Review: Sniper Elite 4

The Sniper Elite series has always been a special kind of shooter for players and fans. Over the years it has adapted well to keep up with other shooters but has resisted going to far from its core gameplay and World War II setting. Now on Valentines Day, the fourth installment will make the biggest changes yet as Sniper Elite continues to evolve. For me it is a series that has always done just enough to keep my interest though I have had some niggles about certain features which had stopped it becoming my go to shooter experience. Happy to say that Sniper Elite 4 has finally ticked all the right boxes and then some…

Sniper Elite 4 picks up the action right after events in the last game, with hero Sniper Karl Fairburne tasked with helping the Italian Resistance fight back against the Fascist forces. To do this Karl will be sent on missions with a main objective but will also be given side objectives by other characters along the way at the start of each mission adding even more to accomplish in each mission. By doing so each mission can take anywhere from 90 minutes to over two hours to complete, and I was captivated and loved every one of those minutes.

The first big change in Sniper Elite 4 is the size of the playing area, which is now three times larger than in previous games. Rebellion has moved to a true sandbox environment now with multiple routes and methods to reach and complete each objective in the missions. There is a real freedom of choice for the player in how they tackle both the assigned objectives and in how they complete them, but the focus on using all the skills of a Sniper has never felt more important and as such, each mission will push the player to stay in the shadows and use stealth tactics to order to keep Karl from being caught in a situation where he will have to shoot his way out, something that left me rather cold in the previous games.

To achieve this, the player will need to take their time and scout an area before moving forward. Now you would think the most important item in a Sniper’s arsenal would be his rifle, but for me and especially in this game, the most vital and used bit of kit for Karl is his trusty binoculars, and boy do they come in handy. By using the binoculars the player can get a long range look at the objectives and playing area but the most valuable use is in tagging enemies and tactical targets such as enemy vehicles, ammo caches and fuel barrels. By tagging an enemy you will learn their rank, what weapons they have and a nice little bio about that soldier just to give them a little back story. Enemies will be shown on the mini map but by tagging them you will also see their markers on the screen so you will always know their whereabouts and after being tagged, the direction they are facing will also be shown, adding a much needed method of planning an approach into that area.

The variation in environments has benefited so much from the move to a larger sandbox design. For one mission you could be sniping across long open countryside during the day or moving through an Italian coastal town before being challenged with tackling a harbour at night. Each mission will encourage the player to embrace the skills a sniper must use, moving stealthily and remaining unseen. The environments will provide different options for the player to choose and will reward patience and planning. Taking the time to use the binoculars to scan the area ahead to tag enemies and study their patrol paths is crucial to all the missions just as studying the map will be to plot a path to the many objectives that will need to be completed in order to finish the mission. Learning to use shadows and foliage to hide in will help the player remain unseen and each location will have a way of sneaking to it rather then an obvious direct approach. But Rebellion has not made it too easy for players as the AI of the enemy has also been reworked, making them far more alert and suspicious should the player make a mistake and be spotted either by being caught in the line of sight of an enemy or by making enough noise to raise an alert. Once alerted all soldiers in that area will become suspicious and will investigate any possible spotting or sound and conduct a search. It is a welcome challenge to have an enemy capable of punishing a player for a mistake and gives each mission objective a real tension to get things right.

This has been the most satisfying Sniper Elite title for me, giving me a real satisfaction when completing campaign missions. I was able to use tactics and strategy on each mission rather than simply going in guns blazing with little consequence. I relished the need to wait patiently to take the right shot with my sniper rifle, often taking minutes to track an enemy and wait for the sound of a plane or gun placement to fire in order to mask my shot and therefore remain undetected. Watching the enemy scatter after a successful shot was exhilarating, to see them scared and confused meant I had done my job correctly. Using distractions such as taking out an enemy vehicle or causing an explosion in order to guide the enemy to a specific area in order to get more kills or to move to a new position is just how I would imagine a real Sniper would choose to use their skills. My tactics would change depending on the objective and environment, relying on my suppressed Welrod pistol when the action needed an up close and personal approach. This game simply offers so much in every single mission that replaying each one to try different things is a natural thing for a player to want to do.

