Is ‘Redguard’ the next ‘Skyrim’ DLC

0

The next DLC expansion for Skyrim could be titled ‘Redguard’, it has  been rumored.

Zenimax, the publisher that owns Bethesda Softworks,  filed a trademark for the title Redguard back in March 2011.

Skyrim-DLC-Dragonborn-Teaser-570x320.jpg

The trademark is making news now because it will expire in February 2013, if  Zenimax does not declare a use for the title. With an impending expiration,  rumours began circling that it will be announced as the title for Skyrim‘s next expansion.

However, Zenimax also has the option to  file for another trademark extension. The firm has already done so twice since  the trademark was originally filed, most recently in August  2012.

Redguard is one of the races in the Elder Scrolls series which come from Hammerfell, one of the nations bordering Skyrim.

With the  ‘Dragonborn’ expansion taking players into the bordering nation of Morrowind, it  would make sense for the next expansion to take place in one of the other  nations on Skyrim’s borders.

Of particular note is the city of Dragonstar  in Hammerfell which, according to Elder Scrolls lore, has been a site  of conflict between the nations of Skyrim and Hammerfell.

The trademark  is not the first time the series would use ‘Redguard’ in its title. In 1998 a  third-person spin-off of the series was released titled The Elder Scrolls  Adventures: Redguard.

Skyrim‘s ‘Dragonborn’ DLC released  last month on Xbox 360, and will be available later in 2013 on PS3 and PC.

Preview of Aliens: Colonial Marines from Gearbox Software and SEGA

We recently had the opportunity to preview parts of the new SEGA game Aliens: Colonial Marines – lets rock!

27518ACM_Preview_Online_03

Aliens: Colonial Marines begins with an ostensibly abandoned ship, the U.S.S. Sulaco, recovered in orbit around LV-426. Players lead a group of highly trained United States Colonial Marines as they board the deserted craft to uncover the fate of the crew. They will have to fight to survive unspeakable horrors and their own anxieties as they chase down the truth behind a galaxy-spanning deception that places humanity at the mercy of the most murderous and deadly species in the universe.

The location for the preview was in London and had been transformed into Hadley’s Hope on LV-426. There were even facehuggers laying around!

photo 1

During the day we played three separate elements of the new game and we shall talk about each in turn.

Campaign

This is the single player story mode and has you playing as one of the Colonial Marines investigating the planet and coming under attack by the Xenos (think Aliens the film when they first get on the planet).

The campaign is a fairly standard first-person shooter mode where you explore various areas, perform tasks (such as moving sentry guns) and oh yeah, killing as many Xenos as you can in order to survive!

There are times when areas you go into are really dark and it’s difficult to see what’s going on. You can hear the constant beeping on the tracker and you know that something is out there, and that it’s coming for you.

We only got to play a single level of the game, but I certainly wanted to play more.

27516ACM_Preview_Online_01

Escape

Escape is a multiplayer mode where your team can either play as the Marines attempting to escape or as the Xenos trying to stop them.

Escape is a lot of fun whether you are playing on either side. When you are killed, you remain dead, and the winning team is the one that survives, even if you only have one man, or Xeno left.

Because when you die you stay dead you play slightly differently – or at least I did. I found that I didn’t go charging into an area guns blazing, or acid spitting, until I was sure I could survive.

I look forward to playing this mode again when the game is released.

Extermination

This mode is another multiplayer mode. Each game lasts ten minutes, encompassing two 5 minute sections. For the first 5 minutes your team are the Marines trying to kill all the Xenos, and the second 5 minutes sees you playing the Xenos trying to kill the Marines.

I found it great fun playing as the Marines, and you can even, if you are lucky, find the SMART gun – then all you have to do is sit back, wait for the gun to automatically lock on to any Xeno and just squeeze the trigger.

However playing as the Xenos is not as much fun. In fact it was really hard and my team kept getting wiped out over and over again. This wasn’t that our team was bad, it was just that the Marines could pick us off from great distances (and it was the same when the other team played as the Xenos).

During the game if you die you respawn, so at least you can keep trying.

Gearbox are going to have to do something to make this mode more interesting for the team playing the Xenos or I can see people skipping it.

27517ACM_Preview_Online_02

I really enjoyed playing the campaign level and also the Escape mode, but not so much Extermination, so I really hope that changes.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is one of those games that has been talked about for years and is finally coming out.

It’s a pity we didn’t get to play more, we were certainly limited to what we were allowed to play, so I hope the rest of the game lives up to the hype and promise.

For now though I am looking forward to playing some more. For fans of the film this is going to be a great opportunity to explore areas that were only touched on, and Gearbox have certainly done their research. The game really does look and feel like Aliens.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is developed by Gearbox Software and will be published by SEGA, and is due for release on the 12th February for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and Wii U.

Elite: Dangerous Kickstarter target reached with time to spare

0

With only 39 hours to go the Kickstarter for Elite: Dangerous has hit its ÂŁÂŁ1,250,000 towards target and there is still time to spare.

elite-dangerous_thumb3_thumb

“Elite: Dangerous” is the latest instalment of a long series of epic space games, starting with “Elite” – one of the most successful games of the 1980s.

Fight, trade, hunt your way across a giant galaxy of billions of star systems, starting with a basic starship and a few credits. You can make money from trading goods between the many star systems, by destroying pirate ships (and collecting bounty), or even by attacking traders and collecting their cargo (which in turn will get a bounty on your head!). There will be missions too, and exploration. Most people will do some combination of these things. Upgrade your ship and specialise in one activity – have a trader with a huge cargo bay, or use the space for weapons and manoeuvrability.

Real Freedom – Go where you like, be what you like – pirate, bounty hunter, trader, assassin, or some mix of all of these.

Trade – Buy low, cross dangerous space lanes, evade or destroy pirates en route, then sell high, if you make the journey!

Fight – Take on the pirates or be one yourself

Progress – Get your pilot rating all the way from “Harmless” to “Elite”

Explore – Head out to the far reaches of space and discover amazing sights

And the best part – you can do all this online with your friends, or other “Elite” pilots like yourself, or even alone. The choice is yours…

The Walking Dead video game trailer wasn’t official

0

Yesterday we told you about a trailer for Activision’s forthcoming The Walking Dead video game. Well it turns out it wasn’t official!

Walking-Dead-Video-Game_thumb1_thumb

The trailer was put together by fans and the YouTube Channel isn’t an official channel either.

In the game, players assume the role of the mysterious, crossbow-wielding survivor Daryl Dixon. This first-person survival title takes place within the universe of “The Walking Dead” and before the events of the AMC show, following Daryl and his brother Merle on a gruesome journey to reach the supposed safety of Atlanta as the world around them ends. Reedus and Rooker will bring life to their characters’ desperate, unforgiving struggle against limited resources, the nightmarish walkers and, perhaps, their fellow survivors…

The Walking Dead video gameis scheduled for release in 2013 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 PC, and is currently rated “RP” (Rating Pending) by the ESRB.  For more information, visit www.TheWalkingDeadBegins.com

I am a big fan of both the comic and the TV show, and I really like what TellTale Games have done with their game so I am excited to see what Activision will bring.
