Hands-on preview of The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot from Ubisoft

MightyQuest_Hi-res_Keyart_01_thumb[3]

The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot is a brand new Free-to-Play IP from Ubisoft Montreal for the PC that thrusts you in an outrageous medieval fantasy world called Opulencia where wealth, status and showboating are the name of the game!

As a newcomer to Opulencia, you will hack n slash your way through hundreds of castles designed by the ingenious minds of your fellow players! Don’t forget to show them who’s boss by constructing deadly keep of your very own – in this kingdom, size really does matter!

You are probably sitting reading this thinking “that’s a strange title for a game” – well you would be right, but equally it pretty much describes the game perfectly! For the rest of this article I am going to refer to the game as TMQFEL as it is a lot easier to type!

MQEL_grab_UK

TMQFEL is probably best described as a cross between Diablo and Dungeon Keeper, with rather a lot of humour thrown in for good measure.

You can play as one of four characters – at the moment only three of those characters have been announced – Sir Painhammer, Blackeye Bowgart and The Earl of Evilosity, with the four character, a female, being announced at a later time. For the preview we had the chance, or should that be the honour of playing as Sir Painhammer, a Knight who is rather sure of himself.

Boiling the game down to its basics, there are two main elements – attack and defend. For attack, you raid a castle, hack n slash (as they like to remind you) through all the beasties and traps and try to get to the epic loot before the time runs out. And even if you get there in time there is no guarantee you will get the loot as the developers have added an fairness element to the game – if the castle has recently been looted it cannot be looted again for a set period of time, that way if you are the unfortunate owner of said castle you won’t loose all your loot quickly.

MQEL_groomingroom_trap_UK

And that brings us nicely onto defending. You have your own castle where you store all your epic loot and you don’t really want someone else raiding it and stealing it now, do you? Of course not, so you can create rooms in your castle and fill them with beasties and traps of your own which should stop, you hope, any would-be attacker. Again, the developer has made it so that you can’t just put down row after row of beasties and traps – only a certain number can go in a room, otherwise it just wouldn’t be fair, would it?

As you work you way through castle after castle you get XP which can be used to level up your character. As you get stronger you can attack other more powerful castles, where the rewards will be far greater.

And talking of castles, there are castles created by the developer as well as castles belonging to other players, which makes for a rather interesting game.

MQEL_headshot_UK

One thing you can’t do is concentrate on just attack or just defend, you have to do both, although you are likely to be spending the majority of your time attacking, especially if you have fortified your castle well.

One really nice feature is that you can playback any attack on your castle and watch how badly, or how well the attacker did. This gives you the opportunity to see where you defences could be enhanced, and even better you have the option to seek revenge on the attacker, which is always fun!

Gameplay consists of pointing where you want to go and what you want to attack and clicking on things – all very simple and something that you can easily get the hang off if you are not used to playing games like Diablo or StarCraft. The graphics are very good and there are lots of beasties and traps with their own unique look and style.

MQEL_Knight_club_UK

The build of the game we got to play was alpha, although it was pretty slick and we didn’t experience any issues. Ubisoft tell us that there will be a closed beta coming up later in the year before the game gets a final release. Personally I can’t wait as it was a lot of fun, when you play it just don’t forget to defend as well as attack, or like me you will soon find yourself in a little bit of trouble.

You can also check out our exclusive interview with Matt Zagurak who is the writer of TMQFEL here.

At a recently hands-on event I got to play the game for a few hours, and I can honestly say it’s both fun and really addictive!

After the playtime I had the opportunity to sit down with Matt Zagurak, who is the writer for TMQFEL (its a lot shorter than typing in the whole name over and over again, believe me).

We talked about the game, the humour, his inspirations and a whole lot more, oh, and there’s a little bit of gameplay footage in there too.

So over to Matt:

TMQFEL will be available later in the year, so watch this space as I can’t wait to play more.

Watch out for our hands-on preview shortly.

FIFA 14 Exclusive First Look and Interview with Sebastian Enrique

FIFA14_SP_low_shot_WM_UPDATE

This week EA announced FIFA 14 – the latest in a long line of FIFA games. We were at the first look event and had the opportunity to talk with Sebastian Enrique about some of the new features.

FIFA14_NG_SP_pure_shot_WM

Each year EA release a new version of FIFA, and each year they manage to make the game significantly better. When FIFA 13 was released last year, it sold 4.4 million copies in its first week alone. And by the start of March 2013, 2.1 billion (yes, billion) matches had been played. That is some statistic!

