough to put down. Whether you are familiar with the Avatar franchise or not, you’ll enjoy this regardless. Yet, to fully understand the lore, it is best to watch the films.

The game opens in dramatic fashion as the RDA unleashes their heartless and cruel plans. They capture members of the Sarentu to train as Na’vi warriors. These hybrid creatures will assist the humans in their unfortunate and often selfish plans. However, as time passes, the RDA’s grasp of power weakens. Accordingly, a rebellion begins and the surviving members of the Sarentu tribe escape to the Western Frontier of Pandora. Here, they must learn new skills, explore their surroundings, and stop the RDA once and for all.

An open world with a meaning.

An open-world adventure can be one of the best gaming experiences around. Yet, many modern franchises pad their games with pointless quests and empty and lifeless voids that quickly become tedious. Thankfully, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora isn’t guilty of this. Instead, you soar across Pandora whilst utilising your Na’vi sight to highlight resources and learn new information.

Alongside this, there are plenty of tribes to interact with, RDA bases to infiltrate, and special plants to discover to upgrade your skills. Moreover, there is a large crafting element that evolves to become a key gameplay element. As such, you’ll find yourself exploring the lush jungles to find special resources or to hunt creatures for their meat and bones.

The resistance welcomes you.
Welcome to the resistance.

Fighting.

I loved the developers’ approach to the fighting element. Unlike other FPS adventures, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora relies on a mixture of stealth and all-out combat. Additionally, whenever you are hunting animals, you must be accurate and humane to maximise your rewards. Accordingly, there is a sense of tactical nuance and maturity as you approach every combat encounter.

Alongside this, you’ll enjoy a simple but rewarding mini-game while hunting for food. If you yank at any resource too quickly or too hard, you’ll potentially spoil the goods and reduce your yield. As such, you must learn how to tackle each plant to get the best reward. Moreover, there is wild fauna that must be avoided and utilised to cripple your opponents. Therefore, you need to study your environment if you wish to evade creatures or kill them with poisonous and explosive plants.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora: eye-wateringly beautiful.

Whether you love the heartfelt story or not, you will not be disappointed by the awe-inspiring visuals. Every element of this game looks stunning. Whether it is the vivid colours, the exceptional environment, or the cruel and cold robots of the RDA, it will not leave you wanting. Alongside this, the world is absolutely humongous. As such, you can lose yourself as you climb up trees, leap chasms, or swim through rivers and lakes.

What was equally spectacular was the smooth framerate and the problem-free graphics. I rarely noted any issues, and the animation, combat, and cinematics were incredible. Subsequently, if you want to play a game that will push your next-gen console or top-end PC to its limits, then buy Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

The visuals are complemented by impeccable audio. The acting is fantastic and the soundtrack, sound effects, and ambient noises bring the world of Pandora to life. Additionally, each unique dialect and story were wonderfully told. As such, you enjoy a dramatic plot that is captivating and compelling to experience.

The world of Pandora is stunning.
A vast and beautiful world.

Exceptional controls.

Open-world titles are often challenging to master. The developers incorporate many layers to keep you focused and entertained throughout. However, this makes it tough to keep on top of and usually arduous to play. Thankfully, however, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is different. The easy-to-follow tutorial and intelligent button layout ensure that it is simple to play. What’s more, the responsive inputs help whenever you undertake some parkour moments.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a massive game that will keep you busy for hours. Furthermore, it can be enjoyed cooperatively as a cross-platform title. Consequently, it should be easy to find a gaming partner to explore the vast wilderness. However, if this isn’t your thing, you will invest hours into many side quests, foraging, and an unforgettable main storyline.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a fantastic game.

Though the almost overwhelming open world is tough to swallow, exploring quickly becomes enjoyable. Whether you are completing minor tasks or wasting time, there is always something new to discover and plenty of things to see and do. Moreover, playing this with a friend adds a layer of depth that changes the dynamic further. As such, I adore this game and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you keep your tribe alive? Explore the Western Frontier, learn new skills, and defeat the RDA.

4 Useful Tips for Poker

0

Poker is an exciting game that encompasses both mathematical and people skills. To win in poker, you can practice in casino sites like Slotoro. However, you will not compete against real people in that casino. At best, you can practice some basic techniques that allow you to have a better edge. In addition to practicing against computers, you should take into consideration several principles that will help you win. In this article, we will discuss four useful tips.

Know Your Cards

The first tip we have is to know your cards. What we mean by this is that you must know if your first two cards even have a fighting chance. Too many beginners rely on luck, hoping the cards on the table will give them a good hand.

