Making your TV shows look great in Plex

Plex have just pushed out a new Local Media Agent, and as part of it has posted all about how to make your TV shows look better.

Plex-Media-Manager-3

This is what Plex posted on their blog:

One recurring request we’ve gotten is to make it easier to add posters and background art to TV library sections, especially on Windows and Linux. In some cases, TheTVDB might not have a show, or maybe you want to create a completely custom section to organize your home videos into seasons and episodes. We just pushed a new Local Media Agent (which you’ll automatically get in the next few hours), that makes it really easy!

So what can you add to TV show sections?

  • Show posters: show.jpg
  • Show banners: banner.jpg
  • Show background art: art.jpg or background.jpg
  • Show theme music: theme.mp3
  • Season posters: seasonX.jpg
  • Season banners: seasonX-banner.jpg
  • Episode thumbs: match the filename of the episode file

You can also use PNG files, if you’re a “losslessite” (I’m sure you listen to FLACs too). One really cool feature is that you can actually have multiple elements; just name them suffixed like show-1.jpg, theme-2.mp3. For multiple season elements, use the suffix a, b, c, etc.

Do that, and you’ll end up with something that looks like the image below. Pretty cool, right? We also fixed a few other bugs in the agent while we were at it:

  • NEW: Pick up genre in MP3 files.
  • FIX: Issue where different movie posters were picked up during each scan.
  • FIX: A stray folder.jpg file could apply to every movie in a folder.

Do you use Plex? Let us know what you think of it and how you use it.

WaterField Designs, an innovative leader in custom laptop sleeves, and designer bags and cases for digital gear, introduces the CitySlicker, an urban MacBook Air case with an old-world spin that uses modern materials to provide the utmost protection.

TN-47500_cityslicker-grizzly-handle-press

Designed to enhance the Air’s lightness without adding bulk, the CitySlicker is compact, even with accessories. WaterField’s thoughtful design combines three layers of protection using impact-resistant plastic, high-grade neoprene, and a padded liner to keep the Air safe from unexpected dings.

“The MacBook Air is unbelievably thin, and we wanted to enhance that look rather than detract from it,” explained Gary Waterfield, company founder. “The challenge was to design something sleek with hard-case protection, while keeping it compact, and to create a look that works on weekdays as well as weekends. We added a rugged, distressed leather flap to complete the ‘old-world meets modern’ look we were after.”

The CitySlicker MacBook Air Case combines sturdy ballistic nylon with a distressed, leather flap that snaps into place, giving the ultra-modern case its old-world twist. The flap covers an accessory nook with four stretchy pockets to keep items snugly in place. A back, semi-opaque pocket with a self-locking zipper stows thin items or accessories. Opt to tuck it under an arm, or to add a handle, a strap, or both. Available exclusively at sfbags.com in four colors: black, chocolate, grizzly and camel.

Halo 4 Limited Edition and Forward Unto Dawn Special Edition now available for pre-order

Available for pre-order today, “Halo 4” Limited Edition provides the ultimate multiplayer experience and “Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn” Special Edition.

halo4_2d_pegi_boxshot_jpg_jpgcopy

As millions of fans worldwide eagerly await the return of the Master Chief with the launch of “Halo 4” on 6 November, Microsoft and 343 Industries today revealed all-new details around the year’s most anticipated blockbuster.

Set almost five years after the events of “Halo 3,” “Halo 4” takes the series in a bold new direction and sets the stage for an epic new sci-fi saga, in which the Master Chief returns to confront his destiny and face an ancient evil that threatens the fate of the entire universe. In addition to a rich story and campaign, “Halo 4” introduces a groundbreaking new multiplayer offering, called “Halo Infinity Multiplayer,” that builds off of the “Halo” franchise’s rich multiplayer history and promises to continue to innovate and redefine the way people think about storytelling and multiplayer experiences.

Introducing “Halo Infinity Multiplayer”

The hub of the “Halo 4” multiplayer experience is the UNSC Infinity – the largest starship in the UNSC fleet that serves as the centre of your Spartan career. Here you’ll build your custom Spartan-IV supersoldier, and progress your multiplayer career across all “Halo 4” competitive and cooperative game modes. Surrounded by the sights, sounds and crew of the biggest vessel in the UNSC fleet, your multiplayer experience will be embedded in the fiction of “Halo” like never before, where your progress and game choices affect your appearance, arsenal, and role on the battlefield.

· Spartan Ops. The story of the UNSC Infinity intersects with the “Halo 4” campaign, then continues on in a brand-new, story-driven experience known as Spartan Ops. A first of its kind and an exciting new addition to the “Halo” franchise, Spartan Ops is an episodic adventure that blends immersive storytelling, high-quality cinematics, and action-packed gameplay to deliver an unprecedented serialised experience.

Through a weekly series of cinematic episodes on Xbox LIVE, Spartan Ops will tell the continuing story of the UNSC Infinity, following the events of “Halo 4.” These episodes will centre on the UNSC Infinity leaders and crew, and a new team of Spartans – Majestic Squad. These cinematic episodes will provide the backdrop for the weekly Spartan Ops gameplay missions. Playable in single-player or cooperatively (with up to three friends), explore the corners of Requiem in these objective-based missions, and help uncover the secrets of the mysterious Forerunner world.

