Channel 4 and Xbox Partner on “Humans”, Kudos for series for 2015

Today Channel 4 in the UK has announced details of a new sci-fi series titled Humans. The eight-part drama is based on Swedish series Real Humans, and will be produced by Kudos, the team behind Broadchurch, The Hour and The Tunnel.

Xbox Logo Channel 4 Logo

The new 8 X 60 series will share a 2015 premiere broadcast window on both Channel 4 in the UK and the Xbox platform in North America.

Written by British writing partnership Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley (Spooks, Spooks: The Greater Good), Humans is an English language adaptation of Sveriges Television (SVT) and Matador Films’ acclaimed series.

Set in a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a ‘Synth’ – a highly-developed robotic servant that’s so similar to a real human it’s transforming the way we live. When a rushed-off-his-feet suburban father of three buys a refurbished second-hand Synth, he hopes it will relieve some domestic pressure and paper over the cracks of his marriage. But sharing their life with a machine has far-reaching and chilling consequences – for this Synth, the cuckoo in the nest, is harbouring an extraordinary secret.

Channel 4 Head of Drama, Piers Wenger says: “In Humans, Sam and Jon have not only crafted an ingenious and imaginative thriller, but they’re also asking big, thought-provoking questions about how we live.  I’m thrilled to be working once again with the team at Kudos and to be partnering with Xbox to bring this extraordinary and epic series to the screen. This is the first co-production commission to benefit from Channel 4’s increased investment in drama and reaffirms our commitment to ambitious, highly original drama series.”

President of Microsoft’s Xbox Entertainment Studios, Nancy Tellem says: “Humans not only questions personal relationships, but we loved how this sci-fi show toys with reality and our connection to technology.” She adds “This deal with Channel 4 and Kudos underscores Xbox Entertainment Studios’ commitment to programming premium TV series with global partners and creating engaging interactive experiences – and sits alongside other original commissions including a Halo TV series executive produced by Steven Spielberg.”

Filming in the UK will begin in summer 2014, with casting to be announced.

Executive Producer Kudos, Jane Featherstone says: “Exploring themes of love, discrimination and integration, this thrilling, beautifully written series allows us to get under the skin of what it means to be human in the most compelling way. The bold, innovative storylines and subject matter lend themselves perfectly to this pioneering collaboration with Channel 4 and Xbox.”

Final Thoughts

The USB 3.0 to HDMI External Video Card Multi Monitor Adapter is fairly small so it doesn’t take up much room – which is great if you don’t have a lot of room around the TV or monitor you want to connect to. It always makes it portable, so you can slip it into your bag if you want to connect your laptop to a TV in a hotel room, for example (just don’t forget to take an HDMI cable with you).

You can easily mirror the display from the laptop, or if you want, extend the display from the laptop to the TV.

The adaptor works on Windows and Mac, and even Linux, so pretty much all your bases are covered.  drivers……..

To use the adaptor you just connect it up to the computer or laptop, install the drivers and that’s it – very quick and simple.

I connected a laptop up to a TV with HDMI (via USB 3.0) and was very pleased with the results – there was no lag, and everything seemed very smooth. I played a 1080p movie through the laptop and again I was very happy with the results – there was no obvious quality difference and there was no lag. I tried it on a USB 2.0 port and it was noticeably slower, but then it is a USB 3.0 device! One thing to note though – don’t expect to play graphic intensive games through it, it just isn’t that type of device unfortunately.

So if you are looking for a small, portable, easy to use device to connect your laptop to a monitor, TV, or projector then you should take a good look at this one!

The USB 3.0 to HDMI External Video Card Multi Monitor Adapter retails for £59.00.

Review: Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster

0

I decided when I started writing this article that it would be almost impossible not to mention the obvious. And try though I might I was right. I was trying to avoid comparing these to the newer titles and wondering how square can go forward considering a remake is a decisively backwards step. For me at least, Final Fantasy X and X-2 are two of the best RPG’s ever and certainly rank high in Square’s respectable hall of fame.

I push for games to innovate and move a genre on but it’s a difficult move to make. We all like new and exciting things but changes like those that happened after Final Fantasy XII really only need to happen once a genre begins to stagnate. And some might argue that at its core Final Fantasy hadn’t changed all that much since FFVII in 1997, and even before. But given the massive differences between the characters, the worlds they live in and the levelling systems I didn’t think it was stagnant at all. The classic Final Fantasy formula that created some of the most loved games of all time is probably all the more popular now that Square are firmly moving in a different direction – for better of for worse.

screenshot-nov-1

But this ‘remaster’ is another, and probably the last, chance we’ll get to experience FFX and X-2 with reasonably modern graphics on current hardware. So just for a little while lets be ignorant of the fact that XIII, XIII-2 and Lightning Returns ever happened and enjoy some ‘proper’ FF goodness.