What hands should you not play? Well, check out our list below:

  • Off-suit hands. These cards do not have the same suits, especially if they are from numbers 2 to 7. Not only are these cards not likely to make a flush, but they barely have the chance to make a straight.
  • Face cards with low cards. Meanwhile, face cards are bound to fail if paired with a low card like 2 or 6, especially if they are unsuited. You won’t be able to make a decent hand with this starting pair.
  • Ace and low card. An ace is what you want as a poker player, but it does not make sense to play it if it is paired with a low card. An example is A and 6. There is little likelihood that you can build a three-of-a-kind or a full house with a card like this, especially if it is unsuited.

How you play your initial card is crucial. The trick here is never to wait for fate to be nice to you. If you have a bad starting hand, let it go. Do not hold on to it and hope that the flop will be favorable to you. The only exception here is if you are the big blind.

Defend Your Big Blinds

All poker experts agree that the big blind is the most important position in poker. If you play this wrong, you will lose money. As the big blind, you have the power to close the action. You also have the power to see what other players did before the close of the round. You know if they raised, called, folded, etc. In addition to this, you are also heavily invested already. Even if the other players have not made any raise, you are the player who has the biggest bet or ante. If a player raises 2x the big blind, you already invested 1x of that, so now you only have to invest 1x more.

Play a Few Hands That are Likely to Win

Many players itch to play with their hands. What typically happens is that they keep on raising, betting, calling, and they lose. Do not do this. It is better to play a few strong hands and play them aggressively. Why is this important? If you are a loose player, the other players can easily read through you. They know that you just keep on betting even if you lose. If you are a tight player, people would know you only play if you have a good hand. No matter what people think, you should never take big risks and chances in poker. Play fewer hands and lose less money than if you played more hands.

Know Your Competition

The final tip we have is for you to know who or what you are up against. If you do know how to assess them, you should be able to make the right decisions. Perhaps the most important kind of player to spot is the loose player. These players are willing to take big risks even if they do not have a good hand to play.

Here are the characteristics of a loose player:

  • Does not want to fold
  • Very speculative in-game style
  • Bets and re-raises without thinking

You must take advantage of a loose player by being aggressive, especially if you have good hands. Loose players can be dangerous, however, if you compete against them and you have no good hands. The best approach is to raise your bets as high as you can if you have good hands.

Master the Game and Succeed in Poker

Some say that poker is a game of chance. However, we can say that poker is more of a game of skill because you make decisions that allow you to win. It can take some time to become a poker master, and it will only happen if you keep practicing. Always remember these four useful tips, as they will still apply to you even if you get good at the game.

Everything about this device was spectacular. First, setting it up was a cinch! Effectively, it is a plug-and-play monitor that needs minimal effort. Yet, if you love to play with settings, you can do so if you wish. Second, flitting between sources was easy to achieve. The excellent menu system enables you to select between each input with ease. Finally, the ability to desktop or wall mount the device was great. Either way, the monitor looked amazing, regardless.

In practice, the Dark Matter 27″ 165 Hz gaming monitor was phenomenal to look at. No matter what genre I chucked at it, it delivered amazing visuals and no obvious negatives. Additionally, the up to 1.07 billion colour palette helps to create an immense visual treat that is tough to beat. As such, I loved to play eerie and sinister horrors or intense and vivid adventure titles. Moreover, the buttery smooth visuals were incredible when enjoying FPS games.

Build quality.

Handling a monitor fills me with dread! The idea that I’ll damage the screen or crack the housing sends shivers down my spine. However, Dark Matter has tackled this issue with its robust and easy-to-handle design. What’s more, it is easy to remove the rear VESA mount cover and this was reassuring. The hardened plastic and black finish emit a professional and sleek appearance. Moreover, the simple control panel is hidden from sight and this streamlines things further.

If you wish to use the desk mount, you’ll enjoy multiple viewing angles. Consequently, you will have the perfect picture, and you’ll be comfortable at the same time. Alongside this, the mount is sturdy, robust, and reassuringly balanced. As such, you needn’t worry about your monitor falling off your desktop in the middle of the night.

Is the Dark Matter 27″ 165 Hz gaming monitor worth it?

Designers Are Re-Imagining How Classic Games Feel and Play

0

When most people think of games such as card games, board games or dominoes they tend to imagine standard versions of old classics like Texas Hold’em poker and monopoly. But much like hardware developers try to breathe new life into retro video games, gaming designers do the same for the apparatus we use to play traditional games. Here are some of our favorite efforts.

Packs of cards are far from all being the same, with many games using wild variations of the classic versions found in the likes of poker or rummy

Packs of Cards Are Getting a Makeover

It seems as though the standard packs of playing cards that most people are used to have been around since time immemorial, but actually that is far from the case, with original playing cards taking many different forms, such as long and narrow designs that have since been brought up to date by card manufacturing companies like Hoyle.

