Sky+ getting updates including Undelete, On Demand and Catch Up TV

Sky have posted some details of their next update for Sky+ and it includes new features including undelete, On Demand and Catch Up TV.

epg_1_thumb1

This is what Sky posted:

Even more exciting new features for Sky+

We’re updating some of our Sky+HD boxes, so you might notice some new features on your Sky Guide soon. In particular, we’re adding an Undelete feature, which promises to make accidentally deleting a show from your Planner a thing of the past. Also, Sky Anytime and Anytime+ will become On Demand, so there’s one convenient place to find the TV shows you want when you want them.
Plus, we’re getting your Sky+HD box ready for Catch Up TV, one more way to make sure you never miss the shows that matter to you on Sky, ITV Player, Demand 5 and later on, BBC iPlayer.

Undelete

We’re adding a new feature to Sky+ called Undelete, so you’ll never miss a TV show because you’ve accidentally deleted it from your Planner. All deleted shows will be added to the Deleted tab and you’ll be able to restore them to your Planner or delete them permanently from there. The Deleted tab will be found to the left of your Planner’s All tab.

There’s no need to worry that you’ll fill up your hard disk with this new feature. The oldest items will be deleted automatically and permanently if you need more space for new recordings.

On Demand and Catch Up TV

Sky Anytime and Anytime+ will soon appear as On Demand in your Sky Guide, making it simpler for you to find the shows you want when you want them.
You’ll find great boxsets of some of our most popular shows, like Stella, Mad Dogs and An Idiot Abroad, as well as top shows shown exclusively on Sky Atlantic, available to download at the touch of a button 24 hours a day, all at no extra monthly cost.
Also, we’ll soon be launching Catch Up TV, so you’ll be able to get the best shows from the last seven days on Sky channels, ITV Player, Demand 5 and shortly after launch, BBC iPlayer, through your Sky+HD box. You won’t need to gather around your laptop to recap the week’s best shows. They’ll be available to enjoy on your TV, in the comfort of your living room.

Other updated features

We’re updating some of the other great features on your Sky Guide. You’ll notice a new Store tab where you’ll easily be able to find movies to rent – from recent action-packed blockbusters to golden all-time classics – to watch when it suits you.

You’ll also see the Docs tab moved to the middle of your Sky Guide, to help you find amazing factual TV shows more quickly.

It’ll be easier to get the right help when using your Sky Guide’s fantastic features too. We’ve tailored Help menus to specific Sky Guide functions, like On Demand, Box Office, Parental Settings and others, to get you going if you’re ever unsure of what to do.
In addition, if you’d like to disable your iPad’s remote control features (available through the Sky+ app for iPad), you’ll be able to do so from the Sky Guide’s Parental section.

Let us know when you get updated by leaving a comment below.

How To Skip Domain Joining for Server 2012 Essentials Clients

0

In Server 2012 Essentials, clients were required to join the Server 2012 Essentials domain, which can be a real issue for some users.  Microsoft posted a workaround; we bring you details.

MSFT_logo_rgb_C-Gray_D

One of the major complaints about Server 2012 Essentials from WHS/WHS2011 users has been the requirement that clients join the Server 2012 Essentials domain.  Well, Microsoft has published a workaround, although it does remove some functionality.  Here is what was posted:

This post describes a tempory solution that allows client computers to connect to Windows Server 2012 Essentials without joining the Windows Server 2012 Essentials domain. Please read the following Notes carefully before you take any actions.

Description

When deploying Pro/Enterprise/Ultimate Windows client computers in a Windows Server 2012 Essentials network, joining the Windows Server 2012 Essentials domain is mandatory. If the client computer is already joined to another domain, you are required to manually leave the existing domain; otherwise, the client deployment process will be blocked.

Currently we have received requests from customers asking for the option to skip domain joining in a client deployment. As a result, in this article we provide a solution so that the client can connect to the server and utilize the majority of client features without joining the domain.

Before you take any action, please read the following note.

Note:

If you skip joining the domain, the following areas will be impacted:

    • All features that require that you be joined to the domain will not be available, including domain credentials, Group Policy, and VPN.
    • Any third-party add-ons and applications that require that you join the domain will not be working properly.
    • Skipping domain joining in an off-premises client deployment is not supported.
    • This solution is only supported on the following Windows client versions:
      • Windows 7 Professional
      • Windows 7 Enterprise
      • Windows 7 Ultimate
      • Windows 8 Pro
      • Windows 8 Enterprise

To skip joining the domain during a client deployment

  1. On your client computer, go to Start and search for command prompt “cmd“.
  2. In the search results, find cmd.exe and run as administrator.
  3. Type the following command prompt:
    reg add “HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Server\ClientDeployment” /v SkipDomainJoin /t REG_DWORD /d 1
  4. Complete the steps on the Connect Computers to the Server Help topic.

