Microsoft has released some additional details on other Windows Live Essentials 2012 applications.  Read on for details.

Windows Logo

Earlier this evening, I told you about the Photo Gallery and Movie Maker applications that were updated as part of Windows Live Essentials 2012.  Microsoft also posted up about a few other applications, and there is a big caveat if you are using Live Mesh: installing Live Essentials 2012 will replace Live Mesh with SkyDrive.  Avoid this upgrade if you want to continue to use Live Mesh.  Here is what Microsoft posted:

What is included in Windows Essentials 2012?

Windows Essentials 2012 includes our new SkyDrive for Windows app as well as Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Family Safety*, Windows Live Writer, Windows Live Messenger, Outlook Connector Pack and Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Movie Maker.

I use Windows Live Mesh. What happens if I install the new Movie Maker or Photo Gallery as part of Windows Essentials 2012?

If you have Windows Live Mesh installed, it will automatically be removed if you install the new Movie Maker or Photo Gallery (available as part of Windows Essentials 2012).

Microsoft SkyDrive will be installed in place of Windows Live Mesh. To sync folders from the cloud to all of your PCs, you will need to install SkyDrive on all of your PCs or Macs.

What is the difference between Windows Live Mesh and SkyDrive?

Please read this article for more information.

Can I keep using Windows Live Mesh?

Yes. If you do not install Windows Essentials 2012 on any of your PCs, Windows Live Mesh will keep working just like before.

If you have uninstalled Windows Live Mesh, you can still reinstall it. It’s available as part of Windows Live Essentials 2011.

Please note that you cannot install and run both Windows Essentials 2012 (with the new Movie Maker or Photo Gallery) and Windows Live Mesh on the same PC.

Big hat tip to Jim Collison (@jcollison on Twitter) for pointing this issue out to me.  Jim, I owe you a beer!

Seagate Completes Lacie Acquisition

Seagate announced the completion of the Lacie acquisition.  Read on for details.

seagate_2c_pos-wR

We told you about Seagate’s pending purchase of Lacie here.  On Friday, Seagate announced the completion of the acquisition of a controlling interest in Lacie.  Here is what they announced on Friday:

CUPERTINO, CA and PARIS, FRANCE – Following their press releases issued on May 23, 2012 and June 14, 2012, Seagate Technology plc (NASDAQ: STX) and LaCie S.A. (Euronext: LAC) announced today the completion of the purchase by Seagate of all of the shares of Philippe Spruch and his affiliate, representing 64.5% of the outstanding shares of LaCie for a provisional price of €4.05 per share. The price payable to Philippe Spruch and his affiliate may be increased by 3%, to €4.17 per share, in the event that within six months following today’s date, Seagate holds at least 95% of the share capital and voting rights of LaCie.

The completion of the transaction follows the required clearances from the French Ministry of Finance and the US and German Antitrust Authorities.

As a result of the completion of the transaction, Seagate intends to file in the coming weeks with the French Autorité des marches financiers an all-cash simplified tender offer on the remaining LaCie shares.

As previously announced, Ricol Lasteyrie & Associés has been appointed as independent expert by the Board of Directors of LaCie on May 23, 2012.

Following discussions with the Board of Directors of LaCie, in particular with the independent members, Seagate has increased the proposed offer price at which it will file its tender offer to €4.50 per LaCie share (without an additional 3% price supplement in the event that a squeeze-out procedure is implemented). Seagate may carry out a squeeze-out procedure at the same price of €4.50 per LaCie share if it were to hold at least 95% of the shares and voting rights of LaCie.

The Board of Directors welcomes the revised offer price and intends to support the revised offer as long as the final report of the independent expert affirms the valuation.

Seagate will continue to purchase the remaining shares with an all-cash offer to take out the remaining shareholders.  Seagate’s rationale for the acquisition was offered up in our first article on this transaction:

“Seagate has a strong commitment to the growing consumer storage market and bringing the most dynamic products to market. LaCie has built an exceptional consumer brand by delivering exciting and innovative high-end products for many years. This transaction would bring a highly complementary set of capabilities to Seagate, significantly expand our consumer product offerings, add a premium-branded direct-attached storage line, strengthen our network-attached storage business line and enhance our capabilities in software development,” said Steve Luczo, Seagate chairman, president and CEO. “We are also excited that Philippe, who is a true visionary and leader in the consumer storage business, would join Seagate to run our consumer storage products organization.”

“With the proliferation of devices and content being shared and stored today, consumer demand for high-quality branded storage solutions continues to grow,” said Philippe Spruch, LaCie’s chairman and CEO. “We are excited about the potential for this combination to benefit customers and employees by creating significant scale and opening up new markets. We look forward to making the resources of a much larger company available to our customers around the world.”

