Microsoft has announced that they are expanding the retail distribution for the Surface With Windows RT, with as-yet-unnamed retailers in the US and Australia coming before Christmas.  Other regions should see retail availability in venues other than the Microsoft Store in early 2013.  Here is the press release:

Microsoft Increases Production and Expands Retail Distribution for Microsoft Surface With Windows RT

Dec. 11, 2012

Makes Surface available at additional retailers, extends successful Microsoft holiday stores into new year.

REDMOND, Wash. — Dec. 11, 2012 — Microsoft Corp. today announced plans to make Microsoft Surface available at additional retailers as soon as mid-December. In addition, the company announced the extension of the Microsoft holiday stores, including the transition of several of the stores into permanent Microsoft retail outlets.

“The public reaction to Surface has been exciting to see. We’ve increased production and are expanding the ways in which customers can interact with, experience and purchase Surface,” said Panos Panay, general manager, Microsoft Surface.

As early as mid-December, consumers will be able to go to retail stores in the United States and Australia to purchase a Surface with Windows RT. Additional availability will be added in a number of countries in the coming months.

“Our plan has been to expand the retail presence for Surface after the first of the year. Based on interest from retailers, we are giving them the option to carry Surface with Windows RT even earlier,” said Steve Schueler, corporate vice president, Microsoft Retail Sales and Marketing.

Surface will continue to be available for purchase at all Microsoft retail stores in the United States and Canada and online in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. Based on the success of the Microsoft holiday stores, the company will extend all of these locations into the new year. These stores will transition into either permanent brick-and-mortar retail outlets or specialty store locations.

Microsoft stores will continue to offer best-in-class technology and a premium retail experience, allowing customers to interact with Microsoft products that impact the way people live, work and play. All Microsoft stores provide consumers with the same excellent choice, value and service in an engaging way to experience the best of Microsoft products.

Starting at US$499, Surface combines the functionality of a laptop with the portability of a tablet. From the fun and unique touch cover that provides a super-thin, spill-resistant keyboard in a variety of vibrant colors to the integrated kickstand that enables hands-free entertainment, Surface stands out while delivering value and performance like nothing else on the market. With Windows apps, SkyDrive cloud connectivity, HD video, Xbox Music, games, a full-size USB port, a microSD card slot and the productivity of Office Home & Student 2013 RT, Surface with Windows RT brings work and play together in style.

I’d expect to see the Surface With Windows RT in Best Buy in the next week Stateside (total unfounded speculation on my part).  This is a good development as Microsoft Store coverage is not what it needs to be to get this product ramped up.  Good news!

Review of Ben 10: Omniverse by Monkey Bar Games

0

Star of the popular Cartoon Network series Ben 10, Ben Tennyson (see what they did there?), struts his shape-shifting stuff in his latest video game venture; Ben 10: Omniverse on the PS3.

PLOT

Ben has an incredibly handy magic watch that he wears called an Omnitrix which allows him to take on the form of various different aliens. His trusty companion Rook, who is apparently a plumber, has an equally handy tool that allows him to use different weapons depending on what he needs. I don’t quite get why Rook is a plumber or why a plumber is able to do the things Rook can and the game makes no attempt at explaining this to non Ben 10 veterans. Rather unsurprisingly right from square one Ben 10: Omniverse is clearly aimed at existing fans of the series.

The plot is a slightly dumbed down version of any standard time-travel/multiple-universe quest with certain levels based in the past with a young Ben 10 and some in the present with teen Ben 10. It’s not too patronizing and makes sense as far as time travel and related issues go but most of the time it doesn’t add anything to the game.

The tutorial reminds me of something from the last generation, at best. Every 30 seconds or so a full screen pop-up will impose itself on you pausing the game until your finished reading it. Even if the instructions had just been read out and remained on-screen as subtitles it would have been a much more integrated experience.

COMBAT & UPGRADES

Combat is bar far the most important part of Ben 10. Not because it’s ground breaking but because if you play Ben 10 you need to be prepared to spend 96% of your time doing it. I cannot stress enough how repetitive and basic it is. Each alien has the same six moves once they are at level 3 and some have special moves where you hold “R2” and press a face button. This is literally the full extent of the variation in Ben 10.

A group of enemies will spawn for you to fight and once you have defeated them all you move to another area and defeat another set of enemies. At some point you will reach a simple puzzle, all of which are the same format, and eventually fight a boss.

The bosses are just bigger enemies with more health and a few unique moves. There are at most a dozen enemies on the entire game, not included bosses, which really drives home just how repetitive Ben 10 is.