So just what will EA be doing with FIFA 14 to surpass what it did with FIFA 13? Well, they are tapping into what they call “The Emotion of Scoring Great Goals”.

Some of the many new features of FIFA 14 include:

· Pure Shot— Shooting has been transformed. Players have the intelligence to adjust their stride and approach angle to find the best position for hitting the back of the net. Well-hit balls feel satisfying and goals are rewarding. As well as quality strikes, players can now shoot while off balance or rushed.

· Real Ball Physics— Strike the ball with more force and finesse. Realistic ball physics now determines the trajectories of balls in game, enabling players to strike the ball with force from distance, drill low rising shots with accuracy, and blast dipping or swerving shots, just like real footballers.

FIFA14_FR_protect_the_ball_WM

· Protect The Ball— Dominate midfield and dictate the tempo of a match. Fend-off and block defenders from the ball while dribbling at any speed. Protect the ball from opponents to control play through midfield and dictate the pace of the match. Plus, out-muscle opponents for position before receiving the ball, then turn defenders to carve out opportunities.

· Career Mode— Search for talent year-round with the new Global Scouting Network that brings the world of professional scouting to life. Develop and refine your own scouting network. Evaluate footballers to uncover the attributes of players who could bolster your squad during the transfer windows. A new hub delivers easy navigation, fewer interruptions and live scouting reports.

FIFA14_CareerMode_Central_GlobalScoutingNetwork_Tile_active_WM

Sebastian Enrique is one of the producers for FIFA 14. He has worked on numerous versions of FIFA, and as you will hear in the interview, he eats, sleeps and breathes FIFA and football! We talk about some of the new features and how popular FIFA is, so over to Sebastian:

It’s easy to see from the first look we were given that EA are serious about making FIFA 14 even better than FIFA 13, and that “The Emotion of Scoring Great Goals” is already there. It will be interesting to see just what else they have in store for us.

Additional features will be revealed in the months leading to the game’s retail launch in late 2013. At the moment EA have only announced FIFA 14 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, but expect it to appear on other platforms.

Curiosity App Adds Cube Re-Grow Option

0

The Curiosity app has introduced a feature to re-grow the cube. Peter Molyneux of 22 Cans has announced the new option for players to pay to add or remove cubelets in the game.

curoisity

The experiment invites users to chip away at the block to uncover the “truly amazing” and “absolutely unique” secret within.

“We don’t know quite what will happen in this war of attrition,” said 22 Cans in a statement.

Curiosity may very well rapidly degrade to reveal its innermost secret or maybe the effects of automatically removing cubelets will be neutralised by players keen to keep Curiosity going.”

The added and removed cubes will be applied to the next layer to be revealed.

According to Eurogamer, users have so far paid to remove 13,780,000 cubelets and add another 4,680,000, decreasing the next layer by 9.1 million in total.

Gary Barlow performs at the Samsung GALAXY S4 at the World Tour in London

This week in London Samsung held the first night of their Samsung GALAXY S4 World Tour, and we were there, along with Gary Barlow who performed a number of his hit songs.

Gary has been a Samsung Brand Ambassador for a while and it was a great surprise when we were told he would be performing for us after the Galaxy S4 presentation. Pretty much everyone at the event packed themselves right into the stage and everyone was singing along (unfortunately some not as well as others – as you may hear on the videos below).

Here are a selection of photos from the night:

This week in London Samsung held the first night of their Samsung GALAXY S4 World Tour, and we were there to get a closer look at the previously announced new smartphone.

With a 1.6GHz octa-core processor, in addition there’s 2GB of DDR3 RAM, the first Full HD Super AMOLED display we’ve come across, measuring in at 5-inches and front and rear HD cameras at 2 and 13-megapixels respectively. The Galaxy S4 is 7.9mm thin, Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE)1080p, Full HD Super AMOLED screen with a 441 ppi with 2 GB’s of RAM with 16, 32, or 64GB of storage (plus a microSD slot if you want to add more upto 64GB).

CDW A closer look at the Samsung Galaxy S4 - 1  CDW A closer look at the Samsung Galaxy S4 - 2

The beauty of the phone is the highly crafted design encompassing a larger screen size and battery, minimized bezel; all housed in a light (130g) and slim (7.9mm) shape. The Samsung GALAXY S 4 is slimmer yet stronger, with less to hold yet more to see.

As usual Samsung have done an amazing job with the hardware, and the addition of various apps specific to Samsung and the S4 will make it a very desirable device.
