Review: Hidden in My Paradise

Hidden in My Paradise title

As the year comes to a close . . .

T’is the season of holiday hassle, big exams, and working life crunch time. Post-October may be the most stressful time of year for most of us. Plus, the days grow dimmer and colder. Why not kick back, cuddle up on the sofa with lots of blankets and a warm beverage, and play a cozy video game?

Indie developer Ogre Pixel released Hidden in My Paradise in early October: a cute, comfy, puzzle-based hidden objects game designed to give players a short and sweet romp of mental stimulation.

Play Hidden in My Paradise on Steam, the PC, the Nintendo Switch, or mobile app stores.

Fae, fauna, and flora, oh my!

Tour around various landscapes with blue-haired amateur photographer Laly and her little fairy friend, Coronya. Explore magnificently detailed scenes and find hidden flowers, camp items, and critters galore, snap an assortment of adorable pictures, and immerse yourself in a cozy, little world.

Find hidden objects and take photos in Hidden in My Paradise

There are 25 levels (or “paradises”) in total. Players will journey through forests, beaches, cityscapes, farms, and even recently added Halloween stages. Players must find a set amount of hidden objects, find secret fairies by dragging around items (usually behind bushes and flowers), and recreate provided photogenic scenes. While the game is not difficult, if players have trouble finding an object, click on Coronya the fairy as she will provide helpful hints and tips.

A little slice of paradise

Mechanically, the game is quite simple. All players need to do is point and click objects to find them. You can also drag things around and rotate them, which is particularly useful for finding fairies and recreating photos. The game itself is short, but each level may take some time–perhaps 15 to 30 minutes–at your leisure. It is not too hard at all to 100% all of the tasks, but it might take a keen eye.

Cool boost filter in a paradise in Hidden in My Paradise

Each and every paradise can be overlayed with a filter, like sepia, cool color boost, inverted, or you can even make the scene all green. Levels will be automatically set in the morning, evening, or at night, but players are able to freely adjust this setting for better visibility, or just for aesthetic purposes.

Another neat feature of Hidden in My Paradise is the Mario Maker-esque sandbox tools. Create your very own levels or play other players’ creations online! To unlock more items for designing these levels, accrue coins by playing the main game and by finding hidden treasure chests. Players can also play the gacha machine with in-game tickets to receive more unique items. The sandbox feature is loads of fun and easy to use. I personally enjoy spamming the animal who surely looks like a nod to Eevee . . .

Through the looking glass

The game has a cute, childlike chibi style with pops of color, like a more charming and soft Toca Boca game. Even if scenes are hard to see, players can easily change the filter settings as aforementioned. The paradises are not overwhelming or chaotic at all; all the visuals blend together to make a complete, crisp, picturesque landscape.

Buy items and play gacha in Hidden in My Paradise

The only gripe is the sound design, or lack thereof. The squishy sound effect when clicking objects is nice, but pretty much the same background track plays on a constant loop. This gets annoying after a while, so it may be best to play on mute and make your own cozy soundtrack.

Final thoughts

Hidden in My Paradise is full of charm and can easily be played in short bursts, or as a long-term investment to wind down after a tough day at work or school. The game itself is relatively short, but there is lots to it: the sandbox mode, bonus Halloween levels, and the enjoyable struggle of a portrait setup.

Green filter on a Hidden in My Paradise level

The innovative assortment of tasks makes each level even more interesting, making this hidden objects title stand out from the rest. Hidden in My Paradise is definitely worth a try, and might be a great option to chill out and escape from the world even for just a sliver of a second . . .

Review: Function 2 keyboard

The Function 2 keyboard from NZXT aims to combine convenience with blazing-fast inputs. Furthermore, it has a glorious RGB finish that complements its striking white or black finish. This full-size keyboard is ISO UK and requires no advanced computing know-how. Accordingly, it is a brilliant plug-and-play device that is perfect for newbie gamers or elite eSports enthusiasts. Either way, you will not be disappointed with this incredible gaming peripheral.

I’ve tested plenty of gaming keyboards and I’ve enjoyed them all. Akko, ROCCAT, SteelSeries, Epomaker, and more have blown me away for one reason or another. This stunning device sits up there with the best peripherals around. Not only does it look great, but it is easy to use and it has lightning-fast inputs for a game-changing experience. Consequently, if you want an all-rounder that won’t overwhelm you, this product should be on your horizon.

What’s in the box of the Function 2 keyboard?

  • The packaging is large and colourful. It has plenty of key selling points to capture your attention. Moreover, it can be easily recycled.
  • The Function 2 keyboard is a great-looking device. Additionally, it has a media knob, customisable RGB, and a detachable wired connection.
  • A wrist support is provided for comfort.
  • Power the keyboard with the USB-C cable.
  • Remove the keycaps and switches with the provided tools.
  • Learn the basics with the user manual.

Technical aspects.

Though I love to game, I use my PC to edit videos and write my never-ending list of articles and reviews. Accordingly, my requirements may differ from other people. However, I prioritise rapid inputs, long-lasting keycaps, and hot-swappable switches as a priority. The Function 2 keyboard offers each of these elements and much more. The NZXT Swift Optical Switches are remarkably responsive while delivering a deft touch. The 0.2 ms response time complements the 8,000 Hz polling rate for instantaneous results. What’s more, 2-point actuation creates an unusual but impressive custom feel that improves your gaming experience.

Though I like the pre-installed switches, you can swap these out with the keycap puller and switch removal tool. Consequently, you can create the keyboard of your dreams without the need to solder and with limited expertise. This was great for newbie gamers who wish to experiment. The switches come with an impressive 100-million key press guarantee, so NZXT is providing a reliable and hard-wearing device.

I love wireless peripherals because I hate cable management. I’m not alone in this statement, but I’m always open to wired alternatives. The benefits usually outweigh the downsides and I like the low-latency connection and the lack of battery concern. Furthermore, some minor planning removes the cable management issues.

Usability.

I love RGB, but I’m happy to go without it if necessary. Fortunately, the Function 2 keyboard is loaded with RGB madness. If you so wish, you may allow the preloaded software to rule the roost. Yet, if you are feeling brave or creative, you can use the free-to-download software and customise your RGB or profile. This was great as it gives you as much or as little freedom as you wish.