Each alien can be upgraded twice which unlocks the move sets mentioned above and each level costs 2000 xp. Experience is earned by opening special containers and defeating enemies but its easy to get and almost perfectly worked out so that all your aliens are fully upgraded by the end of the game.

Rook plays your co-op partner that is either controlled by a second local player or the AI. Rook can also be upgraded and by default this is done automatically and seems to make little difference. The AI controls Rook fairly well but he really just acts as a sponge taking some of the damage instead of you.

The animations on the moves actually look very good with some surprisingly cool effects at times. The problem is whilst they all look very unique and different the moves themselves all essentially accomplish the same thing.

In reality there are actually only about four different aliens on the game if you don’t take into account differences in appearance. Some use heavy area attacks, some have stun attacks, some are fast and some have ranged attacks.

Using any of the moves the aliens have will drain your Omnitrix energy and once it’s depleted you will have to wait for it to recharge. It doesn’t take long but it does mean that during each battle some of your time will be spent spamming the same move over and over and the rest spent as Ben running around in circles waiting for his Omnitrix to recharge.

To make the repetition even worse certain moves of certain aliens seem to drain the Omnitrix less than others so I found myself using the same move and the same aliens constantly. And if you’re unfortunate enough to accidentally press “L1” and return to Ben’s natural form early you cannot change back until the Omnitrix is fully recharged which tediously extends the running around as Ben section of the battle.

This is not helped by totally unresponsive controls which at times have you frantically mashing at a button to switch to an alien form, I found standing still so I was only pressing one button at a time usually did the trick but it just added to things that stopped what little flow the game has.

MAP DESIGN

The level design is unbelievably linear and forced. You are just simply not allowed to explore as there is only ever one way to go. Apart from a couple of exceptions the collectibles are in front of you or you are at shown where to go to get them.

The camera is fixed and you cannot move it at all. Most of the time this isn’t a problem but there are a few times where the frustration of being told where to look got to me. The bigger problem is that the camera pans really slowly. So slowly that I found myself waiting for it otherwise risk the ten second re-spawn timer coming on.

Your co-op partner Rook gets caught by the camera almost constantly and has to re-spawn. There is no punishment for this but it is annoying. What’s worse is when the level is designed so badly that you fall through holes in the floor that aren’t there and have to replay a good ten minutes of combat. In one area this happened to me four times in a row.

Progression to the next area is always halted by a green barrier that inexplicably disappears once you have defeated the wave of enemies before you. Occasionally enemies can spawn but not move or attack in any way which made them a little tricky to find, defeat and therefore move to the next area.

VISUALS

Though they lack substance, the alien attack animations look good and are all unique and varied. The level design is poor but the textures are good and apart from some weird spawning there where no graphical glitches. Ben 10 makes a good attempt at cell shading and looks very cartoon-like but there is nothing new, unique or exciting at work.

SOUND

The music is repetitive and therefore gets boring by the end of the game. The sound effects in the combat are not too bad but there are only really a hand-full of different effects so again these get boring quite early on. Voice acting is good and clear to understand and some of the brief conversations enemies have before a fight are actually funny.

CONCLUSION

Three of the four hours it takes to complete Ben 10 are spent repeatedly performing incredibly basic combat moves and running around waiting until you are able to perform incredibly basic combat moves and the other hour being shuffled like cattle along the linear level design and falling through holes in the floor that aren’t really there.

Ben 10: Omniverse doesn’t fulfill the absolute number one rule of gaming which is to entertain. It is boring, repetitive, uninspired and dull. There may be some appeal for younger gamers who are fans of the Ben 10 cartoon but there are simply better games at the same price mark that are still child or family friendly that don’t just feel like a developer cashing in on a popular franchise name.

Ben 10: Omniverse is available now on PS3, XBOX 360, Wii U, Wii, 3DS and DS.

Intel has updated their Atom line of processors, delivering a 6-watt server-class product aimed at micro servers. Here is the announcement:

Intel Delivers the World’s First 6-Watt Server-Class Processor

Several Equipment Makers Building Microservers, Storage and Networking Systems Based on 64-bit Intel® Atom™ Processor S1200 Product Family

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Intel® Atom™ processor S1200 server system on-chip hits lower-power levels, and includes key features such as error code correction, 64-bit support, and virtualization technologies required for use inside data centers.
  • More than 20 low-power designs including microservers, storage and networking systems use the Intel Atom processor S1200 family.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 11, 2012 – Intel Corporation introduced the Intel® Atom™ S1200 product family today, delivering the world’s first low-power, 64-bit server-class system-on-chip (SoC) for high-density microservers, as well as a new class of energy-efficient storage and networking systems. The energy-sipping, industrial-strength microprocessor features essential capabilities to achieve server-class reliability, manageability and cost effectiveness.