This is good news!  If you plan on implementing Server 2012 Essentials, you now have a choice to join clients to the domain.

Today, Amazon is excited to announce that it’s taking on the high-end with Kindle Fire HD—the next generation of Kindle Fire.

The Kindle Fire HD familythe most-advanced tablets:

  • Best cross-platform interoperability, with Amazon apps available on the largest number of devices and platforms so customers can access content anytime, anywhere.

Amazon is also introducing an all-new upgraded version of the best-selling standard definition Kindle Fire with a faster processor, twice the memory and longer battery life—all for an even lower breakthrough price—only $159. Meet the all-new Kindle Fire family at www.amazon.com/kindlefirehd.

“We’re taking on the most popular price point for a tablet, $499, but doubling the storage and incredibly, adding ultra-fast 4G LTE wireless,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO. “Kindle Fire HD is not only the most-advanced hardware, it’s also a service. When combined with our enormous content ecosystem, unmatched cross-platform interoperability and standard-setting customer service, we hope people will agree that Kindle Fire HD is the best high-end tablet anywhere, at any price.”

The Best Hardware

Stunning Custom HD Display

The 8.9” display on Kindle Fire HD features an incredible 254 pixels per inch with a resolution of 1920×1200, with pixels that are indistinguishable to the human eye. The 7” Kindle Fire HD features a stunning HD display with 1280×800 resolution that delivers deep, detailed contrast and rich, natural color. Kindle Fire HD also uses Gorilla Glass to provide superior strength and reliability. Kindle Fire HD starts with excellent resolution, but that is only the beginning—Amazon also added custom features that reduce glare and improve color saturation at any viewing angle.

Most tablet displays are made up of two pieces of glass—an LCD on the bottom and a touch sensor on the top, separated by an air gap. This air gap allows light to come through the touch sensor and reflect off the LCD, which causes added glare for the user. Fire HD solves this air gap problem by laminating the touch sensor and the LCD together into a single layer of glass, creating a display that is easy to view even in overhead light, and reducing glare by 25% relative to the latest generation iPad.

Like many tablets, Kindle Fire HD uses in-plane switching (IPS) to improve color reproduction. But displays that only use IPS still appear washed out at various angles, such as laid sideways in bed, flat on a table, or propped up in a case. Fire HD features an Advanced True Wide polarizing filter that is applied directly to the LCD panel. This results in a display that shows the same deep contrast and rich, detailed color from any angle.

Amazon Announces New Kindle E-Reader Line

Amazon announced a new Kindle E-Reader line today.  Read on for details.

Kindle_Paperwhite

Amazon announced three new e-readers today.  Here are some of the details:

Higher resolution, 62% more pixels, 25% higher-contrast, patented built-in front light, 8 weeks of battery life and an even slimmer and sleeker design — only $119

New Kindle Paperwhite Wi-Fi + 3G — the top-of-the-line Kindle with free 3G wireless — only $179

New latest generation Kindle — small, light and even faster — now only $69

SEATTLE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sep. 6, 2012– (NASDAQ:AMZN)—Kindle is the world’s #1 best-selling e-reader for five years running, and tens of millions of readers are already reading on Kindle. Today, Amazon is excited to introduce the fifth generation Kindle e-readers: Kindle Paperwhite is the most advanced e-reader ever constructed with 62% more pixels and 25% increased contrast, a patented built-in front light for reading in all lighting conditions, up to 8 weeks of battery life, and a thin and light design for just $119; Kindle Paperwhite Wi-Fi + 3G — never pay for or hunt for a Wi-Fi hotspot with the all-new top-of-the-line Kindle e-reader with free 3G wireless for just $179; and the new latest generation Kindle, the lightest and smallest Kindle, now with new, improved fonts, faster page turns and an even more unbelievable price: $69. Meet the all-new Kindle e-reader family at www.amazon.com/kindlepaperwhite.

“Paperwhite is the Kindle we’ve always wanted to build — the technology didn’t exist to build a display with this level of contrast, resolution, brightness and battery life, so our engineers invented it,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO. “62% more pixels, 25% higher contrast, built-in front light, perfect for bed, perfect for beach, even thinner, 8 weeks of battery life — this is a quantum leap forward and the best Kindle we’ve ever built by far.”