If you’ve read my reviews, you know I’m pretty lazy. Subsequently, I normally punt for an easy life. Fortunately, the NZXT CAM software is straightforward to use and it requires little technical knowledge. What’s more, adjusting each profile and other key elements was a cinch. If you were to make an error, you can simply undo your work and start again. Therefore, the Function 2 keyboard is the ideal device for those who want an easy life or those who wish to be creative.

Finally, if you love to control your settings, media, or RGB with the touch of a button, you can with the media knob and the tactile side buttons. These handy tools are conveniently located and simple to operate. What’s more, it stops you from jumping into your settings when you are in the middle of a game.

Build quality.

If you want a well-designed and robust keyboard, you need to look no further. Every aspect of this device is built with comfort and longevity in mind. The keycaps are double-shot PBT for long-lasting fonts and a richer colour. Moreover, they resist unsightly grease stains and scratching. On top of this, the pre-lubed switches and plate-mounted stabilisers are remarkably smooth and are enjoyable to use when typing. I experienced no dead zones and every input was smooth and responsive.

On top of this, the case utilises a dual layer of foam for an enhanced acoustic experience. I love the clacky sound of mechanical devices, but I hate unwanted background noise. Fortunately, you enjoy every old-school click without any other noise. Finally, aerospace-grade aluminium has been used to improve rigidity. This creates a spectacular long-lasting case that will take some abuse.

Is the Function 2 keyboard worth it?

There are plenty of great gaming keyboards to choose from. However, you normally have to compromise, and that isn’t fun. Thankfully, the Function 2 keyboard packs an almighty punch without letting you down. If you want a straightforward experience, it ticks that box. Alternatively, maybe you like to experiment and try new switches or profiles? Well, it ticks those boxes as well. On top of this, it is lightning-fast and perfect for typing and gaming. Accordingly, it is sublime and I recommend buying it here!

Review: Tales of Arise – Beyond the Dawn

Tales of Arise – Beyond the Dawn hits the market roughly 2 years after the original release. This was a game I played and enjoyed. However, since reviewing it, I haven’t given it a second thought. This isn’t to say that it was bland or poor. Instead, I’d say it was a suitable RPG with smooth combat, an interesting story, and a large world to explore. Yet, I find it somewhat strange that the developers chose such a large gap before suckling their audience back in again.

This open-world RPG was developed and published by Bandai Namco. Furthermore, it is a single-player experience that takes place approximately 1 year after the original story. Accordingly, it is recommended to play the base game before tackling the fun but short DLC.

Tales of Arise – Beyond the Dawn tells a story of a new world.

Though the two factions live in harmony on one new planet, you cannot change old habits. Sadly, not everyone is happy with the coexistence and this causes fighting and disputes. A young girl called Nazamil is on the run. This half-Renan and half-Dahnan hybrid is the daughter of a Renan lord. However, her fate is in the hands of the gods and the team from the original must work hard to steer her on the right path.

The world design and vibrant monsters are as loud and colourful as you’ll remember. Yet, if you are new to the franchise, you’ll enjoy classic JRPG imagery and wonderfully unusual monsters to kill. Alongside this, every battle is an eye-catching but over-the-top affair. Subsequently, the high-energy gameplay takes a little getting used to. Once you are comfortable with the combinations and special powers, you’ll adore every cruel encounter.

Familiar mechanics.

Tales of Arise – Beyond the Dawn follows many of the original mechanics and ideas. Consequently, I’m not going to cover them in great detail. Instead, feel free to read my review in the hyperlink in the opening paragraph. The party management, item selection, and exploration elements are not changed. I guess the adage of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is relevant.

Where this changes, though, is its reliance on side quests from the NPCs. Now, this mechanic isn’t anything new, but Bandai Namco uses it as their progression tool. If you are a gamer who loves a rich central storyline and a solid path to follow, you may become frustrated. However, if you enjoy flitting between objectives whilst you explore a large world, then this will tick many boxes.

The not-so-good.

In a new world filled with political intrigue and danger, I was expecting the quests to answer more questions. Disappointingly, this wasn’t the case. Tales of Arise – Beyond the Dawn skirts around every issue and rarely gives you any details. It felt like a politician avoiding the obvious answers. Though this doesn’t affect the gameplay, I’d have loved the game to fill in some voids whilst setting the political landscape.

The main quests involving Nazamil use well-trodden ideas from the Arise series and this was disappointing. The developer had scope to create a wholesome and unique perspective that aligns with the political horizon. Instead, it flits and flows between something that is all too familiar. This isn’t to say it is a poor experience, I was just hoping for more.

Tales of Arise – Beyond the Dawn looks great.

Though there are some shortcomings, I loved the overall presentation. The visuals are clean and vibrant and the world is fascinating to explore. Alongside this, animation is buttery smooth and each combat encounter benefits as a consequence. Though it is typical of a JRPG, I didn’t care. I adored the OTT imagery and the varied environments.

The audio is loud, energetic, and hard to ignore. The music is a brilliant blend of upbeat and melancholy songs. This excellent combination enhances the emotion without being clichéd. Though the sound effects were occasionally uncomfortable, they worked well with the fantasy edge.

Responsive controls.

This has a strange blend of hectic combat and slow-paced exploration elements. Subsequently, the controls needed to be well-considered and balanced. Fortunately, it is refined as you walk through each vast area, but wonderfully responsive as you slice up each monster. As such, the control system couldn’t be better.

This DLC comprises 40 missions and around 15 hours of fun. There are the normal skill progression elements and plenty of NPCs to talk to. As such, there is some replay value and longevity. However, don’t expect this to grab your attention the same way the base game did.

Tales of Arise – Beyond the Dawn is a decent DLC.

DLC can be considered a bit of a cash cow. Occasionally, you get limited value and even less content. Thankfully, Tales of Arise – Beyond the Dawn offers plenty of missions and loads of interesting elements. However, I believe it missed a trick as the story could have covered the political landscape and many of the deep emotional connections. Though this is missing, it is still good and I recommend buying it here! Can you help Nazamil? Explore the world, help the locals, and keep the Lord’s daughter safe.

