Review: Sunset Overdrive

sunset-overdrive-e3-propain-launcher

It’s rare to find a game that you’re not convinced by, but then, in the final months before release, get really excited for. This was very much the case with Sunset, after its uninspiring reveal at E3 2013. Microsoft devoted plenty of time to Insomniac’s baby, but it wasn’t until E3 June of this year that we really saw what all the fuss was about, and that fuss was about fun.

With no reservations, I’m happy to say that Sunset Overdrive is the best fun I’ve had on an Xbox One, and an absolutely essential purchase.

Insomniac games hasn’t really delivered during the past few releases for PS3, nor for its first Multiformat release, Fuse. Resistance was slowly dying as a franchise, and Fuse was met with a lukewarm reception. Sunset was perhaps Insomniac’s last chance at a truly AAA game – and you can tell they went all-in.

Visually, the unique, intrusive graphical style speaks volumes for the kind of game you’re going to play, a mixture of Amped’s bombastic presentation mixed with the nearly cel-shaded appeal of Borderlands, but with the colour, contrast and brightness turned up to 11. Offering a small, if well populated open world with a solid 30fps, Sunset shows you Sunset City from the off – and what it hints at, and what becomes very apparent, Is that Sunset City isn’t just a city; it’s playground.

sunset-overdrive-e3-rollercoaster-1

Rogue Energy Drink. Overdrive Delirium XT, zombies. It’s a predictable plot, but one which will mean nothing in the story of your time with Sunset – it’s not so much about the plot, but how you decide to play. Yes, there is one, and it’s pretty weak, but the tongue in cheek jokes, mixed with slightly outdated pop culture references of the script are a delight.

All of this doesn’t really mean much until the first time you grind, and expand this new found amazing ability to grinding from one building to the next, switching to underneath enemies, and back into the grind above with the press of a button, before laying on a barrage of fucking mental ammunition to destroy your targets. That’s when you realise that Sunset Overdrive is the bastard son of Jet Set Radio Future, and a riot to play.

Hidden among the aforementioned ‘story’ there’s a solid risk-reward system for the more hard-core among you, with style points increasingly allowing you to ‘amp’ your abilities, and effectively modifying your guns. When you’re dealing with guns that fire teddy bears, you know you’re going to lay down some fire, and do it with a smile.

You’re looking at a good 10-14 hours for the single player for the average gamer (I played across a few evenings), but it may be a little shorter for some. Chaos Squad co-op missions will increase its shelf life in your collection, but while that’s an interesting compliment to make the game more social, it’s not nearly as satisfying as the main game,

Sunset Overdrive is another cracking addition to Xbox one’s line-up this Christmas, and a worthy exclusive in its own right. A game that may have just rescued Insomniac from turning to non-AAA development, Sunset is an endorsement of the vision Insomniac had for the title from the very beginning. Microsoft should be commended for backing this to the hilt; a game in which it’s hard to describe in that easy one-line marketing pitch.

Actually, I think that’s easy. It’s bloody brilliant.

Also available today for free for all Xbox One players is the classic 1990 Subaru Legacy RS, which will release alongside the Falken Car Pack for “Forza Horizon 2”.

AlfaRomeo4C_WM_FalkenCarPack_ForzaHorizon2

2014 Alfa Romeo 4C

The 4C has everything needed for spirited driving and even a few creature comforts. with any sports car built by Italians, the looks are only the icing. It boasts a carbon-fiber tub between twin aluminum sub-frames, and a rip-roaring turbo-charged four-cylinder with enough gusto to give anyone a permanent grin. The engine is behind the cabin, where it should be – resulting in visceral driving experience that will have you wishing for the next off-camber corner.

BMWM4_WM_FalkenCarPack_ForzaHorizon2

2014 BMW M4 Coupe

The new twin-turbo inline six (replacing the naturally-aspirated V8 of last year’s M3) is a spectacular performer. Power delivery comes on strong and early and encourages short shifting, versus the tradition of wringing power out of the top end of M-model cars. BMW says the smaller, lighter motor enhances handling. The result is a car with plenty of grip but can still wag its tail if encouraged to do so.

ChevroletSuperSport_WM_FalkenCarPack_ForzaHorizon2

2014 Chevrolet SS

The first rear-wheel-drive sedan in the Chevy line-up in 17 years is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. At a glance, the SS is a smart-looking four-door but, under the hood, is a V8 pushing out more than 400 horsepower. When given a nudge it responds with a roar, hitting 60 mph in less than five seconds. As you tour around the SS, its intents become more obvious, with a wide stance, plenty of rubber, and the two large exhaust pipes. Once behind the wheel, everything makes sense. The gauges light up, you slam your right foot down, and the world gets much, much faster.