All-New Kindle Paperwhite — The World’s Most Advanced E-Reader

Most Advanced E-Reader Display, 62% More Pixels, 25% More Contrast

Kindle Paperwhite’s display is the most advanced e-reader display ever constructed. Featuring a 212 ppi display, Kindle Paperwhite has 62% more pixels, making text in books and periodicals crisp and clear at any size. Images are sharper, richer and show even more detail. Kindle Paperwhite’s screen has 25% higher contrast — the blacks are blacker, and the whites are whiter.

Innovative Built-In Light

Backlit LCD displays direct light up through the display into the user’s eyes. Kindle Paperwhite’s patented front-lit display guides light underneath an anti-glare layer and down toward the display, away from the reader’s eyes. This means a reader can read for hours without eye fatigue or strain. The screen brightness is easily adjusted for reading in any light. The Paperwhite display provides an unparalleled experience in the dark and in direct sunlight.

Breakthrough Battery Life

Kindle Paperwhite’s built-in front light is designed to be used at all times — both in daylight and in a dark room — for the clearest, crispest reading experience. In order to use the light at all times, Kindle Paperwhite requires exceptional power management to maintain the battery life that customers love about Kindle. Amazon’s light guide technology precisely diffuses the light across the screen and only requires four LEDs to light the entire screen (unlike LCD screens which can use up to 50 LEDs). The light guide is so efficient that Kindle Paperwhite has a remarkable 8 weeks of battery life, even with the light on at all times.

Free 3G

Kindle’s free 3G connection means customers never have to hunt for or pay for a Wi-Fi hotspot — they simply download and read books anytime, anywhere in over 100 countries around the world. Amazon pays for the 3G connection on Kindle Paperwhite Wi-Fi + 3G, so customers pay no monthly fees and sign no annual contracts.

Built-In Wi-Fi

Kindle Paperwhite comes with built-in Wi-Fi, letting readers discover new content at home or on the road. Kindle owners also enjoy free Wi-Fi access at AT&T hotspots across the US.

New Touch Technology

Kindle Paperwhite’s new capacitive touch technology is uniquely integrated into the Paperwhite display, allowing for a thinner form factor for Kindle Paperwhite and even better touch accuracy.

Slim and Sleek Design

At just over a third of an inch thin and weighing 7.5 ounces, Kindle Paperwhite is thinner than a magazine and weighs less than a typical paperback. The bezel height between the side of the device and the display itself is 77% thinner.

Hand-Tuned Fonts

Every font on Kindle Paperwhite is hand-tuned for maximum readability. The Amazon typography team worked at the pixel level to ensure consistency of stroke thickness and shape profiles across all individual glyphs, aligning each size to the specific grid of the new Paperwhite display. This allows for unprecedented sharpness of fonts. Kindle Paperwhite’s higher resolution display also allows for new elegant typeface options, such as Baskerville and Palatino, which use thin stems that would not render well on any lower resolution display.

Could the Lumia 920 and 820 Come to Verizon or AT&T?

1

Nokia announced two new Lumia smartphones today: the Lumia 920 and 820.  We look at the detailed specs to see if either could be coming to Verizon or AT&T.

IMG_9970

We told you a little earlier today about Nokia’s new Lumia phones.  One thing that was not announced was the carrier support for either model.  This announcement was for the US, so the potential carriers break down as follows:

GSM:
  • AT&T Wireless
  • T-mobile
CDMA:
  • Verizon
  • Sprint

There are other smaller carriers in the US, but these four are by far the largest with AT&T and Verizon being the two largest.

Prior Windows Phones launched primarily on AT&T, which makes sense as GSM-equipped phones can sell on AT&T and on GSM carriers around the world.  This time, there was no exclusive deal announced.  Is it possible that these phone could launch on multiple carriers here in the US?  I decided to look at the specs and see which radios were on board.  If only GSM/HSPA+ radios are here, then AT&T and T-mobile are the only major carriers that could sell the phones.  What did I find?

Lumia 920 Specs

Here is the radio specifications on the Lumia 920, from Nokia’s website.

Operating Frequency
Bands
  • GSM 850
  • GSM 900
  • GSM 1800
  • GSM 1900
  • WCDMA Band V (850)
  • WCDMA Band VIII (900)
  • WCDMA Band II (1900)
  • WCDMA Band I (2100)
  • LTE 800
  • LTE 900
  • LTE 1800
  • LTE 2100
  • LTE 2600

This phone appears to have quadband GSM support, quadband CDMA support and pentaband LTE support.  If all of these radios are indeed onboard, then this phone could run on any major carrier network in the US.  It also means that it would serve as an awfully nice world phone as all major international bands are available to the device.  You see the exact same radio specs for the Lumia 820 device.  This is not surprising as the SOC at the heart of these phones is the same ones as used on the Galaxy S III that was announced earlier this year, and that phone has been released on both AT&T and Verizon here Stateside.  And it is either available as a world roamer (AT&T) or will be shortly (Verizon).

