StableBit DrivePool for Windows Home Server 2011 Beta 1.0.2.6659 released

There has been another beta build from CoveCube! StableBit DrivePool development marches on – now its version 1.0.2.6659.

600px-Stablebit_drivepool_screen_thu16

Here is how CoveCube describes this application:

  • Combine all your hard drives into one big storage pool (except the system drive with the OS).
  • Add and remove drives from the pool at any time without re-partitioning or manually moving folders.
  • Create duplicated folders on the storage drive pool that are protected against single drive failure. If a drive fails on which a duplicated file was stored, the contents of that file will remain readable even without the drive.
  • All your data is stored in standard NTFS files. You can always access your files even if the Windows Home Server completely crashes or this add-in can’t be used.

This beta version’s change log:

1.2.0.6659

* Added visual markers on the DrivePool -> Disks tab to indicate where the balancer wants to attempt to reshuffle your files.

* Added animated arrows on the DrivePool -> Disks tab that show what the balancer is doing in real-time.

* [D] Fixed system crash under some rare conditions due to the timing of I/O operations.

* [D] Upgraded the pool balancing system. – Now uses a layered system of balancers. – Each balancer is responsible for implementing its own balancing algorithm. – A combined balancing model is built by querying all the balancers, where the upper balancers have priority over the lower balancers. – Each balancer can: – Schedule file moves for protected and un-protected files, separately. – Set up real time file placement limits on any drive. – Two types of limits are supported, hard limits and soft limits. – There are 3 built-in balancers: – Duplication Space Optimizer – A perfectly accurate duplication space optimizer that figures out if there are any files blocking the optimal use of disk space for duplicated file placement. It only moves files when it is absolutely necessary. – Prevent Drive Overfill – If any drive becomes full, and there is disk space on other drives, move some of the files to the other drives. This balancer comes with a bunch of settings letting you set up the appropriate balancing limits. – File Placement Limiter (new) – Control where new files will be placed by the real-time file placement algorithm. This balancer comes with settings that let you choose which file types go onto which drives. The algorithm sets up a “soft limit” which will be broken if all of the drives in the system are “full”. “Full” is defined in the settings pane and defaults to 90% full. – There is a simple API for building 3rd party balancers (exposed in DrivePool.Integration.dll – not enabled yet). – Each balancer can be enabled / disable or rearranged in the stack by the user. – A balancer can come with a WPF user control for any settings that have to be exposed to the user. – Each balancer stores its settings in a settings state object that is automatically serialized / de-serialized for the balancer by the system.

Little Big Planet is coming to the PS Vita.  Sony gave an update at Gamescom; read on for details.

11832LBP PSVITA STACKED LOGO2

Sony told us some more about the PS Vita release of Little Big Planet at Gamescom in Koln this week.  First, some input from Sony on the game:

Storyline

On the fairground planet of Carnivalia, a puppeteer creates wonderful toys full of all his joy and love of life to star in his travelling shows. But being forever hidden behind the scenes, The Puppeteer grows lonely and bitter and the magic of his shows begins to fade – until one day, he is booed off stage.

In a fit of rage, The Puppeteer throws his toys away and retreats into isolation. Left feeling hollow inside, he becomes obsessed with creating replacement toys to fill the void and takes control of Carnivalia, using the planet to extract people’s happiness and give life to his new creations.

But joy and laughter are essential elements of the Imagisphere, and every piece stolen for himself destroys the glue that holds LittleBigPlanet together, leaving it torn, tattered, and coming apart at the seams. Realising the error of his ways, The Puppeteer tries to put a stop to his experiments. But the joy-stealing process has created an army of mean-spirited creatures called The Hollows, who imprison The Puppeteer and take his experiments in an evil new direction.

Now, to save LittleBigPlanet and return Carnivalia to a place of fun and laughter, Sackboy™ must discover the truth behind The Puppeteer’s actions and reunite him
with his long lost puppet friends.

Key Features:

•Join Sackboy in a whole new adventure for the first time on PS Vita and travel through five colourful Carnivalia worlds using all of the PS Vita system’s functions.

•Interact with the LittleBigPlanet in more ways than ever before using all of the intuitive PS Vita system controls to create and play your own games.

•Create your own arcade style mini-games to save, share with other LittleBigPlanet™ players and enjoy wherever you are.

•Play multiplayer games with up to three friends using multi-touch and the “Pass’n’Play” system.