Indeed, this trend for going back in history for inspiration rings true with many contemporary card designers who are copying artists of the past who saw playing cards as some kind of impromptu canvas upon which to etch their paintings and sketches.

Some of the most beautiful card designs out there today can be found in the fantasy worlds of strategy card games like Lost Cities and Celestia. Then there is also Dixit, whose every card is something of a work of art. The game is quite fun too!

There are even now companies that allow customers to design their own pack of cards, letting people include their photos or own artwork on the backs of playing cards.

Dice Continue to Evolve from Their Chinese Roots

Dice date all the way back to ancient Chinese dynasties when games were designed around the idea of emperors and their armies conquering foreign lands or unruly provinces.

Because they were initially made by monks, their designs were incredibly elaborate, carved from materials such as ivory or wood, until generations whittled them down to the six-sided dice we know and love today.

However, with some designers growing bored of this traditional setup, many have been experimenting with quite out-there adaptations.

Some of these resemble spinning tops, while others are made of metal and look like they could be the Borg’s cube from Star Trek.

The rules of many games also necessitate a die to have more than six sides. In fact, there are many styles of dice that have more than six sides.

Dice have come a long way from their ancient Chinese roots

Board game Design is Perhaps the Ultimate Blend of Game Dynamics and Ergonomic Style

When it comes to games that exist solely offline, look no further than board games for cutting edge design, with games developers demanding that their designers consider not only the aesthetics of the board, pieces, and cards; but also how intuitively they function within the game’s rules and competitive dynamics.

The rise of gaming cafes and bars, as well as people wanting to escape their computer and phone screens, has driven a huge rise in the number of borderline genius board games being released of late.

Some of these include Mice and Mystics, Root, and Scythe, although there really are too many to list off here, so go and search out the ones that will suit you best.

Designers Finding Ways to Revolutionise Dominoes

Last but not least there are dominoes, which much like dice have been around for thousands of years.

Design, when it comes to dominoes, tends to focus on what a tile can actually be used for or made to do differently, rather than changing its original form.

This is most evident in the work done by people like Lily Hevesh, who builds incredible domino displays, which set off physics-defying helter-skelter effects that boggle the minds of everyone who sees them. Impressive to say the least!

The Most Annoying Features In Online Multiplayer Games Of 2023

0

It’s time for a gripe. While this year in gaming might be one of the best in recent memory, it’s also one that has been plagued by baffling decisions on the industry side, and few types of games feel the weight of those decisions quite as badly as online games. Here, we’re going to look at some of the worst aspects currently popular in multiplayer games.

Photo – Pixabay License

Micro-transactions and season passes

For as long as online games have been able to make money, publishers have been looking for ways to squeeze dollars out of them and, as always, one of the absolute worst examples is in one of the best and most widely played games: Fortnite. Their current incarnation of the microtransaction store, paired with a season pass that constantly taunts you with the cool stuff you could enjoy if you’re willing to pay every single season, feels downright manipulative. Who would have thought there would come a time when we miss lootboxes? But the current season pass model feels, in every way, less worth it, and less exciting.

Gated progression systems in competitive games

It’s okay for games to have an onboarding system that helps you get used to the basics of the game while steadily rolling out more weapons, features, and perks. However, when you can expect to play for dozens of hours before you fully get leveled up, like with recent CODs, that’s too close to giving veteran players an unfair advantage. Thankfully, modded accounts for sale allow you to skip the grind necessary to unlock everything and even come with cosmetics to help you look like a lot less of a newbie. Certainly a lot more convenient than having to plug through the same few match types so that you can quickly grind out the levels you need to unlock everything manually.

Skill-based matchmaking

Now, this isn’t to say that veteran professionals should have free reign to dominate brand-new players all day long (as if they don’t already do that through smurfing), but a lot of players will agree that skill-based matchmaking is going too far in shooters, to the point that it’s not just ranked modes that rely exclusively on it, but a lot of casual modes, too. Simply put, it has the effect of forcing players of all skill levels to constantly play at their sweatiest and most competitive, which is also why you’re seeing a lot of even professional players getting burnt out more quickly, the experience of hopping on for a quick match simply isn’t there in a lot of games.

Nowadays, if you want to get into multiplayer gaming, it’s often a lot more convenient just to find a ready-made account that helps you skip much of the nonsense a new player has to go through. However, the best way to change this is to, as gamers, make it very clear to the developers and publishers what we think. We’ve seen bad decisions get reversed through feedback before, so never forget that power.
