Ubisoft releases Watch Dogs Dedsec video

Ubisoft released a new video for Watch Dogs called Dedsec.

WatchDogs_Police_Block_TrafficLight_

Set in Chicago, where a central network of computers connects everyone and everything, Watch_Dogs explores the impact of technology within our society. Using the city as your weapon, you will embark on a personal mission to inflict your own brand of justice.

A software bug led to a breakdown of services during the Northeast blackout of 2003, including communication, transportation and power. Now, 10 years later, how much more secure are we?

Here is the new video:

Chicago’s overarching network is known as the Central Operating System (ctOS), and it controls almost all of the city’s technology and information – including key data on all of the city’s residents.

You play as Aiden Pearce, a brilliant hacker and former thug, whose criminal past led to a violent family tragedy. While seeking justice for those events, you’ll monitor and hack those around you by manipulating the ctOS from the palm of your hand. You’ll access omnipresent security cameras, download personal information to locate a target, control traffic lights and public transportation to stop the enemy… and more.

I got some hands-on playtime with Watch Dogs at Gamescom this week, so stay tuned for my thoughts soon.

The PlayStation Vita has another game coming, Sega’s Football Manager Classic 2014.  And if you own the PC or PS3 version as well, you’ll be able to pick up where you left off on the PS Vita.  Here is the press release:

FOOTBALL MANAGER CLASSIC FOR PLAYSTATION® VITA OFFERS ONE GAME – HOME AND AWAY

Football Manager™ Classic 2014 PS Vita delivers a major first for FM fans, allowing them to pursue a single career whether at home on their computer or on the move with PlayStation Vita

August 20th 2014

Sports Interactive and SEGA® Europe Ltd. are delighted to announce a collaboration with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd. (SCEE) which will result in the release of a major landmark in the development of the Football Manager series, Football Manager Classic 2014 for PlayStation Vita.

FMC 2014 for PS Vita is the first game in the series’ long and successful history to allow cross-platform compatibility away from home computers, meaning that fans who own both FM 2014 (and play Classic mode) for PC, Mac or Linux and FMC 2014 for PS Vita will be able to carry on a single continuous game, whether they’re at home using their computer or out and about with their PlayStation Vita (or vice versa).

In addition, FMC 2014 for PS Vita will also be the first ever handheld game to feature FM’s acclaimed 3D Match Engine, adding an extra layer of realism and immersion that’s been unavailable in previous Football Manager games for handheld devices, alongside a pretty much identical feature set to Football Manager Classic on home computers.

“This is a hugely significant landmark for Football Manager,” says Miles Jacobson, Studio Director for Sports Interactive. “Not only are we today announcing a first for us, with a portable version of Football Manager Classic, but we’re also announcing the first game ever to provide cross-save between PC, Mac, Linux and PS Vita. Play the game at home, at work, at Uni, on the bus, on the train – wherever you want to, with the saved game stored in the cloud. Welcome to the future.”

“At PlayStation, many of us have longed for the full Football Manager experience on the go, so we’re absolutely thrilled to see Football Manager 2014 make its first full appearance on the PlayStation Vita,” says Shahid Ahmad, Senior Business Development Manager, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE). Speaking of the project, he adds: “We were especially thrilled to support the Sports Interactive team’s desire to create a seamless experience between Football Manager on a home computer and the PlayStation Vita. It’s always a pleasure working with our long-standing partners at SEGA and we’re looking forward to the fruit of this innovative collaboration between our companies.”

Football Manager Classic started life as a ‘slimmed down’ game mode in Football Manager 2013, specifically designed as an alternative, less time-consuming way for players to approach the game. The release of FMC 2014 for PS Vita marks the first time that it’s been released as a standalone game.

Produced with considerable support from SCEE, FMC 2014 for PS Vita has been co-developed by Sports Interactive, sister game development studio Hardlight (responsible for Sonic Dash and Sonic Jump) and Sheffield-based Little Stone Software.