Review: Bangarang

Bangarang bucks my recent gaming trend. I’ve covered Don’t Be a Dik Dik and Hands Off My Pecker. Both of these card games are unashamedly aimed at adults. However, Bangarang is a family-friendly affair that is fun, loud, and pretty darn hectic. Accordingly, it is the ideal game for family get-togethers or Christmas day.

This short, sharp round-based experience is aimed at gamers aged 8+. Sadly, younger gamers will become confused and may not understand the finer elements of the rules. Yet, our 6-year-old enjoyed the silly actions and raucous behaviour. This funny game combines Pictionary and Charades. As such, plenty is going on as everyone helps the guesser solve the problem.

What’s in the box of Bangarang

  • The packaging is colourful and strong. Inside, the contents are snug and this prevents you from losing any bits.
  • Bangarang has 80 clue cards. Consequently, there are plenty of rounds to play before things get repetitive.
  • A whiteboard allows you to draw plenty of pictures.
  • A whiteboard marker is provided.
  • Learn the basics with the user guide.

How do you play Bangarang?

Bangarang is a straightforward game. Players will grab a card with five clues. Your clue leads to a different item and it is your responsibility to act, sound, draw out, or use body language to explain your clue. At the start of each round, you must select a card that highlights which method you may use. After this, you have a short time to get through your clues and score as many points as possible.

This simple gameplay approach lasts 12 rounds. At the end of the game, the team with the highest score wins. Sometimes this isn’t easy to keep on top of as the madness unfolds. However, I found that the action was fun whether you were winning or losing. Consequently, I wasn’t too worried about the result.

Usability.

Child-friendly games must be easy to play and even easier to master. Luckily, Bangarang ticks both of these boxes. Though it took me a couple of rounds to get into the swing of things, I found it easy to explain the fundamentals. Moreover, my kids picked it up easily and they loved the miming and the drawing element.

Some clues may be alien to an 8-year-old. Subsequently, we had to make adjustments to the game to help them feel included. Yet, these problems were few and far between and they thrived in the team environment.

The toughest part of the game is keeping the score going and understanding when people get the clues right. With so many people shouting, it was easy to lose track. However, I found this to be funny rather than annoying, so it created an energetic and amusing atmosphere.

Build quality.

Card and board games have to take some rough and tumble. People get drunk and the contents get damaged. Luckily, this game is hard-wearing and made to last. The clue cards are chunky and easy to hold. Additionally, the font is easy to read and the contrasting colours are pleasant to the eye.

The whiteboard marker is small, so don’t expect to draw a masterpiece. Yet, this matters not as you don’t have time to go crazy. Instead, you’ll draw basic pictures to get your point across. The weak point is the whiteboard pen. The nib could become damaged so a gentle touch is needed to ensure longevity.

Is Bangarang worth it?

Family games and Christmas go hand-in-hand. Therefore, you’ll want to stock up on games that are fun but inoffensive. Thankfully, Bangarang is hilarious to play and just the right side of competitive. Accordingly, it makes for a great Christmas gift and I recommend buying it here!

Review: Shogun Showdown

Developed by Roboatino and Published by Goblinz Publishing & Gamera Games, Shogun Showdown is a turn-based rogue-lite strategy RPG with a, never seen before, addictive gameplay loop.

Playing games for review has its ups and downs, mostly downs but every bad game with below-expectation gameplay and story is all worth it in the end for that one big fish, that one game that really makes you love gaming again. I can confidently say, with many hours on this turn-based addiction, Shogun Showdown is that game.

The little Shogun Showdown

Not a lot in terms of story, at least not worth harping on about. But there is a plot, I think.

You are a shogun who is trying to defeat these shadowy figures. Every time you get overwhelmed and die, you get reincarnated and must return to fight them all once more.

This continues till you reach the end and kill all the big baddies that the game has to offer. I would not know. I for the life of me could not get to the end.

Speaking of which, let’s talk about gameplay.

A brand new gameplay

Feel free to correct me on this but my experience with Shogun Showdown has been one of awe. The gameplay loop of this game is unique to me.

Before getting into the details. I would like to give the skimmer an idea of what I mean. It is the dark souls of turn-based combat.

The gameplay loop in itself is quite simple. You play on a 2d track where you can turn and walk left or right. The track starts at four platforms up to 8 depending on the round. Each movement, including turning, takes one turn.

You attack by using these cards provided to you, each requiring a certain amount of turns to recharge after use. Selecting a card and using them both count as different turns.

So that was the short of it but it gets complicated.

After each win, you get either a new card or an upgrade for your cards. The upgrades could be more damage or less cooldown but also fire damage, poison damage, etc.

This being a Rogue-lite, once you lose, you must start from the beginning. However, winning gives you special skull points which can be traded at the main menu for brand new upgrades.

This is only the tip of the iceberg. The more you play, the more things unlock. From new characters, weapons and even permanent skills. It is a genuine addictive hoot of a time!

My Addiction

I have not felt like this since I first got into Vampire Survivors. However, unlike Vampire Survivors, this game never reaches a point where you just have to quit. The systems at play make it so that you can keep on going because the games are quick and the upgrades are very heavily impactful to the gameplay.

I have been addicted to this since my first play through and even now as I write this review, I feel the urge to go back in and play my heart out.

Shogun Showdown is a rare gem. One of those games that hook you from the very first round and keep pulling you back for more. The addictive gameplay loop, the strategic depth, and the thrill of unlocking new cards, upgrades, and characters are all part of what makes it so compelling.

Shogun Showdown is the kind of game that reminds you why gaming is such an incredible experience. And trust me, once you start, you’ll be just as hooked as I am.

Now if you’ll excuse me, there’s a Shogun to reincarnate.

Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate has been available as a mobile game for a while. However, this is the first time I’ve dipped my toe into the murky mutant-filled waters. Consequently, I had no idea of what to expect and how challenging the “normal” mode would be. This title kicked my ass repeatedly, and I had to stop myself from swearing. Yet, once I got into the swing of things, I couldn’t put it down.

This action rogue-like was developed and published by Super Evil Megacorp. Moreover, it can be enjoyed alone or cooperatively. The latter option is where the game excels, but I spent most of my time as a lone warrior. This didn’t undermine my experience, but I’d have loved some backup during the more challenging stages.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate tells a tale of despair.

