New Monster for Evolve called the Gorgon is out now

0

2K and Turtle Rock Studios have today announced that Gorgon, a cunning and ghastly Monster, is now available for Evolve ,the 4v1 shooter in which four Hunters cooperatively fight to take down a single-player controlled Monster. Gorgon is available individually or as a part of Hunting Season 2, which also includes Lennox (Assault class), Jack (Trapper class), and two additional Hunter characters. All Hunting Season 2 content will be made available before 31st March, 2016.

Gorgon is a sly and hideous killer that enjoys watching her prey struggle. Gorgon makes up for her small health and armour pool with ranged attacks that deal damage over time and can be especially effective when stacked onto a single opponent. Gorgon uses her Web Sling traversal method to quickly pull herself across the map and allows her to stick to walls to hide and ambush unsuspecting Hunters.

Gorgon’s abilities include:

    Acid Spit – coats a target in burning acid and can be sprayed onto the environment, making areas too dangerous for Hunters to cross;

Web Snare – slows a target’s movement and deals damage, making Hunters easy prey for additional attacks

      Spider Trap – can be deployed at range, snatching Hunters and slowly digesting them while carrying them away;

Mimic – is a glowing husk that Gorgon sheds and controls remotely that traverses, melee attacks and detonates manually like a remote controlled bomb.

In addition to Gorgon, two free character adaptations will join the Evolve lineup in the coming weeks. Similar to the previously released Meteor Goliath, these adaptations provide an alternate character variant that combines new looks, effects, audio and gameplay into unique new playable Hunters. Blitz Markov trades damage reliability for increased damage potential that grows over time. Rogue Val excels at keeping multiple teammates healed at short range and increases her damage output, at the cost of decreased healing range and item utility.

Review: Anno 2205

3

Anno has made yet another leap forward into the future with all the extra technology and science that comes with it. The corporations of Anno 2070 are long since redundant and although some remnants remain the factions are all but gone. Instead there are new global factions that represent mega corporations that have made it to the moon and created a settlement there in the hopes of solving the energy crisis. Oh yeah, Anno is going to the moon!

Clearly building on the moon is a fairly big change for Anno and the main structure of the gameplay has changed to accommodate it. Rather than moving a settlement to an island and building it up until there’s no space left you will now be in control of several different maps at once. Your first area is ‘Temperate’ and forms the core of your population mass and therefore your financial income. Your chief concerns are similar to Anno 2070 in that you will be balancing farms and various factories to give your civilians what they need.

The second area you get control of is in the ‘Arctic’ which provides a completely different set of challenges. Factories and mines will provide a certain area of heat and your colonists must be housed within to make use of the warmth they provide. There’s quite a different aesthetic once your settlement is built up as you create smaller pockets of civilization rather than sprawling, uniform cities. The Arctic is also where you will attract your scientists and produce valuable minerals and resources not available in Temperate climates. It’s actually quite freeing to build like this and finally have to get over building everything obsessively symmetrical.

The final frontier is the ‘Lunar’ environment which is only available after you have sufficient upgrades to your spaceport so that you can reach the moon. Yet another set of challenges await you on the moon as your buildings will need to be shielded from asteroids and other space debris that impact on the surface. There is a similar gameplay to the Arctic except you can directly control the areas that are shielded for you to build in. There are also different resource concerns once again and the balancing act is significantly different in each of the three areas.

One of Anno 2070’s main tasks was organizing shipping routes to ensure goods got from one island to another. This time around resources are shared on an area wide scale so having huge amounts of intricately planned shipping lanes isn’t necessary anymore. Instead each area will need resources from the other regions. So your transfer routes will be set up on a global scale without the need to build and manage ships. Instead there is just a financial cost to maintaining the route depending on where the goods are coming from, going too and how many you’re moving. It’s a lot less fiddly than it was back in 2070 and despite taking some of the management out of the game it’s a welcome change.

Anno2205_Port_Area_big

Balancing production is much easier now thanks to the altered UI and production values. When you check out your inventory now there isn’t the option to store huge amounts of resources but instead the net resource production is displayed as a simple integer – whether it’s plus, minus or zero. The production rate of factories and farms is also clearly  displayed so it’s quite simple to adjust a value and get production back up. You don’t have to guess or spend hours on the wiki anymore then wait until the production rate catches up, instead placing a building updates the net production instantly. It’s much more satisfying now that you are given the important values you need to create a balanced production chain. There’s also a lot less buildings that tediously require something like 70% of the previous building in the chain which often leads to surplus resources.