“The creation of FMC 2014 for PS Vita has been a really positive advertisement for the value of collaboration,” adds Jacobson. “It was no mean feat to get a game as technically advanced as Football Manager onto a mobile device with the minimum of compromise and it’s taken a great deal of effort and ingenuity to make it happen. Everyone who’s worked on this game at SI, Hardlight, Little Stone and, of course, PlayStation has done an awesome job and I would like to say a huge thanks to them all for making what was originally a ‘wouldn’t it be good?’ type conversation between ourselves and PlayStation into reality.”

Football Manager Classic 2014 for PlayStation Vita will be published by SEGA and will be available as both a physical release and a digital download through the PSN store.

WatchDogs_Police_Block_TrafficLight_[3]

Ubisoft and Sony also showed a first look at the exclusive Watch Dogs gameplay that will be available for PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system this holiday.

“Since both Sony and Ubisoft have movie and video game branches, this deal creates exceptional opportunities for us to merge the realms of the story-based cinematic experience with the interaction of the video game,” said Jean-Julien Baronnet, chief executive officer, Ubisoft Motion Pictures. “In addition, Sony Pictures and New Regency have deep production expertise and are letting us maintain a strong creative voice in the film’s development. Together, we’re confident we can deliver a movie that builds upon the excitement that the game is already generating.”

Commenting on the announcement, Hannah Minghella, president of production for Columbia Pictures, said, “The themes and open gameplay of ‘Watch Dogs’ lends itself perfectly to the big screen. The game has intense action and adventure, but the story focuses on information and the control of information, which we think will lead to an exciting thriller. It has tremendous potential as a motion picture and we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to work closely with Ubisoft’s internal creative team on the development of the project.”

Watch Dogs centers on Aiden Pearce, a brilliant hacker bent on revenge and inflicting his own brand of justice after a violent family tragedy. Using all of his skills, Pearce hacks into Chicago’s Central Operating System (ctOS), which controls the city’s infrastructure, including security cameras, traffic lights, and public transportation, as well as databases containing key information on the city’s residents. In the game, Pearce turns the entire city of Chicago into his ultimate weapon. The game received many awards at E3 2012, including Best of Show from GamingExcellence and three awards (Biggest Surprise, Best New Franchise and Best PC Game) from IGN. The game also won GameSpot’s People’s Choice Most Exciting Game of E3 2013.

The project will be overseen at Ubisoft by Ubisoft Motion Pictures. At Columbia, Minghella and Sam Dickerman will oversee development while Alexandra Milchan and Andrew Calof will work on the forthcoming film for New Regency.

Review of The Bureau: XCOM Declassified from 2K Games

The first thing that becomes apparent about 3 seconds into The Bureau is that things have changed since XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Rather than a fixed top-down camera you are now armed with a brand new third person over-the-shoulder fully interactive camera to explore your environments in. Initially I thought the absolute worst thing that could happen to a team based strategy game is probably the addition of aiming and shooting.

It very quickly becomes clear that the third person aspects of The Bureau aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive with strategy. “Battle Focus” puts the game into slow motion allowing you to give out commands very effectively. It has to be said it’s refreshing to have a strategy game without being cruelly punished because an enemy just spawned behind your carefully planned cover.

2KG_TheBureauXD_BattleFocus

Being able to aim and shoot alongside the strategic team decisions is uniquely liberating. It’s not so easy that you can just blast your way through the entire game but it does allow for some real-time reactions which is particularly welcome in fights where you are outflanked or face overwhelming odds. Terrible flash backs of hideous hit percentages from Enemy Unknown still haunt me today.

Weapons are now collected from dead enemies and become available if you finish the level with them or find scripted points and scan them with your wrist-gadgety-50’s-thingy. Weapons feel unique and all have their own pros and cons but towards the end it becomes apparent that some are quite useless compared with others and, in true XCOM style, you should avoid using conventional weapons at all costs.