Conclusion

In short, these new Lumia models are capable of running on all major US carriers.  This is huge as Nokia needs a real hit, and keeping the Windows Phone 8 Lumias on one US carrier only would impede market penetration.  Here’s hoping that we see the Lumia 920 and 820 on AT&T, Verizon, T-mobile and Sprint in the coming months, and as we see actual carrier announcements, we’ll let you know.

Nokia Launches Lumia 920 and 820 Phones

2

Nokia announced two new phones in New York today, the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820.  We have some details!

Nokia-Lumia-920-Yellow-Portrait

Nokia took the wraps off of two new Windows Phone 8 handsets today, the flagship Lumia 920 and the mid-range 820.  Both of these handsets carry pentaband LTE and also HSPA+ radios, making them world-capable and compatible with the major US carriers.  Hoorray!

Here is some of the Nokia announcement:

The Nokia Lumia 920 brings a raft of technology firsts to the table, on top of all the great advantages offered by Windows Phone 8 and exceptional industrial design, making it our new flagship smartphone device and what we believe is the world’s most innovative phone.

Image is everything

This is the best camera we’ve ever put in a smartphone. It offers the latest in PureView technology to allow for photography in much lower light conditions than has ever been the case on a smartphone previously. This is combined with genuine Optical Image Stabilization for dramatically reduced blur and movement.

In the words of Nokia EVP for Smart Devices, Jo Harlow, the PureView technology found in the Lumia 920 makes “it possible for a smartphone camera to take the kind of images usually only seen on a standalone SLR camera”.

The Lumia 920 also features PureMotion HD+ display technology, powering its generous 4.5-inch screen with the fastest, brightest, most-sensitive and highest resolution display ever seen in this market.

More power; more speed

Power management for smartphones reaches unprecedented levels of usability with our largest ever battery (2000mAh). And now wireless charging – available on both the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 – makes topping up your power level faster and more convenient than ever before, both at home and in the office, and at venues such as cafes and airport lounges.

Our second Windows Phone 8 device is the Nokia Lumia 820. Here again, you’ll be able to experience all the new features of the platform in a stunningly designed package, a 4.3-inch screen, and the same fantastic performance levels offered by the 1.5GHz Dual Core Snapdragon S4 processor common to each device. The Lumia 820 meets the needs of the modern phone user with an exchangeable shell design for sports, going out with friends or staying charged the whole day.

Windows Phone 8 offers advantages like Internet Explorer 10, deeper integration with your PC, improved business grade security, together with the more personal, people-centred approach to showing and using information that has delighted users of earlier Lumia smartphones.

Finding the future

On the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, our signature Location apps are extended and made more powerful:

  • Nokia Maps for Windows Phone 8 is going to work offline and will integrate walk navigation, an augmented reality view and venue maps.
  • We’ve refreshed Nokia Transport to support search history, to get automatic over-the-air coverage updates, to be more user friendly and to integrate Nokia Maps walk navigation.
  • Nokia City Lens is even better on Lumia powered by Windows Phone 8: you can now decide to get information only about the places in your line of sight and pin category tiles to the start screen.

Location on the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 get a further, hardware-based boost with autonomous assisted GPS and GLONASS receivers. This means that you can see yourself on a map within seconds, even when you’re offline.

Our new Lumia phones come in a wide and vivid range of colours. The Nokia Lumia 920 comes in yellow, red, grey, white and black. The Nokia Lumia 820 goes two steps further with yellow, red, grey, cyan, purple, white and black models.

Both phones will be available in select markets in pentaband LTE and HSPA+ variants later this year. Prices and release dates will be revealed in separate, later announcements.

There’s a lot to take in here. And we’ll be covering each part of these announcements in separate, detailed posts and videos. Stay tuned over the next days to learn more about latest in PureView, wireless charging, Location, PureMotion HD+ and to see the two new devices in more detail.

Upcoming Raspberry Pi board revision details released

Details of the upcoming Raspberry Pi board revision have been released – read on for details.

CDW---2nd-London-Raspberry-Jam---12_

This is what was posted on the Raspberry Pi blog:

Update: A lot of people are asking when revision 2.0 boards will appear in the wild. They’ll be filtering out over the next month as the last stocks of the revision 1.0 at each distributor and in each geography are exhausted. I’m aware of at least one person who has received a revision 2.0 board already (from Farnell, in the UK).

We don’t believe that the changes are large enough to make it worth “holding on” for revision 2.0, unless you have a specific requirement to add an audio codec or you need mounting holes for some industrial application.