•Take the fun online and play alongside up to three of Sackboy’s friends via online or Ad Hoc Mode.

•Automatically unlock and use any LittleBigPlanet™ content you’ve previously downloaded on PS3™ or PSP® (PlayStation®Portable).

Expendables 2 Game Review

0

UbiSoft recently released Expendables 2 on the PlayStation and today for the Xbox; we review the PlayStation version. Read on for details. Box Art UbiSoft recently released Expendables 2, a tie-in with the Sly Stallone movie of the same name. I downloaded and played it on the PS3; here is my review. First, from UbiSoft, a description of the game.

Four Expendables (Barney, Gunner, Caesar and Yin Yang) are hired to rescue a kidnapped Chinese billionaire. It’s business as usual, until all hell breaks loose and the explosive mix of testosterone and kerosene detonates in a massive fireball that never lets up! The Expendables 2 Videogame lets fans experience all of their favorite explosive moments as their favorite action stars. Key Features Over-The-Top Action Experience intense firepower, massive explosions and relentless opposition as you play out all of your favorite over-the-top action moments! 4-Player Co-op Team up with three of your friends for Expendables co-op action. Take on the singleplayer campaign or compete in the many challenge modes and work together to join the elite ranks. Expendables Characters Play as some of the most memorable characters from The Expendables movies: Barney Ross, Yin Yang, Gunner Jensen and Hale Caesar. Challenge Modes Challenge yourself, your buddies or the rest of the worldwide leaderboards in the many Expendables challenge modes that unlock as you play through the intense campaign. Vehicular Combat Take it to the enemy as you fly choppers, airplanes, drive 4×4’s and wreak havoc with your entire vehicular arsenal. Signature Cinematic Kills Experience some of the most gratifying finishes ever with a close-up dynamic camera capturing your entire array of stylish signature moves for each Expendables character. Battle in Foreign Terrain Battle in tactical, assault, stealth and melee missions from the forested Balkan countryside to the mountainous Somalian deserts, Kowloon industrial docks, Burmese Jungles and much more.

UbiSoft promises combat action that never lets up, 4 way multiplayer, and more explosions per capita than most games of this nature. And they largely succeed in delivering an arcade shoot-‘em-up that is fun to play, but it is not without its faults. Here are my impressions.

Gameplay

You spend most of your time moving across a battlefield with your three partners, blasting enemies as you strive to rescue the Chinese billionaire from the clutches of evil. The map scrolling allows you to transit the area of operations; you don’t need a compass heading as the map only allows you to head in the right direction. The view is largely overhead, where it can be hard to tell what character and weapon you are controlling. The aiming system is highly inaccurate, and I found that I had to charge particular enemies and stab them with a knife rather than point and shoot them. This can impede the progress of gameplay. Zooming in to see the action was not very fluid and aiming was rough at best. You can switch between characters, handy as each one has a different weapon loadout. In addition, if you are injured, you heal by laying down on the battlefield, where you can fire a pistol to defend yourself. The game sometimes requires you to switch to complete tasks, like the explosives team member being needed to blast into an enemy compound. The multiplayer support would make this a more entertaining game as you can play with buddies and cooperate in the mission. The enemy AI is not very good; they blindly run out into your gunfire and routinely take stands next to explosive barrels. Which you promptly shoot, causing them to explode and wipe out your enemies. The weapons include shot guns, assault rifles, pistols and knives. And hand grenades and RPG’s…who can forget those weapons?

The Last of Us Q&A panel with Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson at Gamescom 2012

Yesterday here at Gamescom there was a special Q&A session for The Last of Us from Naughty Dog with the two leads, Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson. We were there and we captured the session for you.

CDW Ashley and Troy - The Last of Us

In case you haven’t heard about the forthcoming Naughty Dog game The Last of Us, here is how Sony described it:

Abandoned cities reclaimed by nature. A population decimated by a modern plague. Survivors are killing each other for food, weapons; whatever they can get their hands on.

Joel, a brutal survivor, and Ellie, a young teenage girl who’s braver and wiser beyond her years, must work together if they hope to survive their journey across the US.

The Q&A session lasted about 45 minutes and gave everyone an interesting look at how Troy and Ashley got involved in The Last of Us and it’s ongoing production.

And here is the video:

And this is what their characters look like in the game:

The Last of Us by Naughty Dog, and published by Sony exclusively for the PlayStation 3 will be out next year, I can’t wait.