“The data center continues to evolve into unique segments and Intel continues to be a leader in these transitions,” said Diane Bryant, vice president and general manager of the Datacenter and Connected Systems Group at Intel. “We recognized several years ago the need for a new breed of high-density, energy-efficient servers and other datacenter equipment. Today, we are delivering the industry’s only 6-watt1 SoC that has key datacenter features, continuing our commitment to help lead these segments.”

Intel’s Next Generation of Microservers: The Real Thing

As public clouds continue to grow, the opportunity to transform companies providing dedicated hosting, content delivery or front-end Web servers are also growing. High density servers based on low-power processors are able to deliver the desired performance while at the same time significantly reduce the energy consumption – one of the biggest cost drivers in the data center. However, before deploying new equipment in data centers, companies look for several critical features.

The Intel Atom processor S1200 product family is the first low-power SoC delivering required data center features that ensure server-class levels of reliability and manageability while also enabling significant savings in overall costs. The SoC includes two physical cores and a total of four threads enabled with Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology2 (Intel® HT),. The SoC also includes 64-bit support, a memory controller supporting up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, Intel® Virtualization Technologies (Intel® VT), eight lanes of PCI Express 2.0, Error-Correcting Code (ECC) support for higher reliability, and other I/O interfaces integrated from Intel chipsets. The new product family will consist of three processors with frequency ranging from 1.6GHz to 2.0GHz.

The Intel Atom S1200 product family is also compatible with the x86 software that is commonly used in data centers today. This enables easy integration of the new low-powered equipment and avoids additional investments in porting and maintaining new software stacks.

New Milestones in Power Efficiency

Intel continues to drive power consumption down in its products, enabling systems to be as energy efficient as possible. Each year since the 2006 introduction of low-power Intel® Xeon® processors, Intel has delivered a new generation of low-power processors that have decreased the thermal design power (TDP) from 40 watts in 2006 to 17 watts this year due to Intel’s advanced 22-nanometer (nm) process technology. The Intel Atom processor S1200 product family is the first low-power SoC with server-class features offering as low as 6 watts1 of TDP.

Broad Industry Support

Today, more than 20 low-power designs including microservers, storage and networking systems use the Intel Atom processor S1200 processor family from companies including Accusys*, CETC*, Dell*, HP*, Huawei*, Inspur*, Microsan*, Qsan*, Quanta*, Supermicro* and Wiwynn*.

“Organizations supporting hyperscale workloads need powerful servers to maximize efficiency and realize radical space, cost and energy savings,” said Paul Santeler, vice president and general manager, Hyperscale Business Unit, Industry-standard Servers and Software at HP. “HP servers power many of those organizations, and the Intel Atom processor S1200 will be instrumental as we develop the next wave of application-defined computing to dramatically reduce cost and energy use for our customers.”

An Even Brighter Future

Intel is working on the next generation of Intel Atom processors for extreme energy efficiency codenamed “Avoton.” Available in 2013, Avoton will further extend Intel’s SoC capabilities and use the company’s leading 3-D Tri-gate 22 nm transistors, delivering world-class power consumption and performance levels.

For customers interested in low-voltage Intel® Xeon® processor models for low-power servers, storage and networking, Intel will introduce the new Intel Xeon processor E3 v3 product family based on the “Haswell” microarchitecture next year. These new processors will take advantage of new energy-saving features in Haswell and provide balanced performance-per-watt, giving customers even more options.

Pricing and Availability

The Intel Atom processor S1200 is shipping today to customers with recommended customer price starting at $54 in quantities of 1,000 units.

Look for these low-power chips to start showing up in low-power server units soon.

SkyDrive Coming to XBOX For Gold Members

The SkyDrive team announced today that they are bringing an app to the XBOX for XBOX Gold members, allowing you to see videos and photos stored on the service via the XBOX.  Read on for details.

SkyDrive_small2

The SkyDrive team announced today that they are bringing an app to the XBOX for XBOX Gold members, allowing you to see videos and photos stored on the service via the XBOX.  The app is not yet available on the XBOX Marketplace, but it should be available after 1000 hours Pacific time.  Here is the announcement:

The entirely new SkyDrive experience for Xbox 360 spotlights your photos and videos. The app connects the cloud to your Xbox and TV: every photo, video, movie, and other file you put in SkyDrive from Windows or the web will be available on your Xbox-connected TV. Your Windows Phone is also now connected to Xbox and every photo you snap can be available on your TV automatically.