The infamous X-Ray killshot cam is back but thankfully has been refined so that it is not triggered by every shot taken, something that bugged me in previous games. Now each time it does activate to show the trajectory of the sniper round as it decimates an organ in the enemy’s body has a real impact instead of glorifying the kill. It has also been added to physical take-downs and kills involving shrapnel from explosions making it even more perfect for taking a cheeky video clip with the DVR. The XP earned from kills will help level up the player and the weapons they are using, with each earning a bonus feature the more you use the weapon to and how you use it to get kills will have players trying out different load-outs, all of which can be tailored to how the player prefers with new weapons becoming available to buy with money earned from completing missions.

The entire campaign can be played in co-op with a friend, or you can tackle survival modes fighting against waves of enemies. Multiplayer takes traditional game modes and gives them the Sniper Elite treatment with a free for all deathmatch, team deathmatch and control modes. Distance King Mode is a twist on the deathmatch mode type where it remains free for all but the length of shots is what counts with the longest shot taking the winners podium. The online adds a welcome element and compliments the solo campaign side to give the most complete Sniper Elite game yet in the series.

Sniper Elite 4 accomplishes so many things and it does them all brilliantly. The campaign missions have real depth and challenge to each one with the story told through dialogue from the main characters but more so from the characters and enemy conversations heard via the binoculars in the mission. The Italian setting provides a rich look at World War II in 1943, in contrast to the South African setting of the last game. By focusing on Italy the game is able to offer more than just shooting Nazis, it shows how the country was affected by the war, how crucial the resistance was to the allied forces but also takes a look at Fascism as a movement and in a world that is currently so divided in views and its treatment of others, to go back and see how little the world has changed since WWII is rather alarming.

This game is a vast improvement for the series, and each time I completed a mission I wanted to go back and tackle it again to improve my performance and to try and complete the additional challenges that each one has on top of the main and side objectives. Sniper Elite 4 offers the most satisfying experience in the series for me, it keeps the best elements but has made the best leaps in improvements to give old fans and new players something to appreciate and sink their teeth into.

I was pleasantly surprised by just how much I enjoyed this game, I hoped for great things but Rebellion has refreshed the core gameplay and enhanced them by adding new elements that offer an enticing and delicious challenge for players in each campaign mission. Definitely one game to tag with your binoculars and track all the way till it is in your hands.

Nintendo Switch owners get free preview of Splatoon 2 during testfire event

Anyone looking to pick up the brand new Nintendo Switch console will have a colourful treat to look forward to, thanks to a special Splatoon 2 preview coming up in March. Players will be able to download a demo version of Splatoon 2 ahead of its summer release that will allow them to battle against opponents around the world during six sessions spanning the three days of the Splatoon 2 Global Testfire event.

At the Tokaigi Game Party Japan 2017 event that took place in Tokyo over the weekend, Splatoon series producer Hisashi Nogami also confirmed new details on this summer’s splat-tastic sequel for Nintendo Switch. Private Battle Spectator View is a new functionality that will allow up to two people to participate in a Private Battle as cameramen to observe the 8-player battle from multiple angles .

