Review: WRC 5

0

The racing genre is a bit of a no go recently especially for those who can’t enjoy Forza Motorsport. Drive Club and a couple of Need for Speed titles are really all you’ve got to go with. So I openly welcomed WRC 5 hoping it would fill the racing void in my life. I’ve always enjoyed rally games with the challenging tracks and the seemingly impossible speeds at which you tackle them. Time trials also reduce the need for great AI and leave you to hone your skills to perfection and push every limit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQcz084Lf3Y

But rally games often go in what I consider the wrong direction heading towards NFS style cornering and sliding more than providing a sophisticated handling model for you to perfect. WRC follows the trend to a degree and where it can keeps away from anything simulation. The handling model does a pretty good job of finding a balance between the two making sure racing is fun and that you can get started quickly.

I found myself quite comfortably winning for a good while as I learned the tracks and cars before the difficulty ramped up and offered me a challenge. As it should the greatest challenge comes from the tracks and your ability to navigate them without rolling off the side in a fiery ball of death. On top of that you can continue racing your own times and improving bit by bit until you achieve your goals. The perfectionist in me was definitely encouraged by WRC giving me huge satisfaction once I could complete a stage smoothly.

I was let down somewhat by the limitations of WRC and it’s strange refusal to include anything that even approaches simulation. There’s a nice time based repair segment between races that reminded me strongly of the great Colin McRae Rally 4. It adds a much needed segment of strategy between the excitement of racing. The distraction is only brief but meaningful, simple and well designed.

screenshot_wrc5_Exclusive-screenshot-4

Those seeking a deep career mode will be disappointed by WRC. I found that the ‘get in and play’ style imposed its limits far too much after a couple of hours of gameplay. There are no driver skills to upgrade, components to research or a team sponsor to please. WRC makes no attempt to sell itself as a simulator or racing manager but that shouldn’t mean that every single feature of a more serious racer has to be dropped.

However, both the tracks and the cars are faithful although even that also imposes its limits on WRC given the limits of the sport. There aren’t all that many cars to play around with from the world of rally and it would have been nice for them to have had more depth from an upgrading and research system. Something as simple as an arbitrary number assigned to each component that you could upgrade is better than nothing. No B class or vintage races are on offer and there aren’t even cars from recent history available.

It’s very difficult to get a sense of progression in WRC 5. Outside of the ability to get in and quickly enjoy some rally WRC has very little to offer. The tracks are there, the cars are there but there is little to no cohesive element to tie everything together. In this state WRC feels like an incomplete title that while providing exactly what it says it does takes no steps towards developing it into a fleshed out experience.

screenshot_wrc5_ford-m-sport_rally-guanajuato-mexico_011

The other gapingly obvious issue with WRC is the fidelity and graphical hitches. Considering the size of the development team WRC looks very nice but sadly that doesn’t say much. Without the big budget available to most racing dev teams environments can look somewhat low resolution and repetitive. I don’t get the sense that one forest is much different from another or that the dirt tracks are made of different stuff in different regions. WRC just can’t offer that level of detail. I was surprised at how many times I lost frames too given the low fidelity on powerful current gen hardware.

The biggest problem with WRC 5 is that it feels too much like the rally segment of a full racing simulator and not enough like a full game. With no meaningful career mode or upgrade system it’s difficult to keep interested in WRC. As a racer the mechanics are solid and strike a balance between simulation and fun – although for my preference edges a little too close to arcade. It’s a shame there isn’t more content because WRC could have been a really great racer in a time when there are very few. But it misses the chance and maintains the franchise as competent but not spectacular.

First Impressions: HITMAN Beta

0

The newest instalment in the HITMAN series has had a troubled start in the eyes of players. For the first time a decision was made to break the game up using the Episodic release model. It had a controversial delivery plan which publisher Square Enix scrapped and changed due to the reaction. Now it’s full speed ahead to its launch on March 11th and as a reward for pre-ordering, this past weekend the HITMAN Beta was held, exclusive to PlayStation 4 players, giving a first look at what we can expect from HITMAN in 2016. Here are my impressions of the Beta content:

The HITMAN Beta gave access to the main game’s ‘Prologue’ section set twenty years before Agent 47 worked for the ICA. It takes players through 47’s introduction to the ICA organisation and his first team up with the handler Diana Burnwood. Set in an ICA secret training facility, it contains two test missions where old assassinations are recreated with 47 challenged with completing them to prove his skills.