In a similar style to Enemy Unknown the late-game becomes more and more populated with difficult/annoying enemies to balance your new weapons, equipment and skills. Obviously the difficulty must ramp in some way but just adding super-ninja-aliens doesn’t seem like the answer to me. My particular favourite is the Muton Elite that can now jetpack behind you. So a powerful lumbering tank – with a jetpack? Not sure why this is necessary and regardless of where you are positioned the Muton Elite will be behind you. At these points The Bureau can descend into a clumsy 3rd person shooter rather than a strategy shooter but luckily it only happens once or twice.

Another strange alteration is almost a complete absence of full cover in the Bureau and I’m not really sure why. Remaining stationary and not coming up to shoot will see you well protected so it’s fine for you. Unfortunately you have no such control over your team mates. You can tell them to move where you want but they will instantly pop up and start shooting, and taking damage.

TBXD_PreviewScreens_Silo_Issue_Order

When an agent shouts out “this is NOT a good position sir!” my (very polite version) response was often “well get in the damn cover then!”. Even whilst taking fire from multiple enemy’s they still, at times, insist on leaning out of cover. Another favourite of mine is the AI’s inability to just sit still. Often when I checked to see where my agents where, as they scorned me for my bad judgement, I found they had got bored and run out of their cover and into danger. Having a sniper cover you and another agent join you as you push forward is almost impossible. Despite the fact every order was obediently followed initially, eventually the “AI” kicked in to override my decision. I would have been much happier had my team mates not had any “intelligence” of their own at all. Stop shooting the sniper with a shotgun, it doesn’t work. Just stay down for 10 seconds! Just listen to me!

It’s frustrating that such a good combat system can be spoiled by a couple of irritating niggles. Luckily for the most part the combat system works well and is very fun to use. It’s user friendly and with little to no tutorial you can fling out commands like a pro. The Bureau should definitely be played as an action strategy rather than a chess match.

Third person games also have greater capacity for characterization and narrative structure. Initially the plot is gripping and exciting – the Bureau concerns itself with the initial alien invasion and therefor takes on a darker survivalist tone. The 50’s setting is a refreshing change too offering old school “futuristic” technology. Offices are wood cladded and smoke filled with more than enough flasks of whisky for even the sternest 50’s gentlemen. Between missions you spend time talking to other agents and interacting with the many collectables in your environment. It’s a welcome distraction that’s well paced and breaks the action up well. It also makes XCOM feel like a real place rather than just a mechanic to allow you to buy upgrades or research weapons.

Unfortunately at the end characters are quickly altered enormously far too fast for it to have any real meaning. It’s a real shame that the last hours of The Bureau instil only confusion and bewilderment and seems to discard any development your character has gone through. I felt that The Bureau’s plot would have been more effective if it had concentrated on dealing with the desperate defence of earth and preserved its dark tone throughout.

2KG_TheBureauXD_CarterSquad

Adding to a confusing and slightly disappointing ending is Bureau’s length. It’s only around 20 hours long and I sorely missed act II where you can really earn some upgrades and build your squad up as you see fit. The middle of The Bureau really needed bulk such as optional missions. Nothing special. Just a few generic, optional, fights. It would at least have allowed me to get to level 10 before literally the last area on the game. What’s the point in a level 10 if you only get there 1 hour from the end?

Audio and visuals are nice enough but sadly they are plagued with technical issues. During almost every cutscene there was a point when the sound cut and the video skipped 3 or 4 seconds. Most of the game is fine and there are no major issues during combat. The problems hardly ruin the game but it’s frustrating that the audio and visuals aren’t allowed to show their full potential.

A much more personal experience and interaction with XCOM beyond combat makes The Bureau a much more driven experience. Side objectives and characters provide an entertaining distraction but aren’t enough to bulk up the 20 hour game. Sadly it looses focus towards the end by overreaching with the plot and technical issues interfere throughout, especially with the cut scenes.

Swapping turn-based strategy for third-person action with a cool slow motion command wheel worked well – minus the questionable team AI which would have been better off dead. Still, a clever new adaptation of strategic 3rd person combat and one that I hope catches on, or at least gets a sequel. Despite all my issues I enjoyed playing The Bureau. The Bureau is definitely worth playing although it may disappoint hard-core strategy fans and those looking to sink some serious time into a game.
