Review: As Far As The Eye

Base-building games are phenomenal. The attention to detail and methodical nature entice a niche audience. However, I’m often put off by the steep learning curve and the time-consuming ways. As such, when I was offered As Far As The Eye, I was a little hesitant. Its strange concept and all-consuming ideas appeared daunting. Thankfully, though, I went into this with an open mind and was instantly rewarded as a consequence.

Developed by Goblinz Studio and published by Klabater, this is a nomadic base-building game. What’s more, in a cruel twist, you must work to a timer and complete your goals as you move node to node and attempt to survive. Accordingly, this strange game of chess is methodical and challenging, but it can also be enjoyed casually. Therefore, it alleviates many of my genre-specific concerns.

Local caravans can help you progress.
Work with the locals to get extra resources.

As Far As The Eye overwhelmed me.

At first glance, As Far As The Eye is overwhelming and confusing. With weird names for each character and strange mechanics, I was lost. Yet, the developers have countered this steep learning curve with an excellent tutorial-like campaign. Accordingly, every key moment and concept is clearly explained to overcome each uncertain moment.

The aim of As Far As The Eye is remarkably simple! The tribe of pupils moves from node to node following a nomadic way of life. In each area, they hunt for resources and gather goods to further their journey. Moreover, they will work together to gather food, build structures, and explore weird locations. Furthermore, they’ll interact with friendly tribes, make decisions, and work towards their goal of reaching “The Eye”.

This all sounds lovely, but there is a chilling sting in the tail. As the tribe and its caravan hit each node, a timer begins. Every movement or action constitutes a turn, and each spent turn moves a deadly tsunami closer to your people. If you take too long, the tidal water will hit and everyone will die!

Knowledge is your friend.

What makes As Far As The Eye particularly great is the upgrade system. Every game element can be improved to offer a range of tactical choices. Consequently, the more tasks a pupil completes, the more XP they earn. This is then rewarded by upgrading each one to a specialised role.

Alongside this, you may improve each structure to reduce the cost of resources and increase gathering rates. This idea continues in the political layer of the gameplay. The tribe council can improve the way your people work. However, each upgrade costs you precious resources. Subsequently, you must balance improvement and your workload carefully.

The upgrades were phenomenal but cruel. Why? Well, you had to make painful choices over which ones to select. Instead of improving every element, you had to focus on one approach to get you through. Consequently, you’d adjust your tactics depending on the skills of your people, the resources you must gather, and the node you landed on. As such, there was some luck and a well-considered plan needed to get you through.

Choose your path and make it to "The Eye".
Pick your path to “The Eye”.

As Far As The Eye takes detail to the next level.

With so much going on, Goblinz Studio had to be careful not to add to the confusion. Thankfully, an incredible UI with multiple submenus keeps things clear. Furthermore, well-labelled structures and a honeycomb stage design help you navigate the world.

The UI was great, however, I cherished the level of detail and the wonderful sprites. Each of the pupils can morph into different creatures, depending on the tasks they are executing. This was simple but effective, as you can identify the role each pupil is undertaking. On top of this, the clean lines and easy-to-identify resource tiles help to reduce confusion further still.

A biblical tsunami is about to ruin your day, but the audio remains calm and melodic. Consequently, the sombre and chilled vibes juxtapose the impending doom that you face. I found this choice to be strange, albeit pleasant to listen to. Alongside the odd musical decisions, there were some familiar and excellent sound effects to enjoy.

As Far As The Eye is full of difficult and game-changing decisions.
Which option will you choose?

An amazing console experience.

This genre is designed for a mouse and keyboard. Therefore, I was shocked by how great it was to play on my Xbox Series X. Every element of the controller layout works remarkably well. Furthermore, the excellent UI, responsive inputs, and wonderful tutorial sets you up perfectly. The developers must be applauded, as this is one of the best base-building experiences I’ve had as a console player.

Unsurprisingly, this oozes replay value and longevity. There are 3 game modes to choose from, cruel mechanics to overcome, and special events to experience during each playthrough. If things weren’t tough enough, there are cataclysmic moments that alter your approach. Whether it is lighting strikes, illness, damage to your buildings, or more, it puts a spanner in the works. As such, the nasty developers keep you on your toes and demand a flexible mindset.