I really enjoyed HITMAN Absolution and found the gameplay in this beta flowed on from that title. For the first test mission, with the second being the final exam, the player is guided almost in a handheld fashion to completing the mission and teaching you the fundamental skills 47 will use in the field. I found it to be a good tutorial for new comers to the HITMAN series and a great refresher for more experienced player. Below is my first attempt at the mission

Even with the hand holding it was clear from the mission location that are multiple ways in which to complete each assassination. Using disguises will allow you to move in certain sections easier but it is not fool-proof. Each type of disguise, a guard uniform or in the case of this mission a mechanic, is like a character group. Each group will have certain NPC’s who will notice that you are not part of the group and will be suspicious of you if you get too close and walking into a section that group’s uniform is not permitted will see 47 being warned off or risk alerting guards. Strategic use of disguises is key and when used well can aid in escape.

Now my first attempt was messy, unrefined and pretty rubbish actually. Yes I killed the target and escape but it did not feel clean or very Agent 47ish. Once you complete it you are encouraged by Diane to replay it but to look for different methods of completing it. Like Absolution, the mission has a Challenge list in the menu showing objectives to complete the mission such as using certain ways to distract a guard or setting up a sequence of events such as disguising yourself as the guest the target is having a meeting with, have that meeting and use it as an opportunity to kill the target. Whilst some  will see this as a ‘kill by numbers’ cheat sheet, I used it to practice the skills and techniques needed to make a better and more Agent 47 assassination. Now comfortable with those skills it was time to move on to the Final Exam.

The Final exam is a more challenging affair but again it serves as a tutorial into how the game will play. As this mission opens, and how I completed the test in the above video, each mission will have ‘opportunities’ to create and initiate a sequence of events that will help take out the target. Some will be theatrical whilst others more subtle but they all feel the most HITMAN. These can be tracked on the map so you can pick one to follow, in this beta the triggers were all shown to be selected but by exploring the location you will discover possible chances by eavesdropping conversations. To complete each opportunity to must complete each of its setup such as getting the right disguise in order to get the right object to be placed in the right position and so forth. Each opportunity is different requiring certain objectives to be met. Now Diane will comment on each stage offering a little background on what to do, the player will still have to work out how to achieve certain tasks. They are not always clear and so chances can be missed if you fail to follow the objectives correctly.

HITMAN Beta 2-800x450

Overall I really enjoyed this Prologue section, which will also be included in the first available game content. Although it only had two missions, it served as a great way to learn or relearn the techniques needed going into the full missions the game will have. Each mission location did feel small and contained but as they were set in a training facility I am expecting much larger areas to work in the main game. The freedom to choose how to complete the assassination was fun and uncovering new ways and completing the challenge list showed the depth in each mission if you take your time to really study what the location offers.

Visually the game looks great although I did experience some lag and stuttering during cut scenes as the game loaded in the background but whilst in mission the gameplay was fluid and smooth. I found myself learning escape routes and planning where to take out NPCs in order to position disguises at key points to help that escape. The multiple ‘Opportunities’ are fun to explore by replaying the mission to try out different ones.

The satisfaction of a clean kill is why I have been a fan of the HITMAN series all these years and though I acknowledge that it has been made more player friendly it still has depth and rewarding gameplay. This beta confirmed for me that the new HITMAN game will still appeal to fans but a question mark still remains over the episodic nature of it. If enough content is given in each episode and their release is steady and on time then I feel it will work.

The first episode of HITMAN releases on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on March 11th 2016

Review: Unravel

Truly exceptional game experiences are few and far between these days. Experiences that from start to finish manage to entertain, surprise, resonate and move players. So when one such game comes along and ticks all those boxes it is something very special. Unravel on the surface is a clever puzzle platformer with a cute character. Underneath, it is all the above and more:

Unravel takes players on a journey along side of Yarny, a character made simply of yarn who will win your heart in the first ten minutes of playing. The game opens in a family home, where an elderly woman is sitting teary eyed at a table looking at photographs and lamenting over family memories. As she retires to bed carrying her basket of yarn, one small red ball of yarn drops from the basket. Out of her view, the character of Yarny appears and the story and player’s journey begins.

At its core, Unravel is a physics based puzzle platformer with levels featuring different environments and hazards that the player must overcome using the abilities of Yarny who uses his own body of yarn to create bridges, swing between points or to pull objects and activate switches. As Yarny uses more of himself in such ways, the yarn and essentially Yarny itself, can run out preventing the player from continuing. Extra yarn is placed through each level and Yarny can replenish in order to carry on.

Where the game stands out is how its core design blends with the story telling, visuals and musical score to create one of the finest game experiences I have enjoyed in recent years, one which I would happily put on par with ‘Journey’ and ‘Never Alone’. There is a photo album on the table that the elderly woman was sitting at. This album should be full of pictures and memories however every page is blurred and distorted. Yarny goes on a journey to retrieve those memories by travelling into the family photographs positioned around the house.