A lot of buildings still allow you to build extra satellite buildings but it’s no longer a requirement. It used to be that placing a building would require, for example, 4 extra buildings (such as fields or factory buildings) to get production to 100%. Now the single initial building will produce at 100% but you can add extra modules to boost production. You can also add small modules that give you the option to reduce the maintenance cost, power consumption or required manpower which can be extremely valuable especially when using extra production on a single building as the reductions are a percentage.

Anno2205_Arctic_Gas_Power_Plant_Modules_big

The UI and building tools are all clean and basically work perfectly. After 10’s of hours I can’t remember placing anything wrong even once due to the build tools. Dragging roads and placing objects is efficient and there is even an extremely useful new feature, move. No longer will you need to basically completely destroy your city when you develop enough, you can just easily move stuff around to fit extra buildings in. You can even use it to expand when you run out of space and move production to another island as I did. You don’t even have to set up endless shipping lanes when you do so. Or if you need to place a building because a population has upgraded and has different needs you can shuffle the buildings around easily. Plus upgrading residences is not automatic by default anymore either so no more wondering were all your resources have gone and cities upgrading houses in a different order than the one you wanted. There’s even a new tool for using the mouse when upgrading so you don’t need to click on each house and press ‘U’ individually – although you can if you want to.

Combat has been moved away from the city building experience and now takes the form of individual scenarios for you to play using a prebuilt fleet of ships. The objectives are simple and combat still only concerns naval units so the combat itself isn’t all that different. Not having to spend hugely rare resources on something you hardly ever use is a nice relief and you tend to risk the ships more knowing that you’ll start with them again in the next missions without totally crippling your economy. The missions are strangely similar to the economy balancing act as you collect powerful single use abilities and fuel used to repair your ships and decide when to use them tactically. Learning to use these abilities is absolutely the key to success in the combat zones and can’t be ignore unless you play below your level.

Anno2205_Moon_Maintenance_Station_big

The  only big problem with Anno 2205 are the technical hitches. Frame rates can drop unexpectedly and ruin everything and even normally it’s difficult to get a smooth visual. It’s such a good looking game which is the real shame because a few lost frames constantly niggling really destroys the experience. The three totally different regions to play in really vary the looks which helps keep things fresh rather than looking at the same map for the entire game but at times it’s challenging not to notice the lost frames.

The new multi region gameplay is also satisfyingly progressive and having to overcome three challenges at once offers some interesting layers to the gameplay. The same old time-destroying Anno gameplay is still very much present but now you have better tools to build with and balance production. Moving the combat away into separate missions is another great decision allowing Anno 2205 both better city building and combat at the same time. Aside from the technical difficulties, which I seriously hope can be resolved with an update, Anno 2205 is a brilliant move forward in every respect. I had high hopes for Anno 2205 and it delivers everything I expected and more across the board. Once again, Anno is by far the best city builder there is.

Review: Assassin’s Creed Syndicate

0

Finally the cockney accents can leave revolutionary France and return home to industrialised London. AC has made the long awaited jump to an industrial era and frankly one of the coolest and most atmospheric periods in history. Technology is moving forward along with attitudes and civilization closer to the present day Assassin’s Creed game that will likely never be made. But we can always hope.

During the first few hours Syndicate surprised me by fixing and refining almost all of AC’s usual faults and niggles. The free-run up/down system returns and is stronger than ever essentially requiring you to hold either up or down on your travels now. Movements are therefore more deliberate and a lot of those frustrating moments jumping up the same wall and sliding back down again are pleasingly absent.

The combat system has also recovered from the dismal display in Unity. A few basic changes make the most noticeable difference like the fact that you can once again avoid gunfire. As with previous titles when an enemy takes a shot a counter icon will appear above your head, rather than off screen or not at all. Counter responses actually work and enemies tend not to charge in from off screen giving you no option to evade or counter. Once again you actually have the ability to win fights based on more than how lucky you are, if the enemy decides to repeatedly shoot you and how much medicine you’re carrying. Admittedly most of the changes to combat are features from previous games but it’s far and away the best combat in AC for a long time, possibly ever.

The same goes for the free-running which is better than ever especially when considering the addition of a grappling hook. The grapple allows you to zip to the top of tall buildings very quickly or create a zip line between two points to move between. It’s an important game changer and the first we’ve seen since Ezio. Sure there have been cool new gadgets or weapons but the entire landscape and the way you can scale and move around the city is totally changed by this now vital piece of kit. So much so that it’s going to be difficult to live without it for future titles especially as buildings keep getting taller the closer to the present we get.

