CES 2013 : Blue Microphones announces Nessie

Last night at CES Blue Microphones announced Nessie, the solution for fearless recording that instantly delivers studio-enhanced sound for desktop recording of vocals, instruments, voiceovers and more. And we also got to take a closer look at her.

CDW - Blue Microphones Nessie - 1

Nessie adapts in real time, applying professional studio processing, combined with a built-in pop filter and internal shockmount to produce expertly finished sound, without the need for additional mixing or editing.

CDW - Blue Microphones Nessie - 2 CDW - Blue Microphones Nessie - 3

Nessie’s key features and internal processing are specifically designed to combat the most common pitfalls of recording. The built-in, studio-grade pop filter and shockmount reduce harsh plosives and disruptive rumbling and vibrations, while the adaptive processing, including EQ, de-esser and level control, automatically smoothes and refines your audio in real time. Nessie takes the audio guesswork out of great recording.

Nessie employs a single custom-tuned condenser capsule with a cardioid pattern. Nessie’s three flexible recording modes are optimized for richer vocals, more detailed instruments or an option for raw audio for manual post-production editing. Nessie features a zero-latency headphone output for direct monitoring, which is critical for eliminating distracting delay, while headphone volume and instant mute are located directly on the microphone. For optimal positioning, Nessie’s head adjusts with serpentine flexibility. Nessie is plug-and-play compatible via USB with both PC and Mac with driverless installation. For mobile recording, connect to iPad using Apple’s camera adapters (30-pin to USB or Lighting to USB), sold separately.

1

Valve and Xi3 are partnering to  release a Steam-based gaming device codenamed ‘Piston’.

The heavily  rumoured ‘Steam Box’, which is on display at both the Valve and Xi3 booths at  this week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, is designed specifically to  support Steam and its Big Picture mode.

Steam Box xi3 prototype

Xi3 founder Jason A. Sullivan said: “Today marks the beginning of a new era for  Xi3. This new development stage product will allow users to take full advantage  of their large high-definition TV displays for an amazing computer game  experience.

“As a result, this new system could provide access to  thousands of gaming titles through an integrated system that exceeds the  capabilities of leading game consoles, but can fit in the palm of your  hand.”

The pint-sized system started life as an unsuccessful Kickstarter  project last year, but has since gained the backing of Valve.

Little else is known about the device, but is said to contain 1TB of internal storage and  offer modular component updates, including the option to upgrade the CPU and  RAM, according to Polygon.

Valve co-founder Gabe  Newell previously revealed that the company is working on living room-based  hardware, but did not go into specifics.

Valve took its first step  towards optimising Steam for the living room with the release  of the Big Picture mode update, optimising the service for TV screens.

Today’s announcement that Assassin’s Creed 3 is getting some more multiplayer DLC in the form of the ‘Battle Hardened’ pack has reminded me that I’m yet to play the multiplayer portion of the game. Then again I’ve hardly played the single player either, was makes my look at my pile of shame in despair.

PlayStation 2 Discontinued by Sony

The PlayStation 2 has been officially discontinued by Sony.

The electronics giant  confirmed it is no longer making the console worldwide following reports  from Japan that production had stopped in the company’s native territory,  according to The Guardian

PS2-Versions

Units already in storage and shops will be the last new PS2 consoles in  existence, but a select few developers will continue to make software for the  DVD-based system.

The move has fuelled rumours that the platform holder  is shifting its manufacturing resources towards the development of the  PlayStation 4, which is said  to be in the works under the codename of Thebes.

Sony’s PS2 is  credited as being the bestselling console of all time, and even outsold the  PlayStation 3 when it first arrived on the market. It also pioneered the use of  the DVD storage medium in the gaming sector.

The PS2 debuted in Japan in  2000 and moved more than 150 million units during its lifecycle, making it the  bestselling home console of all time.

NVIDIA officially announces the TEGRA 4

0

Last night at their press conference in Las Vegas, NVIDIA finally officially announced “the worst kept secret” – their TEGRA 4 chip.

tegra4-processor

Tegra 4 offers exceptional graphics processing, with lightning-fast web browsing, stunning visuals and new camera capabilities through computational photography.

Previously codenamed “Wayne,” Tegra 4 features 72 custom NVIDIA GeForce GPU cores – or six times the GPU horsepower of Tegra 3 – which deliver more realistic gaming experiences and higher resolution displays. It includes the first quad-core application of ARM’s most advanced CPU core, the Cortex-A15, which delivers 2.6x faster web browsing and breakthrough performance for apps.

Computational Photography Capability

Among the Tegra 4 processor’s breakthroughs is its Computational Photography Architecture, which automatically delivers high dynamic range (HDR) photos and video by fusing together the processing power of the GPU, CPU and the camera’s image-signal processor.

Its HDR capability captures images, including those taken with a flash, the way they are seen by the human eye – with detail in both bright and dark areas.

Unprecedented Power Efficiency

Designed for maximum energy efficiency, Tegra 4 includes a second-generation battery saver core for low power during standard use, and PRISM 2 Display technology to reduce backlight power while delivering superior visuals.