Unravel 3-800x450

The memory will form the theme and setting for the level. The first level, Thistle and Weeds, has Yarny moving through a garden in spring. The sound of moving through grass, insects and birds in the background as a soothing musical score accompanies you along the way. The player is taught how to use Yarny’s talents such as using right trigger to throw the Yarn Lasso which Yarny can use to swing  or attach to points to climb. Yarn bridges can be used to bridge gaps to travel over as well as to move objects to where they are needed. The bridges also act as trampolines to help Yarny reach higher areas. Yarny’s abilities remain the same all through the game with no upgrades or new skills learned. Instead the challenge for the player will come in how you learn to use those skills as the puzzles become more complex through each level.

Being made of yarn means our hero faces numerous dangers from natural elements such as fire and water but from animals and traps. The delicate small details in the animation makes any failure to keep Yarny safe will lead to many heart breaking moments. With no pun intended, at times it really pulls on your heart strings and I genuinely felt that I had let Yarny down. The animation of Yarny is just sublime and just brings the character to life in every visual way and some charming surprises. There is a child like wonder about everything Yarny encounters at first which is cute and sweet which helps the bonding with the player to the point that I cared about where Yarny was heading.

Visually Unravel is a beautiful visual game to play. Every level and its environment is a visual treat for the player, and I spent a good deal of time soaking each one in as I worked to solve each puzzle put in my way. You can feel the passion the developers had for the world of Unravel with subtle details in background activity to create that world for Yarny to explore. It really is just a stunning feast for the eyes that even on replaying certain levels I noticed aspects I failed to see the first time. How Yarny is animated also reflects the environment of the level and you can feel what emotions Yarny is feeling just by letting the controller go and watch.

Unravel 2-800x451

In a note from the developers right at the start of the game on your first time playing, they explain that the game is about reconnecting. This theme plays out strongly as through Yarny, the player recovers those memories the elderly woman holds most precious. The journey through them is a powerful one, and though no narration or dialogue is used, as Yarny I felt the emotions of why that memory would be held as meaningful by the elderly woman. That level of immersion came as a surprise to me, and it was a welcome one.

What the developer Coldwood has managed to achieve with Unravel is really remarkable and the rollercoaster of emotions I felt during my first playthrough left me in a very different state of being than when I first pressed start. Unravel is an accomplished and challanging puzzle platformer that has a unique gameplay style that is satisfying and rewarding. The main character of Yarny whilst small and cute in stature has a big heart and warm soul that grabs you and brings you along for a very intimate and personal experience.

For only £14.99 Unravel is just incredible value for money but as a gaming experience it offers tremendous story telling that many blockbuster releases fail to deliver. It may only be mid February but this is one title that for me has already set the benchmark for 2016 Game of the Year. Have played the game through twice at the time of penning this review and each time I reached the end of the story I was moved by every theme and message the developers put in the game.

I found myself taking that message to heart and that is why sharing in Yarny’s adventure is a must play experience.

Review – NCIS: New Orleans The First Season DVD

NCIS: New Orleans, a spin off series from NCIS, features Agent Dwayne Cassius “King” Pride (Scott Bakula) as the head of a dedicated team of Navy investigators in New Orleans, consisting of Special Agent Christopher Lasalle (Lucas Black), Special Agent Meredith Brody (Zoe McLellan), coroner Dr. Loretta Wade (CHH Pounder) and Forensic Scientist Sebastian Lund (Rob Kerkovich).

NCIS: New Orleans had it’s pilot as a two part episode of NCIS during it’s 11th season in a story called Crescent City. Thankfully that two part episode is included as part of the 6-disc set.

Surrounded by the city's soulful music and luscious food, Pride and his New Orleans NCIS team investigate a murder case with ties to the military. Meanwhile, Brody acclimates to life in the Big Easy with a little help from her coworkers, on the series premiere of NCIS: NEW ORLEANS, Tuesday, Sept. 23 (9:00-10:00, ET/PT), on the CBS Television Network. Scott Bakula plays Agent Dwayne “King” Pride, and fans of both Quantum Leap and Star Trek: Enterprise will be happy to see him back on their screens.

During some of the early episodes, characters from NCIS make the occasional appearance, sometimes it feels like the producers felt NCIS: New Orleans needed them, but after a few episodes this stops, so when a character from NCIS does show up its actually a welcome addition rather than feeling a little forced.

Fans of JAG, the show that NCIS originally span off from will recognise Zoe McLellan who in JAG played Petty Office Jennifer Coates in a lot of the episodes. She is playing a different character here but it does take a little getting used to if you watched a lot of JAG!

The 6-DVD set includes all 23 episodes of the first season, plus the two episodes of NCIS, plus a number of special features making the set one to own if you are a fan.

Here’s a short behind the scenes clip:

All in all NCIS: New Orleans had a promising first season, with the right balance of action and story, and I look forward to seeing what they do with season two. If you are a fan of NCIS, or you like procedural drama’s then definitely check out NCIS: New Orleans.

NCIS: New Orleans is available now on DVD from Universal Pictures (UK).