Players equipped with their own recording tools will be able to broadcast videos online from a commentator’s perspective.
That functionality can also be used in conjunction with the newly announced LAN Play feature. Connecting up to 10 docked consoles via wired LAN will be well-suited for proper tournaments, while for more casual get-togethers up to 8 players can still enjoy a quick game via the previously revealed local wireless connection.
“Two years have passed since the original Splatoon and since then, the weapons, maps and characters in that world have evolved. Through the Splatoon 2 Global Testfire event this March, players will be able to get a taste of that. There will be more new features to Splatoon 2, so please look forward to more reveals in the future,” noted Nogami.
The Global Testfire event will give Nintendo Switch owners six chances to play with other players worldwide during the three-day event. It will offer content also featured at various Nintendo Switch hands-on events around the world. Players can test four different main weapons, including the new Splat Dualies, as well as remixed versions of the iconic Splat Roller and Splat Charger.
The timings of the event are as follows:
Friday, March 24th
• 20:00pm – 20:59pm CET
Saturday, March 25th
• 4:00am – 4:59am CET
• 12:00pm – 12:59pm CET
• 20:00pm – 20:59pm CET
Sunday, March 26th
• 5:00am – 5:59am CEST***
• 13:00pm – 13:59pm CEST***
Splatoon 2 will be compatible with Splatoon series amiibo and for the first time in the series with an upcoming Nintendo Switch app for smart devices that enhances online play.

This app will connect to the game and allow players to set play appointments with friends who have been added to their Nintendo Switch friend list or via their social media accounts. It also allows players to match up with those friends directly in the game or voice chat with them via their smart device.

For example, during a Private Battle, players can voice chat with all of their connected friends when they divide into teams, but once teams are set, voice chat is switched to communication only between teammates on the same team.

Review: ACWorldwide Darth Vader Bluetooth speaker

0
ACWorldwide is back with this time Darth Vader Bluetooth speaker (RRP £149.99 ACWorldwide/Amazon.co.uk), last year I review the Storm Trooper speaker, so there will be a Master Chief very soon.
Darth Vader Bluetooth Speaker from ACWorldwide
Now onto Darth Vader himself, sound from Darth Vader is delivered through a 2.1-channel design with two, 3W drivers behind the eyes and a downward-facing ported subwoofer on the bottom.
NFC pairing on the speaker
They also come with NFC (Near Field Communication) for instant pairing with compatible devices and double up as a hands-free speaker for taking phone calls.

To add a bit of fun and authenticity to the speakers, when a Bluetooth device is paired the characters will do the Darth Vader heavy breathing from the Star Wars movies.

The speaker comes in a fully branded collectors box. With each speaker comes supplied with a carry case, cleaning cloth, auxiliary cable and power adaptor (with a USB slot on the back of the speaker you can plugin a USB to charger your phone if you need to).

No matter what style of music I’d played through the speaker, the clarity was crystal clear and the sound remarkably warm to listen to, it’s a breath of fresh air.
The two big areas that really impressed me were the speaker was the Bluetooth range and the diffusion of sound from it. Bluetooth I had no problem walking round pretty much the entire house while paired and the connection didn’t cut out. During one session with the speaker, which was located in a middle room in the house, I walked to the end of my lengthy garden with my phone in my pocket and the music still carried on.

Ubisoft announces release date for Star Trek: Bridge Crew

1

Ubisoft announced that the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise from Star Trek: The Original Series will be playable in Star Trek: Bridge Crew, the new virtual reality game where players explore space as a member of Starfleet. Under license by CBS Consumer Products, Star Trek: Bridge Crew will be available on PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. In addition to the announcement of the original series bridge aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, the new launch date on all platforms will be 30th May.

Developed by Red Storm Entertainment, a Ubisoft Studio, Star Trek fans will be able to live out their Star Trek dreams as a member of the bridge crew aboard the famed U.S.S. Enterprise and the U.S.S. Aegis, a brand new ship created for Star Trek: Bridge Crew. Playable co-operatively with a crew of up to four, or solo playing as the Captain, players will be immersed into the Star Trek universe as they command a Starfleet vessel and complete missions that will determine the fate of their ship and crew.  The original U.S.S. Enterprise bridge will be playable in the Ongoing Voyages mode, which generates randomised missions for countless hours of solo and co-op adventure.

