It only feels like a couple of weeks since we saw Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs upset the odds and win the Super Bowl but just over six months have passed since that epic game at State Farm Stadium in Glendale Arizona.
That can mean one thing and one thing only that the start of the NFL season is just around the corner. The action gets back underway on September 7 when the holders of the Vince Lombardi trophy welcome the Detroit Lions to the Arrowhead Stadium.
The start of the NFL season means different things to different people but to many of us football has become synonymous with betting in recent years. If you’ve been bitten by the sports betting bug then this is the article for you. Read on to find out everything you need to know about wagering on the NFL.
Find a Provider
Ever since the decision was taken to strike down PASPA we have seen hundreds of home-grown sportsbooks popping up throughout the country. For punters this makes the process of finding a provider to wager with a much more straightforward prospect.
In years gone by American sports betting fans were forced to wager with overseas companies and accept less than generous odds. The explosion in the amount of domestic options hasn’t seen off overseas sportsbooks, in fact it’s forced them to offer ever more appealing odds to wrestle back their market share.
It’s up to you though to decide which sportsbook you are going to trust with your money and make your wagers with. If you’re not sure, head on over to one of the many great sportsbook comparison sites to find one that’s perfectly suited to your needs and budget.

(Don’t be afraid to look far and wide for a good sportsbook.)
The Odds
The most essential part of sports betting is the odds and unfortunately they are often misunderstood by the majority of casual sports fans. To make the most of your sports betting you need to completely understand odds and how they work.
Here in the United States we do things a little differently to the rest of the world. In the UK bookmakers prefer to use fractions to represent odds, whereas in the rest of Europe and further afield they tend to work on decimals.
Here we use ‘American Odds’ which, once you get to understand, are actually a lot easier to read than other odds systems. Plus and Minus signs are used in American Odds to denote how much you would stand to win from a $100 bet or how much you could lose from a $100 bet.
If a team were back to win at +165 for example, punters would win $165 from their $100 wager. If on the other hand a team were represented with odds of -200, punters would have to wager $200 to win just $100.
The most useful part of American Odds is that you can easily identify the favourite as they will always be given minus odds.

(Betting odds can be very confusing, make sure you’re au fait with them before placing your first wager.)
Betting Tips
Now you know some of the fundamentals let’s finish up with three tips to help you make the most of your first NFL bets:
Multiply the Odds: Betting on the outcome of a single game will soon become boring, especially if you are always backing the favourite. In order to keep things fresh and exciting and to boost your chances of winning big, you should look to diversify your bet.
What does that mean? Simply it means that you add in extra conditions to your bet, so you might still back the same team to win but you add in the condition that they do it by a certain number of points or that they are ahead after a certain time. That will increase the odds adding extra drama to your bet and increasing your potential winnings.
Research, Research, Research: The vast majority of sports fans make wagers based on emotion or impulse and never really take the time to flesh out their bets. If you do even the smallest bit of research you will be increasing your chances of making a successful bet.
That’s not to say that you should spend hours researching plays, but you should at least know the recent form of the team you’re betting on and any injury concerns that they might have.
Leave Your Team Alone: It’s impossible to think about your team rationally. If you’re a Washington Commanders fan you may have the misguided belief that this year could finally be your team’s year. Or if you’re a disgruntled Los Angeles Rams fan you may well have given up to despair altogether and totally write off your team’s chances.
To avoid falling into the pitfalls of silly betting, make it a hard and fast rule to never bet on or against your own team.