In the six months since we launched Raspberry Pi, we’ve received a lot of feedback about the original board design. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be gradually rolling out a new revision 2.0 PCB which incorporates some of the most popular suggestions. You can determine which board revision you have by typing cat /proc/cpuinfo at the command line and looking up the hardware revision code in the following table:

MODEL AND REVISION    CODE(S)
Model B Revision 1.0    2
Model B Revision 1.0 + ECN0001 (no fuses, D14 removed)    3
Model B Revision 2.0    4, 5, 6
There has been a small change to the GPIO pin out of revision 2.0, to add ARM JTAG support and to present a different I2C peripheral from that which is (heavily) used on the camera interface. Users wishing to produce portable GPIO code should either avoid using the these pins, or add code to check the board revision and behave appropriately.

Reset

A reset circuit has been implemented, although in the standard build the required header is not fitted. Users wishing to use this circuit should fit an appropriate header to P6. Shorting P6 pin 1 to P6 pin 2 will cause the BCM2835 to reset.

USB Output Power

The resetable fuses protecting the USB outputs have been removed. This feature was implemented on some later revision 1.0 PCBs by replacing the fuses with links; revision 2.0 permanently implements this modification. It is now possible to reliably power the RPI from a USB hub that back feeds power, but it is important that the chosen hub cannot supply more than 2.5A under fault conditions.

JTAG Debug Support

Two GPIO pins have been interchanged to allow a missing debug signal (ARM_TMS) to appear on P1 pin 13.

Originally the connections were:

CAM_GPIO [BCM2835/GPIO27] routed to S5 pin 11
GPIO_GEN2 [BCM2835/GPIO21] routed to P1 pin 13
The new connections are:

CAM_GPIO [BCM2835/GPIO21] routed to S5 pin 11
GPIO_GEN2 [BCM2835/GPIO27] routed to P1 pin 13
I2C Support on P1/P6

The primary and secondary I2C channels have been reversed.

Originally the connections were:

SCL0 [BCM2835/GPIO1] routed to P1 pin 5
SDA0 [BCM2835/GPIO0] routed to P1 pin 3
SCL1 [BCM2835/GPIO3] routed to S5 pin 13
SDA1 [BCM2835/GPIO2] routed to S5 pin 14
The new connections are:

SCL0 [BCM2835/GPIO1] routed to S5 pin 13
SDA0 [BCM2835/GPIO0] routed to S5 pin 14
SCL1 [BCM2835/GPIO3] routed to P1 pin 5
SDA1 [BCM2835/GPIO2] routed to P1 pin 3
Version Identification Links

The four GPIO signals originally used for version identification have been removed. These were never read by the system software and were redundant.

Additional I/O Expansion

To utilise GPIO signals released by the removal of the version identification links, a new connector site P5 has been added. This carries the four GPIO signals [BCM2835/GPIO28 – BCM2835/GPIO31] named GPIO7 – GPIO10 respectively, along with +5V0, +3V3 and two 0V. Currently this connector is not populated.

This GPIO allocation provides access to one of:

SDA0, SCL0 (Operating independently of P1 SDA1, SCL1); or
PCM_CLK, PCM_FS, PCM_DIN, PCM_DOUT or I2S; or
Four GPIO signals.
This connector is intended to be a suitable attachment point for third-party clock and audio codec boards, and is pinned to be mounted (ideally) on the underside due to connector clash. Pin 1 is marked with the square pad (top left – looking from the top).

+5V0 Leakage from HDMI

Some users have found that connecting an unpowered Raspberry Pi to an HDMI television interferes with the correct operation of CEC for other connected devices. This was fixed on some later revision 1.0 PCBs by removing the ESD protection diode D14; revision 2.0 fixes this issue by connecting the top side of the diode to +5V0_HDMI.

SMSC +1V8

The SMSC 1V8 power has been disconnected from the system supply.

Mounting Holes!

Two 2.5mm (drilled 2.9mm for M2.5 screw) non plated mounting holes have been provided to assist with ATE test mounting. Positions of these holes relative to the bottom left of the PCB (Power Input Corner) are:

Corner: 0.0mm,0.0mm
First Mount: 25.5mm,18.0mm
Second Mount: 80.1mm, 43.6mm
Warning: If used to permanently mount the PCB – do not over tighten screws or drill out to fit larger screws, as this will lead to damage to the PCB.

LED Marking

Two minor changes have been made to the silk screen:

D9 (Yellow LED) graphic changed from the incorrect 10M to 100
D5 (Green LED) graphic changed from OK to ACT (Activity)
