HITMAN is now a fully episodic AAA game

0

Io-Interactive has released further details for HITMAN which launches on 11th March for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC.

A change to the release structure, sees HITMAN become a truly episodic AAA game experience, with a major live component. Where players will perform contract hits on powerful, high-profile targets in exotic locations around the world.

Hitman Beta

Starting with a Prologue Mission and a Paris location on March 11th, followed by the next location, set in Italy releasing in April and then Morocco releasing in May. From there HITMAN will deliver regular monthly content updates, including three additional locations; Thailand, the US and Japan until the season concludes in Japan later in 2016. With weekly live events and additional planned content in between the monthly updates.

We decided to take the full leap and publish HITMAN as a truly episodic game experience,” said Hannes Seifert, Head of Studio at Io-Interactive. “Part of that decision is for that little bit of extra time to ensure every location we release is at the quality level fitting for a HITMAN game. But the main driving reason is that this will allow us to create a living game that will expand and evolve over time and establish a foundation for the future – this is the first game in a storyline which will continue and expand with future Hitman games.”

A new Intro Pack now contains Prologue and Paris levels and will release at the new price of $15 (or local equivalent). Each subsequent location will be priced at $10 as an add-on item to the Intro Pack*. Alternatively, players can buy the Full Experience up front for $60. This includes all of this year’s content as it’s released, and guarantees them not to miss any live or bonus content.

The disc version of HITMAN will ship at the end of 2016.

PlayStation users will also gain access to The Sarajevo Six. 6 Bonus Contracts, one of which will be released with each location and sees Agent 47 travel the world in pursuit of six former members of a paramilitary unit called CICADA in this self-contained side-story exclusive for PlayStation 4 users.

For players wanting to get into the game early, the HITMAN beta starts on February 12th on PlayStation 4 and February 19th on PC. Players can guarantee access to the beta by pre-ordering the Full Experience or the new Intro Pack.

Bravely Second: End Layer out for 3DS on the 26th Feb

0

Epic RPG Bravely Second: End Layer comes to Nintendo 3DS across Europe on 26th February. Building on the critically acclaimed Bravely Default, the sequel offers both newcomers and returning fans a vast role-playing adventure, filled with deeply strategic combat, unforgettable characters and much more.

Bravely Second is the latest addition to the stellar line-up of varied RPGs on Nintendo 3DS family systems, joining titles like Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and recent release Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros.. It also kicks off a landmark year that will see Fire Emblem Fates, Hyrule Warriors: Legends, and both DRAGON QUEST VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past and DRAGON QUEST VIII: Journey of the Cursed King all reach Europe before the year is out.

745x200-n-listpage-bravely-second-end-layer-045313

The story begins when the evil Kaiser Oblivion abducts Agnès Oblige, the heroine of Bravely Default, and her bodyguard Yew Geneolgia pledges to rescue her from the kaiser’s Skyhold, an impregnable fortress floating high over Eternia. Along the way, Yew will need to team up with Magnolia Arch and other new faces, plus a few returning heroes like Edea Lee and Tiz Arrior, to survive foreboding dungeons and conquer fearsome enemies.

Bravely Default’s innovative Brave and Default tactical battle system returns with even deeper layers of strategy. As before, players must balance risk and reward in turn-based battles: characters can make multiple moves in one turn, but this leaves them unable to move in subsequent turns. One new feature in Bravely Second lets players put their skill and their nerve to the ultimate test: after winning a battle in a single turn, brave warriors can immediately start another, more difficult encounter for the chance to earn increasing rewards. Chaining these battles together is a swift way to level up characters and jobs, but defeat means losing everything earned during those battles, so discretion should always be the better part of valour.

To conquer these tougher battles and devastatingly powerful enemies, players will need to make good use of the 30 character classes, known as jobs, to equip their characters with the skills necessary to survive. As characters gain job experience by battling, they learn new skills and abilities, giving players totally new tactical possibilities. For example, the new Patissier enfeebles foes with delicious desserts, while the Catmancer uses a deep understanding of felines to increase the team’s abilities and find useful items.