The fit seems sensible here; with Lacie’s strength in the consumer space and the additions to the premium NAS line, Seagate seems to be strengthening their position in the consolidating storage market.

Seagate shares closed at $32.59, up $0.69.

Microsoft Releases Updated Windows Live Applications

1

Microsoft updated their Windows Live Essentials applications today, including an update to Movie Maker, Photo Gallery and Windows Live Writer.  Read on for details.

MSLogo

Microsoft released Windows Live Essentials 2012 today, updating its suite of Windows add-on applications.  Here is what they announced:

Today we’re happy to announce new versions of Movie Maker and Photo Gallery for Windows 7 and Windows 8. We’ve added a few new capabilities while also taking advantage of some advances in Windows 8. Movie Maker and Photo Gallery are two essential Windows applications hundreds of millions of people have come to rely on for making the most of your photos and videos. And with this release, we’ve given you a few more reasons to enjoy them even more.

Movie Maker

Windows Movie Maker is a great way to turn your ordinary photos and videos into a captivating story. Whether you’re making a short clip to quickly share or taking your time to make the most of that big event, Movie Maker showcases your skills as a budding film-maker. With major advancements in hardware accelerated graphics in Windows 8, Movie Maker has evolved to include these state of the art enhancements.

Video Stabilization: Sometimes the video we take is just little too shaky; especially as we take more and more videos using our phones and smaller video cameras. Movie Maker has taken advantage of new technology in Windows 8 to smooth out your wobbly videos. Just select the shaky video and choose from a variety Video stabilization options and Movie Maker will smooth it out.

Music: The one thing that can really make a difference in a movie is the soundtrack. But it can be hard to find not only the right piece of music but a version with the appropriate rights. And even if you choose a song from your own collection, it runs the risk of being stripped out once it’s published to YouTube for not having the appropriate rights. So we decided to work with AudioMicro, Free Music Archive and the Vimeo Music Store to make it easy to find music that is not only fitting for video, but also has the proper rights. Now when you go to add music to your movie in Movie Maker, you have the option of getting music from your PC or from three varied music services.

So, you have the music but what about a way to control how well it plays with your videos. We’ve added waveform visualizations to both the music track and your videos so you can quickly see where you need to cut or trim your video to match your music.

Text Effects: Including text in movies continues to be a popular way to add depth or highlights but sometimes the font can get lost making it hard to read. One way to enhance the text is to place an outline around your text. Now when you add text in Movie Maker, you can also add an outline that makes the text stand out from the background.

H.264 by default: One of the most popular video formats out there today is h.264 which is rapidly becoming the default format for cameras and video sharing. Now Movie Maker saves to this format by default making it easier to publish your video to popular sharing websites, managing your videos and your files between services and devices.

Photo Gallery

In Windows 8, Windows Photo Gallery is the number one way to organize, fix, find and share your photos and videos. And with advanced features like Photo Fuse and Panorama, Photo Gallery continues to bring creative enhancement to your memories.

Auto Collage: Trying to create a collage of photos on your own is hard and usually requires expensive and complex software. With Auto Collage in Photo Gallery you just select seven or more photos and we’ll arrange them in a collage for you. Making a new photo our of existing photos has never been easier. Whether you want to make a special print of a collection of photos or you want a nice start or ending to a movie highlight with some of your favorite scenes.

Vimeo: We’re excited to announce Vimeo as our new publish partner! Now you can share your videos straight to Vimeo from both Photo Gallery and Movie Maker. Once you have your project saved and are ready to share it with the world, just click on the Vimeo button in the share gallery, choose from a variety of options that Vimeo provides and you’re done. Now your movies can become a part of an ever growing community of film makers who call Vimeo their home.

They did not mention Windows Live Writer as being new, but it is included in the download and works well (I did this post in WLW12).  Unfortunately, WLW12 is not an RT application, so no WLW for you unless you go Surface Pro!  Note that this update is for machines running Windows 7 or Windows 8.

If you are running Windows Live Essentials 2011, go ahead and download the update here.

Plextor announce plans to launch M5 Pro Series SSD

Plextor has released details of the forthcoming M5 Pro Series, a new performance line of SSDs due to launch this September across UK and Europe.

M5Pro_Back%20097_HR

The M5 Pro has been engineered with prosumers, businesses, and SMEs in mind. As the first Plextor SSD to incorporate the latest 3rd generation multi-core Marvell 88SS9187 controller, it will handle extremely high loads making it suitable for use in a heavy workstation, server role, or Raid 0 configuration environment.