LamborghiniJalpa_WM_FalkenCarPack_ForzaHorizon2

1988 Lamborghini Jalpa

It has been referred to as the baby Lambo, the smaller sibling to the legendary Countach. In fact, the only thing that is smaller about the Jalpa (pronounced Hal-pah), is the transverse-mounted V8, opposed to the similarly-mounted V12 of the Countach. That smaller engine granted the Jalpa much better drivability, but sacrificed little in performance, with impressive 0-60 times and a conservatively stated top speed of 146 mph. Over its six-year production run, the Jalpa sold nearly 420 units, and was discontinued when Chrysler took over Lamborghini operations in 1988.

Toyota2000GT_WM_FalkenCarPack_ForzaHorizon2

1969 Toyota 2000GT

Rare, beautiful, and startlingly expensive, the 2000GT has all the attributes of a European supercar. It also gained some fame as James Bond’s ride in the film “You Only Live Twice,” as a convertible (although Toyota never offered one from the factory). With less than 400 ever built, they’re still expensive, with even the shoddiest examples commanding six figure prices. But the sound of that lusty six at full tilt is worth the price of admission by itself.

SubaruLegacy_WM_FalkenCarPack_ForzaHorizon2

1990 Subaru Legacy RS

Subaru brought new game to 1990 dealer showrooms, putting aside its smaller, quirkier wagons and sedans for the new Legacy line. These cars were much more substantial in size, quality, and amenities. The Legacy RS Turbo was the most powerful model and still has a strong following among “Subie” enthusiasts. Its off-road racing record is considerable and proved its endurance and ability to perform, and this was prior to Subaru’s dominance of the WRC. The highly desirable EJ20G engine later used in the WRX generated more than 200 horsepower and provided a new level of performance. Subaru all-wheel drive keeps the Legacy RS steady and capable under any conditions on any surface.

Far Cry 4 Soundtrack collaboration with Cliff Martinez

0

Ubisoft has today announced that it partnered with Film Composer and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Cliff Martinez to compose the original game soundtrack for its upcoming open-world, first-person shooter Far Cry 4, the much anticipated sequel to the #1 rated shooter of 2012. Cliff has a background in music as a former member of the award-winning rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers and has composed scores for films including “Traffic,” “Drive” and “Spring Breakers.”

12inchJacket_offset

Working with Ubisoft Montreal’s Far Cry 4 Music Designer Jerome Angelot, Music Supervisor Simon Landry, and Audio Director Tony Gronick, Cliff created original music specifically for Far Cry 4’s gameplay and helped bring to life the gorgeous, yet ruthless environment and the unforgettable characters found in the game.

“Bringing Cliff on board was a no-brainer. Collaborating with him was a dream. He has the remarkable ability to portray compelling emotions and elevate the mundane into extraordinary with his musical talent,” said Tony Gronick, Audio Director for Far Cry 4, Ubisoft. “Cliff delivered everything I hoped for. I’m so proud of the music in Far Cry 4 and am thankful for the opportunity to work with him.”

“It was an honor to be asked to write the music for the Far Cry 4 game as my first full-length video game soundtrack,” said Cliff Martinez. “It was exciting for me to be asked to take my usual minimalistic cinematic approach to the immersive game world.  Any game where you can ride on a rampaging elephant is a project you can’t turn down!”

In Far Cry 4, players find themselves in Kyrat, a breathtaking, perilous and wild region of the Himalayas struggling under the regime of a despotic self-appointed king.  Using a vast array of weapons, vehicles and animals, players will write their own story across an exotic open-world landscape.

The Far Cry 4 Original Game Soundtrack digital edition will release worldwide on 4th November, the limited 2 CD edition will release on 2nd December in North America and on 9th December in Europe, and the limited 3LP edition will release in January 2015.

Far Cry 4 will be available 18th November for PlayStation 4 , PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows PC.

Final Thoughts

The use of both black and red colours really makes the SB Inferno striking.

The headset’s 40mm full spectrum Neodymium drivers deliver good quality audio, and with its plush earpads and the lightweight headband the Inferno is comfortable to wear for extended periods of time.

Attaching, and detaching the microphone is very easy, and the quality is good. The microphone is bendable so that it doesn’t get in your way but is there when you need it! You can also control whether the mic is on or off from the control on the cord which also includes a volume control.

Using the SB Inferno with something like a PS4 is as simple as plugging it into the controller.

The SB Inferno’s audio quality can be further enhanced when it is coupled with a dedicated Sound Blaster internal sound card featuring CrystalVoice technologies designed specifically to eliminate unwanted background noise, as well as enhance voice quality. For this review we didn’t have access to one so we can’t comment on how they sound together, but you would like to think Creative would know what they are doing.

If you are in the market for a low cost good quality wired headset then you should definitely take a look at the Creative SB Inferno.

The Creative SB Inferno Gaming Headset is available now for £39.99 and you can learn more from the Creative website.
