Review: Waking

t’s so rare to see a game that truly feels like it’s attempting to do something unique these days. The cost of developing a game is high and indie developers can find it difficult to make their games stand out. The concept behind Waking is one that isn’t often touched upon in the real of games, but is it enough to make it worth playing?

Bethesda Acquired by Xbox in Huge Deal!

0

Well going by the immediate reaction to this tweet from the gaming industry including myself, no one saw this coming!

A statement from Phil Spencer followed this tweet on Xbox Wire, the official News Site for all things Xbox:

Today is a special day, as we welcome some of the most accomplished studios in the games industry to Xbox. We are thrilled to announce Microsoft has entered into an agreement to acquire ZeniMax Media, parent company of Bethesda Softworks.

As one of the largest, most critically acclaimed, privately held game developers and publishers in the world, Bethesda is an incredibly talented group of 2,300 people worldwide who make up some of the most accomplished creative studios in our industry across Bethesda Softworks, Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, ZeniMax Online Studios, Arkane, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog, and Roundhouse Studios. These are the teams responsible for franchises like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Wolfenstein, DOOM, Dishonored, Prey, Quake, Starfield and many more.

Just as they took the bold first steps to bring The Elder Scrolls franchise to the original Xbox, Bethesda were early supporters of Xbox Game Pass, bringing their games to new audiences across devices and have been actively investing in new gaming technology like cloud streaming of games. We will be adding Bethesda’s iconic franchises to Xbox Game Pass for console and PC. One of the things that has me most excited is seeing the roadmap with Bethesda’s future games, some announced and many unannounced, to Xbox console and PC including Starfield, the highly anticipated, new space epic currently in development by Bethesda Game Studios.

My Thoughts…..

Dear god this is huge, and I mean….HUGE! All the Bethesda franchises will be coming to Xbox Game Pass now Bethesda and their studios are all Xbox Studios now and the very fact that future titles such as Starfield as well as all the iconic franchises coming to both Xbox console and PC, with the next Generation of consoles coming in just two months is incredible.

Last month it was rumoured that WB Interactive was up for sale and Microsoft was interested but to see that now Bethesda is now an Xbox Studio is incalculable to the impact this will have going forward.

Xbox are on a roll….the afternoon before Pre-orders for Xbox Series X and S go live and Xbox buys Bethesda. The absolute “minerals” on Xbox right now!

Final Fantay XVI Revealed for PS5, Set for 2021 Release

0

During the recente PlayStation 5 Showcase event, SQUARE ENIX revealed that acclaimed creators Naoki Yoshida (FINAL FANTASY XIVDRAGON QUEST X) and Hiroshi Takai (FINAL FANTASY XIVTHE LAST REMNANT) are collaborating on an all-new standalone mainline FINAL FANTASY game, titled FINAL FANTASY XVI, for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) system.

Comment from Producer Naoki Yoshida : “FINAL FANTASY XVI producer (that’s right, just producer) Naoki Yoshida here. How did you enjoy the trailer? The exclusive footage, comprised of both battles and cutscenes running in real-time, represents but a fraction of what our team has accomplished since the start of development on this, an all-new FINAL FANTASY game. In that span, the team’s size has grown from a handful of core members to a full-fledged unit that continues to polish and build upon what they have created so far, all to provide players an experience unmatched in terms of story and gameplay.

Our next big information reveal is scheduled for 2021, so in the meantime, I expect everyone to have fun speculating, as we have a lot in store—not only for FINAL FANTASY XVI, but for FINAL FANTASY XIV, too. Needless to say, I’ll be working hard on both!”

Comment from Director Hiroshi Takai added: “When FINAL FANTASY I was released, I was just another player─a young student with big dreams. By the time FINAL FANTASY V was in the works, I had earned myself a seat at the developers’ table… albeit at the very end. From there, I moved “online” leaving my mark on both FINAL FANTASY XI and XIV.

And now…XVI.

From the establishment of an all new development environment, to learning the ins-and-outs of the PS5, the team and I have taken on countless challenges during our journey to bring you the sixteenth chapter in the storied FINAL FANTASY franchise. And though we’re pouring our hearts and souls into this project each and every day, it may still be some time before we can get it into your hands. However, I promise it will be worth the wait!

FINAL FANTASY XVI is a single player action-RPG being developed for the PS5.

Fortnite: Unreal Engine 4 Gameplay on PS5

PlayStation Plus Collection:

PlayStation 5 – UK Pricing and Release Date

God of War: Ragnarok – Teaser Trailer

and that is your show…..

……My Final Thoughts

So let me start with that price reveal, which is not surprising seeing how going more than the Series X is an instant self injury for the PS5. The All Digital version, which unlike the Series S is not a less powerful PS5 but simply one without an Optical Drive coming in at £359.99 puts it at current PS4 Pro pricing.

What is a kicker though, is the release date of November 19th for PAL regions whilst NTSC regions will get the launch on November 12th a full week before and at time of writing these thoughts, no Pre-Order information for the UK is officially available whilst for the US Pre-Orders will go live tomorrow at certain retailers. Xbox UK for example, had release date, pricing and Pre-order information at the time the announcement was made and so far now 40 mins after the event ended there is still nothing from PlayStation UK. PlayStation Plus Collection, if a feature of current PS Plus is a nice tiny clone of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, will bring a lot of iconic PS4 generation games on launch day day for owners of PS5, no doubt a way to entice those who may be coming to PlayStation for the first time a chance to see what they have missed.

