Ultimate Gaming Experience
Old rivalries can be settled and new ones created in up to 8 player online.  Journey through the All-Stars’ world to take on a huge range of modes and challenges, including Grand Prix, Battle arenas and an incredible world tour.

Playing On the Wii U

The game is a lot of fun, but what makes it even more fun is playing on the Wii U. Up to five players can play – 4 on normal controllers and one lucky player using the Wii U controller. Needless to say I managed to hog the Wii U controller for my entire game play experience.

CDW Preview of Sonic on Wii U - 2

When you are playing multiplayer the Wii U controller becomes your screen and I was very impressed how well the game played on the controller.

If you are playing single player, the screen on the Wii U controller becomes a map showing your progress in the game.

There are certain things that can only be done on the Wii U controller – for example, if you give the controller a flick of the wrist then a rear view mirror appears on the controller so you can see behind you.

You can also play the game using motion controls, but that makes it a lot harder, although still a lot of fun!

The track selection is a lot of fun – my particular favourite is Carrier Zone which is based on the classic arcade game of my youth, Afterburner. You get to drive a car and fly – what more can you ask for?

I was also very pleased to see that each lap around a track was different – one lap could be water, then the next lap flying, then the final lap driving. This makes the game more interesting and a lot of fun as you are not sure what’s coming next.

The character selections are great too – there are lots of classic characters to choose from, including the recently announced Wreck It Ralph, from the movie of the same name.

During the game you can earn sticker awards which are added to your driving licence, so you can try to beat your friends and family and get the most stickers – it all adds to the competition.

This is a great game for all the family and is a lot of fun (there’s that word again), and its going to be a great Wii U launch title too!

Expect our full review soon.

So what do you think, is it a game you are going to buy?

Microsoft Announces Departure of Windows President Steven Sinofsky

0

Microsoft has announced that Windows President Steven Sinofsky is leaving the company and Julie Larson-Green will be promoted to lead all Windows software and hardware engineering. Tami Reller retains her roles as chief financial officer and chief marketing officer and will assume responsibility for the business of Windows. Both executives will report directly to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

These changes are effective immediately.
“I am grateful for the many years of work that Steven has contributed to the company,” Ballmer said. “The products and services we have delivered to the market in the past few months mark the launch of a new era at Microsoft. We’ve built an incredible foundation with new releases of Microsoft Office, Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, Microsoft Surface, Windows Server 2012 and ‘Halo 4,’ and great integration of services such as Bing, Skype and Xbox across all our products. To continue this success it is imperative that we continue to drive alignment across all Microsoft teams, and have more integrated and rapid development cycles for our offerings.”
“It is impossible to count the blessings I have received over my years at Microsoft. I am humbled by the professionalism and generosity of everyone I have had the good fortune to work with at this awesome company,” Sinofsky said.
Since 1993, Larson-Green has worked on and led some of the most successful products for Microsoft, including the user experiences for early versions of Internet Explorer, and helped drive the thinking behind the refresh of the user experience for Microsoft Office. For Windows 7 and Windows 8 she was responsible for program management, user interface design and research, as well as development of all international releases. She has a master’s degree in software engineering from Seattle University and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Western Washington University. In her new role she will be responsible for all future Windows product development in addition to future hardware opportunities.
“Leading Windows engineering is an incredible challenge and opportunity, and as I looked at the technical and business skills required to continue our Windows trajectory — great communication skills, a proven ability to work across product groups, strong design, deep technical expertise, and a history of anticipating and meeting customer needs — it was clear to me that Julie is the best possible person for this job, and I’m excited to have her in this role,” Ballmer said.
Reller joined Windows in 2007 from the Microsoft Dynamics Division where she held a number of leadership positions. She began her career in technology at Great Plains Software in 1984 while still in college, and was the company’s chief financial officer at the time the company was acquired by Microsoft in 2001. She has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Minnesota State University Moorhead and an MBA from St. Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif. In her expanded role she will assume the lead in driving business and marketing strategy for Windows devices, including Surface and partner devices, in addition to her current marketing and finance responsibilities.
This executive shakeup follows one at Apple which saw Jony Ive, Bob Mansfield, Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi add more responsibilities to their roles, Scott Forstall removed as SVP of iOS, and John Browett removed as SVP Retail.