As Far As The Eye is an incredible, albeit unusual subset of the genre.

Once you get over the initial learning curve, As Far As The Eye becomes an intuitive and intelligent title. With branching tactical choices, an amazing upgrade system, and a cruel ticking time bomb, this is an incredible, albeit an unusual subset of the genre. Moreover, the wonderful aesthetics, excellent UI, and unfair cataclysmic moments add to the brilliance. Accordingly, I loved it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you overcome every hurdle and make it to “The Eye”? Gather resources, trade with other tribes, and move before the tsunami ends your life.

How is Blackjack Evolving with Modern Technology?

0

Blackjack is one of the oldest games in existence that’s still in the mainstream, and it could be set to stay at the top of popular culture for many centuries to come. This is thanks to the way it always adapts to modern technology and continues to evolve. Nowadays, there are countless ways for people to enjoy the game, and this has helped it to build up a dedicated userbase of players who have a vast range of interests. In the future, the game could advance even more with platforms like virtual reality.

Blackjack Streaming

One of the most recent developments in the world of blackjack is live streaming. This has been incredibly well received, and now live casino is one of the most popular ways of playing. Live blackjack has boomed in recent years thanks to the way it puts players at the centre of the action across from a real world dealer. It provides the best of both worlds, allowing players to sit comfortably in their homes but feel like they’re in the casino at the same time. Playing online in this way is superior because it’s easy to consult online guides and charts to know what to do in any situation. For example, it’s crucial for players to know when to double down or split.

Along with bringing traditional versions of blackjack to players in their own homes, the rise of live streaming has also led to an influx of new offerings. Developers know that players love accessing games through this medium and are trying to give them as many options as possible. These now span way beyond the classic version of the game and come with a variety of new features. For instance, there are certain games that have special side bets on offer, and others that come with multipliers. Games like Multihand Blackjack and Super Stakes Blackjack are the best options for people interested in these additional elements.

Players can even find live blackjack games that have special themes now. These are clearly designed to replicate the success of slot games and market blackjack to a wider audience. Some examples of themed games include Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven Jackpot and Quantum Blackjack Plus. In the years ahead, it wouldn’t be surprising to see film-themed blackjack offerings, like those seen among reel spinning titles. Movies like Mad Max and A Nightmare on Elm Street have already been represented in slots, and they could soon appear as live blackjack games as this category expands.

Mobile Platforms

The mobile gaming industry blew up in the 2010s alongside the online casino sector, and the games on both platforms share a lot of similarities. Mobile gamers tend to look for pick-up-and-play style titles that don’t require much time investment. These games are also typically easy to get the hang of but also offer thrilling gameplay. Blackjack fits in this bracket, and the card game is well-loved by mobile players. These gamers have the option to log on to an online casino app and play cash games from their mobiles, but there are also other variants of the classic offering that are specifically designed for mobile players.

There are plenty of free mobile games out there that give players a chance to learn the fundamentals of blackjack without having to risk any of their own money. These include titles like Ultimate Blackjack 3D Reloaded and Blacjack21: Blackjackist. Many of the top played apps are also social games that give players a chance to chat online with likeminded people.

Along with providing ways for players to learn and practice blackjack, the mobile market has various companion apps that can assist people with their strategy when playing. It’s useful for players to be able to quickly consult probability charts to help them make decisions. There’s also the opportunity to follow blackjack experts on social media, with Twitter acting as a treasure trove for tips. YouTube has plenty of instructional videos for budding blackjack players, while Twitch also features many experts who stream their games live for people to watch and learn from.

Accessibility and Multiple Devices

It’s clear that throughout blackjack’s recent history it has gained worldwide fame thanks to adapting to a multitude of devices. It is also open to innovation, with various developers pushing it forward into the future. That suggests that the accessibility of the game is going to improve even more when new platforms come to the fore. It could be exciting times ahead, then, with virtual reality expected to be the next major mainstream platform.

According to Mark Zuckerberg, VR will be mainstream by 2030. It’s at that point that the Meta founder believes that there will be more than one billion people existing within the metaverse. If this is to come to fruition, VR will need the power of online casinos behind it to push it forward. The blackjack games available on the futuristic platform are likely to take elements of the live streaming games to the next level.