If you are familiar with the franchise, you’ll know how close the protagonists are. They are like a family and when one is hurt or in trouble, the team works together to help. Things take a turn for the worse when their father and Sensei Splinter is ratnapped. When he is taken to a mystical dimension by a strange being, the turtles begin to panic. However, they quickly pull themselves together and create a plan to save their master and the world.

The outlandish plot incorporates many of the moralistic cartoon elements. What’s more, the characters are full of sass and there are plenty of witty and sharp one-liners to endure. On top of this, the action is fast-paced and there is a sense of beat ’em up gameplay. Now, this may not feel like a traditional rogue-like, but 90% of the action sits firmly in this camp. Accordingly, if you are a fan of the genre, you’ll adore this Jr Hades experience.

Plenty of upgrades.

The action revolves around a repetitive gameplay loop. Though the rooms vary and no playthrough is the same, there are deja vu moments. 4 chapters and 4 bosses stand between you and Master Splinter. Yet, it wouldn’t be a rogue-like if there wasn’t a sting in the tail. As the action comes to its inevitable conclusion, your prize is stolen from you again. Subsequently, you must complete run after run in the hope of completing your quest.

You may select one of the turtles for each run. Each of the heroes has strengths and weaknesses and you must exploit these if you are to succeed. En route, you will upgrade your tools and unlock new skills. Water, ooze, fire, and more support you as you tackle waves of tough foes. Additionally, there are mini-boss battles to face, challenges to overcome, and a shop to buy new gear.

If this wasn’t enough, there are artefacts to give you buffs and the ability to improve an array of character skills permanently. Each of these elements was amazing as they let you create a hero to match your play style. Though there were layers of planning, luck played a massive part. Consequently, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate can be disgustingly cruel or spectacularly easy.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate looks amazing.

Each room was packed with hordes of manic enemies and obstacles to avoid. Moreover, the latter levels are hectic and this should have caused problems. Luckily, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate never stuttered or failed. I experienced no glitches and the frame rate was consistently high. On top of this, the contrasting colours help you to navigate each claustrophobic stage. Though things can get a little out of hand, the smooth animation and excellent camera angle help you to play this with ease.

The audio was harsh, loud, and in your face. It was exactly what I expected and I loved the aggressive soundtrack and the wonderful ambient sounds. Moreover, the sound effects have a fantasy edge that matches the superhero theme. My only complaint was the constant one-liners. The turtles never stop yapping and this was distracting. Yet, if you can ignore their talking, you’ll love the atypical superhero edge.

Exceptional controls.

Though I expected the action to be more refined, the developer has done a great job with the control layout. There is plenty of button-bashing because of the hack-and-slash style of combat. Yet, once you understand how each element supports your cause, you will slow down and let the magic get to work. Though this isn’t aimed towards a younger audience, I believe children aged 10+ will be able to master the complexities in no time.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate oozes replay value. Each run is unique and there are drip-fed mechanics and new ideas throughout. What’s more, there are many secrets to discover and plenty of mini-bosses to eliminate. If you then add in the multiplayer gameplay and the various character builds, there is plenty to keep you coming back for more.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate is an excellent rogue-like experience.

This genre has grown on me over the years. I find the loss of progress challenging but I adore the sense of risk vs reward. Consequently, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate gets its approach spot on. Aesthetically it hits the right notes. Furthermore, the combat is slick and I love the various character builds and different upgrades. Death is inevitable, but this simply makes you come back for more. Subsequently, though it is tough, I loved it and I recommend buying it here! Can you restore balance and rescue Splinter? Choose your hero, master your skills, and defeat Shredder.

Review: Tokidoki Flower Power glasses

The Tokidoki Flower Power glasses are perfect for gamer girls and female office workers who love to make a statement. These floral glasses have a beautiful retro feel and a sublime handmade metal and acetate frame. In addition, there are adjustable nose pads for enhanced comfort. Add the robust spring hinges, and you get a fantastic pair of gaming glasses.

If you work with computers or spend your day looking at a TV or phone, you will suffer from the side effects of blue light. Every screen and modern device floods your eyes with harsh blue light. Accordingly, you’ll experience dry eyes, itchy lenses, and fatigue. Furthermore, you may suffer from headaches and eye strain. This makes gaming and working an uncomfortable experience. Accordingly, you can remove these issues with GUNNAR’s patented lens technology.

The amber-tinted lenses deliver 65% blue light protection. Moreover, you enjoy 100% UV protection whenever you are out and about. The amber lenses deliver a slight colour hue that may not be ideal for graphic designers or artists. If this is the case, you can select the clear lens and still enjoy 35% blue light protection. Subsequently, your work needn’t suffer as you improve your eye health.

What’s in the box of the Tokidoki Flower Power glasses?

  • The box is compact and plain. However, it is tough and can be recycled.
  • The Tokidoki Flower Power glasses are delightful to look at. They are colourful and have some special Tokidoki Easter eggs.
  • A colourful microfibre cloth and soft case help to remove dirt and keep the glasses safe.
  • The hard case is perfect for your overnight bag.

Technical aspects.

Keeping your eyes safe whilst working from your desk is essential. Thankfully, the Tokidoki Flower Power glasses are stylish without jeopardising your eye health. Though they are non-prescription as standard, you can order -5 – +5 lenses for an additional cost. The decision between clear and amber-tinted lenses is quite straightforward. If your job requires pinpoint colour accuracy, then I suggest buying clear lenses. Though the blue light protection may be reduced, you still enjoy reduced fatigue and eye strain.

These glasses are part of GUNNAR’s legendary range. As such, they offer the G-Shield premium lens coating to reduce scratching and smudges. What’s more, they are anti-reflective and this is great if you love to stream or you work in front of a camera. Consequently, you can focus on your game without distracting your audience.

Build quality.

I love the technical aspects of these glasses. Yet, it is the unusual frame colour and the fantastic build quality that impressed me more. The Tokidoki Easter eggs were pleasant and I loved the clear acetate frame. On top of this, the flexible spring hinges improve comfort and longevity. The adjustable nose pads have a hypoallergenic finish and are made from titanium. Additionally, they have a Tokidoki logo laser engraved to add a flashy edge.