When we thought about all of the possibilities of introducing SkyDrive to the Xbox 360 environment, there were lots of features we could have tied together but we wanted to focus on the scenarios that people have told us they would find most valuable. So in building a SkyDrive experience for the living room, we’ve spent our time on making these three primary scenarios feel great:

  1. Shared photos & videos. Share a meaningful event with your friends or family by viewing photos & videos on your TV, or view photos & videos others have shared with you through SkyDrive. Imagine being able to view cherished photos and videos shared by friends and family —like a musical performance, a kid’s birthday, or baby’s first steps—on your TV.
  2. Snap and see. For Windows Phone users, snap a picture and see it appear almost immediately in your camera roll on the big screen. This feels like magic! For example, you could take a quick snapshot of your child making a funny face, fire up the SkyDrive app on your Xbox, and view it right away on your 50” screen. Just make sure you’re using the same Microsoft account sign-in for both Xbox LIVE and your Windows Phone.
  3. Party slide show. Plan a great slide show to play in the background of a dinner party. For example, you could start a slide show of a recent trip for friends, or have holiday-themed photos and videos playing during a holiday party.

Plus, the SkyDrive app for Xbox supports Kinect voice controls and gestures as well as remote and controller input. Yes, this means you can view a slide show of your SkyDrive photos just by talking to your Xbox… which is very, very cool. (Kinect voice controls are not available in all languages.)

Get started now

Here’s how to get up and running with the SkyDrive app on your Xbox:

  1. Turn on your TV and your Xbox.
  2. Go to Apps, and then select Browse Apps.
  3. In the Social category, select SkyDrive.

We hope you love this app as much as we do, and enjoy using it the next time you have friends or family over. As always, we’re excited to see how you use it, and we’re looking ahead to bringing you more SkyDrive coolness in the future.

They also posted this video to YouTube:

If you have an XBOX Gold membership and use SkyDrive, go ahead and check this one out.  It looks very cool to me!  Oh, Microsoft, how about a Skype client for XBOX Kinect?

I have a QNAP TS-419 P II NAS unit connected via ethernet to my home network.  The QNAP is running TurboNAS 3.7 and is using 8TB of drives in a RAID5 configuration.  I also have a LaCie 5big Office + NASs unit, running Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials, and this unit has a 10TB RAID5 implemented.

Configuration on the LaCie 5big Office +: iSCSI Target

Connect to the 5big Office + via Remote Desktop Connection and click on the Start button. Choose Administrative Tools and iSCSI Initiator.

Click Yes to enable iSCSI Initiator to load on startup.

The iSCSI Initiator box pops up where you configure the connection. Enter the IP address for the iSCSI target, here the QNAP NAS. Click on Quick Connect. It populates the usable targets. In this example, we’re going to use the LUN with 19002 in the name. Highlight it and click Connect.

Make sure that the connection is listed in Favorites here to enable automatic connections when the LaCie restarts. Click OK.

LaCie to NAS Backup: Part One: QNAP Configuration

In this article, I show you how to set up a QNAP NAS unit to handle the ISCI target function for backing up a LaCie 5Big Office+.  Read on for details.

5big_Office _two-views

In this article, I show you how to set up a QNAP NAS unit to handle the ISCI target function for backing up a LaCie 5Big Office+.  We’ll set up the QNAP NAS to be he ISCSI target and then show you how to configure the LaCie in the next article.

The LaCie 5big Office + runs Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials, so many Server 2008 R2 technologies are available. In this case, we’ll leverage the ISCSI Initiator technology to establish a link to a QNAP NAS running TurboNAS 3.7 and configure the LaCie to back up to the QNAP.

This process is very similar to the one that I followed when I brought you my two-part ISCSI series a few weeks back, but instead of connecting a virtualized Server 2012 Essentials box, we’ll connect the LaCi 5big Office +. As a refresher, here are my prior two articles:

ISCSI Setup Series Part One: QNAP TurboNAS 3.7 Configuration

ISCSI Setup Series Part Two: Server 2012 Essentials Configuration

Most of the QNAP configuration will be unchanged, but I’ll step through the process for you. Please note that since this is in a test lab environment, I will skip the authentication steps throughout. This of course is not a best practice for you to emulate in a production environment. Ready? Let’s go!

Configuration of the QNAP

We need to do some work to configure the QNAP to act as an ISCSI target.  The steps are activating ISCSI, creating the target, and setting up the server application to use the target.  First, log into the administrative panel of the QNAP.

Click on Disk Management and then ISCSI. Select Enable iSCSI Target Service. Click Apply.

Click OK as we’ll take care of that setting in a later step.

Click Target Management, OK to start the wizard. Select iSCSI Target with a mapped LUN. Click Next.
