Hitman GO releases globally today for iOS devices and will hit the Play Store for Android users very soon.

War Thunder Update 1.39 + Ground Forces and more coming soon

0

Gaijin Entertainment has announced that update 1.39 for War Thunder is now live. This major update is a milestone for Gaijin Entertainment as they release several new features including the support for user generated content, squadron battles, the addition of even more planes, and early access to Ground Forces Expansion.

USSR_Spitfire

War Thunder now supports user-generated content and players have access to special downloadable tools.  From now on users are able to create their own planes, from adding the tiny details inside the cockpit to truly personalizing their plane’s skin or creating a completely new model. A quick-check system ensures that newly created planes fit within the game’s parameters before allowing players to use them on local PC in custom missions or share them with the community.

TwinMustang

Players can go one-step further in the creative process by using stand-alone maps and missions editor. Players can ingeniously build upon existing maps, using them as a blueprint, or go off on an inspired tangent to devise their own brand of new maps. Players can share as well as test out user-generated content via a special area housed within the War Thunder forum.

1.39 also offers Squadron Battles – competitive events for player created factions complete with PvP-rating for squadrons, calculated by the Elo system. In addition, update includes an additional 18 new aircraft, changes in the interface and improvements for player progression. Last, but not least, update 1.39 will allow those players who currently possess codes for the Ground Forces Expansion Closed Beta to be the first to play as either a tank or an aircraft 24/7, but not from the very start. Gaijin Entertainment will slowly implement Ground Forces Expansion into the update to ensure seamless gameplay.

Thunderjet

The new mission called Battle of Kursk is based on a real life historic engagement that took place July – August 1943 where the Soviets defeated the German strategic offensive, thereby turning the tide on the Eastern Front. In the game, Kursk will provide players with AI-tanks, field artillery and planes fighting alongside real players.

Review: Trials Fusion

Does it still have that special something, or has multi-format release diluted its charm?

11

The first time I wrote about Trails, it was 2008. The old next-gen was really starting to do some numbers, just prior to the global downturn, and I was working for an Xbox 360 magazine. Trials wasn’t announced or even thought of as a title coming to Xbox, but I was convinced this incredible little indie game work capture the public’s imagination on the burgeoning Xbox Live Arcade service.

A little later on that year, Trials HD was announced, and began a journey for a small developer that would define its history, and shape its future. Trails HD’s appeal was instant, and spawned incredible review scores, and the obvious and even better sequel, Trails Evolution. Both games were classics, so you could imagine the excitement of booting Fusion up for the first time.

First impressions aren’t brilliant, mind, with some content available immediately at launch, such as the standard single-player game, and the track creator, while Multiplayer will become available after launch with an update. These two game modes alone are worth the purchase price – for the excellent Trials experience, and a track editor you know will give birth to some beautiful user generated tracks, but also some entirely unexpected gems of community creation.

17

That said, the lack of a smaller, yet still critical feature being available at launch doesn’t leave you brimming with confidence from the off. With any luck, these doubts will dissipate under the glow of another incredible single-player campaign that drives competition between friends, and spurs you on as you reset after reset to climb the leaderboards.

As you progress, you’re taken through tutorials which border on the pedantic, and begin your assault on the courses for the best times on beginner tracks. These then progress upward, through to extreme at the very top end. Or, the really, bloody hard courses, if you will (expect to fail, constantly, until you break controllers).

Something doesn’t feel right, and remember, this is a seasoned Trails rider. No, it’s not the awful menu music, or the riffing on the Portal 2 story for most of the campaign. It’s a couple of things; the track design, and the difficulty curve.

Redlynx has always been exceptional at track design, using the editor to create the tracks, but this time, the future setting doesn’t really allow the designers to have too much fun. Everything’s either clean, post-apocalyptic, or just like any other trials track from Evolution or HD. I think they’re just a little more fun.

With regards to the difficulty curve, it’s more like a step. Once you learn to FMX (the new addition where you pull of tricks mid-jump), then things get harder quickly, when for three areas previously, you can zoom from A to B without a single reset. It’s a small niggle for newcomers to the series, but a valid one no-the-less.

And then I realise there’s a couple of things I’m not considering. Of course, you should always compare sequels to predecessors, but they should also be able to stand apart, offering something new, or something different. Trials Fusin does this, and with some style.

50

The setup of the areas (previously events), is a lot more accessible now for the new player, and while the tutorials are a little eager to explain how to accelerate and forces you to complete each tutorial to unlock tracks, Trials isn’t for everyone; but there has to be an entry point for newcomers.

While selling over six million copies of Trials Evolution on Xbox 360 is a huge achievement, there’s a whole new gamer (the PlayStation fan) that’s never played Trails before. Which brings us to the second thing we really need to consider; controllers.