Microgaming has already created a VR Roulette offering, which puts players in a space-like environment with a robot croupier. It’s a novel idea, but the concept that was first displayed in 2015 may seem outdated now that live streaming has become such a popular platform. It would make more sense for online casino developers to combine live streaming with VR to up the immersion levels of the games that already exist. Players may be able to soon look down at their cards and reach down with their virtual hands to touch them.

There’s no doubt that blackjack has benefited greatly from technological developments throughout its history. If it wasn’t for the internet and live streaming, the game could have risked falling into obscurity. Instead, it’s bigger than ever and only set to reach more people with the next breakthroughs in technology.

The Role of Technology in Casino Operations

The Age of Electronic Excitement: Slot Machines

It all started with the humble slot machine. And let’s not forget the rise of mobile gambling, which allows us to chase that jackpot while waiting in line for coffee or riding the bus.

The Power of Data: Analytics and Personalization

With the advent of big data and advanced analytics, casinos have gained access to a treasure trove of insights about their customers. By analyzing player behavior and preferences, casinos can tailor promotions and game offerings to individual tastes, enhancing the overall gaming experience.

Data-driven insights also help casinos optimize their operations, from game placement on the casino floor to targeted marketing campaigns. In a world where the house always wins, technology has become the ultimate ace up the casino’s sleeve.

0

Honkai Impact 3rd, developed and published by miHoYo, has been a popular mobile action game for years. Now, miHoYo has released a new mobile game, Honkai Star Rail, that takes players on a journey through a world filled with Honkai beasts, ancient technologies, and high-speed trains. We’ll dive into what makes Honkai Star Rail unique and exciting, from its story and characters to its gameplay mechanics and visual design, along with the future that is held for this successful gacha game.

Trailblazer can be a guy or girl, depending on what players chose, both equally as dangerous.

Honkai Star Rail is set in the same universe as Honkai Impact 3rd—a world where humans fight against mysterious creatures known as “Honkai” (Japanese for “demon gods”). The game’s protagonist is a guy or girl named the Trailblazer who travels to escape from the ongoing war between humans and Honkai. Along the way the character meets other travelers like themself who have also taken refuge in the dangerous world that surrounds them. Together they must work together to survive the journey back home while avoiding attacks from Honkai creatures! The story of Honkai Star Rail takes place in a world where humanity has been threatened by the Honkai, a mysterious energy that corrupts and mutates all life it touches. The game follows the adventure of our main character, a guardian of the world who fights against the Honkai. Players will encounter other characters in the world of Star Rail, each with their own motivations and secrets. They also discover that the Honkai threat is much more complex than they ever imagined, as they encounter corrupted creatures that defy all logic and reason. Through their journey, our character and their companions must uncover the mysteries behind the Honkai and find a way to save their world from destruction.

Honkai Star Rail is a turn-based RPG that focuses on the story of the Honkai, a race of mechanical beings who are slowly taking over Earth. The game provides players with a large cast of characters, each with their own unique playstyle and backstory. Players can customize their characters by equipping them with new weapons and accessories, which can then be upgraded to provide additional benefits in battle. Players can also complete puzzles and minigames in between battles, keeping gameplay from becoming monotonous or repetitive. Honkai Star Rail provides a level of depth and strategy to its gameplay that makes battles feel rewarding and challenging, without being overwhelming for novice players. The inclusion of puzzles and minigames adds variety to the gameplay without distracting from its focus on storytelling, which is essential for any visual novel.

Honkai Star Rail is a combination of a visual novel and a turn-based RPG. Players take on the role of the Trailblazer, who travels on the Star Rail and engages in battles against Honkai creatures. The battles take place in a Final Fantasy style turn-based battle, where players move their characters and use their skills and abilities to defeat enemies. Each character has their own set of skills and abilities, which can be upgraded and customized as players progress through the game. In addition to battles, Honkai Star Rail also features a variety of other gameplay elements. Players can explore different areas of the Star Rail and interact with other characters, learning more about the game’s story and lore. There are also puzzle elements, where players must use their wits and skills to solve challenges and obstacles on the train. Finally, there are minigames, which offer a fun and lighthearted break from the main gameplay.