The glasses are kept safe with the delightful glasses case. This simple but reassuringly strong case keeps your glasses from becoming damaged on long journeys. If you don’t fancy using the hard case, a colourful soft case is a delightful alternative. Furthermore, you may clean your lenses with the soft microfibre cloth. This vibrant cloth is great to look at and I adored the unusual design.

Are the Tokidoki Flower Power glasses worth it?

Gaming glasses are becoming more mainstream. The benefits are great and you will enjoy longer gaming sessions and improved productivity. Alongside this, GUNNAR creates some impressive and unusual designs that appeal to every taste. Though the vibrant and retro style may not be for you, perhaps the Sweet Fruits Tokidoki glasses will be your cup of tea. Either way, if these glasses catch your eye, I recommend buying them here!

Review: Keylocker

Keylocker will make you scream and curse as its rhythm-based gameplay bores into your soul. Now, I can hear the shouts of “Get Gud”. Frankly, you wouldn’t be wrong. After all, my lack of robotic reactions was just one of the reasons why this game drove me to distraction. Alongside the brutal window of response, you must accept wave after wave of mindless combat. Sadly, this is enough to make the most patient individual scream the house down.

This JRPG turn-based title was developed by Moonana Inc. and published by Serenity Forge LLC. Moreover, it is a single-player experience that focuses on rhythmical action inputs. Accordingly, you need to be alert if you wish to make the most of this game. The desire to stand out from the crowd was a gamble. Unfortunately, it does not pay off as it holds it back.

Keylocker has a fantastic story.

This cyberpunk game is set in a phenomenal environment. Saturn has been colonised and music is banned. The doppelgangers were created to serve the caste for the benefit of the Saturnian Satellites. However, a rebellion is forming and the protagonist BOBO must use her skills to overcome the brutal regime and save music.

The plot unfolds through exceptional character interactions and micro-moments. Furthermore, the plot changes depending on which character build you plump for. This was great as it increases replay value and changes your tactical direction. Yet, no matter what hero you want to be, the core mechanics drag you down. Additionally, the annoying and senseless combat becomes tedious and this was a shame.

Pointless battles.

When a game focuses on rhythm-based combat, you’d expect each encounter to be thrilling and interesting. Unfortunately, Keylocker had other ideas. Many of the fights are used to fill time. What’s more, the Satellites (Saturn’s law enforcement), follow you around in their drones. As such, you do your best to avoid their attention but this is futile.

Unfortunately, no matter how much you try to run and hide, they always catch you. This leads to a turn-based affair of button bashing and luck. As your enemy flashes white, you just execute the button command. If you are successful, you’ll dodge, parry, or attack your foe. This is normally enough to end the encounter, but if you mistime things, you’ll get your ass handed to you. Thankfully, the developers let you restart each failed battle without the need to reload a save. This was necessary as I’m not sure I could stomach any more pointless action.

Keylocker looks amazing.

The biggest disappointment for me is how the exceptional setting and brilliant audio are not the focal points. The world is a glorious wash of neon lights and pixelated art. What’s more, the futuristic edge has a sinister tone that is uncomfortable to look at. Though the combat wasn’t my cup of tea, the animation was solid and well-executed. Yet, I can’t help but focus on the relentless battles and how much they taint the exploration elements.

The audio has a classic synth style that is futuristic, aggressive, and full of drama. The soundtrack complements the story and works well with the combat elements. Furthermore, the sound effects are odd and ridiculous, but perfect for the theme. As such, this is one element that the developer got spot on.

The controls will test you.

Rhythm-based gaming is hit or miss. Unfortunately, Keylocker gets this very wrong. I don’t know if it is me, the responsive nature of the controller, or an issue with the programming. Either way, the inputs felt sluggish and this drove me mad. It was a shame as had the window of opportunity been bigger, I’d have forgiven the never-ending combat.

Frustratingly, this has mountains of replay value and longevity. Each character build has various endings and there is plenty to see and do. Furthermore, the story is great to experience and I loved the lore and the different layers. As such, I wish the other elements were better. Unfortunately, I won’t test every approach, nor will I return for more. Yet, if you have rapid reactions, you may enjoy it.

Keylocker annoyed me.

There is so much potential that I’m annoyed at its shortcomings. Keylocker could and should have been much better. The rhythm-based mechanics are so clumsy and cruel that it leads to unnecessary frustration. Sadly, this will put many people off and that is a shame. Accordingly, if you enjoy this genre, you may wish to buy it here! Alternatively, if you lack razor-sharp reactions, you’ll probably want to give this a miss. Can you and the other rebels succeed? Play your music, overwhelm your opponents, and quash the overlords.

Review: Hands Off My Pecker

Hands Off My Pecker is a hilarious and simple card game. Furthermore, it is compact and ideal for camping or a day down the pub. You will chuckle repeatedly at this immature card game if you have a naughty sense of humour. Like Don’t Be A Dik Dik, this game relies on smut and witty innuendo. Accordingly, I wouldn’t advise that young children give it a go.

What I loved about this silly experience was the colourful imagery and the hilarious animal names. I sniggered as my childish humour took over. After all, who doesn’t love to grab a puss-ant or an aHolehole? These childish names get filthier the more you stare at them. Moreover, I’ve had to contain myself as I had plenty of jokes regarding the pussy (cat) card. Yet, this is a safe space and I best leave my 80s-inspired jokes out of this review.

What’s in the box of Hands Off My Pecker?

  • The compact packaging made me titter with delight. It is colourful, eye-catching, and wonderfully robust. As such, it shouldn’t get damaged when you throw it in your bag.
  • Hands Off My Pecker has a small deck of vibrant cards. The hard-wearing cards have a smooth finish that is scratch-resistant. Additionally, they can take some rough and tumble when a drink is being consumed.
  • Learn the rules with the quick start guide.

How do you play Hands Off My Pecker?

Hands Off My Pecker can be studied and mastered in minutes. However, there are 2 difficulty settings to keep you on your toes and extend longevity. This was great as expert card players will want a challenge from the off. 21 naughty animal cards are placed on the table in front of you. You must pick one card and move it to your side of the table. However, other players must be able to touch the card if necessary. A caller is selected and they must name a card and shout out the one to find.