Neither Xbox One, nor PS4 controllers have been used for previous Trials outings, and while we haven’t tried the PS4 version, the Xbox One version makes excellent use of the most popular pad design, while integrating the new into something useful. Something as simple as per trigger feedback on breaking and accelerating seems insignificant, but when your entire game is based around muscle memory, and low latency controls, the smallest of details makes all of the difference.

All things considered, and an entire replay through the whole game afterwards, the job that Redlynx has done to deliver the same addictive Trials experience over PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 has to be applauded, especially with its own technology, and a only a small team to work with are considered.

Despite originally doubting Trails Fusion and wondering whether I needed fire up the 360 to remember the good old days, Trails Fusion delivers the most important thing for Trials fans – that ‘one more go’ mentality. That single button press to reset, and the will to leave everything on the track to shave as much time off as possible.

Trails Fusion is the essential, and best digital download for all next-gen formats, and sits well alongside huge AAA releases on Steam. With no less than six DLC packs planned over the next 12 months, Trials’ charm will endure for a long time after launch, no doubt bridging the gap between Fusion, and the next Trails title.

While Trials Fusion won’t be the pinnacle of the series that hard-core fans might have wanted, it is an excellent addition, and the ideal introduction for PlayStation 4 owners. It’s a showcase of addictive gameplay, and a shining example to developers of the success you can have if you get the basics right.

Big Upgrades Come to Guild Wars 2 with First-Ever Feature Pack

0

NCSOFT and ArenaNet, the developer of the Guild Wars franchise, has released the “April 2014 Feature Pack”, the first-ever Guild Wars 2 update dedicated exclusively to adding and enhancing game features for the award-winning MMO. The “Feature Pack” represents ArenaNet’s move towards releasing content updates that are focused on features and game systems. Going forward, these packs will be separate from the studio’s living world releases, which have primarily been the vehicle for introducing new storylines and story-driven game play. Just as with living world, feature packs and all new content added to Guild Wars 2 are available to players free of charge and without a subscription fee.

GW2_2014-04_Feature_Pack_-_Wardrobe_Outfit

One of the biggest updates in ArenaNet’s highly anticipated inaugural “Feature Pack” is the introduction of a megaserver system. The system makes it easy for people to find game maps populated with friends, guild members and similar players. Other major new features in the pack include a new wardrobe system, dozens of new traits, and upgrades to PvP. The new content touches on game play, quality of life and social play, meaning what’s being implemented today promises to enhance the experience of every player in Guild Wars 2.

ArenaNet took a novel approach in introducing the pack, rolling out each major new upgrade individually and outlining what it means for players and the game. The studio created an “April 2014 Feature Pack” online hub where players could learn about changes in detail through videos, live streams and developer blog posts. While the site will remain live, the best way for players to experience just how much the “Feature Pack” will change the way they play Guild Wars 2 is to log in today.

GW2_2014-04_Feature_Pack_-_Wardrobe_01
As a rundown of highlights for today’s release, here are major new features being implemented in Guild Wars 2 and what they mean for players:

Megaserver System: ArenaNet’s megaserver technology is designed to intelligently bring players together to enrich the open world experience of Guild Wars 2. This system dynamically opens and closes maps to accommodate player activity while bringing players from different home worlds together. As part of these exciting changes, ArenaNet is restructuring the schedules of its open world boss encounters and allowing guilds to kick off the most challenging events to be found in the world of Guild Wars 2.

Traits Unleashed: ArenaNet is introducing 40 new traits which will impact every trait line of every profession. The acquisition of traits is changing. Players will no longer have to pay to unlock trait tiers, but will be rewarded with new tiers as they reach the appropriate level. To round out the update, players can now unlock traits through feats of bravery and daring – a whole new horizontal progression system that allows players to customise their character’s build through gameplay.

Account Wardrobe: The Account Wardrobe system makes it easy to customise the look of all your characters by sharing cosmetic items across your entire account. Every skin you unlock in Guild Wars 2 will now be accessible to each and every character on your account. Additionally, dyes will become account unlocks, making it simpler than ever to find just the right shade for every character.

PvP Reward Tracks and Gear Unification: As part of the Wardrobe system, the idea of PvP weapons and armour will go away. Each player will keep their look consistent across PvE and PvP, although players will continue to be on a statistically even playing field in competitive PvP. As part of this update, ArenaNet is introducing PvP Reward Tracks, which allow players to choose which rewards they’re working towards. These rewards can be anything from dungeon weapons and armour sets to region-specific drops from Tyria, and even the building blocks of Legendary weapons.

GW2_2014-04_Feature_Pack_-_PvP_Reward_Tracks

Social, Balance, and Account Updates: With significant rune and sigil updates, Looking For Group tool improvements, critical damage balancing, and account-bound Ascended and Legendary items, the features in the “April 2014 Feature Pack” will bring exciting changes to every part of Guild Wars 2.