Tegra 4 consumes up to 45 percent less power than its predecessor, Tegra 3, in common use cases. And it enables up to 14 hours of HD video playback on phones.

Tegra 4 Key Features

· GeForce GPU with 72 custom cores

· Quad-core ARM Cortex-A15 CPU, plus a 2nd Generation Battery Saver Core

· Computational Photography Architecture

· LTE capability with optional Icera i500 chipset

· 4K ultra-high-def video support

Having seen some live demos of TEGRA 4 running last night I have to say I am impressed.

You can learn more about TEGRA 4 here

NVIDIA announces Project SHIELD portable gaming device

At their press conference last night here in Las Vegas, NVIDIA announced Project SHIELD, a gaming portable for open platforms, designed for gamers who yearn to play when, where and how they want.

8356353517_0e2793641d

Created with the philosophy that gaming should be open and flexible, Project SHIELD flawlessly plays both Android and PC titles. As a pure Android device, it gives access to any game on Google Play. And as a wireless receiver and controller, it can stream games from a PC powered by NVIDIA GeForce GTX GPUs, accessing titles on its STEAM game library from anywhere in the home.

“Project SHIELD was created by NVIDIA engineers who love to game and imagined a new way to play,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, co-founder and chief executive officer at NVIDIA. “We were inspired by a vision that the rise of mobile and cloud technologies will free us from our boxes, letting us game anywhere, on any screen. We imagined a device that would do for games what the iPod and Kindle have done for music and books, letting us play in a cool new way. We hope other gamers love SHIELD as much as we do.”

Project SHIELD combines the advanced processing power of NVIDIA Tegra 4, breakthrough game-speed Wi-Fi technology and stunning HD video and audio built into a console-grade controller. It can be used to play on its own integrated screen or on a big screen, and on the couch or on the go.

8356353659_7eee8d0dea 8356353909_fd50e3cbd8

Tegra 4 at Its Heart
At the core of Project SHIELD is the world’s fastest mobile processor, the new NVIDIA Tegra 4, which delivers enormous power from its custom 72-core GeForce GPU and the first quad-core application of ARM’s most advanced CPU core, the Cortex-A15. These, combined with its battery-saver core and energy-saving PRISM 2 technology, deliver hours of gameplay on a single charge.

Windows and Android Games
Windows and Android are the world’s most successful computing platforms, with massive ecosystems of system and software developers. While not specifically designed for gaming, both open platforms have drawn gamers by the millions. Project SHIELD is designed to allow them to enjoy Android and Windows games in a new, exciting way.

Project SHIELD can instantly download Android games, including Android-optimized titles available on NVIDIA’s TegraZone game store, which has already delivered more than 6 million downloads to gamers. It can also be used as a wireless game receiver to a nearby PC equipped with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 GPU or higher.

Console-Grade Controller
Project SHIELD’s ergonomic controller was built for the gamer who wants ultimate control and precision.

8356354205_57e117dc93 8357416946_1d6dd1d086

Retinal Gaming Display
Brilliant gameplay and video are provided by Project SHIELD’s integrated 5-inch, 1280×720 HD retinal multitouch display, with 294 dpi. Plus, Tegra 4 with Direct Touch technology gives it touch responsiveness that is a more consistent, accurate and smooth-flowing touch input experience than a standard touch device.

Tuned Port, Bass Reflex Portable Speaker System
Deep, rich audio is critical for a great gaming experience. And Project SHIELD provides fidelity and dynamic range never before available on a portable device, through its custom, bass reflex, tuned port audio system — with twice the low-frequency output of high-end laptops.

Project SHIELD can also access Android apps such as Hulu, Netflix and Slacker Radio, so users can enjoy their movies and music anywhere without expensive, clumsy wired or wireless speakers.

More information is available at shield.nvidia.com.

When I first saw the short video NVIDIA played I thought “oh, its a controller with a screen on it” and it really didn’t get too excited, that was until they showed the PC streaming part and I decided that I had to have one!

ChargeSensor
All mobile devices have specific charging profiles that dictate how much, and how quickly, they can charge. Most chargers are designed with a one-size-fits-all approach which typically does not support the requirements of each individual device. Griffin’s new ChargeSensor technology senses the requirements of any device plugged into it, providing optimal charging for all USB-chargeable devices. Griffin introduces two new power solutions for Apple, Samsung, Android and Kindle devices, complete with Charge Sensor technology: PowerBlock Universal and PowerJolt Universal.

● PowerBlock Universal with ChargeSensor features a low profile design for plugging into power strips and plugs. Plugged into any AC power source from 100 to 240 volts, PowerBlock converts it to safe, efficient 10 watt charging for smartphones, tablets, and e-readers.

● PowerJolt Universal with ChargeSensor sports a low profile plug for the car’s 12 volt accessory outlet and a powerful 10 watt charging circuit to charge mobile devices quickly and safely. An LED power indicator glows to signal that the device is ready to charge, and its internal SmartFuse protects against power fluctuations as it charges with a built-in circuit breaker, and no fuses to replace.

Griffin’s new ChargeSensor PowerBlock, $29.99, and PowerJolt, $24.99, will be available Spring 2013