1

Health regeneration outside of battles is finally included which significantly reduces completely unnecessary trips to the doctor to buy medicine. A sneak mode is included which brings up a detection ring around your character showing vaguely where enemies are making stealth section much more interactive. And the Assassin’s have once again discovered the ancient art of whistling to lure enemies. I actually didn’t find myself creating piles of bodies luring guard after guard with incessant whistling but it does add another consideration when stealthing an area.

Upgrades are plentiful and meaningful too. There are even a few that we’ve never seen before and progressing through levels is rewarding. Syndicate offers two characters to play as and as such there are two upgrade trees. Well actually both characters use the same one and there are three unique abilities for both Evie and Jacob Frye. There is ultimately little point in there being two characters to play as and likelihood is you will have a favourite. I preferred Evie as she isn’t a complete jerk like Jacob. Her three unique abilities are stealth oriented too which are, for me at least, more useful generally. Playing as one character would have provided the same experience as would having to decide between abilities instead of having all but three for each character.

Of course with this being essentially ‘Gangs of England: The Game’ you will have a gang. Members can be recruited on the street to help you in fights but zipping across the roof tops isn’t something they can keep up with, and honestly you often won’t need them anyway. The upgrades for your gang however are well thought out and a few really change up the game so at least the gang mechanic offers more upgrades to earn.

Outside of gameplay the characters are pretty generic. The twins ambitiously move to London early in the game to regain control from the Templars. Jacob is supposedly a lovable rogue but yet again Ubisoft have missed the mark. He really is irritating and basically acts like a small time villain for the majority of the game. But at least he isn’t as forgettable as Syndicate’s main villain – who has a moustache. There’s no plot or character development worth anything in Syndicate at all. There are also only 3 or 4 present day cut scenes and most are pointless except the ending which finally shows some much needed present day Assassin action. Shortly before leaving you high and dry with a terrible and unfinished ending. Always dragging things out just to get another release next year got old a while ago but now it’s just totally transparent.

2

As has become almost expected of AC the map is incredible. London is every bit as faithfully recreated as France was for Unity. The Thames forms a bustling hive of industrial activity running through the heart of the city powered by coal. Smoking chimneys and iconic landmarks cover the skyline in a beautifully recreated Victorian London. Bright sunshine with rain is such an English ‘tradition’ and it’s great to see that glorious English weather makes an appearance to drive home the atmosphere. After all it wouldn’t be Victorian without a layer of incredibly thick fog between you and the horizon.

The myths and mysteries that surround Victorian London however and almost completely ignored. You meet a few of the iconic figures of the time but it feels like a lot of the era is completely looked over. This isn’t helped by some of the most forgettable mission design I’ve ever seen. There’s the usual huge amount of activities to do on the map but when it comes to main missions you get the feeling you may as well not have bothered. This time it isn’t tailing that will be constantly forced on you but riding in carriages and kidnapping people to bring them back alive. While neither is particular poor but they are totally over used in almost every mission.

Missions that include imposters dressed as guards give you a guilt free excuse to kill innocents on more than one occasion. And the section set in WW1 sees you openly killing British soldiers for no reason. More than a couple of times I had to stop and wonder if the Frye twins were the real villains in Syndicate.

3

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is mechanically a huge leap forward and was a pleasure to play in every way that Unity was a pain. The free-running is the most refined it’s ever been and the grappling hook really takes the chore out of taller buildings and those tedious gaps that are slightly too big to jump. The fighting looks a little jerky and there is regular clipping but to play it’s finally fun again. Counter prompts are responsive and multi kills are satisfyingly violent. Plus the map button no longer opens the sluggish database if you passed by a landmark in the last 20 minutes.

The only mechanical problem is the insistence on using the ‘circle’ button for everything. On one occasion I was picking up and dropping bodies all over the place. I was trying to hide a body in a carriage but drop body, pick up body, hide body, hijack carriage, get in carriage and counter were all on circle. Which one will it do next? Another bounty sees a kidnap target surrounded by boxes of explosives. Circle is used for both kidnapping targets and picking up explosives so this irritation is even used intentionally to create an objective. Thanks so much for that one.

But by far the biggest let down is the plot taking a smaller and smaller role with each new release. If you play AC just for the historical free roam gameplay then that won’t be a problem but I’d like just a little characterization and plot development. Does anybody actually know what’s going on in the present anymore? I’m not even sure Ubisoft do. It seems they don’t much care either. Besides there’s always next year to think about.