It goes without saying that the biggest change to the remasters are the visuals. Both games look impossibly good. Square really have done a spectacular job updating them both to HD. There’s a whole lot less stepping on diagonals and edges and it’s quite clear that this is more than ‘just’ the standard HD remake. That being said some things are beyond repair. NPC’s faces for instance take a bit of a beating from the new HD resolution.

In X in particular you can really see just how bad some textures are. But they’re old games and a few bad textures here and there certainly aren’t the end of the world. But you will notice them. Luckily the main characters and the menus have had loads of attention paid to them so most of the time things look great. The menus in particular have been totally redesigned to accommodate the new pixel count bringing them pretty close to modern games. I really wouldn’t be disappointed if they’d released these games for the first time yesterday – especially given how good the gameplay is.

The sound has also had a revamp to bring it up to date. Final Fantasy’s of old always had great soundtracks which for me, and many others, was one of the greatest components of what made them so great – back in the days of the great Nobuo Uematsu. So it’s great to hear these classic pieces in a more modern audio codec.

screenshot31

The combat and general progression are left untouched from the original international versions of the games. And that’s a good thing. Square have resisted the temptation to ‘just change this’ or ‘make this bit a little easier’ and things remain largely as they where in the original. That’s why we all want to play this remake and Square clearly appreciate that and have left things alone were they should.

Strangely during the final chapter of X-2 I found myself feeling surprisingly emotional. Even given the improved fidelity this obviously wasn’t because of the character’s lack of facial expression or dated voiceovers. Then I realised it’s largely because I care about the characters (yes, even without fancy next-gen effects Square). As Yuna & Co jetted off saying their goodbyes to everyone the parallels between my experience and theirs struck me. I bet there’s very few of you who found it possible to give Lightning and her crew the same respect.

It’s a bittersweet feeling. I can’t help but feel that there’s never going to be a Final Fantasy quite as good as these ones (apart from the obvious). They look good enough that it didn’t concern me and I got more than enough play time out of both. But I found it increasingly difficult to imagine myself playing anything post XII.

And I think square must know that deep down. If you look at the care and effort they put into rejuvenating these classics they must be aware of their importance to fans. It’s great that we all get to enjoy these truly amazing games once again, even better if you never played them, but there’s a constant sense in the back of my head that this is classic Final Fantasy’s swan song.

At no point during my adventures did I long for better textures or even care about the dubious lip syncing. At no point did I miss the ‘more exciting’ combat that largely dismissed tactics. At no point did I miss Leona Lewis or that damn version of the Chocobo music that had lyrics. However I enjoyed levelling up and exploring optional areas. Missing items just because I forgot to talk to someone earlier. The total fantasy of the plot and decent characters. The tactics of proper ATB/turn based combat even without most of the ‘flash’ of post XII titles. You can’t beet a Summon for spectacle! Apart from maybe XII’s quickenings.

screenshot-nov-12

FFX/X-2 is a resounding success that reminded me why I used to love Final Fantasy games so much, breathing new life into something I thought lost to the past. It’s probably the most impressive HD remake I’ve seen too. Although it took Square what seems like forever the results are clear and spectacular if nothing else. I’m not sure if its a good thing or not but I wish Square were doing a XII HD remake next instead of Versus. For better of for worse these are the best Final Fantasy I’ve been on in ages. They certainly stand head and shoulders above anything after XII so far.

I hope Square start to realise that looking forward isn’t the only thing that can be done and start looking at why their greatest works, and possibly the greatest RPGs ever, are now behind them. A new Final Fantasy that considers why X and X-2 can still make a mark and stand up against the competition two full console generations into the future could be nothing but a success. No more excuses Square. If X and X-2 prove anything it’s that there’s still a place for the classic Final Fantasy experience.

Review: The Elder Scrolls Online

0

In theory The Elder Scrolls Online has the potential to take all the greatest parts of the Elder Scroll’s single player experience and basically add a massive world full of people around it. And lets be fair if Bethesda know one thing it’s how to make colossal environments.

Another thing it’s fair to say is Bethesda have a pretty good handle on classes and abilities. So the first thing you’ll be doing is creating your character. There are three allegiances to pick from; the Aldmeri Dominion, the Ebonheart Pact or the Daggerfall Covenant and each has certain races assigned to it (unless you get a pre-purchase bonus which allows you to choose freely). After choosing a name for your character and sifting through the vast amount of customization available you’ll get to choose a class.