But the games….well Spider Man: Miles Morales looking incredible from the preview scene they showed and instantly very different gameplay style for Miles than Peter Parker in Spider Man PS4, it looked incredible. Seeing Final Fantasy XVI was huge, I did not believe the rumours but it is there, though running on a PC Emulating a PS5 but its there. Demon Souls looks to be coming to Xbox Series X and PC as well as PS5 but it looked incredible with the new lighting effects so bravo to the brilliant BluePoint Games as always.

So the event was timed to leave the pricing and release date information for the big finish….well….that and confirming God of War: Ragnarok for 2021 on PS5 but it was well paced event in the end. The messy split in which regions get a PS5 launch has left a lot of people confused compared to the clear and concise messaging from Xbox in the US and UK especially. But its done. We know how much and when the PS5 will launch.

Now we can all focus on the fun excitement of the Next Generation launch in two months time!

*Update: 23:12pm – Over an hour after the event ended and amidst lots of confusion around Pre-Orders in the UK, PlayStation UK Tweeted this:

Review: The Outer Worlds – Peril on Gorgon

The Outer Worlds quickly became my GOTY by the end of October 2019. During my review playthrough, I managed to do just about everything there was to do and after 40 hours or so I completed the game with what I thought was the best ending possible and I was left satisfied but hopeful for more. Just over a month away from its one-year anniversary and we final have the first of two promised DLC story content for the game and I was extremely eager to jump back on board the Unreliable and reunite with my crew, and ADA the ships AI. But having completed the story, which if you have completed the game (no story spoilers) but the story does have an ending which completes the game so completely that you do not return to the game after the credits. So how would this DLC fit in to the game, and what is the Peril on Gorgon?

Triggering this new DLC does require players to be quite a way into the game itself as you will need to have fully completed the Free Radio Monarch questline which puts your character around the level 20 mark. If like me, you have completed the main story campaign, you will be required to load an earlier save which hopefully you still have. Fortunately I still had my “Beyond this point” forced save from just before you go on the very final campaign mission to use but this meant having a character without armour and weapons I had used for the final mission but one quick jump to another planet and the DLC is triggered when ADA gets a mysterious message with the Captain of the Unreliable name on it.

A strange package is then delivered to the cargo hold of the Unreliable with a message and severed hand, from a former friend of the Unreliable original Captain Hawthorne. The message has a lucrative job offer but the severed had suggest it will be a risky one. But off to Gorgon we go to see what rewards this sudden job will offer and how much money it can make us! Now I must admit, I was expecting more of a full expansion than what ‘Peril on Gorgon’ ultimately really offers. This DLC perfectly slides into the main campaign and feels more like a side questline than something you feel is DLC unless you have only recently purchased The Outer Worlds or discovered it via Xbox Game Pass. I put this down to the fact that the ending to the game fully wraps up the story so any new DLC and storylines will have to be positioned before the final mission of the game which is always going to fee strange if you are returning to the game after finishing it.

That does not mean that Peril on Gorgon is not fun to play because it very much is, in fact overall this new content honestly is a nice snapshot of everything that I love about The Outer Worlds. The writing and dialogue with the new characters is superb, the new action in the areas you explore is still fun and player choice plays a factor in how the story unfolds. Having not played the game for around 10 months, I did have to relearn how the systems work especially having had to start from a far earlier place in the game with a save very different from the moment I completed it originally. But it did fall flat in some areas just because I was hoping and expecting something bigger and there are sections that take you back to previous places for a short hop to do an objective then returning to Gorgon.

Peril on Gorgon can be finished in 6-8 hours so its not that long really to do everything but this is where the player choice that The Outer Worlds does so well comes into play as you are given choices which impact how the story will unfold. It is a fun murder mystery and you delve into the secret operation by Spacer’s Choice, as they tried to create a new drug called Adrena-Time and the impact it had on all of Halcyon colony. I loved all the lore that is buried on computer terminal logs and messages as you investigate so I fully recommend reading everything you can to really get the full picture of what happened on Gorgon. It is also very well written that if you were playing The Outer Worlds for the very first time, this DLC story slots very nicely and smoothly into the main campaign story without feeling tagged on, the new characters are fun to talk to as you uncover their motives and histories. The narrative pacing does sadly mean that about half way through, if you have been paying attention, that you can pretty quickly work out the surprise that the ending wants to keep as a big reveal but the payoff fails to really deliver that.

Peril on Gorgon is a great way to bring players back to The Outer Worlds if they have finished it and not gone back for some time and if you are new to the game, it offers even more fun stuff to enjoy as well as some new weapons and armour which raises the character level cap from 30 to 33, those three extra levels are easily earned just from this DLC. I was left wanted to replay the game itself after completing this DLC but the sensation that I wanted this DLC to be bigger than a short 8 hour run time lingered even longer so I am hoping that the second expansion ‘Murder on Eridanos’ can deliver that for me and fans.

But this DLC has all the elements that makes The Outer Worlds so fun to play and serves as a good reason to return to it if you had put it down and enhances it for those playing it for the first time. Though it doesn’t hit that must play level, it is certainly worth picking up if you have enjoyed the main game and have an itch to return.

Peril on Gorgon is satisfying though short and to capitalise on this, I hope the second DLC is released pretty soon into 2021 and not a long wait for it.