Upon its launch on 26th February, the game will be available as a Deluxe Collector’s Edition including an Original Soundtrack CD, Agnès Mini Figurine and a Deluxe Artbook of around 250 pages. The game will also be available solus and as a downloadable version from Nintendo eShop. A pre-launch demo focusing on the Three Cavaliers – Yew Geneolgia, Janne Angard, and Nikolai Nikolanikov – will act as a prelude to the adventure, and even allow players to unlock rewards in the full version of the game, depending on their progress in the demo. The demo will be available in Nintendo eShop on February 11th.

Review: The Banner Saga Xbox One

I first played The Banner Saga back in 2014 on PC following its successful Kick-Starter. It’s blend of many game genre styles and beautiful visual art grabbed my attention. Now at the start of 2016 comes its release on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It had been a long while since I played it and am always intrigued by PC games coming to console, so it was time to put on some warm clothing, pour a good mug of ale, and return to the ways of the Viking:

The Banner Saga is not your typical RPG game. Instead it is really a blend of traditional RPG with a turn based tactical combat system with a powerful player choice altering story telling game and it is this unique blending of genres and playing styles that makes for an interesting combination. At times they can be outstanding but at others, a hindrance.

The Viking setting was chosen to avoid what was seen by the developers as an over use of standard fantasy characters of goblins and elves. Using Viking legend however really gives The Banner Saga a fantastical abundance of elements to draw from which is seen in the amazing musical score which brings a soul to the story and helps transport the player into the Viking culture. This is important as the game heavily relies on the player feeling totally immersed in the story and the world the game creates.

Where the music begins the immersion process it really is the visuals that bring the world to life. Using hand painted art gives the game a traditional animated film feel. The opening cut scene sets up the story and initial adventuring just so elegantly. Each location you travel to is illustrated so beautifully by this style that it almost makes up for the lack of being actually in the world as you really only enter the world as the characters during the combat. Outside of that the story is told via screens where conversations and dialogue between characters take place and story progression is told by on-screen text. One thing the player has to be prepared to get used to is a lot of reading.

Banner Saga X1 2

The turn based combat is really enjoyable. Those familiar with XCom will recognise the style immediately. You have to move the members of your party to engage or avoid the enemy. Each fighter has two attributes which the attack can focus on, either attacking the enemy’s armour or strength. Strength indicates how much damage you can inflict but also that character’s health. Armour can offer protection from future attacks and sustaining damage to strength lowers the attack power.

Successfully defeating enemies can earn you Renown which can be used to level up a characters attributes which will help in combat battles. These attributes are different depending on the class and race of the character. A clever twist has Renown also serve as the world’s only currency which can be used to purchase supplies that your travelling caravan of characters that grow as you progress will need to survive and to buy new equipment to boost skills of characters. This adds a rich level of micro management that stems from success in combat which makes each fight all the more vital as you are literally fighting to sustain food for your caravan.

The game has up to 25 usable characters through the story, with whichever character you control serving as the chief character that makes all the decision’s and choices. The choices you make do shape how the story plays out and can lead to what happens to the characters in your caravan. From choosing between locations and situations to go to and dialogue decisions, the game works hard to make the player feel at heart of the narrative and flow of the story. I began by trying to make choices based on where I thought the decision would take me that would lead to a positive result, a side effect from my love of TellTale games. But soon I started to just make choices based on instinct and just dealing with any consequences rather than trying to guess what the outcome maybe. There are times however where the linear nature of the game negates the freedom that player choice suggests. There were points where the game would offer the choice to go to either of two encounters to only have my choice overruled and took me to the encounter it needed me to go to. Some consequences are ultimately resolved off-screen where only text on-screen will inform you of it or often not at all. Such occurrences can break the atmosphere which was a shame.

Banner Saga X1 3

The Banner Saga has crossed over to console very well but the issues I felt it had back whilst playing in 2014 still exist. Having everything after the opening animated intro be onscreen text will be off-putting for some. The sheer number of selectable characters can be overwhelming at times where a smaller number would have allowed for a more intimate party use. The size of the caravan that you grow as you progress can feel rather empty as you will never really interact with them beyond providing supplies to keep them fed. Appearing as only numbers shown on the caravan travel screen, you can build a large caravan or maintain a small one.

The Banner Saga is a very different RPG experience than most console players will have experienced. For all its flaws there is no taking away how great the story is and how beautiful the world is drawn by its art style and music. Having the patience to work through the story telling and dialogue told by on-screen text is balanced by the strategic combat. It has a real old school feel to how it is all executed and there will be some that may find it too different but it will be a game experience to remember.