Honkai Star Rail is a visually stunning mobile game that combines the best elements of action games and visual novels to create an engaging experience. The game’s story takes place in a futuristic world where humanity has been driven underground to escape from Honkai beasts, which are monsters that attack humans at every opportunity. Players take control of a train that fights these beasts as it travels across the planet’s surface. The game features gorgeous 3D artwork and animations, with detailed character designs and lush backgrounds. The game’s use of color is particularly impressive, with vibrant hues that bring the world to life. The game also features an excellent soundtrack, with memorable themes and atmospheric music that enhances the game’s emotional impact. Honkai Star Rail is a unique and engaging mobile game that offers a thrilling adventure through a world of high-speed trains and Honkai beasts. With its compelling story, memorable characters, and engaging gameplay, Honkai Star Rail is a must-play for fans of action games and visual novels.

Honkai is surprisingly beautiful for a mobile game, making others measure up to its advanced graphics.

While Honkai Star Rail is a free-to-play game, it does include in-game purchases. However, these purchases do not feel necessary to progress through the game, and players can still have a satisfying experience without spending any money. Honkai Star Rail is a fantastic mobile game that is worth checking out for anyone who enjoys visual novels, RPGs, or action games. If you’re not familiar with Honkai Impact 3rd, don’t worry! The game does a good job at introducing you to the world and its characters at an easy pace. However, if you are familiar with the series then it will be nice seeing some familiar faces in this new game. One thing that sets Honkai Star Rail apart from other games like it is how much freedom it gives players when exploring different locations around town. You can approach side quests whenever you want instead of waiting until after completing main story missions like most other RPGs do. With its beautiful visual design, engaging story, and satisfying gameplay mechanics, Honkai Star Rail is sure to provide players with hours of entertainment. Those looking for a head start into the world of Honkai would be best checking for readied HSR accounts with leveled up characters. Whether you’re a fan of the Honkai Impact 3rd universe or a newcomer to miHoYo’s games, Honkai Star Rail is a game that should not be missed.

Review: Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Star Wars is a much-loved franchise. Accordingly, whenever a new book, film, or game is released, its fan base goes ballistic. Therefore, when Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was announced, people were giddy with excitement. Sadly, though, teething problems impacted what should have been a perfect release. Consequently, I waited until the first major patch before I tackled this mammoth title.

Developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by EA, this is a single-player action-adventure title. What’s more, it has a semi-open world to explore, an incredible story to devour, and some of the best visuals and combat moments I’ve experienced. It also has many of your favourite characters from Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. As such, there is an incredible sense of continuity as you continue the battle against the Dark Side.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor looks absolutely incredible.
The world is a beautiful place to explore.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is oddly touching.

The Star Wars games are not renowned for emotive plots or touching stories. Yet, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor delivers this in spades. The wonderful acting, deep lore, and excellent environments combine to create a breathtaking and compelling plot that’ll have you hooked. Furthermore, it’s easy to empathise with the burly hero as his world is turned upside down. Alongside this, you’ll enjoy some of the best parkour and combat elements I’ve experienced. On top of this, there are some excellent custom options and satisfying exploration elements that put its predecessor to shame.

You control Cal Kestis, he is one of the last Jedi Knights to stand up to the Empire. His heart is true, and he is loyal to a fault. Moreover, he carries the guilt of everyone he’s lost. These key character traits are essential tools that are used to portray a genuinely interesting character. His burden weighs heavily on his soul and his dejected mannerisms are telling. However, he is also a proud man that wants nothing more than to find a home. Subsequently, when he learns of a mysterious world called Tanalorr, he dreams of settling down. Yet, he can’t rest until his work is done!

These incredible elements help to drive a plot that’ll hook you from the off. With interesting characters and a cast of weird extras, you’ll adore everyone you come across. Additionally, the juxtaposition between all-out action and sombre and melancholy moments helps to generate drama in the unlikeliest of places.

It’s a standalone affair.

If you’ve never played the Star Wars Jedi franchise, then worry not. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor can be enjoyed as a standalone affair. What’s more, many of the favourite characters from Fallen Order make an appearance and this was fantastic. Additionally, the developers have done a great job of introducing each player without overloading their audience. Consequently, whether you are a veteran or a newbie, you’ll like the amount of information and the pace at which each interaction unfolds.