In line with user needs, the M5 Pro will feature a unique data protection technology within the firmware, as well as the renowned True Speed Technology to prevent the drastic performance drop seen in some SSDs after intense or long-term usage. This combination of firmware, technology and reliability means the M5 Pro will set new performance records, featuring a sustained random read / write speed up to 94,000 / 86,000 IOPS as well as continuous read/write speeds up to 540/450 MB/s.

Expected to retail in capacities of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB, the M5 Pro Series is an extension of the recently announced M5 Series range, and will deliver truly high-performance professional grade SSDs to the market.

Each M5 Pro SSD will be backed by an industry leading five-year warranty alongside Plextor’s extensive international support infrastructure.

The M5 Pro Series is expected to be available in UK and Europe in September 2012.  Details on pricing and specifications are to be confirmed.

Microsoft talk about Growing Beyond 25 Users with Windows Server 2012 Essentials

Microsoft have posted a very interesting article on their blog about growing beyond 25 users with Windows Server 2012 Essentials – and this could be a very big deal for small businesses.

imagesCAKD8XV6

This was posted today on the Windows Server Essentials and Small Business Server Blog:

Hi, I’m Cristian Molina, Lead Program Manager on the Windows Server Essentials team, and today I want to share with you more information around our growth story for moving past 25 users in Windows Server 2012 Essentials (Essentials).

One of the major pieces of feedback about the previous version, Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials, was that after a customer had grown beyond the 25-user limit, they had to migrate to Windows Server Standard. After the migration, key Windows SBS-specific features that they had come to depend on (such as client backup, Remote Web Access, and the Dashboard) were no longer available. We wanted to address this issue in Windows Server 2012 Essentials, so now we enable customers to do an in-place license transition to Windows Server 2012 Standard.

The process for performing the transition is documented on the TechNet page, Transition from Windows Server 2012 Essentials to Windows Server 2012 Standard. Customers need to purchase a copy of Windows Server 2012 Standard, and because Essentials does not have any client access licenses (CALs), they will also need to purchase the appropriate number of Windows Server 2012 CALs for their environment (these can be either Per User or Per Device CALs, but Per User CALs are more common). For example, if an organization with 26 users is performing the transition, they will need 26 Windows Server 2012 Per User CALs to be license-compliant.

After you have transitioned to Windows Server 2012 Standard, the Windows Server 2012 Essentials limits are removed, including restrictions on user accounts, number of devices, the Hyper-V role, and Active Directory. Instead, you will be subject to the limits and restrictions of Windows Server 2012 Standard. The Essentials features will still be there with the exception of the media features, which no longer work due to technical limitations. The removal of media functionality means that media features in other parts of the Essentials experience will be removed (for example, the ability to access media via Remote Web Access, media settings in the Dashboard).

After an in-place license transition to Windows Server 2012 Standard, the Windows Server 2012 Essentials features can support up to 75 user accounts and 75 devices. Note that there are no restrictions placed on the number of users and devices that can be added to a Windows Server 2012 Standard environment. For the Essentials features to function properly, the Windows Server 2012 roles and the features they depend on must not be removed or reconfigured, such as the Active Directory Domain Services role, the Web Server role, or others. Our goal is for Essentials features to work after the in-place transition for up to 75 user accounts and 75 devices. We used this goal to help scope our testing effort as well as our support statement. Customers can, of course, make any number of changes to their systems, but we had to strike a balance here of enabling customers to grow while also having a stable and supported system.

In the event that you grow beyond 75 user accounts or 75 devices, or you want to move to a different solution for specific pieces of Windows Server 2012 Essentials functionality, the Essentials features can then be turned off, which is also documented on the TechNet page. After the Essentials features are turned off, it is not possible to turn them back on.

Summary

Windows Server 2012 Essentials enables customers to grow beyond 25 users by doing an in-place license transition to Windows Server 2012 Standard. After making this transition, you will be able to continue using Essentials features with the exception of media features. Essentials features are supported for up to 75 users and 75 devices. If you grow beyond 75 or want to change the configuration of the server, we recommend that you turn off Essentials features.

So this is certainly good news for businesses who want to take advantage of more than 25 users!

What’s NOT in the box?

That would be an AC adaptor! Yes, that’s right, in order to keep the cost of the console down Nintendo are not including an AC adaptor with it. Personally I think that is a strange move as all that will happen is there will be some disappointed people if they don’t realise one isn’t included.

To be fair, the box does show “AC Adaptor is NOT included” on the box, but still, why not include the £6.99 adaptor with it? I think Nintendo assume that you already own a previous console and will use that adaptor, although they say it’s to keep it at a reasonable price.