For example, Pussy to Dik Dik. Every other player must find the Dik Dik and move it to their card pile. The person who won must become the caller and link the Dik Dik to another animal. For example, Dik Dik to Beaver. This merry-go-round continues until 1 player has 5 rudely named animals in their pile. To make things more challenging, there are penalties. Accordingly, if the caller touches a card or you touch the wrong card, you must sacrifice a cheeky animal and the game continues.

Tactics and luck.

What makes Hands Off My Pecker so good are the layers of unexpected tactics. If you have a player who looks to be winning, you call out their cards to reduce their lead. Unfortunately, this tends to create a bit of a bully culture, but who cares? After all, sharing is caring and taking their cards will lighten their load.

If you want to up the ante, you can flip the cards over to the grey sleeping side. Each animal portrait shows a snoozing creature without a name. Consequently, you must remember what each animal is called and pick the correct card. This was extremely challenging especially when you have 5 players looking for the same card.

Build quality.

A travel game has to be robust and compact. Luckily, Hands Off My Pecker ticks both of these boxes. The chunky cards feel great in your hand. Moreover, they are easy to pick up when they are on a flat surface. On top of this, the printing quality was impressive and I like the easy-to-read labels and the vibrant colours.

If you need a compact game that fits in your pocket or hand luggage, then this will work for you. The small box is lightweight and can easily be thrown in an overnight bag without taking up too much room.

Is Hands Off My Pecker worth it?

If you want a short and amusing card game for 3 to 6 people, this is the game for you. The inappropriate and borderline childish humour tickled me throughout. Additionally, the imagery is silly and I loved the build quality. Though this isn’t a game for kids, adults will cherish every immature moment. Subsequently, it is a great game and I recommend buying it here!

Review: AWAKEN- Astral Blade

In a year when MetroidVania games are making a triumphant return, is AWAKEN- Astral Blade worthy enough of your time? Or should it have been decommissioned long ago?

Bionic Boredom

2024 has been the year the 2D platformer genre got some much needed love, with the release of games like Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown and Nine Sols. Now, with the debut title from developer Dark Pigeon Games, AWAKEN- Astral Blade attempts to stake its claim in the genre, with mixed results. The plot in AWAKEN follows the story of Tania, a bionic operative who begins the game with a mission to explore the mysterious Horace Islands. Given this mission by her creator Dr Herveus, whom she calls father, Tania is tasked with tracking down a missing research group. The group had been studying a new and strange energy source known as Karpas that transforms wildlife and vegetation into mutants. That’s pretty much the bones of the story itself, with the clear emphasis being on Tania herself and her journey of exploration and mystery, coupled with her own personal journey of self discovery. I would describe it as a simple yet entirely forgettable story.

The story simply loses steam far too often and far too regularly for my liking. Tania herself is an intriguing and mysterious protagonist and I wanted to learn more about her past and origins. Her themes of self worth and self discovery, whilst longing to be seen as more than a weapon, are admirable but just so badly executed. I was disappointed in how poorly the game tells its story at times. Dialogue in the game is terrible and feels utterly lifeless. The game attempts to pour tonnes of lore into the game from the get go and this failed miserably for me as I felt exhausted at times with the exposition and context the dialogue was trying to give me. It felt in some ways that this was a sequel to a game with the amount of lore it was trying to give you. The English dub is also extremely poor and voiced lines are few and far between. The setting had me intrigued, but by game’s end, I had longed for the conclusion. A drawn out boring affair from start to finish but thankfully, gameplay takes it up a couple notches.

Combination Creativity

The gameplay in AWAKEN can be described as simple yet sweet. This is a quintessential hack and slash game. Tania has attacks that she can use both in the air or on the ground. Swinging the bionic sword that is grafted into Tania feels fluid and satisfying and it’s just fun to swing your way through enemies. Combos that you can pull off add extra cinematic feel to combat and help to heighten the tension in battle. I just wish there were more combos for Tania, as midway through the game, I had memorised the handful down to a tee. Tania can find different weapons throughout the game which have different abilities, such as the scythe which can get you out of moments where enemies crowd you out.

Souls like elements are found through the health potions which only refill once entering the next area. Boss battles are a highlight, with huge monsters taking up big chunks of the screen during the fights, creating an epic scale to the game. Sadly, the same cannot be said about the normal enemy types. Enemies in this game are awful and bland and frankly at times are so ridiculously designed that I felt sorry for them. Enemies often just stand in a position and mindlessly swing if you are in the vicinity and then go back to statuesque form. It’s very disappointing how poor these enemies are. Overall, a flawed but still satisfying combat experience.

With this being a 2D platformer, Tania has movement abilities which help you get out of difficult moments like the dodge ability and double jump. The gaps between unlocking these skills were well spaced out and gave me enough time honing that particular craft. A fairly robust skill tree for abilities and weapons is also on offer here which allows you to flesh out the combat system. In the MetroidVania games I have played, I have been frustrated with what I would describe as dead zone areas where I had no clue where to go and little to no direction. Thankfully AWAKEN does not suffer from this as its paths are wonderfully laid out and depicted with the superb in-game map. Every area felt like it had a purpose for me, whether it was through combat or the occasional puzzle the game throws at you. Fast travel is unlocked around a third of the way into the game, helping back tracking through areas immensely. Accessibility options are also decent enough, particularly in the difficulty setting, allowing you to focus more on the story if you choose. I found the overall difficulty of the game to be very low and I never felt under levelled. Again, overall a flawed but still satisfying combat experience.

Discovering Delightfulness

Whist I have mixed feelings on story and combat, the same cannot be said about the presentation. This game looks stunning in every area you explore. The background environments behind Tania look phenomenal and reminded me so much of the Ori series. Each location you enter is dripping in detail and vibrant colours: caves look damp, dark and dilapidated, whilst boss rooms have this grandioso feel and scale to them, which is fantastic. The use of animated backgrounds really helps great environmental storytelling and it’s a testament to the development team in how good this game looks. Similarly, Tania looks fantastic and is animated superbly; her character model is full of detail and vibrant colours. Apart from the terrible animations for the enemies, their character designs are also wonderful, with the energy mutant effects portrayed in a brilliantly grotesque manner. All the bosses also look superb and are huge set pieces on screen that are full of colour and detail. The one minor flaw to presentation are the UI and menus which are incredibly bland and basic but this is nothing to affect your experience significantly.