The game follows a reassuring pattern of exploration, puzzles, quests, and mountains of combat. What’s more, the issues from its predecessor appear to be ironed out. No longer is there a Metroidvania approach. Instead, excellent shortcuts and climbable fauna help you on your way. Alongside this, there are tameable creatures to traverse chasms, waterfalls, and large rocks.

Cal accepts a helping hand.
A helping hand would be appreciated.

Meditation is good for the soul.

A Jedi must remain calm and balanced. Therefore, to restore health, alter perks, and unlock skills, you must meditate at predestined altars. These special areas blend the action and adventure genre with a Souls-like world. Each time you rest at an altar, your foes are reborn. What’s more, if you die, your XP will remain with your corpse. Therefore, if you wish to regain your hard-earned experience points, you must slay whatever creature took your life.

This cruel approach was excellent, as it added a layer of difficulty to the absorbing gameplay. Furthermore, the array of skills and perks alters your playthrough considerably. Accordingly, you can choose to go balls to the wall and smash everything in sight. Alternatively, you can be tentative and methodical as you block each attack.

Each different style is highlighted in which Lightsaber you handle. Will you master the single-blade, or the double-blade, or go for a dual-wield style? Thankfully, you are free to stick with whichever matches your play style or change your approach at any altar.

Excellent level design.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor creates a massive world that begs to be explored. Thanks to familiar platforming mechanics, you’ll leap gaps, climb vines, and wall run like a champion. These exploration elements are enhanced by incredible-level design. With stunning shortcuts, brilliantly incorporated puzzles, and masses of collectables, you’ll search every nook and cranny to find every secret on offer.

Though I adored the vast spaces and occasionally claustrophobic areas, it wasn’t always easy to find the right path. With tiny cracks to crawl through, pipes to climb over, and vines to clamber on, you can become lost far too easily. As such, you’ll use your map more often than you’d like, or rely on hints to get you through.

Cal battles a Lightsaber wielding foe.
You are no match for me!

Amazing combat.

If you loved Fallen Order’s incredible combat mechanics, then you’ll adore what’s on offer. The precise but challenging battles are slick, aggressive, and often OTT. Moreover, you can use new Jedi mind tricks to control your foes or large animals. Once you’ve taken out another wave of Raiders, Stormtroopers, or aliens, you’ll have to face gargantuan creatures or an array of Dark Side tyrants.

The blend of minions and tougher opponents offer a balanced experience that never gets old. Thanks to the 5 difficulty options, newcomers and veterans will be tested equally. As such, you’ll enjoy the excellent storytelling and the wonderful and strange landscapes.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor looks great, but it has some performance issues.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a mind-blowingly beautiful game. The cinematic is phenomenal, the landscapes are varied and interesting, and the character models are brilliantly detailed. Moreover, combat animation is slick and aggressive. However, it isn’t perfect as I noticed frame rate drops and there were glitches and screen tears. Disappointingly, this took the edge off an otherwise polished title.

Visually, there may have been some faults. Yet, the audio was perfect. With incredible acting, amazing sound effects, and a brilliant soundtrack, it sets the scene. Furthermore, the use of upbeat and daunting songs enhances each brutal combat moment. Additionally, the sombre and emotional elements are captured in slow and melancholy tracks. Therefore, it is atmospheric, captivating, and an audiophile’s dream.

Cal discovers some cruel and weird things on his journey.
Shall I release it?

Lots to learn, but easy to play.

The volume of Jedi skills and abilities can be overwhelming. However, thanks to an excellent tutorial, you never feel out of your depth. Alongside this, the responsive controls and excellent layout make this an intuitive and fun title to play.

Though Star Wars Jedi: Survivor isn’t an open-world experience, it is still full of surprises. There are plenty of worlds to explore, loads of secrets to uncover, and a central hub colony to expand. On top of this, you can customise Cal’s outfit, his hair, beard, and every element of his Lightsaber. Consequently, this oozes replay value and longevity thanks to its 30+ hours of gameplay.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor didn’t disappoint.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor didn’t have the smoothest of releases. However, thanks to some hasty work from the developers, it looks and feels amazing. With plenty of Easter Eggs, loads of lore, stylish combat, and an incredible story, it didn’t disappoint. Yes, there were some issues visually, but these rarely tainted my experience. Accordingly, I adored it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you battle your demons and find a new home? Team up with old friends, use the Force and fulfil your destiny.