A massive-scale adventure that builds off the “Halo 4” story, access to Spartan Ops is included with “Halo 4” at no additional charge – effectively delivering two campaign experiences in one game.*

· War Games. The competitive multiplayer modes of “Halo 4,” known as War Games, take place on the combat deck of the UNSC Infinity and revive the visceral and immersive experiences that “Halo” multiplayer is famous for. “Halo 4” introduces fresh, immersive new game modes and strategies to help you progress your Spartan-IV career, while also delivering an experience that’s still distinctly and uniquely “Halo.” More details on all the modes of War Games will be released at a later time.

· Total Combat Freedom and Player Progression. “Halo 4” features a vastly expanded suite of new multiplayer modes, weapons, vehicles, armour abilities, a new loadout and player progression system, and a new armour modification system that introduces gameplay-enhancing customisations for the first time in a “Halo” game. These advancements can be used in both Spartan Ops and certain War Games matchmaking playlists, empowering player choice, vastly expanding their creative options, and make the experience deeper for core fans and more approachable for newcomers.

The “Halo 4” player progression system goes beyond simple aesthetic upgrades, encouraging players to invest time and effort to create a Spartan that looks and plays the way they want. Players can earn and activate combat enhancements called “Specialisations” based on the style of play they engage in, from stealth to all-out assault, and everything in between.

“Halo 4” Limited Edition

Available for pre-order today, the “Halo 4” Limited Edition maximises your multiplayer experience and puts you in the boots of a Spartan-IV aboard the UNSC Infinity – the hub of your “Halo” multiplayer career.

Available for £69.99**, the “Halo 4” Limited Edition includes:

· War Games Map Pack Access – The Limited Edition includes access to nine maps – three future competitive multiplayer map packs, each including three locations, available for download post-launch on Xbox LIVE.
(A detailed release schedule for the map packs will be announced at a later time)

· Specializations – Receive early access to six Specialisations, available at launch on Xbox LIVE, to achieve higher ranks in your Spartan career. In addition to gaining access to new ranks, Specialisations unlock new customisation options. Purchasers of the “Halo 4” Limited Edition will get access on launch day, while others will have to wait as Specialisations are released over time.

And it is so slim that from across a room it was difficult to make out the Ultra Slim Box against the TV stand (this picture shows it better).

I was very impressed with the Ultra Slim Box. It really is slim! It is also very quiet and even after having been running for several hours it was still pretty cool to the touch, which isn’t something you can say for a lot of other boxes.

The Echostar Ultra Slim Box will be available by the end of this month. Pricing has not yet been finalised, but expect it to be between £250 and £300, from Amazon and John Lewis. Amazon are currently showing it as a pre-order for £259.99.

Microsoft talks delivering reliable and trustworthy Metro style apps in Windows 8

In the next in their on-going Building Windows 8 series, Microsoft tackles the subject of delivering reliable and trustworthy Metro style apps.

apps

This is how the article starts:

One of our core principles in the development of the Windows 8 Metro style app platform was to ensure that users would have confidence in their apps. This is a mission we’re in together; in this post, I explain our vision for app confidence and reliability and help you build confidence by design into your apps.

Let me start by explaining what we mean by confidence. Picture a customer browsing the Windows Store looking at a Metro style app; we want them to be thinking only about the app and whether or not it is right for them. We want them to assume—in fact be confident—that the app will behave the way they expect and thus will perform well on their system, will use only the data and information they authorize, and will harmoniously co-exist with their other applications.

Our goal with the platform is to help us all build great apps that embody this vision of confidence so that we get confidence by default. To that end we made investments throughout the system.

StarTech launches Thunderbolt Cables

0

StarTech.com, a leading manufacturer of hard-to-find connectivity parts has announced the launch of a new Thunderbolt cables product line, with a wide variety of lengths including 0.5m (1.6ft), 1m (3.3ft), 2m (6.6ft), and the first 3m (9.9ft) Thunderbolt cable available.

Thunderbolt Cables

Each of the cables are constructed using the active components required to support the full, high-bandwidth capability of the Thunderbolt interface: 10Gbps (bi-directional), for inter-connecting devices such as Thunderbolt-equipped external RAID enclosures and other applications such as daisy chaining Thunderbolt devices.

“We are excited to include Thunderbolt cables in our comprehensive line-up of connectivity parts. Thunderbolt technology is supported by all current Apple computers, as well as some models from Acer, Asus and Lenovo, and we’re expecting the interface to be available on an increasing number of computers in the weeks and months to come” said Keith Rodrigues, Senior Product Manager for StarTech.com’s Cables product line.

“Thunderbolt peripherals don’t typically ship with cables included, so the range in lengths we’ve made available offer the customer the flexibility to choose the length that best suits them – shorter cables, such as the 0.5m and 1m lengths for daisy chaining, and longer cables such as the 2m and 3m lengths, which are suited for more convenient placement of peripherals.” said Rodrigues.

Some of the features of the new Thunderbolt cables include:

· Support for dual-channel, simultaneous bi-directional data and video transfers up to 10 Gbps per channel

· Supports Power-over-cable, for bus-powered devices

· Dual Protocol support (PCI Express and DisplayPort)

· Durable cable construction, with high quality Thunderbolt connectors

StarTech.com Thunderbolt cables will be available for purchase from technology resellers including Insight, Amazon.co.uk and Dabs and will also be distributed by Enta, Ingram Micro and Micro-P. RRP for these products are as follows:

TBOLTMM50CM : 0.5m Thunderbolt Cable – M/M £30.99 GBP exc VAT

TBOLTMM1M : 1m Thunderbolt Cable – M/M £30.99 GBP exc VAT

TBOLTMM2M : 2m Thunderbolt Cable – M/M £30.99 GBP exc VAT
