Installing ElephantDrive on Windows 7

0

I recently installed ElephantDrive cloud storage service on my Windows 7 desktop.  Here is the story!

ElephantDrive

Back in November 2011, I told you about ElephantDrive’s cloud storage solution when discussing the QNAP TurboNAS cloud storage capabilities.  I recently was provided with a one year subscription to ElephantDrive and decided to back up documents on my Windows 7 desktop with it.

Service Background

First, some background on ElephantDrive.  Here is how they describe themselves:

What We Do…

ElephantDrive is committed to providing individuals and businesses simple but powerful tools for protecting and accessing their data. We want ordinary people to enjoy the peace of mind that comes from the type of enterprise-class backup, storage, and data management that has historically only been available to big corporations. And we’ve made it so simple.

Why ElephantDrive?

Our service has a lot in common with the world’s largest land mammal. When you subscribe to ElephantDrive, you get a service that is very big, never forgets, and works for peanuts!

Who We Are…

ElephantDrive was founded by a team of technologists who are passionate about developing world class software and fascinated by the challenges of storing, securing, and protecting massive amounts of data. We are based in Los Angeles and have worked together for years designing and deploying online applications.

Military grade encryption keeps your files safe and secure
  • Secure 128-bit SSL transfer
Information sent from you to ElephantDrive is protected by the same system that banks and financial institutions use to secure their transactions.
  • Advanced 256-bit AES encryption
Before transfer, your files are encrypted with the preferred algorithm of the U.S. government (approved for “Top Secret” use by the NSA).
Intelligent software moves your data fast
  • Innovative delivery technology
Our engineers have designed an advanced, proprietary system for maximizing your available bandwidth while minimizing the effects on your system.
  • Differential backups
ElephantDrive recognizes which files are new or have been modified so that after your first backup completes, all future backups will go much faster.
Access and share your files anytime, anywhere
  • Universal access
With ElephantDrive’s web-based portal you have 24/7 access to all of your files, wherever you are!
  • Easy and secure file sharing
Share any file with a single click (great for files that are too large to email), and set a password for extra security.
One program to unify your data
  • Multiple devices and multiple platforms
Works with laptops, servers, external storage devices, MACs, PCs, and most server operating systems.
  • Powerful administrative controls
Create independent sub-accounts with different access privileges (Business Plan required), and monitor your account activity and data usage.

ElephantDrive is installed to your PC and backups to the cloud happen on a scheduled basis.  If you are interested in ensuring that your data is automatically backed up offsite, cloud storage is a convenient option.  I have tested it with a QNAP TurboNAS and it works very well on that device as well.

Installation

Installation of ElephantDrive is relatively easy.  First, download the ElephantDrive Windows application and run the installer.  Once the installer completes, ElephantDrive asks you to decide if you want to configure your backups.  You’ll see this screen:

Apple introduces Developer ID and Gatekeeper for Mac OS X Mountain Lion

Apple have started contacting developers and advising them to join their Mac Developer Program by introducing Developer ID and their new Gatekeeper feature in OS X Mountain Lion.

Gatekeeper

The Mac App Store is the safest place for users to get software for their Mac, but we also want to protect users when they get applications from other places. Gatekeeper is a new feature in OS X Mountain Lion that helps protect users from downloading and installing malicious software. Signing your applications, plug-ins, and installer packages with a Developer ID certificate lets Gatekeeper verify that they are not known malware and have not been tampered with.

Mac Developer Program members can sign applications with their Developer ID now to get ready for Gatekeeper. If you’re not already a member, join the Mac Developer Program today.

Barnes & Noble and Microsoft announce new strategic partnership called Newco; includes NOOK app for Windows 8

Barnes & Noble and Microsoft today announced the formation of a strategic partnership in a new Barnes & Noble subsidiary, which will build upon the history of strong innovation in digital reading technologies from both companies.

barnes-noble-nook

This is the press release with more details:

The partnership will accelerate the transition to e-reading, which is revolutionizing the way people consume, create, share and enjoy digital content.