Avoiding Rage Quitting when You Play

0

Avoiding rage quitting is a skill many gamers have learned to develop. Even the most mild-mannered person can become a raging hulk under the right cues. So, here are some tips.

Learn to Stay Clear of Griefers

There’s nothing more egregious to a video game than the evil spawn known as “griefers.” These swamp-born manifestations of pure arrogance will go out of their way to ruin your game. There are actually millions of gamers who no longer play GTA Online because griefing is so bad on the servers. However, you can steer clear of griefers by hopping lobbies and servers. You can also try looking for Minecraft servers, for example, that are whitelisted and known as friendly servers.

Try to Understand What Sets You Off

Of course, rage quitting is mostly tied to your own emotional responses to something that happens. The best way to understand this is to actively observe what you are doing when something causes you to fly off the handle. Of course, this is challenging. But you can consider recording your sessions for review later on. Take note of how you react to certain things during a play session. Try to identify patterns that cause your sessions to be unpleasant experiences.

Find the Right Team for Avoiding Rage Quitting

Further to teammates, rage quitting is often the result of poor performance from someone else rather than being angry at yourself. Unless you play with a great team all the time, there’s not much you can do about this. But you can try checking out another player’s vitals and stats before deciding to start a game. For instance, you will be better off quitting out of a GTA Online job like Server Farm if the crew has even one player at a low level with very low stats.

Try Not Playing when Stressed

When you angrily quit out of a game, it may not be necessary because you are having a bad experience within it but because you are already agitated. Stress, anxiety, and things in your personal life can cause this. So, if you are feeling bad in any way, it might be best to find something relaxing to do instead of booting up a game. Or you risk making your anger and other issues worse while playing. And you will end up being a poor teammate when playing online.

Upgrade Your Experience for Better Play

How you experience a game goes further than what’s in it. It also covers your surroundings, your setup, and even your internet speed. So upgrade your day to upgrade your play. If you can afford it, get yourself a gaming chair, decent headphones, and a good size display. This will help you feel more comfortable while playing. Also, getting the best internet speed you can afford will definitely reduce lag and improve your experience. And used wired accessories for better input.

Summary

It should be said that avoiding rage quitting is hard. But it never helps and makes existing issues worse. You can stay away from griefers, get calm before playing and upgrade your environment.

Review: Legend of Keepers

More often than not, monsters are viewed as the bad guys! However, have you ever stopped to think that maybe we are the ones in the wrong? For years, we have been told tales of heroes slaying armies of ungodly creatures, but we never think about the impact that causes. Furthermore, we openly applaud thieving knights, assassins, and rogues as they plunder the homes of these underworld monstrosities. As such, maybe it’s time to flip the perspective and see things through the eyes of the monsters. Thankfully, this is what happens in Legend of Keepers: Career of a Dungeon Master.

Developed by Goblinz Studio and published by Klabater, this is a rogue-like experience. What’s more, it reverses the usual dungeon-crawling mechanics as you repel waves of human fighters. Moreover, there are plenty of tactical layers, and an army of monsters to hire and train, and you must consider each of your fighter’s wellbeing. Accordingly, it twists everything we know about the genre, and I loved that idea.

Choosing the right attack is essential.
Pick you attack and defeat those pesky humans.

Legend of Keepers fails to tell a story.

Though it wasn’t required, Legend of Keepers fails to create a narrative or an in-depth plot. Instead, you are left to your own devices as you complete missions for the Dungeons Company. This hellish group demand that every human is thwarted. Moreover, they’ll offer rewards, new monsters, and traps to every successful dungeon manager.

Disappointingly, though, this is the extent of the conversation you have with your Cyclops boss. Once they set you on your way, the conversation is over. Now, this may not seem an issue, but with many missions to undertake, 3 masters to pick from, and an army of monsters to hire, a little depth would have gone a long way.

