Acer RevoCenter Windows Home Server 2011 Server Nowhere To Be Found at IFA

In a strange move, Acer is not showing their Acer RevoCenter Windows Home Server 2011 server at IFA!

IFA is Europe’s largest Consumer Electronics Show, and as you have seen here on UWHS many companies show off their new and future gadgets and hardware. Back in April we told you about Acer’s new WHS 2011 box, and then everything went quiet. Then last week we told you that Microsoft have blogged that it was coming very soon.

What I thought was strange was that WHS 2011 has been out for quiet a while now without any real OEM support from the “big” players apart from the initial announcement followed by a huge silence. Then months later, after Microsoft dropped the price of WHS 2011 to System Builders, suddenly there is another announcement saying its coming soon, but again no real concrete information.

No worries I thought, Acer have a huge area at IFA and they are bound to be showing off this new box, and there in the corner of the booth I spotted it, or at least I thought so. It said RevoCenter on the card in front.

Acer WHS V1 Box

It turned out to be Acer’s original WHS version 1 box, which is a few years old now! When I asked where the new box was I was told they were waiting on the version of WHS, which the guy couldn’t remember what it was called but it began with a V! When I said Vail, he said yes, they were waiting for Vail to be released before they were going to start shipping. When I told him that Vail was WHS 2011, and it had been out for months now he seemed surprised. I even asked him about the Microsoft announcement and he didn’t seem to know what I was talking about. Now to be fair on him, not everyone working on the booth will know everything about the product release schedule, but you would think he would know about this given it was the area of the booth he was working, and he certainly knew about WHS V1!

So I am very confused. Why bring a really old product to IFA and not bother to bring your new one, even after Microsoft “announced” it publicly only a week before?

Does this mean that Acer’s WHS 2011 box isn’t quite as ready as Microsoft would lead us to believe?

Windows 8 To Include Media Center

3

Steven Sinofsky today confirmed that Media Center will be included in Windows 8.  Read on for details!

windows_8_by_jaycee13-d3hu6ac

Steven Sinofsky is in charge of development for Windows 8 and he has been blogging lately.  Today, he posted up an interesting tidbit or two about Windows 8 and confirmed that Media Center will be included.  Here is what he said:

Media Center

While not a central topic of feedback, I received about 50 emails about Media Center. I want to reassure customers that Media Center will definitely be part of Windows 8. No doubt about it. Knowing how strong the support for Media Center is among pre-release testers, we still have work to do to make sure the quality and compatibility with add-ins is what you would expect even in pre-release (as with any release of Windows, compatibility is a major effort and when we work on the underlying video engine, as one example, we have to make sure features that push these areas receive adequate coverage).

In the coming months, many folks will be testing pre-release builds of Windows 8. As everyone knows, two things are always the case early on. First, the software is not done and things will change—features will be added and removed. Second, the different editions or SKUs are not developed or announced until late in the development process (closer to market availability).

Media Center will not be part of the first pre-release builds. Some other features/capabilities will not be in the first pre-release builds including: Windows 7 games, DVD Creator, upgrade setup, Dot Net 3.5 (Note there are perhaps a couple of other relatively low profile items but just wanted to hit the major ones here). These are engineering decisions as well as business decisions.

As we get closer to market availability, we will make sure to explain how not just these specifically but all features of the product will be made available. As an aside, it is early to start the dialogue about a preference for one SKU with Windows. We’re well aware of this feedback and we always need to balance it with the feedback from our business partners who value a different approach. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. Interestingly, the feedback about Media Center was predominantly “we will pay extra, just include it” based on the input directly to me. Today Media Center is part of “premium” SKUs for Windows, which means that is the case today.

Here’s what Dave has to say about this weeks show:

It’s a rare occurrence for The Home Server Show.  Yes, a podcast that is under 1 hour.  We have Jerry, the author of Home Server Status for Windows Home Server 2011.  We go over a bit of news and then chat with Jerry about his software.  Skype issues kept us from going long but it’s a pretty good show.  Dave is buying 15 licenses of Home Server Status for the listeners and you will have to hear the show to find out why.  I’ll post a notice in the forums when you will be able to get those free licenses.  Enjoy!

As usual you can listen to the show from here.
