Its that time of the year again – next week sees CES back in Las Vegas, and as usual CDW will be there to cover it.
This is our 6th year at CES, and every year we see amazing new technology, also things that are far too expensive but we would love to own, and usually lots of weird and wacky things.
We will be there covering it all, so expect lots of news, previews and thoughts as the week progresses.
This is the first CES in 15 years that Microsoft haven’t been there – I hope that doesn’t mean the event will be less interesting, and certainly judging by the number of invites to press conference and parties that shouldn’t be the case.
So to make sure you get all your CES 2013 coverage, make sure you keep coming back to CDW, subscribe to our RSS feed, follow us on Twitter, check out our YouTube channel or subscribe to our newsletter – the choice is yours.
And if there is something you want to us to look at give us a shout and we will do our best to cover it.
Let the madness begin!
CyberLink today released an update for PowerDirector 11 adding support for the latest GoPro HD HERO3 Black Edition camera; the first consumer level sports-action camera with 4K video recording capability.
To ensure users are not only able to record their adventures in the highest quality, but later edit and produce them too, CyberLink has expanded the comprehensive 4K video editing capabilities in PowerDirector 11 to support the latest GoPro HD HERO3 series of cameras, delivering a truly end-to-end 4K video experience.
“Sports-action cameras are hugely popular as they allow professional and amateur athletes to easily capture their activities in high-resolution stills and high-definition 4K video,” said Alice H. Chang, CEO of CyberLink. “However, if users are to fully enjoy the benefits of 4K video, then they need editing software that can support it. CyberLink PowerDirector 11’s support for 4K video files from the GoPro HD HERO3 mean they can now easily edit, preserve and share their unique experiences.”
The new PowerDirector 11 update is now available to existing users for free via the CyberLink Update Center. New customers who are interested in end-to-end 4K video editing can also purchase the latest version of PowerDirector 11 from the CyberLink online store.

The folks over at Raspberry Pi recently announced an app store to enable users to download apps, games, media and more for the Raspberry Pi platform. Read on for details!
The folks over at Raspberry Pi recently announced an app store to enable users to download apps, games, media and more for the Raspberry Pi platform. Here is the blog post announcing the app store:
Introducing the Pi Store
We’ve been amazed by the variety of software that people have written for, or ported to, the Raspberry Pi. Today, together with our friends at IndieCity and Velocix, we’re launching the Pi Store to make it easier for developers of all ages to share their games, applications, tools and tutorials with the rest of the community. The Pi Store will, we hope, become a one-stop shop for all your Raspberry Pi needs; it’s also an easier way into the Raspberry Pi experience for total beginners, who will find everything they need to get going in one place, for free.
The store runs as an X application under Raspbian, and allows users to download content, and to upload their own content for moderation and release. At launch, we have 23 free titles in the store, ranging from utilities like LibreOffice and Asterisk to classic games like Freeciv and OpenTTD and Raspberry Pi exclusive Iridium Rising. We also have one piece of commercial content: the excellent Storm in a Teacup from Cobra Mobile.
Applications menu
We hope that the Pi Store will provide young people with a way to share their creations with a wider audience, and maybe to a make a little pocket money along the way; as well as offering commercial developers an easy way to get their software seen by the Raspberry Pi community. To start with, we’ll be encouraging the winners of our Summer Programming Contest to upload their entries to the store. Anybody can submit their own project for moderation and release. You can choose whether to make your content free or paid: the store has a tip jar mechanism, so even if you’re not charging (and not charging will get you far more downloads), you still have the opportunity to make some money from your development work if people really like it. You can submit binaries, raw Python code, images, audio or video; and soon you’ll be able to submit Scratch content too. Raspberry Pi-related media of all kinds also has a place in the Pi Store – we’re carrying the MagPi, and hope to be able to host as many of your homebrew tutorials there as possible. We’re hoping to see everything, from hobbyist content to full-blown commercial software.

Raspberry Pi Blog PostLG announced today that they will start accepting pre-orders in South Korea for their eagerly awaited 55” OLED in January with deliveries to start in February. Other regions will follow.
LG announced today that they will start accepting pre-orders in South Korea for their eagerly awaited 55” OLED in January with deliveries to start in February. Here is the announcement:
LG BEGINS ROLLOUT OF EAGERLY ANTICIPATED OLED TV
LG Ushers in New Year as First Company to Launch Sales of OLED TVSEOUL, Jan. 2, 2013 – LG Electronics (LG) announced today that it will begin accepting pre-orders for its eagerly-awaited 55-inch class (54.6-inch diagonal) WRGB OLED TV (Model 55EM9700) in South Korea this month with deliveries scheduled to begin next month.
Other markets where the revolutionary LG OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) TV will be available will be announced over the next several weeks along with their respective prices. The announcement comes just days before the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), where an early version of the TV last year was awarded “Best of Show.”
More than 1,400 LG retail stores in South Korea will begin accepting orders from consumers for KRW 11 million (approximately US $10,000) TVs starting Jan. 3 with delivery to commence the first week of February. As the first and only company to announce availability of the next-generation TV technology, LG is prepared to ramp up quickly to take the lead in the OLED segment that is expected to grow to 7.2 million units by 2016, according to DisplaySearch.
“We are extremely pleased to be able to make this announcement at the start of the new year because we believe that OLED will usher in a whole new era of home entertainment,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “Not since color TV was first introduced 60 years ago has there been a more transformational moment. When high definition TV was first introduced 15 years ago, the public’s reaction was ‘wow!’ but when customers see our razor-thin OLED TV for the first time, they’re left speechless. That’s a clear indicator as any that OLED TV is much more than just an incremental improvement to current television technology.”
Only 4 millimeters (0.16 inches) thin and weighing less than 10 kilograms (22 pounds), LG’s OLED TVs produce astoundingly vivid and realistic pictures thanks to its superior WRGB technology. LG’s unique Four-Color Pixel system features a white sub-pixel, which works in conjunction with the conventional red, blue, green setup to create the perfect color output. LG’s exclusive Color Refiner delivers even greater tonal enhancement, resulting in images that are more vibrant and natural than anything seen before. The 55-inch OLED TV also offers an infinite contrast ratio, which maintains optimal contrast levels regardless of ambient brightness or viewing angle.
Even before its launch, LG’s OLED TV was turning heads all over the world. In addition to being named Best of Show at CES 2012, the influential Industrial Designers Society of America recognized the TV with a coveted IDEA Award. Meanwhile, LG received the European Display Achievement 2012-2013 Award from the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA). And to cap it off, LG’s OLED received Korea’s Good Design President Award in October.
At $10,000 per unit, this is definitely an expensive option, but it looks fantastic and at only 4mm thick and 22 pounds, this is a great product.

This is cheaper than the Sony Google TV and has the benefit of running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as opposed to the special Honeycomb build used in Google TV. This is an interesting concept and I hope to stop by and see this in action when I am at CES next week.

Canonical has officially unveiled its design for an Ubuntu Phone operating system.
When you turn on the Ubuntu phone you’ll see something strikingly different. You’ll see a beautiful reflection of yourself, a visualization of your life, crafted by artist, ever changing, totally personal, and completely unique, just like you. As you use the phone the image will evolve. It’s like your signature and it’s stunning. It’s not a lock screen, it’s not a barrier, it’s a welcome screen. We don’t need a lock screen because Ubuntu is the first phone that uses every edge of the screen to take you directly to what you need.
Check out the video demonstration of the new mobile phone OS below… It starts around the 6:30 mark. Ubuntu for phones will be showcased at CES on 8-11th January 2013.
