StableBit DrivePool for Windows Home Server 2011 Beta 1.0.2.6309 released

There has been another beta build from CoveCube! StableBit DrivePool development marches on – now its version 1.0.2.6309.

600px-Stablebit_drivepool_screen_thu16

Here is how CoveCube describes this application:

  • Combine all your hard drives into one big storage pool (except the system drive with the OS).
  • Add and remove drives from the pool at any time without re-partitioning or manually moving folders.
  • Create duplicated folders on the storage drive pool that are protected against single drive failure. If a drive fails on which a duplicated file was stored, the contents of that file will remain readable even without the drive.
  • All your data is stored in standard NTFS files. You can always access your files even if the Windows Home Server completely crashes or this add-in can’t be used.

This beta version’s change log:

1.0.2.6309

* [D] Got rid of short file name support.

* After removing a missing disk (not reconnecting it), the pool would still remain in missing disk mode, disallowing write access to duplicated folders until a reboot.

* Physical drive index was not being updated on reboot. Just a UI issue.

* [D] Fixed crash on resource exhaustion in the directory listing code. It will now return the proper error code. This was extremely rare.

WD introduce Dropbox integration to their WD 2go mobile app

WD yesterday introduced powerful new collaboration and file management features, including Dropbox integration, in the next generation of its popular WD 2go mobile app for their personal cloud products, the My Book Live, My Book Live Duo and My Net N900 Central HD router with storage.

WD’s personal cloud products provide shared storage on the home network, letting customers centralise their important documents, photos, videos and music in one place as well as automatically backup all the computers in their home. With the WD 2go app customers can access and share that content from outside the home on their mobile devices.

The new version of WD 2go lets customers move, copy and share content between their mobile device, their Dropbox and their WD personal cloud – combining the benefits of personal and public cloud storage into one, easy-to-use app. For example, if a user has a small number of photos they want to share with their friends, they can copy them from their personal cloud into their Dropbox using the WD 2go app. But if they have a very large number of photos, or files that are too big for their Dropbox, they can use WD 2go to send a secure link to the files via email. WD 2go is available for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch or Android compatible mobile devices.

“WD is committed to providing consumers with secure storage of digital content and access  to it on any screen, on-the-go or at home,” said Jim Welsh, executive vice president for WD’s branded products and consumer electronics groups. “By combining access to Dropbox and personal cloud storage into a single intuitive mobile app, WD is empowering consumers with the flexibility and control of anytime, any-device management of their growing libraries of digital content.”

WD 2go Features

· Dropbox integration: Full access to your Dropbox and use of all WD 2go file management features with your Dropbox.

· Upload: Upload files from your mobile device to your WD personal cloud storage.

· Download: Download files to your smartphone or tablet for offline access.

· Sharing: Share files from your personal cloud storage as email links or attachments.

· File management: Copy, move, rename and delete files on your personal cloud storage and in your Dropbox.

· Third-party apps: Send files to and receive files from third party apps installed on your mobile device using the “open with” function.

· Auto-discover: Automatically discover and connect to WD personal cloud storage devices on the same Wi-Fi™ network as your smartphone or tablet.

Price and Availability

WD 2go (free download) is currently available for download from the iTunes App Store, Google Play and Amazon Appstore for Android.

Installing Windows Server 2012 Essentials in Hyper-V on Windows 8

1

Today, I installed Windows Server 2012 Essentials Beta in Hyper-V on Windows 8 Release Preview.  Read on for details!

win8releasepreview_Page

Today, I downloaded the newly released Windows Server 2012 Essentials Beta onto my Windows 8 Release Preview test machine using Hyper-V.  Here is how I did that.

Install Hyper-V

Hyper V is not installed by default.  I installed it and told you about how to do that here.  Go ahead and install Hyper-V, then open the Hyper-V Manager.

Install Virtual Switch

You need to install a virtual switch so Hyper-V can talk with your network.  In Hyper-V, select Virtual Switch Manager.  You’ll see this screen:

image

Select External.  Click on Create Virtual Switch.  You’ll see this.

Give it a name and if you use VLAN’s then select Enable virtual lan identification at the bottom.  I have not implemented VLAN’s so I left that blank.  Select Apply, click through the warning that your network connection will be reset, and Hyper V has added a virtual switch sharing your physical network connection.

Download ISO File for Windows Server 2012 Essentials Beta

The Windows Server 2012 Essentials Beta can be downloaded here.  Download the ISO file to your Windows 8 machine.

Installing Hyper-V on Windows 8 Release Preview

I recently installed Hyper-V on Windows 8 Release Preview.  Here is how I did it!

windows_8_by_jaycee13-d3hu6ac

Hyper-V is Microsoft’s virtualization solution, and they have now made it available in Windows 8 Release Preview.  It is an excellent solution for testing software such as the Windows Server 2012 Essentials Beta, which I told you about here.  I walk you through installing Hyper-V in this post.

When you install Windows 8 Release Preview, Hyper-V is not installed by default.  We have to manually turn on the feature.  The process is relatively simple, and here is how I did it.

First, bring up the legacy desktop by pressing the Windows key from the Windows 8 home screen.

Next, hover your mouse over the icons at the lower right of your screen, and choose Control Panel from the selections.  Open up Control Panel and click on Programs; you’ll see the following screen shot:

image

Select Turn Windows Features On or Off from under Programs and Features.  You’ll see the following screen:

Click on Hyper-V and make sure that both boxes under Hyper-V are selected.  Click OK.

Currys and PC World’s Christmas 2012 Top Ten Tech Gifts mention Apple mystery product – iPad Mini perhaps?

It’s that time of the year when all the Christmas in July events and announcements take place, and today saw the release of Currys and PC World’s top ten tech gifts list.

PC World Christmas 2012 list

This is the third year running that the Apple iPad has been top of the Christmas bestseller list at Currys and PC World. In fact, such is Apple’s popularity that Currys and PC World are predicting that the only product likely to knock the iPad off the number 1 spot is Apple’s latest launch, a product still to be revealed, but that the tech buyers are predicting will go straight to the top of customers’ wish lists.

The Kindle e-reader is holding strong at number 2 for the second consecutive year, this time with its Touch device. Last year Currys and PC World saw a 700% increase in sales of Kindles during the Christmas shopping period, with a device being sold every three seconds in the week before Christmas.

The iPad isn’t the only tablet to feature in the top ten, however. Currys & PC World predict that the Kindle Fire tablet, due to launch late autumn, will become a Top bestseller by Christmas. Meanwhile, Google is expected to set the tablet market alight with its Nexus 7, coming in at number 3 and set to be one of the hottest gifts this Christmas.

What is very interesting is that at number 4 there is an Apple mystery product with a price to be confirmed. Is this the much rumoured iPad Mini?

Also number 6 shows the Kindle Fire so does this mean Amazon are finally launching it in the UK? They certainly didn’t mention it at all at their annual Christmas Wish List event yesterday.

What are your thoughts on the list?
