Today, some of the biggest names from the games industry are uniting behind SpecialEffect, the gamers’ charity, for their annual One Special Day flagship fundraising campaign.
Companies from all over the world, large and small, from the mobile, PC and console arenas – as well as retail and hardware – will donate revenue from in game purchases and sales, hold auctions and fundraising events and stage their own online sales of top titles.
Mobile developer Seriously have worked with SpecialEffect to promote One Special Day across the games industry and have been a major factor in its success. This year, the creators of the global hit Best Fiends mobile game have also utilised their partnership with English Premier League football club Norwich City to publicise the campaign. Seriously and their sponsorship partners Norwich City have arranged for match day advertising for the tie with Aston Villa on 5 October to be given to SpecialEffect, with fundraising and auctioning off signed shirts to boot!
Since its inception in 2016, One Special Day has raised almost one million pounds for SpecialEffect. It’s much needed income as the UK-based charity doesn’t charge for any of its services and relies entirely on voluntary income, much of which comes from the games industry and gaming communities.
One Special Day generates enormous positive interaction across social media and in the past has even had reality TV superstar Kim Kardashian tweeting her best wishes to over 57 million followers, as well as being mentioned in the UK Parliament! The huge surge of positivity generated by SpecialEffect and the games industry on One Special Day does an enormous amount to raise awareness of the charity’s work and the options available to people with disabilities who’d like to be able to play digital games.
Dr Mick Donegan, Founder and CEO of SpecialEffect, is delighted by the support for One Special Day from the games industry: ‘One Special Day is such an important fundraising event for SpecialEffect, particularly with the ever-increasing demand for our services. Call your friends! After downloading the free Version 1.1.0 update in the Super Mario Maker 2 game, you’ll now have the ability to play co-op and versus multiplayer with people on your Nintendo Switch friends list.
The update is available now, and lets you hop online in Multiplayer Versus or Multiplayer Co-op and play with friends, in addition to the previously available option to play with randomly selected players. While playing with friends, you will also be able to select the difficulty in Course World and choose which courses to play from your list of locally saved courses in Coursebot.
In addition to this multiplayer update, the free software update also adds a list of Official Makers in the Leaderboards section. Here, you’ll find new courses made by Official Makers, as well as ones created for collaborations or special events, like the courses played in last summer’s Super Mario Maker 2 Invitational 2019. Other features added after downloading the update include the ability to use both touch-screen and button controls when creating courses in Handheld mode, among other upgrades to make for an even more seamless gaming experience.
In Super Mario Maker 2, you can play, create and share the side-scrolling Super Mario course of your dreams. Dive into the new single-player story mode to gain inspiration for creating your own special courses, alone or together with a friend. Microsoft held a LIVE ‘Microsoft Surface’ event yesterday evening and unveiled an impressive range of new Surface devices as Microsoft launched a new suite of Microsoft Surface devices which was kicked by the Surface Laptop 3 and Surface Pro 7.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 3
The Surface Laptop 3 comes in two screen sizes with 13 and 15 inch screens. The 13-inch Surface Laptop 3 uses the latest 10th-generation quad-core processors from Intelo where as a surprise comes with the 15-inch version as it will come with a custom AMD Ryzen 7 processor which unexpectedly has Microsoft calling it their “Ryzen 7 Surface Edition”. Both will come with the new USB-C port for the first time as well as a larger track-pad with one of the slimmest builds for a Surface laptop allowing for an impressive 11.5 hour battery life and a removable top screen to allow for fast and effective servicing when required.
The Surface Pro 7 was also unveiled and it brings a good few refinements to previous models as the new Surface Pro 7 improves its laptop-to-tablet versatility by using a laptop-class Intel Core processor and improved battery life. Not much was actually revealed beyond the basic improvements but we do know that it will also come with both USB-C and USB-A ports whilst the improved Surface Pen will allow users to make in-line edits in Microsoft Word with improved voice commands thanks to Studio mics for the Surface Pro 7.
Microsoft revealed the brand new Surface Pro X which has a rather sleek design and only measuring in at 5.33mm making this the thinnest in the range at with ultimate mobility. The Surface Pro X also comes The Slim Pen which stores securely and recharges in the keyboard, so it’s always at your fingertips. The Surface Pro X will be available from November 19th.
Microsoft was also looking into the future by revealing the new Surface Neo which will not release until holiday 2020. Taking foldable tech to the next level, the Surface Neo comes with two 9” screens, a revolutionary 360° hinge, touch, pen and keyboard. The Neo screens are just 5.6mm thin on both sides and amazingly only weighing just 655 grams. The potential for this device for users who are always on the move is huge so this is a device to definitely keep your eye on over the next year!

Microsoft also used the event to unveil its very own Surface earbuds to compliment the new range of Surface devices. Fully wireless, the Surface Earbuds will have full integration with Surface devices and Microsoft Office 365 and Windows 10 with a ‘single click’ pairing with devices. The earbuds have what Microsoft are calling “Omnisonic Sound” and will come with their own charging case. Surface Earbuds will also work with Android devices with the ability to open music based apps so for those looking for an earbud solution and do not use Surface devices, the Surface Earbuds may still be an attractive option and will be available this holiday season.

Surface Duo is a new dual-screen device that fits in your pocket.