The new subsidiary, referred to in this release as Newco, will bring together the digital and College businesses of Barnes & Noble. Microsoft will make a $300 million investment in Newco at a post-money valuation of $1.7 billion in exchange for an approximately 17.6% equity stake. Barnes & Noble will own approximately 82.4% of the new subsidiary, which will have an ongoing relationship with the company’s retail stores. Barnes & Noble has not yet decided on the name of Newco.

One of the first benefits for customers will be a NOOK application for Windows 8, which will extend the reach of Barnes & Noble’s digital bookstore by providing one of the world’s largest digital catalogues of e-Books, magazines and newspapers to hundreds of millions of Windows customers in the U.S. and internationally.

The inclusion of Barnes & Noble’s College business is an important component of Newco’s strategic vision. Through the newly formed Newco, Barnes & Noble’s industry leading NOOK Study software will provide students and educators the preeminent technology platform for the distribution and management of digital education materials in the market.

“The formation of Newco and our relationship with Microsoft are important parts of our strategy to capitalize on the rapid growth of the NOOK business, and to solidify our position as a leader in the exploding market for digital content in the consumer and education segments,” said William Lynch, CEO of Barnes & Noble. “Microsoft’s investment in Newco, and our exciting collaboration to bring world-class digital reading technologies and content to the Windows platform and its hundreds of millions of users, will allow us to significantly expand the business.”

“The shift to digital is putting the world’s libraries and newsstands in the palm of every person’s hand, and is the beginning of a journey that will impact how people read, interact with, and enjoy new forms of content,” said Andy Lees, President at Microsoft. “Our complementary assets will accelerate e-reading innovation across a broad range of Windows devices, enabling people to not just read stories, but to be part of them. We’re at the cusp of a revolution in reading.”

Barnes & Noble and Microsoft have settled their patent litigation, and moving forward, Barnes & Noble and Newco will have a royalty-bearing license under Microsoft’s patents for its NOOK eReader and Tablet products. This paves the way for both companies to collaborate and reach a broader set of customers.

This is a very interesting move, and I look forward to seeing more of this in the near future. What do you think?

LG announces LG Cloud service beta

LG Electronics (LG) have announced the beta opening of LG Cloud service with the aim of providing seamless connectivity and streaming access to all digital content across various electronic devices.

LG%20Cloud%203[20120430160625635]

Although cloud is today’s hottest IT buzzwords, LG Cloud is the first that allows users to manage and consume all types of content on “three screens” which includes Android smartphones, PCs and smart TVs (including but not limited to CINEMA 3D models) without a separate set-top box.

To use the service, users need to download the LG Cloud app from Google Play or LG SmartWorld app store from their Android smartphones, LG SmartWorld store from their LG Smart TVs or the LG Cloud website (www.lgecloud.com) from their PCs or laptops. LG’s Cloud service automatically synchronizes smartphone content with the cloud server and the user’s PC and TV. Photos and videos taken with the smartphone can be viewed and streamed to the PC or TV almost instantaneously. Videos edited on a PC can be uploaded to LG Cloud for viewing seconds later on a smartphone. Unlike other cloud services, there’s very little waiting or lag time since the content is streamed to the TV, PC or smartphone, not downloaded first.

The difference is in LG’s Real-time Streaming Transcoding technology. The conversion happens on the server in realtime, not on the device. There is no need to worry about installing codecs or converters, everything happens seamlessly and in the background with no involvement from the user. No other cloud service can make this same claim.

The service also works perfectly with 3D content. Vacation videos taken with an LG 3D smartphone can be uploaded via 3G or Wi-Fi to the LG Cloud service. Back home in the comforts of the living room, the family can watch the vacation footage as it streams from LG Cloud to their LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV in superb three dimensions.

To better develop cloud services that prioritize convergence, LG created a new division called Smart Business Center to focus specifically on content and services. Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG’s Home Entertainment Company, is also responsible for the new Smart Business Center.

LG Cloud will be offered as both a free and paid service. Free storage space and pricing will differ market to market and will be announced separately as the service becomes available in that country.