28b6ce40d343a3f2ab

There’s four to choose from and I am pleased to say they are refreshingly different from each other. Without spoiling the surprise for those who haven’t looked yet each class has three disciplines which in turn have six usable abilities, one ‘ultimate’ move and four passives. And then if you level a move up enough you can pick a specialisation to add another effect to that move. Then there’s the usual Elder Scrolls single handed, double handed, bow, shield, three types of armour and many, many more. It’s ridiculous. I thought Skyrim had impressive class systems but it’s nothing compared with what’s on offer in Elder Scrolls Online.

And none that I have tried feel even vaguely similar. You really get a sense that each class is unique and has its own strengths and weaknesses. Even though you could potentially learn all of the standard Elder Scrolls abilities with one character each individual will still be different because of their class choice. Oh and did I mention that each race also comes with another set of unique passive abilities. It really is something to behold.

After I spent what felt like a week customizing my character I actually went to play the game and after a brief cutscene found myself in an environment familiar to any Elder Scrolls fan, prison. But have no fear! The prisons in Tamriel, or even on an Oblivion plane as in this case, are surprisingly lax. You’ll travel around, choose a starting weapon and get a feel for how things are going to go in general. Talk to this person, find this item, kill this thing and talk to someone else. It’s methodical and slightly generic but still satisfyingly progressive. Also Michael Gambon lends his voice which is always a good thing – although sometimes it’s difficult not to picture Dumbledore which is annoying. Also, was that John Cleese playing the mental old hermit sat on a bench?

55fc7938d6fc169cb2

Thankfully the prison section doesn’t take too long and your unleashed to go and explore the world at your leisure. Despite the usual MMO nonsense that is inevitable to the starting area things look nice – just look past the monkeys, horses and the odd rogue mage unsuccessfully attempting to set fire to a bush. But I didn’t get that feeling I got when I first stepped out of the vault in Fallout and my eyes adjusted to the harsh light. Or the unrelenting freedom that Skyrim imposed from square one with trees and mountains trailing off as far as the eyes can see, or at least as far as your graphics card can handle anyway.

For an MMO Elder Scrolls online looks great, really great. But had they made an offline experience for PC, PS4 and the X1 it would look vastly superior. It’s the first time I really felt that the fact I was online hindered my experience. And truth be told it’s only really a niggle because I’m sure any RPG fan will agree that some of the best ever haven’t been great lookers. And ironically the main reason I felt slightly underwhelmed is only because of how overwhelming previous Elder Scrolls games have been. Plus given the scale of the world and the amount of people running around without hindering my performance Elder Scrolls certainly doesn’t look bad.

Sadly the questing falls into the standard MMO trap of endless fetch quests but they are intertwined both with Elder Scroll’s lore and ever expanding quest trees. It’s never quite as simple as finding an item and returning it to someone. There’s always another task and another NPC to talk to. It’s what made questing offline in previous Elder Scrolls great and fortunately nothing has changed. The same is true for the dialogue of NPC’s too. It seems that everybody has a recorded line even if they really don’t need to. Combined with the menagerie of real people clambering around, Tamriel has never felt so populated.

But we mustn’t let that population grow too much so we get to the combat. On your travels there are more than enough random enemies spawning to quench your thirst for blood. Combat will be familiar to anyone who’s played Elder Scrolls before. The usual walking backwards as maniacal AI decides whether it should either rush you head on or cast an ability before rushing you head on makes a return. But there are so many abilities at your command that you have quite a few options in combat even if you’re fighting alone. Somehow even though it’s quite repetitive when you really look at it it’s fun, rewarding and addictive. And tricky too. If you get into a fight with more than two enemies at your own level you are likely to be in trouble. One-on-one combat is usually not very taxing but you have to stay on your toes to make sure you don’t get ambushed.

71583963e5ae546fb8

So I must come to a conclusion, which I found difficult. As an MMORPG Elder Scrolls Online is great and by far the best I’ve been on. It has a vast world to explore and every inch is packed with things to do. There are so many abilities and levels to earn that the impressive amount of quests is almost unnecessary. Also NPC’s are entirely voiced and even Michael Gambon makes an appearance as one of the key plot characters. Combat is the usual Elder Scroll’s affair but imbued with all the abilities and skills on offer remains interesting, fresh and highly addictive long into your journey.

The only problem I have is missing out on the things that a new offline Elder Scrolls would offer. But really the only thing that would bring is superior graphics and a world that isn’t broken up into manageable chunks. And less monkeys running about. Considering the advantages of being online I’d say its definitely worth it. As an exercise in blending the best of offline and online Bethesda have succeeded spectacularly.