“We felt it was important to include a part of classic Star Trek with this game, especially during Star Trek’s 50th anniversary,” said David Votypka, Senior Creative Director at Red Storm Entertainment. “The original U.S.S. Enterprise is such an iconic part of the franchise – it’s the ship that started it all.  The adventures and relationships that took place on the ship are a special part of Star Trek history, so we were determined to give players the opportunity to create their own adventures and stories on this classic ship.  We’re very excited to see player reactions when they step onto the U.S.S. Enterprise original bridge for the first time, and experience Star Trek: Bridge Crew in a whole new way. We’re also appreciative of players’ patience as we finalise work on the game to bring the Star Trek experience we envisioned to life.”

Star Trek: Bridge Crew marks the most recent project in virtual reality for Ubisoft, which believes in the strong potential of VR to redefine social gaming with a unique sense of reality. Ubisoft recently released the games Werewolves Within and Eagle Flight, and announced a VR partnership with the film company SpectreVision.

Review: Resident Evil 7 Biohazard

Resident Evil created the survival horror genre, but in recent releases it had lost its way, moving towards more action based gameplay which was far removed from how the series began. CAPCOM has released multiple remastered versions of the earlier entries to the series which have brought the series back to the attention of this current generation of gamers, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard looks to bring back the good old days by again changing its gameplay style to reach a new audience, but has it managed to recapture what made the series so iconic to begin with?

Being honest, this was a far more conflicting gaming experience for me than I had expected. I loved the first Resident Evil games with their genuine levels of tension and pressures put on the player for inventory management, puzzle solving and real trepidation about what enemies could be just around the corner. But the series dropped off my radar but revisiting it in the recent remastered titles both reminded me why I first loved the series but also why I stopped playing them. The demo for Resident Evil 7 released last year showed that CAPCOM were willing to get the series back on track by changing the gameplay to a first person perspective but bringing back the multistep puzzle solving of the originals.

The story opens with the player taking the role of Ethan Winters who is searching for his wife Mia who has been missing for three years. After receiving a random and strange message from Mia asking Ethan to come rescue her from a seemingly abandoned creep house deep in Louisiana, Ethan pulls up and soon the player gets their first taste of the first person viewpoint as you slowly make your way up an increasingly creepy path through a wooded area that would not look out of place in a Tim Burton film.

It is the new first person POV that really makes the biggest impact of the changes in gameplay for Resident Evil 7. It naturally shrinks the area the player can see so where the previous camera over the shoulder third person view of previous games would allow you to see a great deal of the area the character was in, now you can only see what Ethan is looking directly act. This immediately adds a new layer of tension to the gameplay and is a genius change that is impactful right from the start. For the first time in the Resident Evil series the player is now fully immersed as the character, looking at the world from through their eyes, literally. Combined with an amazing use of audio to dial up the dread and tension right up to eleven from the off, every noise is a tease of something potentially very bad about to happen or just to help the game keep the player walking on egg shells as you slowly make your way through the home of the terrifying home of the Baker Family.

Ah the Baker family, what a lovely example of family love and togetherness they are. Well they were probably that at one point but in Resident Evil 7, this family is pretty much every single horror film and game villain all smooshed up together providing the initial enemies for Ethan. The Bakers consist of Poppa Baker Jack, Momma Baker Marguerite, their son Lucas and a mysterious old woman in a wheel chair, Granny Baker. At various points the player will encounter each member of the family as the story unfolds around you with the main git of the family being Poppa Baker Jack. They give the first half of the game its main villains and each one is just as unpleasant to encounter as the next but it is Jack that really steps forward to be the main pain in the butt for the player. In order to revitalize the gameplay, CAPCOM have clearly been influenced by more recent survival horror titles such as the infamous PT demo and Alien Isolation, and it is the latter that created the conflict I had with this game. The traditional use of multi element puzzles is back, with the player needing to explore the Baker family house in order to find items and keys to unlock more areas of the house. This is where it goes a tad Alien Isolation as Jack will do his up-most to stop you exploring by haunting the halls trying to hunt the player down. Like the Alien in Alien Isolation, Jack cannot be killed, he can be put down but it will take a lot of the crucial ammo you hold or a whole bunch of knife slashing in order to defeat Jack. But old Poppa Baker will not stay down for long, and no sooner will the player feel the satisfaction of surviving an encounter with Jack before he will return, and usually right where you need to go to continue exploring.