Sound design and musical score once again wield mixed results. Traversing as Tania sounds great, with her footsteps booming across cave floors and altar rooms, whilst sword slashes sound and feel powerful. Performing special moves and combinations show off Tania’s exertion in doing these intricate moves and is a great way to show her increasing desperation and exhaustion as the game plays out. Enemy sound design is virtually non existent besides the boss battles. This is disappointing and so lacklustre that I can barely remember what they actually sounded like. As mentioned before, there is some voiced dialogue within the game but it is so infrequent and terribly voiced that it once again falls into the category of forgettable. The same can be said about the musical score which is just a slew of short light melodies which repeat themselves throughout each area. I wish more time could have been spent perfecting this score as some parts sound great but it loses momentum when you’ve heard the same melody hundreds of times on repeat by games’ end.

Verdict

AWAKEN- Astral Blade is truly a mixed bag across the board. Engaging combat and beautiful environments and design are real high points in this streamlined version of the MetroidVania genre. However, a forgettable and boring story which fails to build upon the promise of an intriguing protagonist, poor enemy design and a middling musical score stop this game from reaching its potential and make the game seem a cheap imitation.

Review: Lift 2 Symm Gaming Mouse

The Lift 2 Symm Gaming Mouse from NZXT is a fantastic peripheral. At first glance, it has a subtle and understated appearance. However, the deeper you delve, the more impressive this mouse becomes. The hollow underside exposes the internal elements. Moreover, there is a grippy body for accuracy and comfort.

The symmetrical design is ideal for different hand positions and my wrist and fingers never felt strained. What’s more, there are DPI and optical switches for lightning-fast response rates. Accordingly, this is a phenomenal accessory if you love to game. Alongside this, the ridiculously lightweight design reduces fatigue. Therefore, if you enjoy marathon gaming sessions or you work from home, this is the perfect device for you.

What’s in the box of the Lift 2 Symm Gaming Mouse?

  • The packaging is compact but professional. Furthermore, NZXT highlights their environmental approach with the easy-to-recycle box.
  • The Lift 2 Symm Gaming Mouse looks great. The simple design is understated but reassuringly well-built. Additionally, it is a wired peripheral to remove any power concerns.
  • A useful guide gets you started.

Technical aspects.

Getting the right mouse for your needs is easier said than done. If you are obsessed with gaming, you want an accurate and rapid device that won’t let you down. As such, optical switches and high DPI are a must. On top of this, zero latency inputs are essential if you don’t want to fall behind. Thankfully, the Lift 2 Symm Gaming Mouse ticks these boxes. The 26K DPI optical sensor delivers unrivalled 1:1 tracking. Consequently, it reacts to every twitch, nudge, and sweep of your hand. This is particularly impressive whenever you play an FPS. Though the high-speed movement takes some getting used to, it is a game-changer that will make you stand out.

Alongside this, it delivers an 8,000 Hz polling rate for instantly recognised mouse clicks. When you combine this with the optical switches, you experience unprecedented input accuracy and speed. I was blown away by the accuracy and instantly retired my ROCCAT mouse as a result. Though I’m not a massive FPS fan, I enjoyed using this device with every game I played and it was impressive when I surfed the net or edited articles.

Finally, the wired approach may be a deal breaker for some people. Though a wireless design is cleaner and easier to manage, I like the low-maintenance wired approach. Moreover, the low-latency inputs make up for the cable management headache.

Build quality.

Gaming peripherals need to be hard-wearing and pleasant to the eye. Unlike some of its peers, the Lift 2 Symm Gaming focuses on a refined design. Available in black or white, this mouse doesn’t have RGB or vibrant lighting. Instead, it impresses with its comfortable finish and grippy edges. On top of this, there are 2 PTFE glider plates to reduce friction. This was superb as it was easy to maintain and it matched the clean finish.

The Paracord cable is lightweight and tough. Furthermore, it resists tangling to assist your cable management. The front-positioned cable delivers a balanced style that complements the symmetrical design. Additionally, it is perfect if you use either a claw or fingertip grip. No matter your preference, there is no pressure on your wrists and this improves your gaming experience.

Though lightweight peripherals aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, I couldn’t help but adore the 58g total weight. If you prefer a heavier mouse, this won’t be for you. However, the remarkably light shell was great to use. When you combine this peripheral with a woven mouse mat, you enjoy sweeping and accurate movements that cannot be matched.

Is the Lift 2 Symm Gaming Mouse worth it?

NZXT is renowned for its quality PC hardware. Accordingly, I knew this well-priced gaming mouse would be a winner. Available for under £55, this packs an almighty punch. The Optical switches and sensors are spectacular. What’s more, the symmetrical design and lightweight nature are comfortable and simple to use. As such, if you want a light, accurate, and lightning-fast device, I suggest buying it here!

Review: Sweet Fruits Tokidoki – Banana Split glasses

The Sweet Fruits Tokidoki – Banana Split glasses from GUNNAR are perfect for gamers who love a feminine finish without the flashy style. These cat-eye style glasses offer GUNNAR’s incredible eye-health benefits. Furthermore, they show off your love of Tokidoki thanks to their minute Easter eggs. On top of this, the acetate frame is strong and the flexible spring hinges ensure they are comfortable to wear.

Though the style may not be for everyone, they will appeal to a niche gamer-girl audience. As such, if you fall for their charms, you can enjoy reduced eye fatigue and eye strain without breaking the bank. These affordable but subdued glasses are ideal if you spend hours in front of your phone, TV, or monitor. No one likes headaches or the negative effects of blue light. Consequently, you can reduce these problems immediately if you invest in a pair of these glasses.

What’s in the box of the Sweet Fruits Tokidoki – Banana Split glasses?

  • The box is understated but strong. Additionally, it can be recycled.
  • The Sweet Fruits Tokidoki – Banana Split glasses are lightweight and robust. I picked the clear 35% blue light protection lenses. However, you can pick an amber tint or sunglasses. Furthermore, -5 to +5 prescription lenses can be purchased for an additional price.
  • A hard case enhances the stylish finish.
  • Show off your colourful side with the microfibre cloth and soft protective case.

Technical aspects.