The gameplay cycle is straightforward. Each of the masters has 9 missions that they must complete. Along the way, they will hire monsters, train them up, and rest them to keep them happy. As the weeks roll on, you will face many tasks as well as contracts to protect each dungeon. If you are successful and your master survives, you will be awarded gold, traps, or monsters, and the game continues. This is the cycle until you complete every mission or you die!

Rogue-like hell.

Legend of Keepers leans heavily on its rogue-like elements to keep things fresh. Subsequently, death is all but assured. However, the minute rewards and minimal gains between playthroughs are somewhat underwhelming. As such, death and failure are hard to swallow. Consequently, this setback can be frustrating, especially if you haven’t unlocked all the masters.

The action opens with Maug the Slaveholder. Once you’ve played for a bit, you’ll unlock the Enchantress and the Engineer to mix things up. Yet, before that happens, you’ll study the fundamentals with the brutish Maug by your side. Each contract follows a set pattern as you follow three phases of action.

The dungeons.

You must study your human foes and understand their strengths and weaknesses. Once you know who you are facing, you’ll place a trio of monsters to take them down. However, success is unlikely, so more tricks must be prepared to ensure success. Accordingly, you’ll use traps, magic, and a second wave of monsters to thwart the humans. However, if this planning fails, the trio of humans will face your master. If your master dies at this stage, the mission is over and the game ends. Consequently, you must prevent this from happening at all costs.

During the fighting elements, you’ll endure cruel turn-based combat. Here, you’ll understand whether you’ve got your tactics right as each set of characters go hell for leather to defeat one another. Whenever it is your turn, you may select from an array of attacks to either damage health or lower morale. As such, victory is achieved by either slaying your foes or making them run away.

Once the battle is over, you are awarded gold, tears or blood, and a selection of monsters or traps. These treasures help to improve your team and increase your roster of monsters. Consequently, they are essential if you wish to complete every mission.

More than just the fighting!

Legend of Keepers is brutal, but there are more layers than first meets the eye. Accordingly, you must manage your team as morale plays a big part. If any monster falls during a battle, their morale will be impacted, and they must be rested in the garrison. Therefore, you must balance your team’s needs against the risks of each fight.

On top of this, you must train each character, purchase new recruits, visit the alchemist to create resources, and much more. Additionally, you can equip artefacts to passively improve your team or hero. Therefore, there are multiple tactical layers to this excellent and unusual reverse dungeon crawler.

Legend of Keepers is a cruel pixelated experience.

The gameplay mechanics may seem convoluted and confusing. However, the graphics are anything but. Thanks to the simple pixelated finish and the fixed-screen approach, you can’t go wrong. Moreover, the combat animation is fantastic, and the decapitations are brutal. As such, I adored this retro-looking title. On top of this, the excellent UI and basic menu system make it easy to play.

The old-school approach continues with the gruff audio. Aggressive tunes, simple sound effects, and minimalistic soundbites dominate proceedings. Accordingly, it will remind you of the SNES and Mega Drive era of gaming.

Improve your chances by unlocking skills in the talent tree.
Improve your chances and unlock some talents.

Gruesome action that is easy to execute.

With so many tactical layers, you’d be understandably concerned about Legend of Keepers’ approach. However, it is remarkably simple to play, as the UI is easy to understand. Furthermore, an excellent tutorial talks you through the fundamentals and that improves things further. On top of this, the fantastic layout and responsive controls ensure that you’ll master this in no time at all.

Rogue-like games ooze replay value and longevity. However, I found this to be tough to stomach. Unfortunately, there is minimal gain between playthroughs, and this stagnates your process. Moreover, until you unlock the additional heroes, it can be repetitive. Yet, once you wade through these issues, you’ll enjoy a strange but interesting dungeon crawler.

Legend of Keepers breaks the mould.

The gaming industry rarely surprises me. However, Legend of Keepers breaks the mould. Thanks to its unusual perspective shift, interesting mechanics, and cruel ways, it is a unique way to tackle the genre. Consequently, if you want to side with the monsters and try something new, then I recommend that you buy it here! Can you protect your treasure and complete your mission? Study your enemies, plan your defences, and keep your gold and your master safe.