Failing to either hide successfully or surviving his attack will result in your death, meaning restarting from the last point at which you saved the game, using tape recorders in safe rooms which again adds a layer of tension as you need to save your progress just in case Poppa decides he is bored with playing cat and mouse with the player and just up and kills you. This is where my enjoyment came to an end with the game and it is not really the fault of the game itself but more due to how I prefer to play games. I do not do horror type games, not because I find them too scary but simply the opposite, jump scares and gameplay stile like Alien Isolation just do nothing for me. So when I needed to cross over to the other side of the house and Jack was there suddenly to block my path, having to back track or just hide in a corner for a few minutes was simply not enjoyable, slowing the pace down to a crawl. I soon found encounters with the Baker family members to be more funny than scary, in particular the encounters with Momma Baker Marguerite. Those who watched me stream this saw me simply laughing uncontrollably whenever I attempted to hide from Momma Baker only for her to spot me. It took a few seconds for her to attack once she had seen me, and those few seconds were some of the funniest moments in a game for me. Will Momma hug me or attack me was the only thing in my mind and not the HOLY S*&T! Moment of terror the game wanted me to have.

As a result the game lost what it needs to do to really immerse players in its world, fear. I simply was not afraid so the clever tricks it uses to give the atmosphere needed just failed to work on me, and is the main reason I never finished Alien Isolation. The tricks bored and aggravated me instead of the headset tearing off “NOPE NOPE NOPE” reaction some scenes were supposed to have on me. I found it laborious to constantly try and avoid Jack simply to find a key or item to carry on and if the game is not scaring the player then it loses the aspect it so crucially needs to give the experience it intends. So whilst it did not work on me, I was able to see how they worked as intended on a good friend of mine who quite frankly, was scared stiff the very moment they hit start and I relished in seeing them playing this game and having every single method of fear instilling tactic work beautifully, and I can say I enjoyed the game far more by watching someone else playing it who was impacted by the fear.

So although I did not enjoy playing the game, for once it is not the fault of the game. I can appreciate how the changes made in Resident Evil 7 have returned the game to the true game experience that helped it first create the Survival Horror genre in the first games of the series. The first person POV blended with the highly detailed and intricate audio can create the intended atmosphere of terror and dread that can be compelling for a player. The return to the traditional puzzle solving of earlier Resi games is welcomed, with carefully designed puzzles requiring real thought and effort to solve and a story that is elegantly told in both direct cut scenes but in the small details discovered whilst exploring.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard has succeeded in bringing the series back to its roots; it is a reboot that was much needed for a series that had fallen off the radar for many gamers and indeed fans of the series. Since its release it has topped the UK sales charts for two weeks in a row and is still one of the most streamed games on streaming sites like Twitch. Fans are enjoying the game and are hyped for the series and that is a positive thing. So in reviewing this game I can value the changes made and the conscious choices by CAPCOM to go back to where it began. It is different enough from recent Resi games to stand on its own but embodies all the aspects that made the series so popular. Whilst the gameplay has incorporated styles that no longer appeal to me, I enjoyed sharing the experience with players which they do work on, and that is the power of Resident Evil 7, it certainly ticks more boxes for more players than previous games in recent years managed to do.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard has reclaimed the Survival Horror genre crown, and it is scaring the bejesus out of people everywhere, and if that is what you enjoy in a game then this will give it to you many times over. Should all the elements come together, this game will terrify the player using everything it can from simple sounds that will freak a player out to visuals that will revolt and disgust at times but a satisfying multi-layered story that will make it all worthwhile if they work for the player.