Keeping your eye health protected is a priority. If you spend hours in front of a screen or you like to game when commuting to work, you’ll probably struggle with eye strain and headaches. Moreover, your eyes are likely to be itchy as the glare and environmental factors will dry out your lenses. Thankfully, the Sweet Fruits Tokidoki – Banana Split glasses can help to reduce these issues. GUNNAR’s patented lens technology helps to keep your lenses moist whilst reducing the negative impact of blue light and screen glare. This is a godsend whenever you work for extended periods.

If you are a designer or someone who needs 100% colour clarity, the clear lenses offer the best compromise. Though they do not have a 65% protection rating like the amber lens alternative, the crystal-clear lens allows you to see every colour perfectly. Subsequently, you can get on with your day without worrying about silly mistakes.

Finally, the clear lenses sit at the EPIC performance level. This is GUNNAR’s way of rating their products and the technology that is included. These impressive glasses have anti-smudge and anti-reflective material for a more comfortable experience. Additionally, if you stream, you don’t want your audience to become distracted. Luckily, this won’t happen with these incredible gaming glasses.

Build quality.

I’m pretty careful with all my accessories. I don’t see the benefit in throwing around something that I like and use regularly. However, if you have a bit of a temper, or you are naturally clumsy, sometimes mistakes can happen. Thankfully, the Sweet Fruits Tokidoki – Banana Split glasses are robust and hard-wearing. The acetate frame will resist scratches and heavy handling. Moreover, the spring-loaded hinges will adjust to wider faces. This was perfect as they felt comfortable without adding unnecessary pressure to my temples.

Alongside this, the hard and soft cases were pleasant to handle. If you are chucking these glasses in a carry-on bag, the hard case will keep them safe. However, the soft case is perfect if you are travelling to work or you wish to keep the glasses protected at your desk. On top of this, the microfibre cloth is soft and this helps to reduce scratches to your lenses.

Are the Sweet Fruits Tokidoki – Banana Split glasses worth it?

As a man, these glasses are not for me. Yet, I can see why they are appealing. The larger cat-eye lenses are distinctive and I love the simple dark acetate frame. The Tokidoki Easter egg on the frame is attractive and the clear lenses are great if you work with colour. Additionally, the eye health benefits will enhance your productivity and reduce headaches and eye strain. Accordingly, if you want a stylish pair of glasses to impress your friends and followers, buy them here!

Review: Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland is 90s personified. The basic platforming, vibrant colours, and easy ideas reminded me of the best Mega Drive and PlayStation games. Furthermore, it has a pixelated finish and the ability to play in glorious HD. As such, it’ll appeal to retro gamers and those who like a modern approach.

This platforming adventure title was developed and published by The MIX Games Inc. Furthermore, it is a single-player and couch cooperative title. As such, if you have young kids or a partner who loves to game, you can team up and overcome every obstacle you face. My only complaint is the ridiculously simple action. Unfortunately, I never felt challenged and this was disappointing. Though each stage delivers unique surprises and obstacles, it won’t push you to your limits.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland tells a silly tale.

Whenever you have babies as protagonists, you know the plot will be a little outlandish. Well, Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland has a silly and predictable plot that doesn’t disappoint. The 4 babies must use their skills and their agility to explore each key area of their house. Using their imagination, they create an exciting environment that is fun to explore.

Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil love the Raptor TV franchise. Accordingly, when they see an advert for the latest computer game, they let their imagination go wild. The surrounding world evolves into a computer playground and they must explore and defeat each boss as they collect raptor coins. This treasure is used to open the mysterious Raptor door. As such, the babies are desperate to collect every coin and see what surprises lay behind that door.

Rudimentary ideas.

I normally love a straightforward affair. Being able to pick up a game and get straight into the action is appealing. However, when a title fails to evolve and everything is set at one level, it gets somewhat frustrating. This is exactly what happens when you tackle Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland. The basic concepts are aimed towards a younger audience. Yet, its key demographic will be older gamers who remember the original TV series. Consequently, I was a little confused as things unfolded.

Though the mechanics are easy to understand, I’m not sure that young children will be able to play this alone. There are plenty of minor puzzles to overcome and some platform elements that require finesse. Subsequently, younger gamers will struggle with these moments. What’s more, the boss battles can be tough and understanding how to defeat each antagonist is not always easy. Therefore, this is a title that is best played as a pair if you have younger gamers in your house.

It is missing some key elements.

Retro platformers excelled because of their challenging moments and hidden collectables. Unfortunately, Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland misses this concept. Every key item is easy to find and progressing through each stage wasn’t tough. Yes, there are some branching pathways, but these will rarely challenge you. What’s more, if you miss a Raptor coin, it doesn’t prevent you from moving on. As such, you can fly through each stage and the game continues regardless.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland looks great.

Though the core gameplay ideas didn’t float my boat, visually it is great. I loved both the modern visuals and the pixelated graphics. The latter filled me with nostalgia as it screamed Sega Mega Drive. However, the polished HD graphics were perfect for a modern audience. The vibrant colours and excellent character models were nice to see. Moreover, the animation is smooth and climbing ropes, moving boxes, and solving puzzles were fun.

I watched Rugrats as a youngster and the audio brought back many happy memories. I love the music and the sound effects. Additionally, the sound bites and key TV clips bring everything together. Though it doesn’t do anything new, I loved the developer’s attention to detail.

The controls were occasionally clumsy.

The control system is focused towards younger gamers. As such, the layout is easy to understand and you’ll have it mastered in no time. However, things were somewhat clumsy when it came to the climbing element. Furthermore, stacking boxes was somewhat annoying as it wasn’t as accurate or as easy as I’d have liked. Subsequently, though it is straightforward to play, there are some issues to be aware of.

Each of the levels has 4 raptor coins to collect. Furthermore, there is a boss battle and loads of minions to overcome on each stage. Consequently, there is plenty to do as you explore each imaginative zone. Yet, once you tackle each level and grab every coin, there is no reason to return and that was unfortunate.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland was a decent game.

This will not set the world alight. The basic gameplay and rudimentary action are pretty familiar. If you then consider the simple platforming mechanics and easy puzzles, it doesn’t test you. However, it is aimed towards a younger audience and anything harder would have been unfair. Accordingly, though it didn’t test me, my kids enjoyed the colourful worlds and loud audio. As such, it is a decent game and I recommend buying it here! Can you open Raptor’s door? Complete each stage, destroy the bosses, and collect every coin.