Review: Kinect Sports Rivals on Xbox One

Are you ready for Kinect Sports Rivals? Here’s our review.

Roadshow Shooting

Kinect Sports Rivals is the new game from Rare Studios, who brought us such games as Kinect Sports on the Xbox 360. This time the sports take place on an island, and the scenery is amazing.

The first thing you need to do before you can play is set up your Champion. This involves you standing in front of Kinect whilst being scanned. The whole process only takes a few minutes, and to give you an idea of how it works, here is a video I made during a recent visit to Rare Studios:

Unlike previous Kinect games, this process seemed to work very well in a small room (the room I did the review in, not the canteen at Rare). I was particularly impressed how it detected I was wearing glasses and asked me to remove them, and later in the process told me I could now put them back on. I know it’s only a small touch but I liked it. All through the creation process the voice of David Tennant guides you through what you need to do, so that will certainly be a plus for some people.

Once your Champion has been created you can easily tweak various features such as hair colour, facial hair and so on. Once you are happy it’s time to move on to the game itself.

Wake Racing

Roadshow Wakerace

You are introduced to your Coach who explains how the controls work and what you need to do – then it’s straight into the first sport – Wake Racing. This was included as part of the Kinect Sports Rivals Pre Season free download when the Xbox One was released, so if you played that you will be familiar with how it works. Once you have completed all the requirements it’s time for you to race in a team event. Only one you have completed this team event will you move onto the next event, and only once you have completed all the team event sports will you be able to play whichever sport you want.

Wake Racing has five different courses to play and this is one of the sports that actually works well if you are sitting or standing.

Bowling

Roadshow Bowling

Bowling was one of the original Kinect Sports games and it makes a welcome return here. This version of bowling provides better control over the ball and you can even see if you hand is open or closed.

Climbing

Roadshow Climbing

Climbing was one of those sports that I wasn’t really that bothered about playing – then I played it and I found that I really enjoyed it. There are six different courses to play on and it is a lot of fun to actually pull your opponent off the wall and watch him fall – er, I mean use skill to pass by your opponent. Yeah, that’s it. You can also do little jumps to help get you to the top quicker. You do need to make sure that you have enough space in the room you are playing in though, more so than any of the other sports, with the possible exception of Tennis.

Soccer

Roadshow Soccer

Soccer is another returning game from Kinect Sports – this time you have a wall of virtual defenders you need to get past in order to score that elusive goal.

Target Shooting

Target Shooting was designed to offer the variety of a low-effort, high-impact sport with plenty of visual feedback. It’s a real test for your powers of observation, memory and strategy; being able to steal your opponent’s targets makes for great disruptive play, especially in split-screen. You can even move your body to dodge incoming fire. I actually found this one quite frustrating at first, but eventually you get the hang of it.

Tennis

Roadshow Tennis

Tennis was originally in Kinect Sports: Season 2, and it makes a welcome return. It’s actually the sport I enjoyed the most although your arms ache after playing it for a while, so at least you get a work out! Like Climbing, you do need to make sure you have enough room to play.

Final Thoughts

Overall I thought Kinect Sports Rivals was a fun game. The use of Kinect 2.0 was very good (I honestly don’t believe that Kinect 1.0 could have done anything near what this does) and means that I didn’t need a room the size of a small car park to play it. Yes, there are times when the game tells me that I am slightly out of range or to move a bit when I haven’t really moved, but it’s easy to adjust position and carry on (as long as you have some room). Don’t get me wrong though, there is certainly a lot of room for improvements with Kinect. You can also you voice commands to navigate around the menus if you need a rest from moving your arms around!

One thing that can be a little frustrating is the amount of time you spend sitting watching loading screens. You really want to be playing so having to wait what feels like an eternity isn’t great. Also you can’t skip the cut-scenes either!

Also it would have been nice to have had the opportunity to just jump in with some quick play of a particular sport rather than having to go through the training, then the team events, but you only have to go through that once though.

The Champion creation process was really slick and whilst it wasn’t necessarily perfect it was very easy to tweak your look, and in fact, that can be quite fun too!

Kinect Sports Rivals is not a game aimed at hardcore gamers – it’s aimed at people who want to have fun, play as a family or with a group of friends, and just have a laugh, and at that is succeeds. Yes, some of the games are more fun than others, and some of them work better than offers, but overall you will have fun, and that’s what its all about after all. The only real downside is the room size requirements, although they are certainly better than on previous games. Just make sure you have as much space as possible to play the game or you will find yourself getting frustrated.

With more sports to be added over the coming months, I am looking forward to seeing what else Kinect Sports Rivals brings to the party.

Thank you to Xbox for the review copy.
